G., Olausson, H., McIntyre, S., Gerling, G. J. Abstract: Interpersonal touch is an important part of our social and emotional interactions. How these physical, skin-to-skin touch expressions are processed in the peripheral nervous system is not well understood. From single-unit microneurography recordings in humans, we evaluated the capacity of six subtypes of cutaneous afferents to differentiate perceptually distinct social touch expressions. By leveraging conventional statistical analyses and classification analyses using convolutional neural networks and support vector machines, we found that single units of multiple A{beta} subtypes, especially slowly adapting type II (SA-II) and fast adapting hair follicle afferents (HFA), can reliably differentiate the skin contact of those expressions at accuracies similar to those perceptually. Rapidly adapting field (Field) afferents exhibit lower accuracies, whereas C-tactile (CT), fast adapting Pacinian corpuscles (FA-II), and muscle spindle (MS) afferents can barely differentiate the expressions, despite responding to the stimuli. We then identified the most informative firing patterns of SA-II and HFA afferents' spike trains, which indicate that an average duration of 3-4 s of firing provides sufficient discriminative information. Those two subtypes also exhibit robust tolerance to shifts in spike-timing of up to 10 ms. A greater shift in spike-timing, however, drastically compromises an afferent's discrimination capacity, and can change a firing pattern's envelope to resemble that of another expression. Altogether, the findings indicate that SA-II and HFA afferents differentiate the skin contact of social touch at time scales relevant for such interactions, which is 1-2 orders of magnitude longer than those relevant for discriminating non-social touch inputs. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.07.17.548686v1?rss=1 Authors: Li, B., Gerling, G. J. Abstract: Individual differences in tactile acuity have been correlated with age, gender, and finger size, while the role of the skin's stiffness has been underexplored. Using an approach to image the 3-D deformation of the skin surface while in contact with transparent elastic objects, we evaluate a cohort of 40 young participants, who present a diverse range of finger size, skin stiffness, and fingerprint ridge breadth. The results indicate that skin stiffness generally correlates with finger size, although individuals with relatively softer skin can better discriminate compliant objects. Analysis of contact at the skin surface reveals that softer skin generates more prominent patterns of deformation, in particular greater rates of change in contact area, which correlate with higher rates of perceptual discrimination, regardless of finger size. Moreover, upon applying hyaluronic acid to soften individuals' skin, we observe immediate, marked and systematic changes in skin deformation and consequent improvements in perceptual acuity. Together, the combination of 3-D imaging of the skin surface, biomechanics measurements, multivariate regression and clustering, and psychophysical experiments show that subtle distinctions in skin stiffness modulate the mechanical signaling of touch and shape individual differences in perceptual acuity. Burke Reid is a Canadian-Australian producer, who began his career as part of the seminal Australian alt-rock trio Gerling. After ten years in the band, and 4 critically and commercially successful albums, he left to pursue a career solely in production. His very first full length role, The Mess Hall's Devil's Elbow won the Australia Music Prize and set him off on a fascinating and varied career as one of alternative music's most interesting and in demand producers. Work with Courtney Barnett - whose album “Sometimes I sit and think, sometimes I just sit” also nabbed an AMP Award, DZ Deathrays, Flyte, Julia Jacklin and Sports Team have followed. He relocated to the UK just as the world went into lockdown back in 2020, but we were lucky to be able to speak with him in person at my studio, Hackney Road, and hear the story about how he went from cult rock star musician with Gerling, to cult rock music producer. The Process of Production is presented by Lawrence Diamond and Bob Matthews. Lawrence cut his teeth playing and writing in Indie bands before finding international success and touring the world with his band CITIZENS! During that time he worked with a host of revered producers including Liam Howe, Mark Ralph and Alex Kapranos. Since the band ended in 2016 he's been using that experience to help other artists develop their careers as a writer and producer while continuing to release his own music under various different guises. Bob learned his trade as the producer and multi-instrumentalist in Electronic Pop duo Alpines, whose career spans 3 albums, releases on major and indie record labels, shows with Florence + The Machine, The xx, Emeli Sandé, and a top 20 hit 'Tidal Wave' in collaboration with Sub Focus. In recent years he has turned his focus to producing other acts and has a studio in Chiswick in West London.

