OTT 134 What is Makerspace and Why Does It Matter in the Classroom? Many teachers are looking for ways to bring more hands-on critical thinking into their classrooms, especially after a lot of screen time in the past year with COVID. I talked all about the 3 crucial reasons to create a makerspace in your classroom post-pandemic on episode 133. Most Makerspaces, which are spaces that kids can investigate, tinker, discover, create, and build. And yes, they can be anything and anywhere. They don't just have to be in a special space in your schools like a media center or a Makerspace room. Often Makerspace is tied to things like STEM, but it doesn't have to be limited to just these subjects. It can exist to deepen the experience with literature, practice soft skills, and even focus on social and emotional learning. (You can catch my session on SEL with Makerspace at the Whole Teacher Eclecticdon. Whole Teacher EclecticCon 2021No matter the objective Makerspace can be a space in your classroom, in a closet, in a tub, on the playground, or even on a cart with the goal that kids can explore creativity through engaging activities. The best part of creating a Makerspace in your own classroom is you can customize your space to cater to the specific needs of your students, their age range, and their interests, or even based on the standards you need to cover.Makerspaces matter in our classrooms because they allow students to hone in on their own unique strengths and interests to practice valuable future-ready workforce skills such as cooperation, collaboration, empathy, determination, perseverance, and more. These are vital skills for the future, and we need to help students practice these skills.Makerspace has been a trend for a while now in education. Makerspace stays relevant today because they have the ability to adapt to changing curriculum and academic needs. No matter what you have to teach, students can be creative, direct their own learning, and make productive mistakes, or experience productive struggle. (To hear more about productive struggle, take a listen to the episode.)Unstructured learning occurs when students are given the reigns to their own learning experience, promoting creativity, innovation, and discovery. Students engage deeply in the activity they design and self-direct and practice their trial and error skills throughout the execution of their learning experience. This type of learning is open-ended, and the end result is unique for every student.Ultimately, unstructured learning leads to the pursuit and strengthening of important skill sets, including critical thinking, creative problem solving, self-motivation, and even SEL skills, such as productive struggle and managing failure.Today's makerspace projects far surpass the shoebox dioramas that we have seen or done ourselves for years. However, it is more about the experience, rather than the product, that truly moves the learning forward. This process over product thinking is about creating, setting goals, working with peers, and problem-solving until success is achieved. Makerspace engages today's students in a way that few traditional classroom experiences allow. For teachers, creating and promoting these spaces ensures that their learners are truly prepared to explore, ask questions, collaborate with others, and ultimately solve the challenges they will meet when they leave these schools. So what do you think? Do your students have a makerspace in their future? To hear more about why every classroom needs a makerspace, come join my free Masterclass- Every Classroom Needs a Makerspace: 5 Fundamentals to Getting Started. “The Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life.” But do we, as Catholics, really understand what the Eucharist is? Let me rephrase that: do we really understand who the Eucharist is? Actually, let me try one more time: Do we fully revere and adore him who meets us in the Eucharist? Maybe we could use some help with all of that. My friend and colleague Tim O’Malley has written a book that will help all of us both to understand the Eucharist better and, especially, to grow in our love of the Eucharist through devotion, prayer, and longing. Tim’s new book is Real Presence: What Does It Mean and Why Does It Matter? The book is part of the new “Engaging Catholicism” series from our McGrath Institute for Church Life through Ave Maria Press, where we explore important but perhaps misunderstood doctrines and devotions of the Catholic faith. In Real Presence, Tim teaches us about the related but distinct doctrines of transubstantiation and of the real presence, but he does more than merely teach us things to know. He shows us how what we come to understand must be joined to how we pray, and how we allow the Lord to transform and illumine our spiritual senses as we meet him in the Eucharist. This is an utterly practical book even as it is an utterly learned book. And today, Tim joins me to talk about the Eucharist, Eucharistic formation, and Eucharistic spirituality.

Do we really believe that the Kingdom of God is breaking in…here and now? Then what are we doing about it? If we want to make an actual difference in our world and the lives of the people around us, we need to get serious! About having real conversations with real people outside of our own boxes and echo-chambers. Conversations…not fights…with people who may not agree with us. People who need to hear the truth. True Truth. God’s Truth. About the way things really are. And why. And what can be done. And how. And that may mean that sometimes we need to correct some misconceptions about who we are…and what we believe…about Jesus…and God…and people…and evil…and sin. And about what the bible really says. And why it’s relevant now! Maybe more than ever before! If we take the time to get the basics right, then a lot of the rest might just start to make sense. We want to help you to have those kinds of conversations. This week’s episode looks at one of those hardcore basic questions. “What Do We Really Believe About Sin and Why Does It Matter?”
