This week's WordPress news for the week commencing Monday 2nd May 2022.
À quoi spécifiquement trinque-t-on ? WP Rocket – improves page load speed and reduces the load on the automatic caching server. It has long been known that this factor is considered one of the most important in rankings. As you may have heard, Google will be using a scoring system for website quality called "Core Web Vitals" as a ranking factor for organic search results.

If you want to place ads on your WordPress website, check out the Advanced Ads plugin. I have been using this plugin for my paintless dent repair ads and Google Adsense. It's pretty easy to set up but you can spend all day making adjustments at first. I highly recommend you try this plugin if you want to run ads on your website. Welcome back to Casey's SEO for today i want to cover one more plugin. Now there are lots of other plugins that i use for my WordPress website slash directory, but this one is going to be covering ads. So, let's just say, for example, you've been working on your directory for a long time and you want to add some ads because you want to sell some ad space to either other companies or maybe even the companies that are on your directory. So the plugin that i have found the most useful so far is advanced ads. Now i will leave the link in the description, so i am using their pro version. I believe they have a free version that you can use, but either way with this pro version and all their extra add-ons that you can use it's going to cost you around 100 for the year now. You can spend a little bit more and extend that time frame, i believe, up to four years for around 200, but i just wanted to go ahead and give it a try. So some of the things that got me to purchase this plugin was it did geolocation and it was supposed to, and i think it still does, it has a cache buster feature. So basically, what that is is i have cache on my website. I use WP Rocket. I use rocket CDN and then I'm also using cloudflare. Now, with those three, i have been able to speed up my website quite a bit, but if i, if you want to run ads and you want to geolocate those ads, i was running into some issues, and so i wanted to find something that would work to Get away from that and show the ads to the correct visitors in their location with their cash busting system that they have. I was having difficult difficult times setting that up, but the kind of runaround that i was able to do was put the as into a slider and for some reason that seemed to work. But overall it still took me like a day to figure everything out and kind of set it up. I know it's not the correct way to set it up, but it will work if you have something where you want to go into. You know, i guess more detail or be more specific with some geo locations and types of ads that you want to run. You may have some issues, but support will help you at least when i sent them a question. They got back to me fairly quickly, so that is always a good thing, but with this plugin you can have multiple ads, it does say it works on cached sites. You can schedule ads, you can lazy, load, lazy load ads. They work on mobile devices. I believe on some of the mobile devices i was having trouble with some of the ads, so just be aware, and it could have just been the ads that i was putting in there. Maybe i didn't have the correct dimensions it works with google adsense. I have google adsense hooked up on here. Another neat thing with this one and probably most other ad plugins - is it works with a fallback ad? So, for example, if i am geo locating one ad and somebody comes in from a different location, you will have a fallback ad which you can set up as something generic or maybe a google adsense. So you always have an ad showing they also have a selling ad space setup, so this works with woocommerce. Basically, if you want to sell a specific ad space, you can go ahead and set that up with woocommerce and then they can manage that through their account. I briefly set this up. Everything should work with it, but i wanted to get away from woocommerce since I'm using two different payment systems in there. I was using stripe with my geo directory plug-in and i just figured if I'm going to sell ads I'll, just kind of do it on a manual basis and it should be okay. But if you're looking for something to sell lots of ads lots of people, it might be worth using their option to sell ads um. Let me see yeah, you can duplicate ads really quickly. So if you have, for example, on a sidebar, if you have let's just say you want to make one specific group of ads to always show or to geo locate whatever you can go ahead and duplicate those and lay those out and another neat feature which is Pretty common between any ad plugins is you can inject basically as wherever you want, so it could be in a blog post at a you know, a certain time in that post either in the beginning. In the end, in the middle, you know just hit a button and boom it's done, so that is it for today. I just wanted to cover this one more ad, just in case or just one more plugin, just in case you're, looking to add ads to your directory, if you're, making one or, if you're, just listening to this. Because you want to kind of learn how to make a WordPress website, but i will be back very soon with another episode and we'll be discussing some of the other stuff that i have been doing for my website. We're going to be looking at basically how to get more impressions, how to track your impressions might dive into some of the google analytics. Briefly, we're going to be looking at kind of what I'm doing and in a way how to get customers, which is going to be probably a little bit different than what you would traditionally do, especially for a directory. So we're going to be diving into lots of little different things see what works see, what doesn't so kind of excited to see what happens here in the near future, see if i can, you know, get some more clicks, maybe get some customers this and that so Should be interesting, but that is it for today hope you guys enjoyed. If you have any questions, please let me know:
