Abstract: The human brain exhibits recurrent oscillatory activity in cortical networks of neuronal populations, which are thought to play a role in specialized cognitive functions. However, it is not known whether these oscillatory network states evolve over time in a structured or random matter. In this study, we introduce a new method for analyzing the long-term evolution of these states, and demonstrate that they follow a cyclical architecture when the brain is at rest, with typical cycle durations of 300-500 milliseconds. This cyclical organization structure positions the default mode network (DMN) and dorsal attention network (DAN) at opposite phases of the cycle, with the DMN preceded by higher frequency oscillations in sensorimotor networks and followed by lower frequency oscillations in frontotemporal networks respectively. The cyclical structure was robust in three large magnetoencephalography (MEG) resting state datasets, and persists in a visuo-motor task, where cycle phase predicts reaction time. Moreover, individual cyclical dynamics were predictive of demographics: older people deviate less from the cycle structure and show a general slowing of cycle rate, and cycle rate is strongly heritable. These findings suggest that the evolution of oscillatory network states in the human brain may be more organized than previously thought and provide potential biomarkers for health and disease. Book Vs. Movie: Rear WindowThe 1942 Short Story Vs. the 1954 Classic FilmThe Margos are swooning throughout this episode for one of the greatest movies of all time, adapted from a short story by a very interesting (and prolific) author. Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window is one of his finest works based on the short story; It Had to be Murder by Cornell Woolrich. Woolrich is considered one of his generation's best mystery/suspense writers, with dozens of titles making it to movie adaptations, including The Bride Wore Black, Night Had a Thousand Eyes, Mrs. Winterbourne, and Original Sun. He was so proficient as a writer of novels, screenplays, and short stories he had two noms de plumes--William Irish & George Hopley. A lonely man (he once dedicated a book to his hotel room), when he passed in 1968, he left his work to his alma mater Columbia University which eventually helped change the copyright laws. (See Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act, 1998.)The story's bones are the same as the film: an injured man stuck in his apartment becomes a “peeping tom,” spying on his neighbors and being grumpy to “Sam,” who is paid to help him. Our protagonist believes he has witnessed a murder across the street and is trying to get the police to take him seriously. The 1954 adaptation was shot on the Paramount Studio lot with a full-sized apartment building courtyard to mimic the real thing in Greenwich Village. James Stewart plays LB “Jeff” Jeffries, a photojournalist who is home recovering from a broken leg. Jeff must wear a cast for one more week before returning to his adventurous life. He passes the time by snooping on his neighbors across the courtyard. Grace Kelly plays his impossible beautiful girlfriend from the upper crust society who is trying to get a commitment from Jeff. (He negs her constantly, which makes ZERO sense!) Jeff wants to see Lisa be more adventurous when he thinks he witnesses a murder across the courtyard. Thelma Ritter plays his nurse Stella, and the trio becomes detectives trying to figure out a sweaty salesman played by Raymond Burr (pre-Perry Mason) who may have made his wife disappear--permanently. This film lost out to many major awards to On the Waterfront (it was a contender!) However, time has turned it into a masterclass of direction, sound, editing, acting, and writing. The Margos debate between the original short story and the classic film--which did we like more?In this ep the Margos discuss:The backstory of writer Cornell WoolrichThe work of Alfred HitchcockThe cast of the 1954 film: James Stewart (LB “Jeff” Jefferies,) Grace Kelly (Lisa Carol Tremont,) Wendell Corey (Tom Doyle,) Thelma Ritter (Stella,) Raymond Burr (Lars Thorwald,) Judith Evelyn (Miss Lonelyhearts,) Ross Bagdarasian (the songwriter,) Miss Torso (Georgine Darcy,) and Irene Winston as Mrs. Thorwald.Clips used:Stella talks with LB JeffriesRear Window Original 1954 trailerJames Stewart gets the binocularsLisa shows upLisa gets caught snooping.Raymond Burr tosses Jimmy Stewart out the windowMusic: Franz WaxmanBook Vs. Abstract: Current whole-brain models are generally tailored to the modelling of a particular modality of data (e.g., fMRI or MEG/EEG). Although different imaging modalities reflect different aspects of neural activity, we hypothesise that this activity arises from common network dynamics. Building on the universal principles of self-organising delay-coupled nonlinear systems, we aim to link distinct electromagnetic and metabolic features of brain activity to the dynamics on the macroscopic structural connectome. To jointly predict dynamical and functional connectivity features of distinct signal modalities, we consider two large-scale models generating local short-lived 40 