When I heard that a pediatric organization was so focused on mental health screenings in their office, my mind couldn't quite get around the need for mental health screeners for children. However, that's what made me particularly interested to sit down and talk with Shannon Fox-Levine MD, FAAP, President, Pediatrician, and Kimberly Brennan, Practice Administrator at Palm Beach Pediatrics. Their focus on keeping infants and young children safe both mentally and physically is admirable and a model for so many other pediatric organizations. Of course, here at Healthcare IT Today we were particularly interested in how they were using Yosi Health to administer these screenings along with improving the patient experience. Dr. Fox and Brennan highlight how the digital screenings through Yosi Health had a number of advantages. First, patients prefer filling out electronic forms at their convenience much more than paper forms on a clipboard in the office. Second, the digital screeners are integrated right into Palm Beach Pediatrics EHR so the data is readily available for the clinicians. Maryland Endocrine has quickly made the big journey from paper billing to on-site payments. The company had eClinicalWorks installed since 2004 (they were actually eClinicalWorks' 34th customer), but when Kimberly Stahl, Practice Administrator, came to the company, it was still collecting payments by sending paper bills by post. Bills were often delayed for months or never sent at all. The company's eClinicalWorks deployment had not been updated for years and was suffering from the bugs of outdated software. Stahl helped to save the eClinicalWorks deployment, after which the company rapidly modernized its workflow. Patients face a kiosk when they enter, saving time at check-in. They are notified of bills by text and phone calls, so payments have dramatically increased. The cost of billing is also greatly reduced. In this video interview, Navin Jain, Practice Administrator at Cookeville, described how they put in place the key parts of an improved workflow. They streamline their forms and allow patients to fill out information at home. Plus, they automated most of the check-in process for patients. As a result, the staff have less work, the clinic can prepare for the patient's visit in advance, and the clinicians can give the patient more face-to-face attention. This is done through their use of CareCognitics and its deep integration with athenahealth. Because CareCognitics is responsive, changes requested by the clinic can be made in a couple hours or a couple days. Cookeville has been able to eliminate some vendors and simplify operations. Introduction to Katie Johnson - Practice Administrator
Ep 35 - Katie Johnson - Practice Administrator
Earlier this year, our founder Annette Hines introduced the sister company of Special Needs Law Group of Massachusetts, Special Needs Family Services. As part of this launch, we brought on new staff members to help us hit the ground running in 2021. One of these additions to the team is Kerri Whalen, our new Practice Administrator and the guest for this episode of Parenting Impossible. The subject of this episode is one that we get asked about a lot: What happens when you move your family from one state to the next? While states’ rights can be liberating, they also present challenges as there is no uniformity of laws and benefits. This can cause a lot of problems for families who move to a different state and end up receiving disparate treatment from what they have gotten used to and relied on. Kerri knows this circumstance all too well as she recently moved from Maryland to Massachusetts with her family, including one of her teenage sons who is on the autism spectrum. Kerri shares her experiences of trusting her gut to know what was best for her son, learning from her mistakes along the way, and navigating the different systems and rights between states that so many parents struggle with as they relocate their families. Annette Hines has been practicing in the areas of Special Needs, Elder Law, and Estate Planning for more than 20 years. Ms. Hines brings personal experience with special needs to her practice and podcasts as the mother of two daughters, one of whom passed away from Mitochondrial disease in November 2013. This deep, personal understanding of special needs fuels her passion for quality special needs planning and drives her dedication to help others within the special needs community.