Listen to learn how to speed up your WordPress website. I use these two plugins for my PDR directory website. The first plugin is Wp Rocket. WP Rocket is a cache plugin but it does so much more. The second plugin is Asset CleanUp. With this plugin you can turn on and off certain plugins, CSS, and Javascript to speed up your website. Make sure to check out these two plugins if you are using WordPress. I was able to double my speed score on this PDR Colorado Springs page. Welcome back to Casey's SEO this is episode, four of creating a web directory all right. So first couple episodes. We went over hosting um web design using WordPress the very basics of what you need to get started now we're going to dive into uh some different plugins. So we'll have a couple different episodes of what plugins you should probably be using. Now you don't have to use these exact plugins, but you will want to use something similar to what I'll be discussing. So the first two plugins that we're going to go over today are assist speed up and um WP Rocket. So basically, these two plugins work with cache and work with with uh speeding up your website. So if you've worked with website websites before you will notice, if you have a lot of content or a lot of images or it's just kind of a poor theme, um design, you will notice your speed may be kind of slow. Now. The first thing you need to check if your speed is really slow, is you need to dive into your hosting? If you have the cheapest hosting program or product that you can purchase for the most part, your website is going to be really slow, so make sure to choose a hosting plan. That is not the slowest all right, but we have WP Rocket. So it's going to be a cash um, plug-in it's actually pretty good the product price. I want to say it's about 40 for one website and you can purchase some bundles, which will save you if you need it for more than one website. I also found a website a few years back called woo crack. Now this website has multiple there's tons of different plugins out there, and this one is one of them and you basically get them all for free. Now you don't get any of the support. Um and updates may not be automatic. You may have to kind of check back and to find out when there's an update and manually update that, but that cost me. I think it was five dollars for three or five years, and i mean the price has may may have gone up since then. But can't beat it for the price, but with uh WP Rocket you're, basically going to follow all the instructions you're going to check everything out. Uh you can you can minify your CSS, your HTML, your java script. Sometimes, when you do this, you will have problems with the website. It may change the way it functions or you just may have parts of your website that just won't work correctly, so you're going to have to go ahead and remove that minify to get your work. Your uh website, working correctly again, i mean, let me think, another couple features on there: um they offer a CDN now, what a CDN does it's going to take all your information and store that information on different servers throughout the us or worldwide, and it should serve the person information quicker now their product that they have on there. I believe i'm trying to think what i paid seven dollars, eight dollars a month for it, which is not bad uh. The reason why i chose them is just because it was uh. Basically, a one button set up. All i did was purchase the the plan hit start or whatnot, and it did everything else by itself. You can choose a different program that or a different CDN. That would be better and you can have some more manual work with that with the CDN. I also um hook my website up to cloud-flare, which is basically another CDN, but it does say that it is compatible, so i just hooked both those up with the free version, so it took an additional 10 minutes and good to go with that. Another program that WP Rocket offers is Imagify, something along those lines. You will see it if you check out WP Rocket it is there um image compressed compression uh plug-in, which they have a free version for, like 20 megabytes a month or a couple paid options up to ten dollars for unlimited a month, which is very nice? I went ahead and chose that program. It's probably one of the better image compression plug-ins that i've used, but now we're going to move into um what's. I say asset uh speedup, something like that. I'm going to go ahead and leave all the links below in the description now. This plugin is actually really great, so i basically doubled my mobile speeds that i was getting from my google test. So i, after testing and testing the different um well using different websites for my speed, obviously with google you're going to get the worst um speed, rating or optimization rating, and that's fine. Now, if you use like a gt, mage metrics, you may get a 90 all day long and then, if you go over to your google developers web page and test your speed, you may be at 25 just the way it is but go and look and see What they want you to essentially minify or remove, and you can get your your