In this episode, my husband, business partner, and tech extraordinaire, David, and I are talking about why site speed can hurt your blog and how to fix it. Have you been blogging for a bit, but you aren't seeing the traffic you thought you'd see? Or is your bounce rate super high? If you're dealing with issues like these, perhaps your problem isn't your content; perhaps your site speed is to blame. In this episode We're digging deep into why site speed matters, and how to be sure that yours is where it needs to be. But first, if you're new here, I wanted to take a minute to explain what MiloTree is about and what we offer to our customers, besides this podcast! I like to call this the “MiloTree Umbrella.” First off, if you are a new blogger, or you're thinking about being a blogger but you haven't started yet, we are here to help. If you aren't getting the results you want, come join us and let us help you reach your goals and build a business that will grow with you. Just click through to sign up for your spot in our next session. Now let's get technical, without being too technical... What Is Blog Site Speed and Why Does It Matter? Site speed, simply defined, is how fast your blog pages load when someone comes to your site. Pretty simple, right? The question though, is why should you care? David explains there are 2 reasons why site speed matters. You want to give your visitors a fantastic user experience Site speed plays a role in how friendly Google judges your site to be, and how much traffic they send you It will help lower your bounce rate because people will want to stick around Be Your Own User and Tester If you want to know how quickly your site loads, the best place to start is with your eyes. Be your own user, in other words: go to your site and see how fast your pages download for you. Do you find yourself waiting for the full page to load? David also recommends getting out of your usual space to check your site speed. If you're like us, you're blessed with really fast internet at home. So, when you get on your desktop in your home office, your site might load really quickly. But you need to know how it loads for people on their phones, iPads, and for those with slower internet. So, go to a coffee shop or local hangout, and using only your cell phone data, see how quickly it loads. And obviously, if your pages load slowly when you have optimal internet, you know you've got some work to do. What Exactly Is Slow Site Speed? When you're watching your site load, do you notice that larger things like welcome banners take a bit longer to fill in? Are you having to sit there and wait for them to be done? Next, can you scroll? Or is the page frozen in the loading pattern, with the bottom half not filled in yet? These are the kinds of things that make visitors leave your site before they ever even see what you have to offer. The Two Sides of Site Speed Site speed encompasses several different parts of your actual site. It's not only what the user sees. Site speed begins before the user sees anything. The server side - meaning how long does it take your actual Wordpress (or other host) to load the site itself. The user side - meaning how long it takes for the actual content to load (photos, fonts, text, videos, banners, etc.) How to Have Good Site Speed? Get a Good Host If your site seems slow, or you've had people complain about it taking a long time to load, you can take some definite steps to speed things up. But the best place to start is with your hosting. If you are currently paying less than $3 per month for hosting, you may be at risk for less than desirable site speed. If you'd like to know which hosts David recommends, email me at jillian@milotree.com. Use a Caching Plug-in to Help with Site Speed There are plug-ins to help with almost everything on your site, but be careful, because too many plug-ins can cause your site to be slow. The first plug-in you need for site speed is a great caching plug-in. Caching means your pages are preloaded, in a sense. So, the first person to visit your site gets a full download, but following visitors get a snapshot, of sorts, of the pages. Your site doesn't have to go through all the work of loading everything again; it uses the cache it has built to show the pages. We use and recommend WP Rocket for our site cache. (This is our affiliate link.) Optimize Your Content for Site Speed Your caching plug-in will help on the server-side to bring the site up more quickly, but you've got content that needs to download for the user. So, what can you do to help your photos, videos, and written content, including those awesome fonts you used, to download more quickly? The first step to take here is to compress your images. Images take a long time to download, so you need to reduce the file size. Here again, there are plug-ins that, when installed, automatically optimize your images for you. *We use WP Smush for our photos. This is a free plugin we also use. How to Check Your Blog's Site Speed? If you've checked your site with your own eyeballs, you've used the correct plug-ins to reduce load time and to optimize your images, and it's still slow, there are some things you can do to figure out what's going on. A couple of tools that David recommends are is GTmetrix and Google Page Speed. All that is required to use these tools is to put in your URL and let the tool do its work. It will load your page, analyze it, and tell you what is slowing it down. What Slows Our Sites Down? We talked a little bit about how plugins and photos can slow our site down. But the truth is, every single thing you add to your site slows it down some. Even adding another few words affects your site speed. Now, a few words will have a negligible effect, but another photo could add a second or more to the loading speed. Back in the early days of blogging, before Google was the one setting all the rules, we could add as many photos as we wanted to our posts. And I will admit to being a little too in love with all my photos and not wanting to leave any out. So, you would see recipe posts with upwards of a dozen photos of the finished recipe alone. Nowadays, I aim to only include photos that serve a purpose. The MiloTree Plug-In If you're using the MiloTree pop-up on your site, David and I want to reassure you that when he built our pop-up, he built it with site speed in mind. So while, yes, every single thing you add to your site slows it down some, one thing you don't need to worry about is your MiloTree pop-up. We barely scratched the surface on site speed today, so stay tuned because David will be back to help with additional technical content in the future. If you’re an HR manager or an HR director and you’re responsible for the wellbeing, the resilience, and the energy and performance levels of the people within your