It was a Thing on TV: An Anthology on Forgotten Television

None of us take responsibility for selecting this show and putting it on our schedule, which must say how bad this show is.  Two ex-cons produce a TV show about protecting people from scams, which makes sense; who'd know more about the scamming business than two reformed ex-cons?  This show's shelf life was very short and for obvious reasons.  At least a young Marg Helgenberger is in this.

"Species" is a science fiction horror film released in 1995. The film was directed by Roger Donaldson and produced by Frank Mancuso Jr. The concept for the movie was originally conceived by Dennis Feldman, who also wrote the screenplay. The production was a collaborative effort between MGM and the American Film Marketing Association (AFMA). The story revolves around the discovery of an extraterrestrial DNA sequence received from outer space. A group of scientists, led by Xavier Fitch (played by Ben Kingsley), use this alien DNA to create a genetically engineered human-alien hybrid, named Sil (portrayed by Natasha Henstridge). Sil grows rapidly and exhibits dangerous predatory behaviors as she escapes from the research facility and sets out to procreate and fulfill her deadly instinct to survive. The casting process was crucial to bring the story's characters to life, and "Species" features a talented ensemble cast, including Michael Madsen, Alfred Molina, Forest Whitaker, Marg Helgenberger, and Michelle Williams. "Species" was made with a production budget of around $35 million, and it aimed to blend elements of science fiction, horror, and thriller genres. The film's special effects, especially in creating Sil's alien-human transformation, were considered groundbreaking for its time. Upon its release in 1995, "Species" garnered significant attention for its mix of horror and sci-fi elements, becoming a commercial success with a worldwide box office gross of over $113 million. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, the film found a dedicated fan base and spawned several sequels, making it a notable entry in the sci-fi horror genre of the 1990s. They use this genetic material to create a human-alien hybrid named Sil (Natasha Henstridge). As Sil rapidly matures, it becomes evident that she possesses dangerous predatory instincts, leading her to escape from the research facility in a bid for freedom. With a primal drive to reproduce, Sil embarks on a deadly spree, and a team of experts, including a government assassin (Michael Madsen), a biologist (Marg Helgenberger), and an empath (Forest Whitaker), is assembled to track her down before she fulfills her sinister mission. This nerve-wracking and suspenseful tale of genetic experimentation gone wrong keeps audiences on the edge of their seats with stunning special effects and an engaging mix of science fiction and horror elements. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/support

They're called BSA's, Ed. While 2000's "Erin Brockovich" is best known as Julia Roberts' Oscar at long last, it also features a deservedly nominated Albert Finney as her unlikely sidekick/boss, Ed Masry, and Marg Helgenberger doing a lot of the movie's emotional lifting as featured Hinkley resident and bundt cake maker Donna Jensen. Plus Erin's kids are just great, even the baby! We have a lot to say about a fantasy barbecue with Aaron Eckhardt, similarities to Susannah Grant's other 2000 script "28 Days," the appearance of Broadway ladies Cherry Jones and Veanne Cox, some strong disagreements on old lady candy, our irrational resistance to both "Almost Famous" and "Pollock," potential casting if this movie were made in the 70's, and why this may have been a deserved win for Roberts after all. There are some crazy, gory, fun effects with part 2, and while some of the premise is certainly cringey, it's a great standup sequel that deserves more love. Finally, parts 3 and 4 are explored in all their crazy mess and splendor. The Number One Movie in America

Oh wow, it's Steven Seagal time. Are we prepared? Is anyone? Somewhat late in the mysterious, fabled Era of Seagal, the notorious kick-man took a trip down to Kentucky to try and find some jugs of green ooze, while romancing Marg Helgenberger and fixing Harry Dean Stanton's porch. Somehow, it's LESS straightforward than that! This week's recommendations: Kahmeela finds herself delighted by KING OF STATEN ISLAND. Sean shrugs at new releases and goes way back for the 1942 screwball comedy I MARRIED A WITCH. And Robin, of all people, is big into SAINT MAUD.

"Chaos Theory" is the second episode of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation's second season. The show stars William Petersen as CSI's fearless leader, Gil Grissom, with Marg Helgenberger, Gary Dourdan, George Eads, Jorja Fox, and Paul Guilfoyle rounding out the rest of the investigatory ensemble. In this episode, the CSI squad hits the philosophy textbooks as part of the search for a missing college student. Paige Rycoff vanished from her dorm room just minutes before she was set to drop out and head home. And campus is populated with no shortage of sketchy characters who may have sought to do her harm. CSI rookies Áine and Kevin shine some ultraviolet light on how the episode balances fun procedural cheesiness with sophisticated and satisfying storytelling choices. And stick around for the twist! A dead end might be the worst place to be on a missing persons case, but the conclusion to this episode is as lively and memorable as anything. Horror Octorbor keeps on chugging, as we keep exploring the seven deadly sins with our entry for Lust, Species! This 1995 sexy-alien chiller (courtesy of Dante's Peak and The November Man's Roger Donaldson) features Ghosts of Mars' Natasha Henstridge as Sil, a sultry alien-human hybrid from outer space who escapes Ben Kingsley's government facility to seek out a mate for her alien babies. In hot pursuit is a rag-tag team of scientists (Marg Helgenberger, Alfred Molina), an 'empath' (Forest Whitaker) and a smarmy guy with a gun (Michael Madsen), all with personalities as loud as their clothing. Species is a hell of a 90s time capsule, from the bulky fashions to the ridiculous character names (Madsen's character is literally called Press Lennox), and the Showtime-ready alien sexuality that was the film's clear draw. The creature design is the most direct translation of Alien designer H.R. Giger's bonkers techno-sexual style, rendered with the expected dated CG and prosthetic effects. It's Andromeda Strain meets Emmanuelle, and we're here for every ridiculous minute. Take a listen to our thoughts, and check out our drinking game for the film below! Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Here's a film that seems to have been a bit forgotten. Co-host Eric wonders why. Mr. Brooks is the name of the movie and its cast is quite impressive: Kevin Costner, Demi Moore, William Hurt, Dane Cook, Danielle Panabaker, and Marg Helgenberger. The film was released in 2007 and was a modest success, costing $20M USD to make and earning nationally $28M USD (and an additional $20M USD internationally). The story is about a wealthy family man who happens to be a serial killer named the Thumbprint Killer. Unlike a number of other such thrillers, the murderer knows that he happens to be a sociopath and therefore mentally ill. As the story moves along with its story which includes blackmail, murder, and a police procedural, the screenplay continues to follow Mr. Brooks' own personal demons and the family that doesn't know who he really is. Bruce Evans, screenwriter of Stand By Me, the fantastic adaption of the Stephen King novella, The Body, directs what was at one time considered to be a potential trilogy of films before its unfortunate death at the box office. Co-host Eric of Dark Discussions chooses Mr. Brooks for your hosts to analyze and dissect; one of the most interesting serial killer movies possibly ever made.