Box 508 Georgetown, KY 40324 Kenworth, one of my favorite truck manufacturers, like so many other truck manufacturers came into being by someone buying or merging into another company. Kenworth was no exception. Gerlinger Motors of Portland, Oregon was a car and truck dealership owned by two brothers George T. Gerlinger and Louis Gerlinger Jr. The dealership was not enough for the Gerlinger brothers so in 1914 the brothers expanded into vehicle manufacturing. The Gerlinger brothers began marketing a truck they named the “Gersix”. Their truck was powered by a inline six-cylinder engine. One of the first six-cylinder engines put in a truck. The truck was named the Gersix after the engine. The Gersix truck was framed in structural steel. The heavy-duty construction of the Gersix found itself in demand by loggers through the Northwest. By 1916, Gerlinger Motors had outgrown its plant in Oregon. The plant was relocated to Tacoma, Washington. The Gerling brothers leased a building from Edgar K. Worthington. In 1917, Gerlinger Motors fell on hard times and filed for bankruptcy At that time Gerlinger was placed for sale. E.K. Worthington saw a good deal, so he acquired the company with his business partner Captain Frederick Kent. They renamed the company the Gersix Motor Company. In 1919 Harry Kent, his son, replaced Captain Kent, as a partner in the company on Sr. Kents retirement. By 1922, Gersix Motor Company produced 53 trucks in its final year at its factory on Fairview Avenue at Valley Street. By 1923, Gersix Motor Company had created a strong demand for the Gersix model line of trucks. With Gersix Motor Company success Gersix Motors was reincorporated as the Kenworth Motor Truck Company, thus, combining the names of partners Kent and Worthington. The factory was once again relocated within Seattle to 506 Mercer Street and later to 1263 Mercer Street. Wasn't that a colorful history, of how Kenworth came to be? Of course, that's not the complete story. There are many more years of Kenworth history. But for now this will do. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/logan-skeele/message

This podcast offers a close up of the beginnings of type 1 diabetes and how one researcher is identifying pathways toward prevention. Type 1 diabetes, also known as insulin-dependent or juvenile onset diabetes, is not associated with causes like obesity as is type 2; rather, it's considered an autoimmune disease. Listen and learn What research tells us about type 1 diabetes pathogenesis, which centers on an immune-generated destruction of insulin-producing beta cells (β-cells) in the pancreas, How the trigger for the immune system attack is unknown and what Dr. Gerling's research has identified thus far, and How his lab's findings may lead to preventative therapies, whether through specific vaccines or methods for reducing cell stress to inhibit disease progression. Ivan C. Gerling is a professor of medicine in endocrinology at The University of Tennessee Health Science Center. He explains that scientists have little understanding for why the immune system attacks the pancreas's beta cells, and thereby insulin production, which is the cause of type 1 diabetes. Because there's no safe way to biopsy a pancreas for living-tissue studies, it's been very difficult to get a close look at the mechanisms causing autoimmune diabetes symptoms. Furthermore, because there's no way for beta cell regeneration to naturally occur, preventing their destruction is key to preventing type 1 diabetes. However, a new organ-donation program has made a difference in allowing scientist like Dr. Gerling to study the pancreas tissue of type 1 diabetics. His lab is researching whether certain viruses stress beta cells' function and trigger their eventual destruction. By comparing the beta cells and islets of Langerhans in type 1 diabetics with those who didn't suffer from the disease, they are finding some answers. Though they still have more work to do, they have found indications of stress and footprints of viral infections in the type 1 tissues. He adds that they're identifying the stress pathways that seem to be activated when these beta cells start going downhill. This will help them identify drugs to help the stressed cells, and, if it turns that the first causes are the viral infections, they hope to identify these viruses specifically and create vaccines for them. Listen in to learn more about these steps forward in medical research. Available on Apple Podcasts: apple.co/2Os0myK

Abstract: Our sense of touch helps us encounter the richness of our natural world. Across a myriad of contexts and repetitions, we have learned to deploy certain exploratory movements in order to elicit perceptual cues that are optimal and efficient. Such cues help us assess an object's roughness, or stickiness, or as in this case, its softness. Leveraging empirical experiments combined with computational modeling of skin deformation, we develop a perceptual illusion for softness, or compliance, where small-compliant and large-stiff spheres are indiscriminable. The elasticity-curvature illusion, however, becomes readily discriminable when explored volitionally. This tactile illusion is unique because it naturally decouples proprioceptive cues from those involving identical, cutaneous contact attributes. Furthermore, the illusion sheds light into exactly how we explore soft objects, i.e., by volitionally controlling force, to optimally elicit and integrate proprioceptive cues amidst illusory cutaneous contact. Zwei wahnsinnig sympatische Leute. Wir reden über Podcasts, Journalismus und die Bremer Politik. Wigbert Gerling ist faszniert von Lemwerder.

