This #coachbetter episode is another in our series of coaching case studies, with one of Kim's amazing clients, Lana Yashchyna, 4th grade classroom teacher at the American International School in Kuwait. Lana is a graduate of The Coach Certificate & Mentorship Program and when they recorded this episode she had just finished the program. These case study episodes are designed to share the story of a coach, and the development of their coaching program and practice in their unique setting.  In this conversation Kim and Lana talk about ... Why coaching was so impactful for her as a classroom teacher How she decided to make the move from classroom to coach How she's been building a coaching culture in her 4th grade team What prepared her to be ready to build a coaching culture in a teaching role Why coaching is so essential in a high pressure school environment If coaching is sustainable as a full time classroom teacher All the steps it took her to build a coaching culture on her team This episode is a fantastic example of all of the ways that classroom teachers can influence a culture of coaching at the team level - and why this is ultimately not a sustainable combination of roles for the long term! EPISODE 141 SEASON 4 | Tune in for the 2nd half of Janna and Nate Noorlander's discussion on media literacy. The race is on to use the coupons below for The Nomadic Professor. The first person to enter nomadicsharkSUB gets 75% off the life of the subscription.  The first person to enter nomadicsharkPURCH gets 75% off their first purchase. ABOUT OUR GUEST | In college, Nate Noorlander double-majored in philosophy and history teaching. After a stint as a project manager with a disaster repair company, he moved to Beijing, China, where he taught IGCSE and A-level history at the Cambridge International Curriculum Center of Beijing Normal University. He also spent time touring India and trekking in Nepal. Worn out by the Beijing air, Nate moved home with his family and taught English and history at Mountainville Academy, and then the American International School of Utah. At AISU he developed mini-courses in boredom and awareness (probably close to what many people call mindfulness) based on Heidegger's ideas about technology, and Nicholas Carr's ideas about what the internet does to our brains, areas of study that (perhaps ironically) he finds compelling. Done in this time by life in the beautiful Mountain West he returned to Beijing, where he taught IB History, IB English, and Theory of Knowledge at the Yew Chung International School of Beijing. When Covid-19 hit he was coaching the boys' basketball team and gearing up for an end-of-season tournament in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, ignorant of what was coming. The trip was canceled, his family just made it out of Beijing on a flight three times its usual cost, and he stuck it out in the shuttered city for another six weeks. When life didn't change, he left too. Since then it's been all history with The Nomadic Professor. LISTENER COUPON CODE ★Request your coupon code to use on any purchase at bookshark.com. Understanding partisanship, political bias, and the history and technology of politics in America is important for understanding bias and what motivates a person's reasoning. Nate: Tools to help us understand arguments. Language is where people do things that help us understand arguments. It's best used by people who already have a mature understanding of media and how to read an break down arguments. Nate: Students will learn how to navigate the internet and make judgments about the reliability and credibility of information. Janna: When can we expect the course to be available for purchase?  Nate: One unit is available now with more coming soon. Nate: I would always be asking the question and training my students to ask the question whether they're four years old or 24 years old.  Thanks to show sponsor BookShark. EPISODE 140 SEASON 4 | It used to be that news only came from a few vetted sources, the news on radio or tv and the printed paper. With the advance of technology, the news is literally at our fingertips coming from the world over and from countless sources. It's also given rise to people only getting ‘certain' news based upon what they've clicked before and those ever-present algorithms. Join Janna and Nate from the Nomadic Professor, as they discuss media literacy, something becoming more crucial to us as we teach and empower our children to become aware of the world around them. ABOUT OUR GUEST | In college, Nate Noorlander double-majored in philosophy and history teaching. QUOTABLES Nate:  So all of our content, whether it's American history, or something else features the professor on location, all over the world. Janna: All right, so fun fact the Nomadic Professor himself is a homeschool dad, correct?  Nate: Yeah, that's part of the ideas sort of, we're in a time where technology and the structure of our educational options allow us to kind of break out of the brick-and-mortar classroom. Janna: And so we've talked just personally about how to make sure that our children who are being homeschooled are able to navigate well Nate: You also brought attention to the way media acts as a filter for what you hear and what you don't hear. So that's a unique phenomenon in and of itself, because what feels urgent, what feels critical, what feels like it's worth your attention in a given moment, what stories have gained traction, as opposed to, you know, and gain traction for reasons that are not always related to their significance or their importance Janna: The bottom line is dollars in so like you had said, Well, of course, this story that I was talking about, why is that going to get dollars maybe in their algorithms that bring sadness to our world. Nate: There are honest actors who are just trying to survive and not deceive people, but they need their businesses to stay afloat. And so they can't just operate on purely altruistic impulses. We learned firsthand from our