Hz oscillations with various degrees of realism - namely Stuart Landau (SL) and Wilson and Cowan (WC) models. To this end, we measure features of functional connectivity and metastable oscillatory modes (MOMs) in fMRI and MEG signals - and compare them against simulated data. We show that both models can represent MEG functional connectivity (FC) and functional connectivity dynamics (FCD) to a comparable degree, by varying global coupling and mean conduction time delay. For both models, the omission of delays dramatically decreased the performance. For fMRI, the SL model performed worse for FCD, highlighting the importance of balanced dynamics for the emergence of spatiotemporal patterns of ultra-slow dynamics. Notably, optimal working points varied across modalities and no model was able to achieve a correlation with empirical FC higher than 0.45 across modalities for the same set of parameters. Nonetheless, both displayed the emergence of FC patterns beyond the anatomical framework. Finally, we show that both models can generate MOMs with empirical-like properties. Our results demonstrate the emergence of static and dynamic properties of neural activity at different timescales from networks of delay-coupled oscillators at 40 Hz. Given the higher dependence of simulated FC on the underlying structural connectivity, we suggest that mesoscale heterogeneities in neural circuitry may be critical for the emergence of parallel cross-modal functional networks and should be accounted for in future modelling endeavours. Abstract: Spectrum estimators that make use of averaging across time segments are ubiquitous across neuroscience. The core of this approach has not changed substantially since the 1960s, though many advances in the field of regression modelling and statistics have been made during this time. Here, we propose a new approach, the General Linear Model (GLM) Spectrum, which reframes time averaged spectral estimation as multiple regression. This brings several benefits, including the ability to do confound modelling, hierarchical modelling and significance testing via non-parametric statistics. We apply the approach to a first-level EEG resting-state dataset alternating between eyes open and eyes closed resting-state. The GLM-Spectrum can model both conditions, quantify their differences, and perform denoising through confound regression in a single step. This application is scaled up from a single channel to a whole-head recording and, finally, applied to quantify age differences across a large group-level dataset. We show that the GLM-Spectrum lends itself to rigorous modelling of within- and between-subject contrasts as well as their interactions, and that the use of model-projected spectra provides an intuitive visualisation. The GLM-Spectrum is a flexible framework for robust multi-level analysis of power spectra, with adaptive covariance and confound modelling. Copy rights belong to original authors. Fear in the Night is an American 1947 film noir crime film directed by Maxwell Shane, starring Paul Kelly and DeForest Kelley (in his film debut). It is based on the Cornell Woolrich story "And So to Death" (retitled '"Nightmare" in 1943). Woolrich is credited under pen-name William Irish.[3] The film was remade by the same director in 1956 with the title Nightmare this time starring Edward G. Then he asks, "How many of the brands can you name?" Outside of heritage brands like Pendleton or Woolrich, there is very little brand loyalty in the blanket business. Beyond that, there's little being done to bring performance textiles into the space. On this episode, fresh off of his Shark Tank pitch, Wylie shares what he learned from being on the show, how Rumpl continues to scale and differentiate, and why the pandemic took their branding down a few notches on Maslow's hierarchy.Visit the Lumi blog for links and images.

The book, 1947's Waltz Into Darkness, begins as the straight-forward story of a New Orleans lonelyheart targeted by a beautiful, conniving imposter but becomes something else entirely once he meets her again and finds that his obsession outweighs his need for vengeance. J., Woolrich, M. W. Abstract: Our brains at rest spontaneously replay recently acquired information, but how this process is orchestrated to avoid interference with ongoing cognition is an open question. We investigated whether replay coincided with spontaneous patterns of whole brain activity. We found, in two separate datasets, that replay sequences were packaged into transient bursts occurring selectively during activation of the default mode network (DMN) and parietal alpha network. These networks were characterized by widespread synchronized oscillations coupled to increases in ripple band power, mechanisms that coordinate information flow between disparate cortical areas. Our data show a tight correspondence between two widely studied phenomena of neural physiology and suggest the DMN may coordinate replay bursts in a manner that minimizes interference with ongoing cognition. W., De Tiege, X. Abstract: This magnetoencephalography study aimed at characterizing age-related changes in resting-state functional brain organization