Episode #522: 2024 IndyCar Grand Prix Of Detroit Review

Sorry this one's a little late folks, Dre was caught up with the day job, but allow yourself to catch up with what we thought about one of the most chaotic races in recent times, the 2024 Detroit Grand Prix! It was THE chaotic race of 2024. Eight cautions, 12 driving penalties handed out (Four of which to Will Power, whose race position looked like an EKG monitor), and FORTY-SEVEN per cent of the race ran under yellow, including 20 straight in the middle of a damp Detroit where everyone was caught out by the bumpy braking point into Turn 3 on Chambers Street. Yikes. In the end, Scott Dixon kept a cool head and did what he does best - save fuel brilliantly when a race broke out at the end and lead a Honda 1-2-3-4 in Chevrolet's back yard, and the gang try to make sense of one of the craziest IndyCar races in modern times, including a Penske implosion! But there was also two major PR nightmare the series delivered that we had to discuss - Santino Ferrucci having a shoving match with Kyle Kirkwood and dropping a homophobic remark when interviewed about it (Right on the first day of Pride Month). Then Agustin Canapino and the first part of his verbal tirade after Theo Pourchaire hit him during the race, and Ricardo Juncos calls him a "Son of a thousand whores" on the team radio. There'll be more on this next week, but see where the story began. All that and more on another Motorsport101!

It wouldn't be an IndyCar season without an absolute mess of a finale! In a 95-lap race at Laguna Seca in Monterrey, we had 35 laps of caution over eight separate incidents, 17 penalties handed out, 8 of which were for avoidable contact, and race winner Scott Dixon won despite having to do a drive-through penalty after less than 10 laps. Make it make sense. Well, the boys will certainly try to do just that as they break down while trying to break down the Laguna Seca race as IndyCar's season finale. Was this a good or bad example of a s***show race? Was the track partially to blame? And is it wild if a pace car has to get refuelled in the middle of a race? We also talk about the Leader's Circle payout system as Agustin Canapino and Juri Vips both earned their team over a million bucks after scraping into the Top 22 and how Devlin, didn't. It's a wild story within a wild race! And finally... should IndyCar have an all-star race? The series is adding a new $1m dollar challenge at The Thermal Club for 2024, and we have all the details! Is it good for the series? All that and more on Motorsport101, and stay tuned, there's a season review next week!

And so it came to be that the battle for the Astor Cup went all the way to the final round at Laguna Seca, and we had drama all the way through to the end. Will Power dominated qualifying ahead of *checks notes* Callum Illot?! To take a record-breaking pole position, one more than the great Mario Andretti. All this while Josef Newgarden spun at the Corkscrew and Scott Dixon just didn't get out of Round 1. Josef went from 25th to 2nd in the race in vain, Power took a comfy 3rd like he has all year young, Dixon was nowhere, and... ALEX PALOU WON BY HOW MUCH?! In this episode, we talk about all the drama that Laguna Seca had off and on the track, all the protagonists. And more on Alex Palou's crushing win to close out the year and the announcement he made midweek to stay at Chip Ganassi Racing at the #10 car. There's ramifications with that too, such as Felix Rosenqvist staying at McLaren and all this beef over... F1 tests. F*** sake. All that and us going over our favourite moments in 2022, on Motorsport101!

Just what the IndyCar world needed - Another dominant New Zealander called Scott. But my goodness, he's driving out of his skin at the moment. In IndyCar's penultimate race of the year, it was Scott McLaughlin that kept his very thin chances of winning the Astor Cup alive with a lights-to-flag victory. Scott led 104 out of 110 laps and never really looked like losing. Is he the favourite for 2023? We also give an extended deep dive into the three main contenders going into the season finale. Will Power, a man who's come alive post Indy 500. 11 Top 4 finishes this season, and with a 2nd in Portland, remains in control with a 20 point lead. Will Power find a way to shrug off the concerns over his luck in title deciders? Scott Dixon has been a model of consistency as well. His qualifying has been lacking but has always come back as a strong Sunday man. An average finish of under 7 is incredible. But if this doesn't become Astor Cup #7 for the Kiwi, will his 1mph speed limit breach at the Indy 500 cost him everything for the season? And then on the other end of the scale, Josef Newgarden. The first man to win 5 races in an IndyCar season since Simon Pagenaud in 2016. THE Oval driver of the season. At times, unstoppable, unfathomable pace. But also, some errors and some bad luck have scattered his season all over the map. Iowa 2's broken car might have derailed his season without us realising it. Can he launch one final comeback? We break it all down, as well as the Rookie of the Year fight, on Motorsport101!