uh speeds up pretty quick. So, with this asset speed up plug-in that I've used, they have a free version and a pro version, but it basically allows you to go in and turn off, uh plugins and java script and CSS on each individual page. So, let's just say, for example, your home page. Your speed is 25 using uh google speed test and you go through and you're like all right. Well, i don't need um these 10 plugins for my website. You can go ahead and put it in basically test mode, toggle, those on and off and see. If you have any issues with your website, if you don't go ahead and leave them off and then go back through clear the cache and retest your speed now you may go from 25 all the way up to 90 or above it just depends on what plug-ins And things that you turn on and off so this plug-in is this essentially a must-have, especially if your website is slow um, you just got to be careful to what you're. Turning on and off you got to figure out. You know what exactly what every plug-in is. If you don't know a lot of cs and or java script which i don't you might just want to leave some of those assets kind of turned on i mean you like, i said you can go through and toggle them on and off sometimes you'll notice. The difference, sometimes you won't, but you can go, keep going through and play and play with that. The other nice thing about this plugin is, you can set it up for essentially all your pages like, if you just have a page, you can go through them individually or you can say, hey since uh. These five pages are the same. I'M going to go ahead and turn off all these plug-ins and you won't have to worry about it and if you need to go back untoggle one for a particular page, you can do that. It's really easy. Uh you'll probably spend about a day going through and and playing around just make sure you make a saved copy of your website before you start doing all this, and even within the program, if you essentially screw something up uh, you can go through and restore that Plug-In back to the very basics, so essentially nothing is turned on, but uh. Those are the two plugins that I'm going over today. So if you're looking for ways to speed up your website, definitely check out those two plugins and i will be back soon and we'll go over a couple. Other plugins that I'm using for my web directory.

One of the new services that are being developed is to use better cloud services as IT Infrastructure. The big players like AWS, Google Cloud Platform and Microsoft Azure are cloud services that seem to be focused for also bigger size companies, or at least bigger than just a freelancer or a blogger. As a blogger, I wanted to have a place where I can write my content, and also a place where I can monetize my blog. As one keep learning about the importance of website loading times, one understands how important is to have a fast hosting providers. As I have told in the comparison Godaddy vs Siteground vs Kinsta vs Cloudways, choosing the best wordpress hosting has been a long way. There are many reviews that tells you their own ideas, but you are not sure which one will be the best that fits for you. I wanted to try out a cloud WordPress hosting, and I gave a try to Kinsta. They use Google Cloud Platform, but Kinsta was a terrible decision. Specially for a blogger. I have to say, of course Google Cloud Platform was super fast. Plus, my website was optimized. But the extra fees that Kinsta had if you exceeded the number of visitors, was a no for me. Specially because, they take into account bot visits for this number. So I turn back to Siteground while I decided which other WordPress Hosting I should try. Eventually while reading the recommendations in Facebook Groups about Cloudways with Vultr High Frequency, I decided to give it a try. For $13 you can have your high speed WordPress Site and cloud hosting services. So, I changed to Cloudways. (Well, all WordPress Hosting Services are in the cloud, it is just a fancy word now.) I show you how were my GTmetrix numbers with Siteground and now with Cloudways. I can't say it is fully optimized, but the improvement was a faster website. Of course, there is the big difference of having a shared WordPress Hosting to a dedicated WordPress Hosting. The DNS response rate, has been faster now. Plus, I am using WP-Rocket to optimize the Cache, CSS, Javascripts, and HTML. There is still a long way on the Website Optimization. But so far, my decision to choose Vultr High Frequency was the good recommendations that I have heard and read. I had to test it by myself, and yes, it has improved way better than Siteground. The bad side is that you will need an extra add-on if you want to host your email on Cloudways. For now I use Siteground to host my emails. Installing WordPress on Cloudways is really easy. You can read my Cloudways Review to learn more about it, which in there it has a better step by step of how to install WordPress on Cloudways with Vultr High Frequency. It’s the third in our series of chats called the A-Z of WordPress, where we attempt to cover all the major aspects to building and maintaining sites with WordPress. Today, it’s the letter 'C' for Caching (including server side caching, front end caching (plugins) and CDNs. However, we avoid getting too deeply into page load times and scores, which we cover separately on another podcast. So what is the point of caching? What does it do and how might we do it with our WordPress websites. It's certainly a complex subject, and we don't have all the answers, but we do surface some good plugins that you might not have heard of. Check out the podcast...

