Always FreyDay is a weekly reflection on Small & Medium-Sized Business (SMB) in the USA, through the eyes of organizational leaders and their trusted advisors. Each week, we focus on a particular idea, problem, or popular topic of discussion, on the minds of organizational leaders in 2020 and beyond. We explore the people, processes, and products that give the appropriate context (and geek translation) to the theme of the day. Our impactful conversations will be facilitated by Steven Frey, who will be joined by business owners, management staff, trusted advisors, industry subject matter experts, and other special guests. It is important to note that while financial, tax, and insurance related topics may be discussed on the show, the content should not be taken as direct financial, tax, or insurance advice. Any direct advice and action taken on the part of listeners should be done in partnership with their respective, licensed, professional trusted advisors. Come spend some time with us right before lunch, at 11:00am each FreyDay, for an insightful ending to the business work week, in preparation for a more impactful Monday.

Introducing his special guest, Cathy Miron, CEO of cybersecurity firm eSilo, who talks about her path to entrepreneurial success. Early in her career, Cathy flew around the world doing audits and assessments on GE business units in various fields (healthcare, banking, energy, etc.), she never really thought she would become an entrepreneur. Then, the skills she learned were broadly intuitive about learning how to be an effective student of the world and think critically. Cathy loved using technology to solve business problems. She wanted to be more on the business-facing side of the work, working directly with the teams she was contracted to support. Eventually, she knew that if she continued the track she was on, with her ethic, she would soon be tapped for her boss' position, one she wasn't so keen on. Despite her pacing and accolade, it was no longer fulfilling her desire to make an impact or be happy. Instead, the workable opportunity to start a family, move to South Florida, and purchase a business came in the midst of her indecision. Now, Cathy employs her Fortune 10 business scope in the open marketplace, exposing her audience to maybe a different corporate mentality than they have been used to.There is such a thing as a business MLS (Multiple Listing Service) that is a list of private businesses in your area that are up for sale (similar to the real estate market). If you have a nest egg or savings and have been looking to invest or purchase, it is a good place to gather information about location, marketability, and logistics. Not starting from scratch and instead refining other's work is where she felt her calling lay.Segment 2It's not just about the tools you're using, have a PEOPLE-first mindset; it's about the people advising you to engineer the best responses that create resilience for your business.Multiple factors make SMB targets for cyber crime: limited employee awareness, failed training on best practices for cybersecurity, lack of expertise of cybertools, heavily outsourced IT groups, and inability to survive prolonged stretches outside of key systems. 70% of [ransomware] attacks from (2018 data) targeted SMB, the odds of an SMB being attacked in a fiscal year are ⅓. Cost of insurance: your business might have commercial general liability insurance thinking that would help mitigate the costs relating to a breach or attack but contracts may include an electronic data EXCLUSION clause– meaning insurance will not cover costs regardless of how data was lost, damaged, or corrupted. If this is a concern, you might purchase 3rd party cyber-liability insurance to supplement. Cathy's company helps business leaders protect their data with simple easy-to-understand concepts, automated tools, and with a foundational focus on their people-processes and devices. Training your business how to do it, and then providing the tools and infrastructure to support it is the way to build a robust security system. Offered are offsite backups, cybersecurity training and awareness, audits and consulting. Often working with IT consultants, the jack-of-all-trades umbrella groups that mediate for their clients, are often stretched thin so often Cathy's company is called in to partner behind them and manage the security aspects of the services provided or simply receive client referrals.Segment 3The most targeted information for ransomware is Healthcare information. On the black market, a stolen social security number is worth about $1 per number, a bank account ~$50, but a health record could be upwards of ~$1000! Misused information is linked to identity theft for insurance fraud purposes. The value of a social media profile is also more than a bank account. Design your cybersecurity program with resiliency in mind. Business leaders ought to have the paranoia, or at least the ability, to think like a bad guy, “how do i prioritize the things that are most likely to go wrong with/in my business, and where do i align my budgets/limited resources to address those probabilities?” It is not necessarily about perfection but progress and resiliency. They say there are only two categories of businesses, the ones who have been hacked and the ones who have been hacked and don't know it yet. The choice becomes: at what point do I continue doing what I have been doing or allow the risk to my business, or do I make the decisions that will People often don't know where to start or think it is too expensive–cybersec. is usually more affordable than assumed. Cathy finds that reminding a business of the mundane ways they might lose their data (outdated servers, disgruntled employees, poor maintenance, etc.) that usually gets them over the hump into action.