Phil and Josh return for a second episode of the GSP this week to cover F1, IndyCar and much more that we did not have time for in E131.  The guys discuss Jeremy Clements losing his playoff spot but keeping his win after a technical infraction was found at the R&D center.  At the same time, Carl Long gets screwed by NASCAR again. 23XI also announced that Bubba Wallace will be racing in the Owner's Championship playoffs after a number swap took place between their teams.  Also, accidents in the Gen7/Next Gen brought back to the forefront during Playoff Media Day with multiple drivers speaking out.  Formula 1 saw Max Verstappen come from 14th to win his home Grand Prix in Spa for the first time legitimately (kind of like the championship soon enough too).  Ferrari continues to eff up and screw Charles Leclerc over but the bigger news was the first lap incident between Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton which had El Plan making incendiary comments about his former teammate and seven-time World Champion.  Phil goes off on multiple aspects of this race, some drivers and more. Silly Season ramped up in F1 with Oscar Piastri's future being held up by a contract review board, Daniel Ricciardo stating he will not be back at McLaren and Mick Schumacher getting out of the Ferrari young driver program in lieu of losing his Haas seat.  Pierre Gasly has become the hot name to replace Alonso at Alpine to make an all French lineup but we will have to wait and see.  In the GSP Roundup, Phil covers IMSA GT at VIR, F2/F3 at Spa last week and Zandvoort this week, MotoGP/Moto2 at Misano and the NHRA US Nationals from Indianapolis.  The guys come back to make picks for the IndyCar Grand Prix of Portland with just two races to go and seven drivers still in the fight for the title along with the Dutch Grand Prix for F1 before Fantasy Football and actual football discussion closes the show.

Someone play the Jaws music, because Josef Newgarden is coming. We've only got three rounds left of the IndyCar Series for 2022, and Josef Newgarden took his 5th win of the season at Gateway's St Louis 500 to put himself just three points of the lead of the title race. But it very nearly didn't happen! We had rain play a huge role in terms of strategy, one that took the fuel saving Will Power out of the picture. But it also gave rise to the rampant charge of David Malukas! Lithusania's finest export went on a tear to nearly steal with dub, but still take a career high 2nd! We break it all down, as well as Newgarden's middle stint of the gods, as well as the future of ovals on the calendar, on Motorsport101!

Well, that was a shocker. The dust is only just settling on the biggest single silly season story in Motorsport. Out of nowhere, just hours of Chip Ganassi confirms they take the third year option on reigning series Champion Alex Palou's contract, Alex himself denies it on Twitter, declares he doesn't want to be there anymore for "personal reasons" and five minutes later, it's announced he's signed a deal with McLaren. But we don't know where yet. We try to make full sense of the situation, from Palou signing two deals at once. Has Chip Ganassi undersold the value of its reigning Champion by NOT renegotiating his deal after his shock sophomore title win? IS Zak Brown using his F1 team as leverage to coax the sport's younger drivers into moving over there? Pato O'Ward, Colton Herta and now Alex Palou, all 25 or younger, all actively making moves for an F1 seat that Daniel Ricciardo is still holding onto? Is this a good look for the series that is revelling in its own youth movement? It's a half hour plus discussion that included some fair disagreement about the future of IndyCar too. Well worth a listen! We talk IndyCar's return to Tornoto as well, as Scott Dixon made some more history with a huge win to get himself back in the title race. Not only that, it was his 52nd IndyCar win to tie him with the great Mario Andretti, and his 18th straight season with a victory. Dixon's winless streak can drink in the UK. It's older than Facebook becoming publicly accessible. Older than YouTube and Twitter. Older than Pedro Acosta. Older than the iPhone. And yet, here we are, Dixon at 41, back in another title fight. We break that down, as well as Felix Rosenqvist's first series podium with McLaren, despite shoving Alex Rossi into the wall. It's a fun time.# First time I think we've gone over an hour with a purely IndyCar episode, and it was great fun, listen in back on Motorsport101!