Just click through to sign up for your spot in our next session. Now let's get technical, without being too technical... What Is Blog Site Speed and Why Does It Matter? Site speed, simply defined, is how fast your blog pages load when someone comes to your site. Pretty simple, right? The question though, is why should you care? David explains there are 2 reasons why site speed matters. You want to give your visitors a fantastic user experience Site speed plays a role in how friendly Google judges your site to be, and how much traffic they send you It will help lower your bounce rate because people will want to stick around Be Your Own User and Tester If you want to know how quickly your site loads, the best place to start is with your eyes. Be your own user, in other words: go to your site and see how fast your pages download for you. Do you find yourself waiting for the full page to load? David also recommends getting out of your usual space to check your site speed. If you're like us, you're blessed with really fast internet at home. So, when you get on your desktop in your home office, your site might load really quickly. But you need to know how it loads for people on their phones, iPads, and for those with slower internet. So, go to a coffee shop or local hangout, and using only your cell phone data, see how quickly it loads. And obviously, if your pages load slowly when you have optimal internet, you know you've got some work to do. What Exactly Is Slow Site Speed? When you're watching your site load, do you notice that larger things like welcome banners take a bit longer to fill in? Are you having to sit there and wait for them to be done? Next, can you scroll? Or is the page frozen in the loading pattern, with the bottom half not filled in yet? These are the kinds of things that make visitors leave your site before they ever even see what you have to offer. The Two Sides of Site Speed Site speed encompasses several different parts of your actual site. It's not only what the user sees. Site speed begins before the user sees anything. The server side - meaning how long does it take your actual Wordpress (or other host) to load the site itself. The user side - meaning how long it takes for the actual content to load (photos, fonts, text, videos, banners, etc.) How to Have Good Site Speed? Get a Good Host If your site seems slow, or you've had people complain about it taking a long time to load, you can take some definite steps to speed things up. But the best place to start is with your hosting. If you are currently paying less than $3 per month for hosting, you may be at risk for less than desirable site speed. If you'd like to know which hosts David recommends, email me at jillian@milotree.com. Use a Caching Plug-in to Help with Site Speed There are plug-ins to help with almost everything on your site, but be careful, because too many plug-ins can cause your site to be slow. The first plug-in you need for site speed is a great caching plug-in. Caching means your pages are preloaded, in a sense. So, the first person to visit your site gets a full download, but following visitors get a snapshot, of sorts, of the pages. Your site doesn't have to go through all the work of loading everything again; it uses the cache it has built to show the pages. We use and recommend WP Rocket for our site cache. (This is our affiliate link.) Optimize Your Content for Site Speed Your caching plug-in will help on the server-side to bring the site up more quickly, but you've got content that needs to download for the user. So, what can you do to help your photos, videos, and written content, including those awesome fonts you used, to download more quickly? The first step to take here is to compress your images. Images take a long time to download, so you need to reduce the file size. Here again, there are plug-ins that, when installed, automatically optimize your images for you. *We use WP Smush for our photos. This is a free plugin we also use. How to Check Your Blog's Site Speed? If you've checked your site with your own eyeballs, you've used the correct plug-ins to reduce load time and to optimize your images, and it's still slow, there are some things you can do to figure out what's going on. A couple of tools that David recommends are is GTmetrix and Google Page Speed. All that is required to use these tools is to put in your URL and let the tool do its work. It will load your page, analyze it, and tell you what is slowing it down. What Slows Our Sites Down? We talked a little bit about how plugins and photos can slow our site down. But the truth is, every single thing you add to your site slows it down some. Even adding another few words affects your site speed. Now, a few words will have a negligible effect, but another photo could add a second or more to the loading speed. Back in the early days of blogging, before Google was the one setting all the rules, we could add as many photos as we wanted to our posts. And I will admit to being a little too in love with all my photos and not wanting to leave any out. So, you would see recipe posts with upwards of a dozen photos of the finished recipe alone. Nowadays, I aim to only include photos that serve a purpose. The MiloTree Plug-In If you're using the MiloTree pop-up on your site, David and I want to reassure you that when he built our pop-up, he built it with site speed in mind. So while, yes, every single thing you add to your site slows it down some, one thing you don't need to worry about is your MiloTree pop-up. We barely scratched the surface on site speed today, so stay tuned because David will be back to help with additional technical content in the future. Learnings and Leanings I decided to do a special edition episode for a few reasons. First, I've been thinking