Fred Harris grew up in the small town of Walters, Oklahoma, where he was born in a two-room house. He was first elected to the Oklahoma State Senate where he was one of its youngest members. He made an unsuccessful race for governor of Oklahoma in 1962. In 1964, he entered the race to serve out the unexpired term of U.S. Senator Robert S. Kerr who had died while in office. He was 33 years old when he successfully defeated former Governor J. Howard Edmonson, who had been appointed to succeed Kerr, in the Democratic primary, and narrowly upset Republican nominee and legendary Oklahoma football coach Bud Wilkinson. While in Washington, D.C. he encountered such giants as Lyndon B. Johnson, Hubert H. Humphrey and Robert Kennedy. In this interview, Fred talks about the personalities of these figures–including the tension between Johnson and Kennedy. Harris accomplished much during his distinguished career, championing human rights at home and around the world. Twice elected to the U.S. Senate from Oklahoma, Fred Harris became Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque. He is the author of numerous works of fiction and nonfiction.

Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we are talking to actor Christopher Murray, who we find out, was quite literally born into show business. From both his maternal and paternal grandparents as well as both of his parents, Christopher likely couldn't have escaped a career in front of the camera if he tried. So who are his parents? Well, both are Oscar nominated and his mother is a two-time Emmy award winner. Can you guess? None other than actors Don Murray & Hope Lange. Between his parents, they have starred in films and TV productions with Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Robert Wagner, Charles Laughton, Roddy McDowell, Michelle Lee, Kathleen Turner, Joan Crawford, Glenn Ford, Suzy Parker and more. And if that isn't enough, his stepfather was a giant of a director,  Alan J. Pakula who directed some of the best films of the 70s as well. Our time  with Christopher was more a conversation than an interview and frankly, those are the ones we love best on this podcast. We jumped around a lot but the connections were never more apparent than when we were discussing how it is that Charles Nelson Reilly spent so much time at his house. We delved into just about everything with Christopher to the story of how his parents helped displaced European war refugees from WWII & the Korean War that still functions to this day as well as the fabulous dinner parties his mother gave that were a safe haven for gay Hollywood couples in an era when things like that were very rare. This conversation that spans the stage, film and television and involves everyone from Hubert H. Humphrey to Eleanor Roosevelt, Sean Connery to Ed Harris & Freddy Kruger to Don Deer. But to hear all of those stories, we had to spread this episode into two parts – there was just too much great stuff to cut out. You'll have to take a listen to this episode, part one,  of the Rarified Heir Podcast to begin this verbal scavenger hunt.  Everyone has a story.

Last week marked a significant milestone in U.S. political history. It was 75 years ago on July 14, 1948 that a young Minneapolis mayor, Hubert Humphrey, got up before the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia and implored the convention to adopt a civil rights plank to its platform, saying, “The time has arrived in America for the Democratic party to get out of the shadow of states' rights and to walk forthrightly into the bright sunshine of human rights.”Humphrey's call to action swayed enough delegates, paving the way for advancements in the fight for equality and justice and helping to launch Humphrey's national political career. Humphrey would go onto to become a Minnesota U.S. senator and Vice President in Lyndon Johnson's administration. The speech and what led up to it is the focus of a new book: "Into the Bright Sunshine: Young Hubert Humphrey and the Fight for Civil Rights.” MPR News host Cathy Wurzer spoke with author Samuel Freedman about the book. Freedman is an award-winning author and journalist, a Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award finalist, and a professor at Columbia University.

QUOTES FOR REFLECTION “Friendship is the hardest thing in the world to explain. It's not something you learn in school. But if you haven't learned the meaning of friendship, you really haven't learned anything.” ~Muhammad Ali (1942-2016), professional boxer and activist “There is nothing on this earth more to be prized than true friendship.” ~Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274), Dominican friar and priest “The greatest healing therapy is friendship and love.” ~Hubert H. Humphrey (1911-1978), 38th Vice President of United States “I would rather walk with a friend in the dark, than alone in the light.” ~Helen Keller (1880-1968), author and activist “Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend.” ~Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968), minister and civil rights leader “The truth is, everyone is going to hurt you. You just got to find the ones worth suffering for.” ~Bob Marley (1945-1981), Jamaican singer, musician, and songwriter “Friendship is unnecessary.... It has no survival value; rather it is one of those things which give value to survival…. Friendship ... is born at the moment when one man says to another ‘What! You too? I thought that no one but myself…'” ~C.S. Lewis (1898-1963) in The Four Loves “Let us see the Father as love. Do look not at him as a father who is always critical, but as one who is most kind and tender.” ~John Owen (1616-1683), English theologian in Communion with God “How very kindly and lovingly does the Lord allure all hearts to himself, and in this way he stirs them to believe in him.” ~Martin Luther (1483-1546), German reformer SERMON PASSAGE John 15:12-17 (ESV) 1 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. 9 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. 11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. 12 “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15 No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. 17 These things I command you, so that you will love one another. 18 “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. 21 But all these things they will do to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have been guilty of sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 Whoever hates me hates my Father also. 24 If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin, but now they have seen and hated both me and my Father. 25 But the word that is written in their Law must be fulfilled: ‘They hated me without a cause.' 26 “But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me. 27 And you also will bear witness, because you have been with me from the beginning.”