We were due a crazy one in IndyCar at some point with this season, and we just got one as IndyCar kicked off its Month of May with a rain-affected GMR Grand Prix of Indianapolis! It was Colton Herta that took full advantage of the changeable conditions, gambled on slicks first, leapt to the front from 14th and would then be virtually unstoppable at the front. Mind you, he got a gift in the hands of Scott McLaughlin and his pitcrew. They were so adamant the track would dry out that slicks would be quicker. Until he spun under caution with slicks on a wet track. Same for Pato O'Ward as the title contenders parted like Moses and the Red Sea. Alex Palou and Josef Newgarden also struggling to see the flag off the lead lap. We talk that and some of the driving standards we saw in Indy which... weren't good, chief! We also talk about the future of the series as talk persists that we may see a Netflix-style documentary series about IndyCar in the future. We talk about the potential pitfalls that the series could have in producing that and the audience it might try to reach. It's the first of three episodes over the weekend, so check back soon for MotoGP from Le Mans!

Skubal lasted six innings, limiting Baltimore to three hits and two walks. Trey Mancini’s homer off Rony Garcia in the ninth prevented the Orioles from being shut out in back-to-back games. Yankees 5, White Sox 1 – Cortes pitches 8 crisp innings as Yankees beat White Sox 5-1 Nestor Cortes pitched a career-high eight innings and the New York Yankees took advantage of Michael Kopech’s one wild stretch by beating the Chicago White Sox 5-1. New York managed just two hits: a second-inning single for Isiah Kiner-Falefa and a two-run homer by Joey Gallo in the ninth. But it was more than enough, thanks to the crafty Cortes. The 27-year-old left-hander allowed three hits, struck out seven and walked none. Adam Engel homered for Chicago, and Kopech pitched six innings of one-hit ball. He gave up four walks, and the Yankees took advantage. Cubs 3, Diamondbacks 2 – Schwindel’s go-ahead hit in 9th lifts Cubs over Arizona Frank Schwindel hit a tiebreaking single in the ninth inning and the Chicago Cubs beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-2. Patrick Wisdom and Rafael Ortega also homered for the Cubs, who have won four of six after a 3-14 stretch. In a game that featured the two top picks in last month’s draft, Howard made 9-of-18 from the field and 12-of-17 from the free-throw line with three steals. Indiana’s NaLyssa Smith, who was picked second, had 18 points before leaving the game with about 6 1/2 minutes left due to a right ankle injury. Kelsey Mitchell led the Fever with 27 points, her third consecutive game scoring at least 24. NASCAR – Kurt Busch wins for MJ Kurt Busch pinched his way past Kyle Larson for the lead with eight laps to go, then drove his gaudy Jordan Brand-styled car away from the reigning NASCAR Cup Series champion to win Sunday’s race at Kansas Speedway.  It was the second win for the up-and-coming 23XI Racing team owned by Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin, who followed the two leaders and Kyle Busch across in fourth place. Bubba Wallace won the team’s first race last year at Talladega. Golf – PGA – Lee rallies to win Nelson for 2nd straight year K.H. Lee has successfully defended his Byron Nelson title. Lee fired a 9-under 63 for a one-shot victory over local favorite Jordan Spieth (speeth) at birdie-besieged TPC Craig Ranch. Lee’s 240-yard shot on the par-5 12th hole stopped less than 5 feet from the pin, and the eagle put him in front for good.  Spieth shot a 67 to finish a stroke ahead of Hideki Matsuyama and Sebastián Muñoz (69), who held or shared the lead the first three rounds. Matsuyama shot a 62 and Xander Schauffele had a career-best 61 to finish in a tie for fifth. Golf – Champions – Stricker completes dominant performance Steve Stricker completed at a wire-to-wire victory in the Regions Tradition, closing with a 4-under 68 for a six-stroke victory and his fourth PGA Tour Champions major title.  