from mid-childhood to late adulthood. We investigated neuromagnetic brain activity at rest in 105 participants divided into three age groups: children (6-9 years), young adults (18-34 years) and healthy elders (53-78 years). The effects of age on static resting-state functional integration were assessed using band-limited power envelope correlation, whereas those on transient functional dynamics were disclosed using hidden Markov modeling of power envelope activity. Brain development from childhood to adulthood came with (i) a strengthening of functional integration within and between resting-state networks and (ii) an increased temporal stability of transient (100-300 ms lifetime) and recurrent states of network activation or deactivation mainly encompassing lateral or medial associative neocortical areas. Healthy aging was characterized by decreased static resting-state functional integration and dynamical stability within the visual network. These results based on electrophysiological measurements free of neurovascular biases suggest that functional brain integration mainly evolves during brain development, with limited changes in healthy aging. These novel electrophysiological insights into human brain functional architecture across the lifespan pave the way for future clinical studies investigating how brain disorders affect brain development or healthy aging. Abstract: Neurovascular coupling is a dynamic core mechanism supporting brain energy demand. Therefore, even spontaneous changes in neural activity not linked directly to goal-directed behavior are expected to evoke a vascular hemodynamic response (HDR). Here, we developed a novel procedure for estimating transient neural activity states based on source-localized electroencephalogram (EEG) in combination with HDR estimation based on simultaneously acquired functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). We demonstrate a readily apparent spatial correspondence between electrophysiological neural states and time-locked local HDR during rest, describing for the first time how features of neurovascular coupling may differ among unique large-scale brain networks. In the default mode network, the HDR pattern in our sample of older adults was associated with a structural surrogate marker of general cerebrovascular deterioration and predicted temporal disruption in electrophysiological activity linked to memory decline. These results demonstrate the potential of our integrated EEG/fMRI analysis for making inferences about neural and vascular processes in higher-level cognitive networks in healthy and at-risk populations. The rise of Brian Phillips, the President of Black Frame, to the top echelons of the fashion industry, is both well-known and impressive.  Instead of working his way up through the ranks of PR companies he founded Black Frame after having made fashion inroads at the cult magazine Visionaire straight out of college, worked at the now defunct production company Fatal Art Syndicate, and built up a close knit group of friends who just happened to work in the fashion industry. Friends that including Carol Lim and Humberto Leon, the duo behind Opening Ceremony (which Brian helped promote from the start) and who also are also now designing Kenzo – a deal that Brian was instrumental in brokering for the duo. But, perhaps the most mythic fashion war story from Brian’s early career years happened when, while he was in-between jobs, Hedi Slimane came knocking. Brain had worked with the iconic designer on a project a year earlier, the results of which apparently stuck in Slimane’s brain. When Slimane reached out to Brian again, he just happened to be the creative director of Dior Homme. After a meeting with Sidney Toledano, the then CEO of Christian Dior at that time, Brian had a deal with the brand. Thus, at the tender age of 24 Brian launched Black Frame. His first two clients.... Dior Homme and Visionaire. Since then he has nurtured the creative careers of designers and brands like Rodate, Delfina Delettrez, Helmut Lang, Eckhaus Latta, Woolrich, Dion Lee and Nike. Launched a sister company called Framework that focuses on “developing concepts for innovative brand experiences” and more recently became the creative director of the cult biannual publication Garage Magazine. I have known Brian for many years and what strikes you about him, besides the breadth and width of his cultural knowledge, is his no BS way of doing business. In an industry where schmoozing and sucking up has become almost an art form Brian doesn’t suffer fools or is looking for acolytes. He is all business, pretty much all the time. You better bring you’re A-game and offer up an interesting challenge if you want to get his attention. And Brian is a pretty interesting guy in his own right. I promise that if you can bear with the background hum of the air conditioning fan in this interview, that finally shuts down at about the 4-minute mark of our conversation, you will be rewarded with an insightful and informative discussion in which Brian really lays out his business philosophy and creative strategy. Honestly, I just asked my questions, sat back and let Brian run with it.