In this special episode of the MGMA Insights podcast, we continue a series focused on COVID-19 and how it’s impacting healthcare professionals and their patients. Throughout this series, we’ll share conversations with experts regarding challenges such as staffing, communication, patient education, advocacy and more. You can keep up with the latest by visiting the MGMA COVID-19 Action Center at MGMA.com/covid. Joining us here is Kelly Ladd, CMPE, CEO, Practice Administrator, Piedmont Internal Medicine. Here are highlights from her interview: * “I just don’t feel like some of these folks understand what’s happening on the frontline of the physician office. They don’t understand that we are not able to get basic protection like surgical masks, gloves are on backorder, and that we cannot do these tests.” * “We don’t have the test, and if we had the test, we can’t perform the test because we don’t have the proper safety equipment to do so. Thus far, I don’t know if I have any huge momentum in getting the attention of some of our officials to help us out – but I sure am trying.” * “To me, it seems that if people are going to put the doctors and the doctor’s offices on the frontline in testing the virus, that people need to make sure we have the resources to do so. I kind of equate it to, if we’re going to war and the Marines land, would you send the Marines in without a gun? Of course not.” Previous episode in the series: COVID-19 Update: An action plan for medical practices and healthcare professionals (https://bit.ly/3aUWqjG)

Jeff welcomes to the podcast CFO & Practice Administrator of Access Omnicare and the FORM Hand, Wrist & Elbow Institute, Amirra Besh. Amirra is also a strong wellness advocate and practitioner who has competed in more than 8 Spartan Races. In this episode, Amirra and Jeff talk about the importance of incorporating wellness in our overall professional environment and community to lead by example. This can happen in many ways. For example, Amirra’s medical practice pays for employees to participate in a local breast cancer walk. Employees of the practice not only get out in the local community and give back, they also have the opportunity to exercise and bond with their colleagues. Another important way Amirra’s practice walks the talk is by encouraging their employees to take time off work to participate in their children’s school programs. The point of Walk the Talk is to integrate community wellness and personal wellness strategies in our lives. What does Amirra suggest we do to Walk the Talk?Suggestion 1 - Think about ways you can practice wellness AND give back to your local community. Suggestion 2 - Encourage and find ways for others around you to participate, like your colleagues and their families. Suggestion 3 - Model it! Start prioritizing and incorporating wellness activities into your daily routine to lead by example. Or just listen to episode 55 with Amirra Besh, Walk the Talk! Most importantly, start walking the talk! Take simple steps in your life, practice, and community to bring wellness to yourself and others. Amirra BeshAmirra Besh is a wife, mom, and boss! Pump the brakes on your week and take 10 minutes to make your life as a surgeon just a little better…Jeff welcomes to the mini-podcast CFO & Practice Administrator of Access Omnicare and FORM Hand, Wrist & Elbow Institute, Amirra Besh. The topic of discussion in this episode is Walk and Talk!As the practice administrator of two busy medical groups, Amirra is a strong wellness advocate. She witnesses first-hand the importance of healthy and (relatively) balanced lifestyles of the healthcare professionals under her management. Her husband and partner also happens to be a busy orthopaedic surgeon, so she has the unique perspective of seeing it from both a professional and personal perspective. She notes that we’re all short on time, and can struggle to meaningfully connect. Amirra uses her strategy of “walk and talk” with people in her life to find time to connect. This can be an effective strategy at home with your kids or spouse, or in a professional setting with your peers. The connection you create and the subject of conversation can be deep and meaningful, or something more light-hearted and fun. Her important take-away is that it doesn’t take much to ask someone to go for a walk… and talk. The result can be impactful far beyond the amount of time, energy, and effort it requires. A long or short conversation. Inside the hospital or outside in nature with the family dog. Amirra reminds us that the power is in the connection. What does Amirra suggest we do to walk and talk?Step 1 - Think of someone in your personal or professional life that you have been meaning to connect with.Step 2 - Ask this person to go for a walk, or a coffee, or something else simple that doesn’t take much energy. Step 3 - Talk! Have a conversation and connect. It is that simple! Simple actions can lead to big steps forward in making deeper connections! Amirra BeshAmirra Besh is a wife, mom & boss! She is a busy mother of five, healthcare administrator & CFO for FORM Hand, Wrist & Institute and Access Omnicare. Currently residing in the San Francisco Bay Area, Amirra is the President of a local chapter for National Charity League and a Spartan racer. Joining me this week on Practicing with the Masters, my special guest is Linda Miles. Linda is a certified speaker, consultant, founder and author. As a long time veteran in the dental industry, Linda started at 17, making just a dollar an hour as a receptionist and dental assistant in the 1960s. She worked her way up to Practice Administrator in the 1970s, and in that role, she discovered that practice and team development was NOT something that Dentists were taught in Dental School. In 1978, armed with a $500 loan, Linda started a small consulting and speaking business, which she grew over the last 30 years, to become one of the most successful in the dental industry.