WASHINGTON POST: "President’s intelligence briefing book repeatedly cited virus threat" 3. WASHINGTON POST: "The U.S. plans to give $500 billion to large companies. It won’t require them to preserve jobs or limit executive pay." 4. AXIOS: "Mnuchin says SBA will do "full review" of PPP loans over $2 million" 5. AXIOS: "Coronavirus is tied to climate and biodiversity crises" 6. CNN: "Arizona GOP chair encourages anti-stay-at-home protesters to dress like health care workers" 7. THE DAILY BEAST: "Pence Flouts Mask Policy While Visiting Staff, Patient at Mayo Clinic" She's then joined by Toddy Duffy, Co-Founder of the Law-Firm DuffyAmedeo LLP. Todd attended law school at St. John’s University School of Law and obtained his law degree in two and a half years. After law school, he clerked for Chief Judge Stephen D. Gerling of the Northern District of New York Bankruptcy Court. After his clerkship, Todd was associated with several large Manhattan firms and participated in many of the largest and most complex bankruptcy cases in the last twenty years. Todd is also a past Chair of the Bankruptcy Committee of the New York County Lawyers’ Association. Leslie and Todd discuss the "flood of business bankruptcies" being "likely in coming months," as reported by the Associated Press. Todd explains why, especially during a disaster like the COVID-19 pandemic, bankruptcy does not signify that a business is a failure. Rather, it is a tool that a business can use to level the playing field amid the economic fallout from a disaster that they had no hand in making. Todd's website is DuffyAmedeo.com and his Twitter handle is @ToddEduffy.

2/5/2019 Poetic Reflections by Gerling-Mut Duo Poetic Reflections was performed by Dr. Ingrid Gerling (violin/voice) and Dr. Andreea Mut (piano). Each piece in the program was based on meditation, sacred text, or religiously inspired poetry, written by composers of different religious backgrounds and nationalities. Poetic Reflections aimed to share an experience of universal spirituality that can be deeply felt through music. One of Houston's most notable composers, Paul English, debuted a piece composed for Gerling-Mut Duo, centering around the mission of the Rothko Chapel. Gerling-Mut Duo were joined by guest musicians Gabriel Santiago, guitar, and Cassio Duarte, percussion. About Gerling-Mut Duo: Known for their dynamic performances and creative programming, Dr. Ingrid Gerling and Dr. Andreea Muţ are re-energizing the concept of the violin and piano duo. They began their musical collaboration in 2012, while pursuing their Doctorate of Musical Arts degrees at the University of Houston. Upon graduating in 2015, they officially formed the Gerling-Mut Duo with the mission to bring new life to this traditional genre. They perform a wide range of repertoire, and share a strong commitment to performing contemporary music. Since its formation, the Gerling-Mut Duo has given multiple recitals at the University of St. Thomas and performs weekly for the Harmony in the Air series at the Hobby Airport. Their recent performances at San Jacinto College and at the Memorial Classical Music series were received with great enthusiasm, and they have since been invited to give recitals at St. Stephen’s United Methodist Church and Grace United Methodist Church. The Gerling-Mut Duo was also featured at Miller Outdoor Theatre and the Rice University Boniuk Institute for Religious Tolerance as part of the Arts of Tolerance program. Future plans include another series of recitals at University of St. Thomas and other venues in Houston, outreach performances throughout Houston, and a recital tour in Brazil. This program was presented in celebration of World Interfaith Harmony Week | February 1 – 7, 2019 The World Interfaith Harmony Week was first proposed at the UN General Assembly on September 23, 2010 by