guest, Jessica Simmons, who shared a multi-part Going Global Story that models these traits. Jessica Simmons is from Melbourne, Australia. She has over 19 years of experience as a qualified educator. Working as a drama and humanities teacher across schools in various states of Australia and China (albeit only remotely), she also has over nine years of leadership experience. During a hiatus from teaching, she worked in the Museum and Local Government sectors for ten years (and had two children). Her most recent positions include Head of Arts at an independent school in regional Australia and Director of Performing Arts for Wellington College, Hangzhou, China. She has a Master's of Education from Melbourne University, a Bachelor of Arts (Drama), and a Bachelor of Education (Secondary). A keen netballer, hiker, reader, and theatre-goer, she loves to spend the weekend exploring new places with her husband and children. Her next adventure will be in Abuja, Nigeria, where she is moving in July  2023 to teach Performing Arts at the American International School of Abuja - with her husband and two children (aged 9 and 13) in tow.The guiding question for the episode was, “How did you use tenacity, grit, and perseverance in your quest to become an international educator?”We discussed Jessica's four-year journey in and out of international education. Along the way, we learned of her experiences through the pandemic and, more recently, teaching in Australia while pursuing the international teaching lifestyle. Nate Noorlander, from the Nomadic Professor, joined me for this week's episode.  The Nomadic Professor is an online, non-partisan, high school history courses that teach students the core narrative and all of its accompanying skills: taking notes, making original judgments, reasoning with evidence, reading between the lines, following a rubric, writing a defensible argument, working with bias, and much, much more. I love talking history, especially when we can go deeper and see the connections that can be found.  Nate didn't disappoint!  He has lived a fascinating life and has been a bit nomadic himself!  Be sure to listen where he and his family got caught during COVID!  I'm surprised he got out! NATE'S BIOGRAPHY In college I double-majored in philosophy and history teaching, then moved to Beijing, China, to teach IGCSE and A Level history at the Cambridge International Curriculum Center of Beijing Normal University. I also spent time touring in India and trekking in Nepal. Worn out by the Beijing air I moved back to Utah with my family and taught English and history at Mountainville Academy, and then the American International School of Utah. At AISU I developed mini-courses in boredom and awareness, based on Heidegger's ideas about technology, and Nicholas Carr's ideas about what the internet does to our brains. Worn out this time by life in the beautiful mountain west I returned to Beijing, where I taught IB history, IB English, and Theory of Knowledge at the Yew Chung International School of Beijing. When Covid-19 hit I was coaching the boys basketball team and gearing up for our end-of-season tournament in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. The trip was canceled, my family just made it out of Beijing on a flight three times its usual cost, and I stuck it out in the shuttered city for another six weeks. When life didn't change, I left too. Since then it's been all history with the Nomadic Professor. What would happen to learning if you collapsed the timetable, paired teachers, and co-designed community and passion driven projects? This is what American International School does for one week each year with its "PBL intensives." It is now in iteration 3.0.  The results have been incredible...  Teachers have re-configured their classrooms to be more learner-centered. Built partnerships for learning experiences with the community to make them more authentic.  Invited student voice and agency to ensure learning meets their needs.  In short, it's transformed the culture around teaching and learning. Zachary Post, the Midddle School Principal was at the helm of these PBL intensives. Sólo un año después, en 1998 aparecía su segundo disco ‘Without You I’m Nothing’. El disco aparecería un año después, ‘Battle for the Sun’.

"A retreat sets the tone, sets the table, but throughout the year, whether it's a little sprinkle of a community-building activity, an exercise that is reflective, or a revisit to something that they did at the retreat, that's even more important. The retreat is just the first step... then we maintain that culture in our ensembles."Melanie Brink grew up and began her career in South Dakota, U.S.A. prior to teaching abroad. Her undergraduate degree in vocal music is from Augustana University and she holds a Master's in Educational Leadership from Southwest Minnesota University. She moved to the Sultanate of Oman 20 years ago to begin a choral music program at The American International School of Muscat (TAISM). There she teaches about 200 choral students in grades 6-12.  She prioritizes developing heart within her ensembles through retreats and inclusion activities that help her students learn how to be adaptive collaborators and leaders. Melanie designs activities and themes that promote a sense of belonging; promoting community, healthy singing and a meaningful experience. The selection of repertoire and telling a story through connection and design in the performance is a process she deeply enjoys.Melanie applies her training of the Mindfulness in Education Institute, a practice of centering - paying attention to the present in her rehearsals. She has also completed the Thinking Collaborative (Adaptive Schools) Seminar which presents a productive, practical set of strategies for developing collaborative groups in becoming effective and better equipped to resolve complex issues around student learning. She has presented workshops for both AMIS and ACDA music educator conferences. Melanie has been a guest conductor for the AMIS