A recent warm thoughts column provided information about "Make a Difference Day," which is October 26th. It is a day when everyone is encouraged to make a difference in their community and world by making it a day of caring. An annual national day of helping others. Across the nation, about one million Americans will help others on this Make a Difference Day. Can one person make a difference? We are aware that there have been many difference makers in history. To name a few, we remember that Thomas Edison brought us out of darkness and into electric light. Henry Ford gave us the Model T. Eli Whitney gave us the cotton gin. Ben Franklin provided our biofocals. John Bunyan guided the progress of millions of pilgrims. Then there was Columbus, Lincoln, Beethoven, Einstein, and many others who make a difference. Our lives can be blessed by a caring community. I, personally, experienced this following a car accident that took six months of recovery. The outpouring of love and compassion was phenomenal. Over six hundred cards and prayerful letters of encouragement for a speedy recovery were received. Visits and telephone calls from all parts of the country. A surprise call even came from caring friends who live in Switzerland and England, one afternoon. I experienced a caring community with their points of light and how they certainly can light up one's life and make a difference. I'm very thankful for caring communities around the world. Whoever you are, and wherever you are, thanks for all your caring.Warm Thoughts: Caring is the garden where love grows. The world is blessed by people who care. The impersonal hand of government can never replace the helping hand of a neighbor. Hubert H. Humphrey. A little time to care for others, a little time to share with others - that's what makes someone like you so nice to know and to be with too. Helen Steiner Rice. We will chart how Humphrey built up the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party in Minnesota and his humane, pragmatic, and consensus-driven approach to midcentury liberalism.

Schwartz previously served as U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees, and Migration. In his conversation with Benjamin Wittes, he sketches the key aspects of U.S. refugee policy, explaining how it both protects the security of the United States and at times undermines its ability to accept refugees. Schwartz, who believes the United States has an interest in alleviating the Syrian refugee crisis, outlines what a coherent refugee policy would look like, and argues that the reforms must go beyond simply accepting more refugees.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/lawfare. It's Turnquist Friday!  Rick Turnquist, blogger and author, joins Kim in studio to discuss the intentional misleading narrative regarding forced minimum wages and his featured op-ed, Minimum Wage Fail (kimmonson.com/featured_articles/minimum-wage-fail/).  Minimum wage jobs are a means to learn skills and gain experience for future, better paying jobs.  HB21-175 Prescription Drug Affordability Review Board is all about price controls. Hal Van Hercke, founder and owner of Castlegate Knife and Tool (castelgate.com), addresses minimum wage.  It is appalling that politicians continue their assault on small business while having no business experience themselves when pursuing more draconian policies.  Minimum wage can easily wipe out the average profit of 7% for many small businesses.  If entry level job salaries are increased, everyone above them will be looking for an increase as well.  Employers will look to job reductions, automated jobs and delayed hiring to preserve their businesses if forced minimum wages are implemented. Dr. Jill Vecchio, radiologist saving lives and informing listeners weekly on important medical issues, discusses new proposed HIPAA rules.  Dr. Vecchio summarizes the new proposed changes and the results of the changes including phone vendors will not be restricted by HIPAA and the patient's medical records will no longer have restricted access.  Visit this link to read the proposed changes:  https://www.hhs.gov/sites/default/files/hhs-ocr-hipaa-nprm.pdf.  Dr. Vecchio encourages people to make comments.  Comments are due by May 6, 2021.  On page 2 of the document the following information is given: You may submit comments to this proposed rule, identified by RIN 0945-AA00 by any of the following methods: Federal eRulemaking Portal You may submit comments to this proposed rule, identified by RIN 0945-AA00 by any of the following methods: You may submit electronic comments at Federal Register: Proposed Modifications to the HIPAA Privacy Rule To Support, and Remove Barriers to, Coordinated Care and Individual Engagement Regular, Express, or Overnight Mail: You may mail comments to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office for Civil Rights, Attention: Proposed Modifications to the HIPAA Privacy Rule to Support, and Remove Barriers to, Coordinated Care and Individual Engagement NPRM, RIN 0945- AA00, Hubert H. If water is staying out, it’s good. If it’s coming in, it’s the end of the world.” Central Roofing has done its part to keep roofs from leaking for more than 90 years. Discussing friendships this month! How to deepen them, how to avoid all or nothing thinking in regards to "Toxic friendships" and how to get your needs met! Resources: Frientimacy: How to Deepen Friendships for Lifelong Health and Happiness by Shasta Nelson Quotes: “The greatest gift of life is friendship, and I have received it.” --Hubert H. Humphrey "A fool takes offense when none is intended."--Proverb “It seems impossible to love people who hurt and disappoint us, yet there are no other kinds of people” --Frank Andrews “Forgiveness is a sign that the person who has wronged you means more to you than the wrong they have dealt.”--Ben Greenhalgh Shasta Nelson quotes: “Many believe that friendships are supposed to be easy and comfortable: pain free, all fun, total joy. I’ve heard many quip, 'I don’t do drama' as though they are so enlightened that they can’t be bothered with anything that feels messy. But the truth is that conflict and change is part of any healthy relationship, and so we must cease viewing our collisions as bad signs and instead see them as invitations for growth and depth.” “Our relationships are mirrors: They show us not just how loved and valuable we are but also where we have room to grow” “It’s easy to buy into the myth that help is only sincere if they initiate it, but that’s really not the case. The point is having our needs met, not needing someone to guess them. And any friend who’s willing to hear our needs and meet them is the very definition of sincerity.” “The most important actions in strengthening friendships are to affirm what we value and to let others know what kind of support would be meaningful to us”

Daily Devotion: Do not get caught up in the destination that you lose sight of the journey.  God places people in your life to to walk alongside you.  Who has encouraged your walk and consistently been there to cheer you on?  Take notice of these special people in your life and remember to say, "Thank you."   Proverbs 27:17, "As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another."   The greatest gift of life is friendship, and I have received it. -Hubert H.