H.M. King Abdullah II of Jordan. Just under a month later, on October 20, 2010, it was unanimously adopted by the UN. The World Interfaith Harmony Week extends the two common religious commandments: Love of the Good, and Love of the Neighbor, and includes all people of goodwill, those of faith and those with no faith. The week provides a platform when all interfaith groups and other groups of goodwill can show the world what a powerful movement they are. It is hoped that this initiative will provide a focal point from which all people of goodwill can recognize that the common values they hold far outweigh the differences they have, and thus provide a strong dosage of peace and harmony to their communities.

Seja and Darren chat about the development of his folk noir duo Jep and Dep, home recording at crazy hours and his DIY record label. Stevie Nicks the dog gets a few mentions. Constipated? Take relief: it's probably not because your sphincter is too tight. In this month's episode of SHHH, The Puru sits down with Dr. Daniel Gerling, Assistant Professor at Augustana University and perhaps the foremost expert on poop history in the United States (who else could write the dissertation, "American Wasteland: A Social and Cultural History of Excrement, 1860-1920"?). Hear Danny explain why American occupiers collected over 120,000 jars of Filipino feces, how the demodex (eyelash mite) may be the only creature that doesn't poop, and why sphincter expanders were recommended as a cure for constipation in the early 1900s. Put down that fork--this is one fascinating hour you might not want to eat through. Also mentioned in this conversation: Thomas Jefferson, Dominique LaPorte, History of Shit, Tlazolteotl, Austin TX, John G. Bourke, Scatologic Rites of All Nations, Sigmund Freud, colonialism, Henry Moule, earth closet, flush toilet, Cuban occupation, Filipino occupation, Inner Hygiene, James C. He's also the producer behind many great records, including the recipient of 98,000 awards this year, Courtney Barnett's "Sometimes I Sit and Think, Sometimes I Just Think". We talk about how Sonic Youth turned him on as a 12 year old, meeting the band as a pimply teenager at an Aussie festival, how their album 'Dirty' balances experimentation and accessibility and the process of making Courtney's world-conquering album. This lecture is presented in partnership with the PuSh Festival; January 18 - February 6, 2011. Volker Gerling’s flip-book cinema has quietly become legendary. Having walked some 3000 kilometres through Germany on foot, Gerling took photographs of people he met during his wanderings, creating portraits in the form of photographic flip-books. He met an old man who wanted to improve the world and almost starved in the process, a homeless woman who wished for nothing more than to see her children once again and a young woman who decided to change her life while on holiday. Gerling describes great, small, serious and quirky accidental encounters and, for a moment, brings his protagonists to life on the screen. They appear so life-like in fact, that the observer feels as if they have known the subject for years. On stage, Gerling flips through the photos underneath a video camera lens and projects the images onto a screen – recounting the stories of those who let themselves be photographed. These magical studies inspire gentle but profound reflection upon the transitory nature of the moment and the significance of interpersonal encounters. The piece, “Images move, when carried around/ Portraits in Motion”, has attracted a cult-following in Berlin and has been invited to participate at numerous international theatre festivals throughout Europe.
Chris from Sydney electronic band joined us for a chat before his bands appearances on the Triple Treat tour. We talk about influences, learning production and Gerling.
