Since I was a child, I’ve had a deep interest in my Niipatapiisinaan kii Nitsiipuhwahsin “Blackfoot ways of life and Language” as well as expressing that interest through artwork. I am a graduate of the Cutswood Immersion School or “Niitsipuhwahsin” (2003, 8th grade) Later I graduated from Browning High School. As a Blackfoot teacher, I share my experiences, and my knowledge on these important matters that affect Indigenous people in these education systems. I also address the racism that is deeply embedded in off-reserve education systems that Indigenous educators encounter. I share how non-Indigenous educators working in these education systems can and need to do better so Indigenous students, Indigenous families, Indigenous communities and Indigenous employees will feel welcomed and how school cultures have an important part in ending racism towards Indigenous people in education systems. It is imperative that Indigenous people are at the table making decisions around curriculum, programming, and leadership; this episode unpacks how that looks and what education systems need to do appropriately so Indigenous students thrive and have a positive, healthy experience in education systems. Julia Rose Sutherland is a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores the trauma and social issues associated with her aboriginal roots as a Mi'kmaq woman of the Metepenagiag Nation of Canada. She is addressing the systems of commodification, representation, worth, as well as the identity politics surrounding Indigenous Peoples of North America. With this, she fosters a dialogue regarding the treatment, representation, and voice of these marginalized communities. Often the work emphasizes concepts of loss, absence, alongside adapted Metepenagiag Mi'kmaq Nation traditional materials and techniques. Sutherland desires to regain a sense of identity and push to engage a more mindful conversation around topical subjects such as addiction, mental health, feminism, and aboriginal identity politics. In this conversation, I talk with Julia Rose Sutherland about her art that creates spaces for dialogue that addresses issues affecting Indigenous people, women, and communities. We discuss various works of hers that speak to systemic racism and genocide, and we share stories of resilience, courage and beauty from our Indigenous cultures.