Stricker’s second Tradition win at Greystone Golf & Country Club came in his third event since returning from a six-month absence for health reasons. Two straight birdies punctuated the dominant performance.  Paidrag Harrington finished second, birdieing the final two holes for a 68.  Steven Alker was in the group at 14 under after a 72. Golf – LPGA – Australian Lee hangs on to win Founders Cup LPGA scoring leader Minjee Lee made her only three birdies on the back nine and captured the Cognizant Founders Cup by two shots over Lexi Thompson.  The 25-year-old Australian took the lead for good with a birdie on the par-5 14th hole at Upper Montclair Country Club. She closed with a 2-under 70 for a 72-hole total of 19-under 269 in the event that honors the 13 founding members of the LPGA Tour.  Lee won her seventh career title and first since taking her first major at last year’s Evian Championship. CFL – 3 CFL teams cancel opening practices amid work stoppage Three Canadian Football league teams canceled their opening training-camp practices Sunday, a day after the league and players union broke off negotiations on a collective bargaining agreement. The Montreal Alouettes, Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Toronto Argonauts canceled practices, with more teams expected to follow suit. The previous CBA expired at midnight, with the CFL Players’ Association directing players from seven of the nine teams to participate in a work stoppage beginning at 12:01 a.m. EDT Sunday. Players with the Edmonton Elks and Calgary Stampeders reported to their camps because they will not be in a legal strike position under Alberta laws until later this month. The lone previous CFL strike came in 1974 and was resolved before the start of the season. IndyCar – IndyCar’s aeroscreen gets mixed reviews in 1st rain test IndyCar officials will spend the next few days collecting information and gathering advice about improving aeroscreen visibility for races held in the rain. Many drivers complained Saturday that they struggled to see other cars late in the IndyCar Grand Prix — even though each has flashing red lights. It was the most intense rainfall the series has competed in since 2018. Race runner-up Simon Pagenaud suggested adding a windshield wiper to the cars. Frye said series officials also will look into whether the use or non-use of tear-off covers by teams could have played a part Saturday. IndyCar returned for Round 4 of the 2022 Season, and we had to stand back for fireworks at Barber Motorsports Park in Alabama, as we had a prime slab of beef to deal with! First and foremost, the winner. Pato O'Ward, Mr Fast Hands, was superb in his final stint, passing Rinus on cold tyres round the outside of Charlotte's Web, and would hold off a fast charging Palou to take his first win of 2022. But this was overshadowed by the constant talk regarding his future. Is he staying? Is he staying but heading to F1? Is there a new deal coming? We break it all down with RJ, who was in the press conference room as it all broke down! We also talked about a heated clash between Romain Grosjean and Graham Rahal. Grosjean left the Charlotte's Web with 2 "Bumps" on Rahal on the exit that was nonconsequential. But Rahal lost his rag with the Frenchman, accusing him of doing it on purpose. He'd even go onto suggest there might be retaliation and had half the paddock agrreeing with him? Who was right? Why was there such beef? And did we really go OTT with it? We also talk more struggles for Colton Herta in the midfield as well as Josef Newgarden's 3-stopper going to crap as the cautions screwed the more aggressive runners. All that and more in a heated Motorsport101 episode!