for a while that I'd like to share what I have learned, which feels like a lot: what I've learned from doing this podcast; what I've learned from my guests; what I think and how I feel about all of it. Second, I want to tell you about some changes that are coming. I'll explain more in a bit, but basically the podcast continues to evolve and these changes will reflect that. Thirdly, I want to talk about some of the services I use that I find beneficial for my food blog, Dishes Delish, and think would be helpful for other bloggers. None of my recommendations are sponsored. Snafu and the Lesson Learned The catalyst for this special edition episode was a problem I encountered last Tuesday, March 5th, when I uploaded Elizabeth Falcigno's interview. It was supposed to be published today, March 13th, but actually came out the day I uploaded it. I had scheduled the episode for the correct date and time, but there was a glitch that overrode my settings and Libsyn published it immediately. I noticed what had happened within a few minutes but even though I quickly tried to reschedule it, iTunes had already pulled the feed and people had already started to listen to the episode. To get downloads so quickly was amazing to me, but still, it wasn't what I'd planned. Since this snafu left a hole in my publishing calendar, once I calmed down, I realized it was my chance to record and publish this update instead of an interview. So here we are. One of the things I learned from this snafu is not to freak out about problems that come up, especially if you can't fix them. And believe me, I tried. Was I upset? Yes. Did hubby have to talk me off the figurative "ledge"? You betcha! But basically, what I realized is the only thing that really upset the order of my world was that Elizabeth's episode came out the day before Chris Collins'. Did that hurt anything? No. It just changed something. I feel grateful and protective towards my guests. I want each person to get their time in the spotlight and I was worried that Chris would lose the spotlight because of Elizabeth's episode. Well, that didn't happen. Both episodes have gotten great download numbers even though they came out on consecutive days. So, instead of pulling out my hair and wailing at the technology, I accepted it and I'm happy for the lesson I learned. Letting Stuff Go - Like Plugins Mostly, I have a love/hate relationship with change. I love it in some ways and hate it in other ways. Hubby and I used to change our furniture around a lot because both of us or one of us - usually me - needed the change. The weird thing is I would more often than not feel kind of lost after we plunked the last piece of furniture down. Because of the change. Not that we undid anything, but it used to make me cry a little. The reason I tell you this is because it sort of explains why I hung on as long as I did to using the social sharing plugin called Social Warfare after I learned it was a problem. I'd read comments on Facebook. A lot of people complained the plugin broke their site once they updated it. BROKE THEIR SITE! Can you imagine? The way I dealt with it, was to not update it, which we all know is not a good practice. When I interviewed Andrew Wilder and he raved about Social Pug, the social sharing plugin developed by Mihai Iova from devpups.com, it still took me a few months to decide to actually switch. Even though Andrew mentioned that Social Pug did exactly what Social Warfare did, I still clung to what was 'known'. Well, today I'm really glad I jumped on the Social Pug bandwagon. Not only does it do everything the old plugin did, but when I had some questions and reached out to Mihai to ask them, not only has he responded quickly but he answered my questions and really cared that I understood his answers. So, if you are like me and want to cling to what you know, I'm here to tell you that I don't regret for one moment making the switch to Social Pug! Change might be challenging, but that doesn't mean it's not good. Now, I'm eyeing Mihai's Optin Hound plugin, since I really need to change my current one, which I'm not going to renew. Services I Rely On I've mentioned before on the show the support I get from my virtual assistants, Helena and Vladi. Together they manage different aspects of the website, social sharing, and SEO for me. I've often said that one of the best things I have done for the blog was to get a site audit by Casey Markee, (you can hear his episodes here and here). But the other best thing I have done was to hire Lil Creative Digital Agency, which is Helena and Vladi's company. I've been working with them for almost 2 years and am here to say that their help has done so much for our business. Not only are they efficient and communicative, but they go the extra mile and are always positive. They answer my questions readily and take time out of their lives to send me feedback or brainstorm ideas with me. I consider them my friends. I will be interviewing Helena and Vladi in the coming months, which I'm really looking forward to. Stay tuned for their episode. One of the services I was most excited to hand off to them was the maintenance of the Dishes Delish website. Even though I'm technology savvy, it's hard to keep up with all the changes and frankly, I don't have the time or desire to do it anymore. So, I subscribe to their maintenance package and couldn't be happier. No more staring at the settings for WP Rocket (or some other plug-in) and guessing if I got them set up correctly. I can rest assured that they will get it done and I don't have to worry! As Toni Dash advises, hire someone who has the expertise you don't so you can focus on creating the content only you can create. Changes to the Podcast Okay, here's what I'm planning for the Dishing with Delishes