organization or business, then this bonus episode is for you! In line with our event, Increasing Employee Engagement and Retention: What Part Does Wellbeing Play and Why Does It Matter on the 3rd of July, Steven Cochrane of Pinsent Masons joins the podcast to talk about the legal implications of not having a retention policy or strategy, and not thinking about wellbeing for your organization. We’ve got a wealth of information to share, so make sure you don’t miss out! Visit https://www.bodyshotperformance.com/podcasts-blog for complete show notes of every podcast episode. Topics Discussed in this Episode: What wellbeing means in a legal What questions you should ask around wellbeing Legislation that’s relevant to employees’ wellbeing The Health and Safety at Work Act The Equality Act The Working Time Regulations Flexible Working The legal implications of a company without a wellbeing strategy The costly errors and oversights made by some organizations The impact of technology on wellbeing Key Takeaways: The law is important, but thinking about wellbeing through a legal prism often leads to a compliance-led approach to wellbeing, which is not very helpful and may even be counterproductive. Rather than asking “What do we need to do?” or “What can we not do?” or “What are the liabilities if we do X, Y, or Z?” the questions should be around “What makes the employees happy?” “What are the stressors in the workplace and how do we mitigate or eradicate them?” There are a number of legal protections in the wellbeing space. From a statutory perspective, there is a whole raft of employment legislation that deals with stress at work and wellbeing, as well as a whole raft of European and domestic safety legislation, and common law obligations and duties of care. These are all highly relevant in terms of thinking about wellbeing from an employee engagement perspective. It’s not always easy to find an approach that works for everybody. While many organizations assume that flexible working, agile working, remote accessing, etc. is a great thing, some employees might find it rather invasive, intrusive, and actually quite stressful. There are those who like to separate work from home, and so technology in terms of remote working and having access to the system and being able to work from home has a negative impact on their wellbeing. Action Steps for HR Managers and HR Directors: Make sure that you have a retention policy or a wellbeing strategy in place. Don’t take the compliance-led approach when dealing with employees. Steven said: “What we see more often are situations where employees are suffering from stress. That’s exacerbated quite often by poor management, lack of support, lack of empathy, quite often by a lack of education and mental health awareness.” “In terms of success stories, employers who have excellent retention and their attrition rates are very positive, that’s the best success story you can have.” Thanks for listening! WHAT ARE SPIRITUAL GIFTS? Abilities given by the Spirit of God by grace through which He works for the common good of the body of Christ, for the glory of God. “A spiritual gift is an ability given by the Holy Spirit to express our faith effectively (in word or deed) for the strengthening of someone else’s faith.” John Piper “For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you—that is that we may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith, both yours and mine.” Romans 1:11-12 WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT SPIRITUAL GIFTS? For believers, each has a spiritual gift or gifts. “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” 1 Peter 4:10 You are far more gifted than you realize, but never gifted enough in your own strength. Each gift is apportioned by God as He wills. “All these (gifts) are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as He wills.” 1 Corinthians 12:11 Each spiritual gift is given by God for the common good of body of Christ and unbelievers. “To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.” 1 Corinthians 12:7 WHY DOES IT MATTER? Because it is worship that God takes pleasure in. “I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.” Romans 12:1 Because in serving with your gift(s), it is a means through which God distributes His grace to others. “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” 1 Peter 4:10 Because it is the means through which God changes the world.

Are you dealing with feelings of disenfranchisement, unfulfillment, and boredom at work? How are you dealing with stress at work on a daily basis? Wellbeing is a real buzzword at the moment, and wellbeing in the workplace is not only an interesting and timely topic to discuss but certainly a topic that deserves our attention. Visit https://www.bodyshotperformance.com/podcasts-blog for complete show notes of every podcast episode Topics Discussed in this Episode: The definition of wellbeing Things that are important for wellbeing The problems facing companies today with regards to wellbeing (absenteeism, presenteeism, leaveism) Exploring solutions to these problems The difficult strains on mental health and physical health that can come from stress and overwork Why wellbeing in the workplace matters Key Takeaways: Wellbeing is really a state of being comfortable, healthy or happy. A part of wellbeing is mental health. The World Health Organization defines mental health as “a state of wellbeing in which every individual realises his or her own potential, can cope with enormous stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.” Wellbeing in the workplace, specifically, includes a job that is challenging, rewarding, fulfills a clear need or purpose and has a support network within it. It is also feeling that you’re a part of something — a team, a common cause, or an overall sense of purpose. A healthy and happy workforce creates a culture that increases employee retention and engagement, and that’s a huge competitive advantage for any company. Companies must have a mutually inclusive duty of care starting from the top of the corporate ladder. Meaning that the employee has a duty of care to ensure that they’re fit for the rigors of business, and the employer has a duty of care to ensure that they are reasonable in their expectations and creating a working environment that does not preclude health or wellbeing. Action Steps for Employers/Companies: Prioritize wellbeing in the working world. Ensure that you have an environment that is set up for an active day. Set policies around email after working hours and policies around working at weekends or during holidays. Leanne said: “It’s toxic to every cell in your body to keep at something you’re essentially fighting against.” “Wellbeing is going to be the way that companies differentiate.” Thanks for listening!