The audience will hear from a former Adjudications Officer at the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) headquarters in Washington, DC.  Attorney Williams can offer added insight into the workings of the agency, and now advocates on behalf of immigrants looking to work and live in the U.S.A.SMBs have had no shortage of challenges over the last couple of years, not the least of which is attracting and retaining talent.  The labor shortage and the great resignation are buzz words that everyone has heard as of late, but what about the available talent that is currently based overseas? In 2021, the administration made a number of changes to the U.S. employment-based immigration system that employers may not have on their radar.  Some of those changes are a good step moving forward, but some may present challenges in the human resources space, particularly for SMBs.  Whether you are a U.S. based employer in search of talent based outside of the country, or you are a prospective employee looking to work and setup residence in the U.S., it behooves you to have the right counsel in your corner. We are joined by Carol Williams, Principal & Attorney at Williams Immigration.  Carol helps companies hire and retain employees who are non-citizens.  She has worked extensively with companies of all sizes, from start-ups to multinational companies, as well as individuals trying to live and work in the U.S.A. with their families. For 20 years her legal practice has concentrated exclusively on matters of immigration and nationality. Website:  https://clwimmigration.com/LinkedIn:  https://www.linkedin.com/in/carolwilliamsesq/Twitter:  https://twitter.com/usavisaguruEmail:  info@clwimmigration.com Tune in for this sensible conversation at TalkRadio.nyc or watch the Facebook Livestream by Clicking Here.Segment 1Steven starts talking about the topic of this Friday which is a crucial problem. He mentions that this week we have celebrated President Day: Freedoms and opportunities started on this first day. This week the topic that Steven will talk about is related to Citizenship and Immigration Services. He mentions the importance of attracting talents overseas and like he says maybe someone is not in the radar of the new changes. That's why whether you are a U.S. based employer or you are a prospective employee looking to work and set up residence in the U.S you need the right counsel. To help you in this process, Steven suggests you look for appropriate information. He introduces his special guest Carol Williams, Principal & Attorney at Williams Immigration. Carol delivers solutions to problems that might arrive to immigrant people. Carol helps companies hire and retain employees who are non-citizens and  She has worked with companies of all sizes. In addition, she can also help you to get green cards, passports, etc to live in the U.S.  Steven introduces Carol and he says that she has the best perspective on this matter. She starts  talking about her deep experience, starting with criminal law but at the end she realized that she didn't like it at all. That's why she decided to go to Mexico and study a random ‘subject' called Inmigration. Like she says the universe gave her the opportunity to study Inmigration. In that period, she met lots of people and she understood their different problems related to this matter. Steven asks her if this experience was better staying in Mexico instead of coming back to the U.S. She answers that she doubts about it because of the difficulty of the language (Spanish). Steven says to her that she can tell us about how she can work with different people all over the country. She says that the most important thing related to Inmigration is the Congress and the President.  Segment 2 After the break, Steven keeps the message that Carol can help and work with different people all over the U.S. Quick perspective by him is that not being an American citizen is very stressed since the pandemic. Steven mentions that you need to know the entire situation to be a legal citizen in the U.S. He states that Carol knows the governmental and federal laws in case it is needed. Steven asks her what she does these days. She answers ‘what's your goal like?, what are you trying to achieve?'. Because there are many different goals and sometimes people can recognize them so that's why Carol helps people to identify them. She keeps saying that she works together with the client as partners. She mentions that it is important to work together since sometimes cases are long term goals. As Carols says, when you are a prospective employee looking to work in the US and want to reside in the country, it is not so easy. Maybe you don't get the goal at first so you need to keep working on that until getting a green card or visa for instance. Her method is to stay with what they need, even if they are not ready and they have to work for the next step. Steven is passionate about this and agrees with her work. Apart from this, Steven is curious about how registrants can create an account on the U.S.A. website. She answers that first of all she and her team call back them. The problem is that there are only 85,000 visas per year.  