podcast. Don't worry, I'm still going to be producing episodes for the show. Since the podcast is still growing, I'm not actively looking for ways to make money on the show, so my main source of revenue comes from my food blog, Dishes Delish. I'm imagining that as the show grows, I will do some sponsored ads that I'll insert into each episode, but I keep putting it off because I want my listeners to have a great listening experience and being clobbered over the head with an ad takes people out of the experience. When/if I do sponsored ads, I will only promote companies that I think will be beneficial to you, my audience. Just so everyone understands where I'm coming from, each episode takes me a long time to produce. First comes the pre-interview communications. It takes time to reach out to people, ask if they want to be on the show, respond to their questions and then send them next steps, if they do. So, let's say I spend two hours a week doing that. Next, comes the actual interview, which runs anywhere between 35 minutes to an hour. Then, comes the editing, because I'm not sure everyone knows that I edit every single episode. A 30 minute episode takes me, on average, anywhere between 2 1/2 hours and 4 hours to edit. Why does it take me so long? Because I'm a perfectionist. I take out as many "umms", false starts, pauses, and other types of language that I feel detract from the listening experience as I can. When we are in front of someone and speaking, we hardly notice the "umms', the starting of a sentence and then stopping mid-way to say something else. We just accept it as normal. But when you have headphones on and you're listening to the show, they are glaringly obvious. At least to me. They've got to go! Next up is the show notes page. Thankfully, Christopher (hubby) takes some of the writing out of my hands, like editing and inserting the bio we receive from guests. But I compile and add everything else on that page and that takes me around a 1/2 hour per episode. Uploading and configuring each episode for my media host, Libsyn, takes me between 15 minutes and 1/2 hour. After the episode goes live, I write to the guest, providing them links to share their episode with their social media networks (for which I'm eternally grateful, when they do). The last thing I have to do is share the episode to all of my own social media networks. Do you see how much work that is? Don't get me wrong, I'm happy to do it. I love talking to my guests and hearing their stories. I love learning from them about their journeys and their businesses and want to continue producing this podcast for many years. But in order to do that, I've decided I have to limit how many episodes I produce. So instead of 52 episodes a year, I will be producing the podcast in seasons - think television seasons. I will have two seasons a year - 20 episodes per season. The first season will start in early January and run to mid May. And the second season will start early July and end before Thanksgiving. I feel very positive about this change. I think it will give me the time I need to focus on the money making activities for my blog while still reaping the benefits of producing the podcast. What I've learned One of the things I've learned after talking with over 70 food bloggers and experts is that we all have different approaches and journeys. Some of us started blogging so family members and friends could access our recipes without us having to provide them over and over via email. Some of us started because we love food and have a deep desire to share it. Some of us started because we learned how easy, fun or beneficial cooking is and wanted to inspire and help others to learn, too. And some of us started blogging as a business opportunity. One of the things I really enjoyed was when Kate Kordsmeier stated loud and clear that she started her blog as a business. It was refreshing to hear that because that's why I started mine. I felt funny saying that to people because it felt shameful on some level. But after hearing Kate say it and knowing other guests did it, now I say it proudly. Another thing I've learned is no matter if you have an expensive full framed camera, a starter DSLR or a smartphone, the more you take photos, the better your photography will be. Like the old saying, practice makes perfect. So keep plugging away and if you get discouraged, go back to your old photos to see how far you've come. Another thing I've learned is to celebrate every win you've accomplished. This is something Christopher and I both try to do whenever possible. Too often we don't take the time to celebrate and that makes us lose an opportunity, because we all know that blogging is hard work. Like, really hard. Why not look at what you've accomplished and celebrate it? The work will always be there. We put in long hours. Unless we are super lucky, it can take years to see results. So I say, stick with it and don't quit, but in the meantime work to improve your writing, your photography or anything else related to your business. It will pay off in the end and bring you satisfaction along the way. That's what I think. What do you think? If you've been listening to the show for a while and/or have a blog of your own, I would love to hear what you've learned, either from Dishing with Delishes guests or from your own journey, in a comment on this page. It doesn't have to be long or include a narrative. Short and sweet is fine. You can also shoot me an email if that's easier. Send it to Elaine at Dishing With Delishes dot com. Also, if I'm not covering the questions you want to hear me asks my guests, please either use the comment section below or email to tell me so. That is all. :) Thank you for listening to my podcast. I appreciate each and every one of you!