Nancy Panko has achieved amazing success with her book, “Guiding Missal,” an unusual story about a prayer book that is carried in the pocket of three generations of men as they navigate war. As she held the Military Missal in her hands, Nancy thought, “If only this little book could talk.” Her novel gives the prayer book a voice. Based on actual events, Nancy’s award winning novel is partially narrated by the small Catholic prayer book that George Panko received as he prepared to deploy to the European theater during World War II. A baker turned infantry man/forward scout, Panko left behind his wife, Gladys, and small son, Butch, for several years as he navigated France and Germany, helping the United States and its Allies win significant skirmishes, including the Battle of the Bulge. Throughout his enlistment, George carried the small book in his pocket and read from it, memorizing passages and whispering prayers. Once safely home, George packed the military missal into a trunk and together he and his wife rear their family. Fifteen years later, his son Butch is ready to graduate from high school and wants to enter the Air Force. George hands him the military missal with a request that he bring it back home, safe and sound. Butch’s experiences while stationed in Germany aren’t always as harrowing as George’s, thanks to George’s efforts as a U.S. Soldier. Still, Butch does live through the Cold War and high-alert situations where ballistic missile launches were potentially moments away, from the Berlin Crisis of 1961 to the Cuban Missile Crisis. Along the way, Butch travels to Italy and gains an audience with St John XXIII, who lifts the prayer book out of Butch's hand and blesses it. At the end of his enlistment, Butch comes home and returns the missal to George. Back into the trunk the book goes. Butch marries Nancy, the love of his life, and they have two children. The couple move to Clinton County, where George enjoys a long career with Woolrich. Nancy began taking general education classes at Lock Haven University, transferring to Lycoming College to begin her nursing education at Williamsport Hospital. She graduated and began her career at Jersey Shore Hospital as a pediatric nurse for one year before working for Geisinger Medical Group in Lock Haven also in pediatrics. She was employed at Glennon Health Services of Lock Haven University for thirteen years before her retirement. Two decades pass and their daughter, Margie, meets and marries T.O., a U.S. Soldier deploying to Africa to combat Al Qaeda in Mogadishu, Somalia. Once again, the military missal’s amazing powers of protection are required. Butch searches for the missal in his late father’s belongings and loans it to his new son-in-law, T.O., with the same request his own father had: Come home safe and return the book. T.O. returns the book, convinced of its power after a U.S. Blackhawk helicopter goes down in 1993, and the resultant battle between forces of the United States and Somali militia fighters. “Guiding Missal” is a heartfelt, homespun tale that has moved people to leave more than two dozen five-star reviews on Amazon.  Nancy’s simple, sweet story has touched so many people it’s become a successful book in both print and digital platforms. Published by Torchflame Books, a hybrid publisher, “Guiding Missal” received the 2017 Silver Award-Medal for Historical Fiction from the Military Writers’ Society of America. Nancy is a ten-time contributor to “Chicken Soup for the Soul” and “Guideposts” magazines. She is a member of the Cary Senior Writing Circle, The Light of Carolina Christian Writers’ Group, and The Military Writers’ Society of America. She and her husband moved from Lock Haven, Pennsylvania to North Carolina in 2009. They have two children and four grandchildren. They love being in, on, or near the water with their family.

“Nothing is ever, ever going to challenge a good, solid, legible, readable, scalable, beautiful, crafted mark. It’s got the right DNA.” As one of the leading designers working today, Aaron Draplin has a thing or two to say about brands. This past week, Draplin was in Iowa City on his fall tour “Tall Tales from a Large Man,” which he presented at the University of Iowa. I was fortunate enough to be able to chat with him after his workshop and before his evening lecture about identity and the new dynamics at play today.  About Aaron Draplin Hailing from the mighty Pacific Northwest (but a Midwesterner at heart), Aaron Draplin is one of the most unique and outspoken designers working today. The Draplin Design Co. proudly rolls up its sleeves on print, identity, web development (or not web — if you listen to the first thing out of his mouth during the interview), illustration and Gocco muscle projects. They make stuff for Field Notes, Esquire, Nike, Wired, Timberline, Ford Motor Company, Woolrich and even the Obama Administration, among many others. The DDC motto is simple: “Work hard. Do good work. For good people.” As We Wrap … Before we go, I want to flip the microphone around to our community … This week I have to thank Bradley Dicharry at the University of Iowa’s School of Art and Art History for making this week’s interview possible. W., De Tiege, X., Wens, V. Abstract: Human brain activity is not merely responsive to environmental context but includes intrinsic dynamics, as suggested by the discovery of functionally meaningful neural networks at rest, i.e., even without explicit engagement of the corresponding function. Yet, the neurophysiological coupling mechanisms distinguishing intrinsic (i.e., task-invariant) from extrinsic (i.e., task-dependent) brain networks remain indeterminate. Here, we investigated functional brain integration using magnetoencephalography throughout rest and various tasks recruiting different functional systems and modulating perceptual/cognitive loads. We demonstrated that two distinct modes of neural communication continually operate in parallel: extrinsic coupling supported by phase synchronization and intrinsic integration encoded in amplitude correlation. Intrinsic integration also contributes to phase synchronization, especially over short (second-long) timescales, through modulatory effects of amplitude correlation. Our study establishes the foundations of a novel conceptual framework for human brain function that fundamentally relies on electrophysiological features of functional integration. This framework blurs the boundary between resting-state and task-related neuroimaging. Copy rights belong to original authors. Visit the link for more info