They’re not likely to find out until Indianapolis 500 practice begins Tuesday. Still, it was part of the driver’s discussion as they prepared for qualifying for Saturday’s IndyCar Grand Prix. The slippery apron at the exit of the oval’s pit lane caused three cars to spin and led to two crashes in last month’s testing. But because the cars will race at slower speeds on the road course and run the opposite direction, the impact should be reduced this weekend. Horse Racing – Derby Winner to skip Preakness There will be no Triple Crown winner in thoroughbred racing this year.  Rich Strike will not run in the Preakness as owner Rich Dawson and trainer Eric Reed stick to their initial plan to rest the colt for five weeks. Rich Strike went off at 80-1 in winning the Kentucky Derby last weekend.  The plan now is to have Rich Strike ready to run in the Belmont Stakes on June 11. Rugby – US to host men’s and women’s Rugby World Cups for first time The United States will stage a Rugby World Cup for the first time after being voted as the host of the men’s tournament in 2031 and the women’s tournament two years later. Australia also is staging back-to-back tournaments in 2027 (men) and 2029 (women). World Rugby announced the host nations for all the World Cups from 2025-33 after a meeting of its council in Dublin. The sport is breaking new ground by taking its most prestigious tournament to North America. World Rugby regards it as an area of untapped potential in both a commercial and sporting sense. Tim and Dan discuss the results of the IndyCar Grand Prix of Alabama. Terrific result for Arrow McLaren and Pato O'Ward who was in the news early this season for reasons other than results. Ganassi Racing and Alex Palou continue to lurk in the background and now they lead the Season Championship. Not without controversy unfortunately. Was it good hard racing between Romain Grosjean and Graham Rahal. Your humble hosts this so. Though one of your hosts this is a bigger problem for only one of the drivers involved in this incident. A lot of news on F1's visit to Imola including who has the better package. Is it Ferrari or Red Bull? And how about K-Mag in the Haas? The best start for a Haas since joining F1. Finally wrapping up with our news and notes on Barber including the story lines we're following. But not before we talk extensively about Pato staying with Arrow McLaren; Rossi potentially jumping to Arrow McLaren and whether or not drivers can impart setup and engineering expertise at another team.

Tim and Dan break down the action at the Acura IndyCar Grand Prix of Long Beach. Penske continues their run with 3 of 3 wins on the season. A strong start to the season no doubt aided by a resurgent Chevy engine. Andretti needed a strong showing in Long Beach to reset the season. If Andretti needed a reset than that goes double for Alexander Rossi who has had success at Long Beach. Was it to be? What about Rahal Letterman Lanigan? And what of Jack Harvey getting his handle on this team and setups? All of this plus F1 and IMSA. Engage with us on social media!Consider becoming a Patreon supporter at: https://www.patreon.com/turnfourpodcast  Twitter: @turnfourpodcas1Instagram: Turn_Four_Podcastwww.turn4podcast.comYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0KqoM_k5JAOjdJs1LMD9cg

It's time to preview Long Beach. But before that Dan and Tim cover some news and notes for F1 and NASCAR. F1 continues to impress with the new regulations. Drivers have figured out a useful solution to DRS and how to manipulate the detection zones. Is this a problem? Nope. And who said manipulate? Mercedes will get it together but will Haas have enough resources to develop this season? NASCAR is going to LeMans? Yes! But can they do it right? Chad Knaus leading the effort with Hendricks and Chevy is putting the best foot forward for sure. Who are Dan and Tim's picks for Long Beach? Andretti and Rahal get it together? Our hosts are cautious. Not at all cautious about Penske continuing the strong start to this season. Engage with us on social media!Consider becoming a Patreon supporter at: https://www.patreon.com/turnfourpodcast  Twitter: @turnfourpodcas1Instagram: Turn_Four_Podcastwww.turn4podcast.comYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0KqoM_k5JAOjdJs1LMD9cg

IndyCar is back baby! And we got a fascinating return for the series in St Petersburg (FLORIDA), last weekend, as Scott McLaughlin, a man who was 60/1 going into the weekend, would win from pole, despite just about every usual IndyCar shenanigans being thrown at him. From backmarker traffic, to cautions and a charging Alex Palou right at the end, we talk at length about the development and “project” of Scotty Mac in IndyCar and ponder whether this is a sign of things to come with the amount of faith that Team Penske has put in him. We talk at length about the state of blue flags in the series after we saw dramatic blocking from Jimmie Johnson (Who totally wasn't helping Alex Palou out), and Devlin DeFrancesco right at the end that gave Palou a couple of extra chances to close right in at the end. And to be honest, we wanted an excuse to poke some fun at another classic Will Power media rant after the race. But did he have a point? Should IndyCar's “advisory” Blue Flag rule be changed? We talk some of the surprises of the first time seeing the 2022 cars driven in anger. From a return to form for Rinus Veekay, Dalton Kellett nearly eliminating the reigning Champion in Round 1 of Qualifying… and everything on our mans, King Kirkwood! All of that and more in our IndyCar St. Pete Report!

In this episode we discuss the final round of the 2021 season. Colton Herta pulls off another great drive to victory; A championship contender is punted after an ill advised pass attempt in a place nobody passes. This leaves one remaining championship chaser.