When I started scheduling and blocking my time in this new way, I felt more in control. When I was able to work on the projects that I love, like the 5 Day Website Challenge and Pep Talks for Side Hustlers and marketing, it all feels right and worth it. And that it’s very important that I write these income reports and review them sooner than three months behind. Because they help me get so much perspective and even some clarity about what to do next. Remember how I almost spiralled out of control in April from taking on too much client work? Well, I was still hungover from that in May and it really clouded my decision-making. I had a few Done For You proposals still out there that I decided to put some intentional effort to follow up on these projects and book them… “but if I do this,” I thought, “I’m going to need to bring on a project manager to manage them.” And I was really torn, because I know bringing someone on is going eat into my profit and I NEED to put a paycheck into the bank every two weeks… But I’m also trying to put my time into raising my passive income, and part of that could be hiring a team to run the Done For You projects, raising prices and me just selling them and coaching a team through the actual work. I don’t have to be the one doing all the things, I just need to slow down enough and make space to hand things over to people who are better suited to do them than I am – and on a per project basis rather than a monthly contract until I have a consistent, stable income. I can’t (and shouldn’t) do every single thing in my business. That’s how I end up making $15.62 an hour. Because honestly, I feel like if I give up on client work, I gotta shut down the Web Designer Academy too. Right? And am I ready to do that? No, I love mentoring other web designers that are just getting started. I would NEVER coach them to build the situation I had created for myself. But for some reason I was just not taking my own advice!!! So I posted a position to my Web Designer Academy students, and three amazing candidates applied!! “Okay, so now what? How do I choose?” I thought. Oh, and I had no guaranteed work to give to them because these proposals – where I had gotten a verbal yes that prompted me to even post this job description – hadn’t yet signed a contract or paid a deposit – which means they’re not actual jobs on my schedule. So I asked each candidate if they would be willing to do a trial project and I told them that it wouldn’t be until I booked a new project. Guess what? I didn’t book a single new project in May. And I’m not at all surprised. The energy I was putting out closed off any possibility of that happening. In fact, I was relieved. Relief wins out over everything. But I felt bad about getting three awesome people all excited to work with me and then womp womp, nevermind! I don’t have any projects for you after all!! Running a business is HARD when there are other people besides me involved! So I put my head down into redoing the 5 Day Website Challenge and adjusting the marketing, the sales funnel and the pricing strategy. I took a deep dive into Nathalie Lussier’s AccessAlly and implemented all kinds of new features that weren’t there when I first started using it three years ago. It was a total blast, and things started to feel right again. But I knew deep down, I was still going to have to make some cuts, that my expenses were still way too high especially with no new Done For You Clients coming in to cover them. And when you look at my income reports, you can see that there’s one clear place to make a few cuts that have a big impact. Independent contractors. The people I pay to help me with day-to-day stuff and DFY projects. Ugh, these are real people whose contracts I need to cancel. It’s not like just cancelling a subscription, it’s like telling someone “Hey, remember I used to pay you X? Well, you can’t count on that anymore… Hope you can still pay your bills!!” And I know it’s my own hangups around money that make me feel terrible, that make me dread having those conversations, because I feel like I’m putting that person in a bad spot. And because I’m afraid of not having enough money and I’m projecting it onto other people. But it’s not personal, it’s business. But it is personal, to me. I’m sensitive. I care about stuff like that. But I also have to put myself and the health of my business first. So I cancelled my Pinterest management contract and took that on myself with the goal of learning exactly what I was outsourcing. I honestly feel like I made a mistake jumping into that one so quickly, but that’s a blog post for