Segment 3After the break, Steven introduces his guest again, Carol Williams, Principal & Attorney at Williams Immigration. He mentions that he has never heard of someone in an exciting way related to her work. Steven remarks that every case is different and wants to know different stories. She answers that she loves complex cases because she is able to ‘really dig in with a client, figure out what they once thought they were supposed to say and then really dig in and get information from them which is not on the 40-page form instructions'. Steven mentions there are many cases in which people get the green card through weddings. Sometimes it is just a fact of business. Segment 4In this last segment, Steven and Carol speak about cases in which employers do not give the legal papers to the employee and the first step is to identify who they are since they have to be responsible to hire the right person in their business. Second step is to carry out her tasks. Steven mentions how passionate Carol is with her hard work. He loves the story behind it. He cheers the audience to get in touch with her in case it is needed.

If you are looking for a job, are you frustrated because you're not getting any responses from your hundreds of applications?  Do you feel like your skills are lacking in finding your dream job?  Are you concerned about a gap in your experience?  It is likely you're not getting interviews because your resume and LinkedIn don't highlight your value... As an employer during the so-called "Talent Shortage" in 2022, SMBs are taking a step back and find out why people are leaving organizations or even the workforce.  Is it the pay? The benefits?  The culture?  Business leaders are looking at different ways to attract and retain quality employees more than ever. We are joined by Soozy Miller, Founder of Braander, Certified Exective Resume Writer, Certified DISC Consultant and Practitioner. Soozy has coached hundreds of job seekers worldwide to land their dream job.  Her knowledge around resume writing, hiring software, the hiring lifecycle, and the hiring team ensures a shorter job search that results in more and better job offers. In addition, Soozy uses assessments like DISC, to help SMB employers create a more engaged, collaborative workforce that can spark meaningful culture improvement in their organizations. Tune in for this sensible conversation at TalkRadio.nyc or watch the Facebook Livestream by Clicking Here.Segment 1Steven introduces his guest, Soozy who supports employees and employers. If you're looking for a job, or even concerned about a gap in your experience and resume, Frey says that it may be that your resume and linkedin don't highlight your value. He says that small and medium sized businesses are looking at why many people are leaving their jobs and industries. Soozy is the founder of BRAANDER, certified executive resume writer, and certified disc consultant and practitioner. She is also a recruiting consultant. Part of her coaching is assessing leadership and soft skills so that executives can be better leaders at their job. BRAANDER trains job seekers to write resumes, cover letters and more. They help job seekers using their experience and leadership skills to build a profile that would be impossible to ignore. For 35 years, Soozy says that she was a marketing writer for companies for newsletter and online content. At one point an agency emailed her asking to write a resume for them. As soon as she started writing them, her clients started getting jobs and more opportunities. Steven and Soozy discussed how things have changed for her since she started helping employees and employers, considering that now there is the great resignation. Soozy says that leaders now need to figure out what employees are looking for and how they can re-engage with them. Both employees and employers are reevaluating where they are now and where they want to be. She also discusses DISC and how engagement affects the relationship with leaders and employees.Segment 2 Steven talks about the ideal job and help especially during this time is a struggle for employers and employees. Sometimes, as Soozy also mentioned, if a business or company is new and backed by investors, they might end up hiring people, feeling pressured to have the presence of strong employees. But the problem is that the business might hire those who aren't a good fit for the job. Soozy and Steven talk about the disc assessment. Disc has become a crucial part of Soozy's practice. She says the soft and leadership skills are crucial in keeping a job for someone; this includes human and interpersonal communication. They discuss the four styles in disc and how we have a different amount in our own personalities. Disc stands for dominance, influence, conscientiousness, and steadiness. She talks more about its effect on leaders' communication with each other in the workplace and its benefits. Like how employers should know how to communicate to their employees and in their “language”, employees should know how to speak to someone's unique leadership experience and