She'll tell us how she got there, how her experiences were affected by being a woman and an immigrant, and why you should consider a career leap too.Juli Mathew is the first Indian-American woman elected to the bench in the United States and the first Asian-American woman elected to the bench in Fort Bend County, Texas. Born in India and raised in Philadelphia, she received her bachelor's degree from Penn State University and her Juris Doctorate from Widener University, now called Delaware Law School. Judge Mathew has practiced in both Pennsylvania and Texas for the last 15 years in the areas of creditor rights, mass tort, oil and gas, probate, and criminal law. She was also the Associate Municipal Judge of the City of Arcola before becoming the presiding Judge of County Court 3 in Fort Bend County, Texas. Judge Mathew's court is a general jurisdiction court and she handles civil, criminal, probate and juvenile matter. She believes in empowering women and ensuring that the judiciary reflects the diversity of its community. She lives in Sugar Land, TX with her husband, Jimmy, and three daughters, Alyna, Ava, and Sofia.

She studied acupuncture at Harvard University and completed Stanford's Physician Wellbeing Director Course. At a national level, Dr. Sharma serves as Co-Chair for Spine & Pain Rehabilitation for the American Academy of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, on the AAPM&R Diversity & Inclusion Committee, and on a national Opioid Task Force. Furthermore, she continues to support alternatives to opioids and has directed a national physician course on navigating the opioid crisis. She has been voted a Top Doctor multiple years in a row by her peers. Dr. Sharma is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University, has published numerous research articles and textbook chapters, and continues to teach and lecture to residents and medical students. Her teaching skills were recognized with the Dean's Award for Excellence in Education at Sidney Kimmel Medical College.  Her upcoming book, The Pain Solution, is a drug-free approach to pain relief and prevention.

She has written about approaches to mental health treatment in minoritized groups and recently presented work on the impact of the pandemic on patients who are immigrants.

She is a co-founder and Chief Program Officer for Vote Run Lead.Vote Run Lead is a national non-partisan organization that trains women to run for office and win, reaching over 36,000 women all across America. Vote Run Lead alumni are serving on city councils, county boards, state houses, supreme courts, and in Congress.

She's telling us how she pivoted from a medical career to a political one, what it's like to sponsor a bill on vaccines that ends up taking on new meaning when a pandemic hits, and why it's important for other parents to seek elected office.Congresswoman Kim Schrier, MD represents Washington State’s 8th Congressional District. Prior to being elected to Congress on November 6, 2018, she spent her career as a pediatrician in Issaquah, WA, working with children and helping families navigate the health care system. As the first pediatrician in Congress, Rep. Schrier brings a critical voice to issues related to health care. Through her own experience as a patient living with Type 1 diabetes, she understands the very real fear of health care costs and access for people living with pre-existing conditions. After graduating from U.C. Berkeley Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in Astrophysics, Rep. Schrier spent a year working at the EPA before attending medical school at U.C. Davis School of Medicine. She completed her residency at the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford University. In 2013, she was named Best Pediatrician in the Greater Seattle Area by Parents Map Magazine. Rep. Schrier lives in Sammamish, WA with her husband, David, and son, Sam.

In this role, she partners with the CDC Foundation’s other senior leaders to develop and drive strategic efforts to embed health equity across the Foundation’s COVID-19 response activities with an explicit focus on addressing systemic racism and its impact on vulnerable populations’ resiliency amidst the pandemic. Her previous leadership roles have included serving as co-CEO of FSG, one of the world’s leading social impact consulting firms; as medical director and then interim commissioner for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health; as senior strategic advisor for a national innovation and improvement network focused on reducing infant mortality; as national medical director of the Medical Legal Partnership for Children; and as the medical director of the pediatric inpatient service at Boston Medical Center, where she was on faculty in the Department of Pediatrics at Boston University School of Medicine. She currently serves on the boards of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, Health Law Advocates, Tobacco Free Mass and Zero to Three. She has published extensively in peer-reviewed literature on health equity and the implication of social policies on child and family wellbeing. Dr. Smith holds a BA with honors in biology from Harvard College, an MD from the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine, and an MPH from the University of California, Berkeley School of Public Health. She completed her pediatrics residency and chief residency at Children’s Hospital Boston and her general pediatrics fellowship at Boston Medical Center, Department of Pediatrics.Letitia Dzirasa, MD joined the Baltimore City government as the Commissioner of Health in March 2019. Her special interests include obesity management and prevention, trauma-informed care in children and adolescents, and expanded use of technology to improve health outcomes. Prior to joining the Health Department, she worked at Fearless Solutions (Fearless), a Baltimore-based digital services firm that builds custom software solutions for local and federal government clients. In her role at Fearless as Health Innovation Officer, Dr. Dzirasa was responsible for managing the Healthcare IT portfolio for the company and provided clinical subject matter expertise to HIT projects. Dr. Dzirasa also has close clinical ties to the Baltimore community, having trained at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in pediatrics and having worked as medical director for school-based health and quality at the Baltimore Medical System from 2013-2016. In addition to holding a BS from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County in biological sciences, Dr. Dzirasa graduated from Meharry Medical College summa cum laude in 2007. She lives in downtown Baltimore with her husband and son.

She’s telling us how a busy mom with no prior political experience became a state senator, what her goals are for her time in office, and why other moms should consider throwing their hats in the ring.Dr. Michelle Au, MD, MPH is an anesthesiologist at Emory-St. Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta, GA. She received her MD from Columbia University and completed her residency training there in 2008. A decade later, she returned to Columbia to study at the Mailman School of Public Health, focusing on healthcare management and policy, and graduated with a Masters of Public Health in 2019. During her third year of medical school, Dr. Au started penning the “Scutmonkey” comic series, inspired by the absurdity of medical training. During her final year of residency training, Dr. Au wrote a medical memoir entitled This Won’t Hurt a Bit (And Other White Lies): My Education in Medicine and Motherhood, which was published by Grand Central Publishing in 2011. She has been a featured writer for The Boston Globe, The Atlantic, Slate, Medium, KevinMD, and Psychology Today. In November 2020, she was elected to the Georgia State Senate for District 48, running on a platform on improving access to care and health outcomes in Georgia. Dr. Au lives in Johns Creek, GA with her husband and three children.

You may recognize her from the recent CNN/Sesame Street Town Hall on racism, so we'll get her recommendations for anti-racist resources for kids and adults alike.Dr. Nia Heard-Garris, MD, MSc is a pediatrician and physician-investigator at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago and in the Department of Pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. She examines the influence of social adversities, including the impact of racism on subsequent child and adolescent health. Dr. Heard-Garris is also interested in the factors that contribute to a child’s ability to thrive despite these experiences. In August 2019, she received her career development award (K01), which is funded by the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, and with this award she plans to investigate adolescent cardiometabolic health. She believes in using research to better inform clinical practice and policy that supports children, their families, and their communities. Dr. Heard-Garris is also an active member of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and serves as the Chair and founding member of the Provisional Section of Minority Health, Equity, and Inclusion. Dr. Heard-Garris completed a prestigious Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholars Fellowship at the University of Michigan. She earned her Master of Science in Health and Healthcare Research. She received her Doctor of Medicine (MD) from Howard University College of Medicine and helped to launch the student-run free clinic serving DC residents. Dr. Heard-Garris earned her Bachelor of Science in biology at Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia. She lives with her husband and 6-year-old son in Chicago.