another time. And again, I felt relieved. Some of the financial pressure was lifted. I had two more contracts to cancel… But those, I still had to muster up the courage and it took me until June to do it. All in all, I’m proud of myself. I have consistently shown that I know how to make money. When I quit my day job because I had maxed out my ability to grow my side hustle, I thought “If I just had more time I’d be able to generate $10K a month.” And I was right. But it didn’t turn out the way that I thought it would. It’s not all smooth sailing. And the reasons why I love writing these income reports is because most of the time, this feels hard. Like, when I’m in the thick of it. But then when I reflect back on the month, I think: “Wow, Shannon. Look what you were able to accomplish in 30 days. And you’re pushing through the hard stuff and you’re not giving up. And here’s a little perspective for you: And in the past four years, you haven’t gone into debt, you haven’t dipped into personal savings, you’ve been profitable from day 1, and you haven’t missed a paycheck. You are so powerful. You are going to eventually get this working the way you want it to work so that it FEELS the way you want it to feel and you’re not worried about money all the time. I wouldn’t change a thing about this journey. Not one thing.

Yoast SEO ; 3. SecuPress ; 4. Real Favicon Generator : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAGHgj_lv10 5. Gravity Forms ou Formidable Forms ; 6. Pretty Links ; 7. Redirection ; 8. Social Warfare : https://wpmarmite.com/boutons-partage/ 9. Subscribe to Comments Reloaded ; 10. Akismet (déjà installé sur WordPress) ; 11. Growmap Anti Spambot Plugin ; 12. WP Rocket ; 13. Imagify ; 14. WP PageNavi ; 15. OptinMonster.
Si tu cherches à optimiser ton site, tu as dû entendre parler des CDN.

Welcome to Episode 8 of Mastermind.fm! This week James and Jean begin tackling different business models in WordPress. Right out of the gates, our resident masterminds are quick to point out an important distinction in the way we think about WordPress product models in general: the difference between a development model and a business model. Let’s unpack that a little bit before we jump into the heart of the conversation. The development model refers to the concept of a core product with core functionality in which addons are developed to extend the functionality of the base product in a modular fashion. This model offers a core product that is lean and extensible, allows users to choose the functionality they need, and is easier to troubleshoot and support by isolating specific aspects of the product. A perfect example of this concept in action is the modular AffiliateWP by Pippin Williamson. On the flipside are plugins like Jetpack: a behemoth plugin that attempts to do all the things. Conceptual distinction aside, we turn to the focus of this (and next) week’s podcast: WordPress business models. There are a few different strategies that fall under this umbrella that we’ll speak on: Free Premium Freemium It’s going to take a couple episodes to unpack all three. This week we’ll speak to the Free and Premium models, and next week we’ll open the Freemium can o’ worms. Free as a business model can result from a few different approaches. You can be offering your plugin purely as a labor of love for the community, as a catalyst or channel into a paid service, or as a means of brand or reputation building within the community. Yoast SEO by Joost de Valk is a perfect example of the latter two approaches. The Yoast SEO plugin is, of course, completely free in the WordPress repo. This free offering, however, has set Mr. de Valk up over the years as an expert in his field and has given his company inroads to the inner circles of millions of different websites. The Premium business model by contrast relies only on the proceeds of a paid product(s). Buyer beware: the word premium itself can be misleading; it implies quality but a consumer should not assume quality purely based on price tag. There are different ways for the Premium strategy to be approached. It can be a tiered model in which the customer pays based on the number of installs they need. It could also be presented as a tiered system in which the user pays for the features they need in the form of addons. It can also simply be a straightforward all in one product. How this model can thrive in the absence of a common marketplace like the WordPress repo wraps up the talk, and James and Jean look to successful ventures like WP Rocket and Surge WP, and alternate marketplaces like ThemeForest and Codecanyon.