Middle School Mixed Honor Choir, the ASIAC Choir Festival in Chennai, and the MESAC Senior Fine Arts Chorus in Abu Dhabi.Since March 2004, she has served as the founder and Artistic Director of TAISM's annual Festival of Choirs. Nancy Kroonenberg (ASIJ High School Assistant Principal 1996-2013) Educator Before wending my way to ASIJ, I lived in the United States, France, The Netherlands, and Hong Kong. ASIJ was my third international school. Pre-Covid we were inveterate travelers with trips to Machu Picchu, Uzbekistan, Cambodia, South Africa among a few of our favorites. I retired (sort of) from ASIJ in 2013. Within a half year I was working at the American International School of Rotterdam (AISR), first as Interim Secondary Principal, then as Admissions Director. AISR is an IB school rather than the AP Program which I knew at ASIJ so it was a steep learning curb. I retired again (sort of) in 2016. I have since committed myself to volunteer work. I was keen to stay connected with internationals so joined a help desk where we offer info about schools, jobs, healthcare, housing and everything else to international newcomers in Amsterdam. After four decades in schools, it was difficult not being among students. Well, that has been short-lived as well. WASC, the organization which accredits ASIJ, needs volunteers to serve on visiting teams. I have been doing that since 1989. Since being back in Europe I have been on WASC teams in Sweden, Italy, Spain, Israel, South Africa and Qatar. On two teams, my teammate was a friend from ISSH in Tokyo. Gabrielle Glancy has been an entrepreneur since the age of four when she sold stickballs for ten cents less than cost back to the boys who had hit them onto her grandfather’s roof in Sea Gate, Coney Island, where she grew up. Just before founding New Vision Learning, at the height of the dot com boom, Ms. Glancy invented Facebook (before there was such a thing) and called it Townsquare.com. The founder of eBay, whose daughter she had helped get into Williams, told her it was a brilliant idea, but that to generate revenue, she would need to sell ads. In todays’ episode, I sat down to have a face to face conversation with educational consultant and cartoonist, Matt Smith.  Matt has a great story and is genuinely a person of the world. He is a third culture kid. If you haven’t heard this term before, this is what the actual definition is: Third culture kids (TCK) are people raised in a culture other than their parents' or the culture of the country named on their passport (where they are legally considered native) for a significant part of their early development years. As a young person, Matt lived in Germany, Thailand, and Malaysia. Having attended international schools, Matt was constantly exposed to a multitude of different cultures and experiences and it is during these very formative years when he began to develop an identify that was deeply rooted in a love of film-making.  After graduating from high school in Malaysia, Matt attended the Vancouver Film School then ultimately went on to get a degree in education.  Matt jumped right into the world of international teaching at the American International School of Japan which is located in Tokyo. From there he went on to teach in Kuwait as well.  What I appreciate about Matt’s story and what you will learn from listening to this episode is his ability to take initiative in his life and to follow his passions. As a very creative person who enjoys writing and story telling, Matt began to develop himself as a cartoonist in order to pass on his love of story-telling and creativity to young people.  Although he had a short stint in Cartooning school, he is very much self-taught. You’ll hear about Matt’s journey as a cartoonist and how he uses cartooning as a means to develop student’s literacy skills in the classroom.  Matt now travels and presents at many different international schools around the world.  He’s a man who continues to take action in his life to not only be his best but to live a life of purpose and meaning through his work.  Matt’s Bio Matt Smith is a Canadian/British cartoonist, filmmaker and educator. He has lived all over the world in countries like Malaysia, Japan and Kuwait. He currently lives in Glasgow, Scotland where he continues to create comics and facilitate comic workshops. Matt has taken his comics workshops to schools, comic conventions and art galleries in North America, Europe, Asia and Africa. In May 2018, Matt facilitated a panel on creating comics at the Vancouver Comics Arts Festival with fellow cartoonist Ryan Howe.  He is best known for his humorous autobiographical Smith vs Smith comics, which can be found online at SmithvsSmith.com, on the Tapas app and in the Comixology and ComixCentral online stores. You can also buy Smith vs Smith comics in book stores across Canada and the UK. Matt's comics typically focus on travel, the ups and downs of modern relationships, and the joys and frustrations of cat ownership.  Matt also appears at comic conventions across Canada and the Middle East where he sells his books and runs workshops for future cartoonists. While Matt is best known for his humorous autobiographical Smith vs Smith series, Matt has branched out to the horror genre, creating Gruesome Comics, horror stories written by Matt and illustrated by a host of international artists. The recent closure of the American International School of Utah — a public-private hybrid charter — has displaced more than 1,300 students and left potentially millions of dollars in unpaid debts, including hundreds of thousands of allegedly misspent special education funds owed to, but unlikely to be repaid to, the state of Utah. A new board has been established to oversee the nitty-gritty of shutting down the AISU organization. But it says there’s little hope of recovering taxpayer dollars, and it’s unclear who, if anyone, will face consequences from the situation, as virtually no one with direct involvement in the public school was an elected official.