value that is specific to them. Soozy also talks with Steven about her thoughts on resume writing. She says that for fonts, you shouldn't use bold or script fonts and says that it's okay to leave white space. The whole page doesn't need to be covered or things will be hard to read. As for bullet points, she says that she wouldn't recommend always using them because your impact statements or accomplishments can get lost. So it's best to reserve bullet points for your value statements.Segment 3Soozy and Steven get into more about different kinds of resume writing. Soozy says that what you feel makes your resume look good to you may not be the same for the person on the other end looking at it. She also mentions a software that companies use to filter out candidates called ATS. Because of this, she says that the content matters much more compared to the design or visual aspect. They also discuss shortages of employees and the great resignation. Soozy says that for the companies and employers, she recommends that they assess employee communication styles as well as what kind of lifestyles they have and find ways to know what benefits they are looking for. For job seekers, she says work with a coach to figure out what their value is. Soozy also gives an example about a client she has worked with who is an executive and how although they wrote a lot of what they did, they had trouble explaining verbally their value and what impact they brought to companies in the past. She also discusses how C-suite positions have changed into being more temporary, bringing someone's value and expertise to specific projects and other work.Segment 4Coming back from the final break, Soozy gives more thoughts about the overall topic of discussion. One thing she mentions is to not have typical resumes, meaning do not use one resume to apply to all positions. This is even if it's the same role for different companies. This is because you have to make sure you are addressing the job posting and what the company is specifically looking for. The language in each posting is different.  She also says to not write down general assets and instead use the companies' language. She also says to look at what impact you have had in other companies and demonstrate your value. Soozy says to make sure you are reading job postings from top to bottom. Soozy again mentions the disc assessment that can be used to solve many issues related to people, behavior, and overall communication. Before closing the show, Steven Frey reads us the answers that Soozy gave him about his favorite questions. Soozy's favorite movie or tv show character is David Rose from Schitt's Creek. Her favorite tv show is Succession. Soozy is not really into music but she does enjoy classical music and the sweet sounds of Beethoven. If you want to learn more about Soozy's work, you can visit braander.com. Next week, Steven will be joined by Carol Williams, an immigration attorney. He thanks Soozy for joining him for today's conversation!

Lori decided to take her experience in business law and co-found a chain of restaurants. Lori works with established brands and new brands looking to franchise, as well as working with individual prospective owners of franchised restaurantsSegment 2 Coming back from the break, Steven asks Lori to expand on her techniques in helping businesses and business owners looking to franchise. Lori advocates that this system can help teams efficiency by making it easier to understand co-workers/employers specific needs and expectations based on their assessment profile. Segment 3Coming back from the break, Steven asks Lori to talk about some stories from her field of work.. Lori says that people who buy and run a successful franchise are very particular, and that true entrepreneurs are terrible franchisees. She says that good franchisees need to have something to offer, but know how to follow systems given to them. Using an example from her time with zing she makes it clear that the key to franchising is consistency, and that her primary concern is the integrity and success of the franchise as a whole and that the reputation of one bad location diminishes the entire network. The importance of a properly laid out and followed system is crucial to the success of a franchise.Segment 4Moving into the final segment of the show, Steven asks Lori what central messages she wants to leave listeners with going into the week. Lori stresses to the listeners the benefits being a franchise owner can have for individuals. She finds franchising is the best way to get into business, as it carries little actual risk to the franchisee who follows the systems they are given. Lori advocates that in the beginning prospective franchisors focus on the availability and consistancy of their products. Stressing the importance of the supplier-franchise relationship, Lori reminds franchisors to collect rebates through their supplier relationships based on franchise purchase volume, as oftentimes royalties are the only source of revenue for the franchisor. Stephen reminds leaders they can find Lori on social media before asking his favorite 3 questions.
