Does Calorie Restriction Even Work? What About the Carnivore Diet AND Fruit? Today we are excited to have Paul Saladino join us for a masterclass on food and diets. Dr. Saladino dives into the evolution of keto and carnivore diets, cutting through trends to focus on lasting health impacts. Dr. Saladino, widely recognized as CarnivoreMD, shares how his own diet shifted to include fruit and honey alongside animal-based nutrition, and why metabolic flexibility—not rigid rules—leads to better outcomes. Together, he and Dave challenge assumptions about long-term ketosis, examine its potential downsides, and explore how to optimize diets for energy, gut health, and longevity. Mindful Weight Loss with Michelle Tubman, MD

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 24, 2024 38:49

Welcome back, beautiful friends, to the podcast. Last week we talked about how it's not your fault, your body is not broken, and you are not broken. Today is a bit related to that because I want to talk about food control. That constant food chatter in our minds, a constant obsession about food, feeling like we have to control food but also feeling out of control, that's what I want to talk about because when I do, I often get the response of “I don't actually food restrict, I haven't been on a diet in forever and this doesn't apply to me”. But here's the thing: I think because so many of us are used to the messages we receive day in and day out from diet culture, we're just used to a baseline of eating much less than we used to. We don't actually think we're restricting but we're constantly feeding ourselves fewer calories than what our bodies need to function well. And that's what I am going to address here today.    It's important to talk about how many of us feel like we're no longer dieting but we have this baseline of not eating enough and we're still caught in a cycle of food obsession, guilt, and even bingeing. Why is that happening if we're not restricting? Let's talk about how calorie restriction and nutrient deprivation affect our bodies and brains and how they sneak into our lives when we're not looking. It's a subtle restriction, like choosing a smaller portion than we need or not eating when we're hungry between meals. I'm going to talk all about things like energy conservation mode and how our hypothalamus monitors energy intake and expenditure, macronutrients and micronutrients, the body's built-in mechanism called homeostasis, the subtle signs we're still restricting without knowing it, and what to do about it. It's okay if this is you. You're not broken. We've all been there and being aware is the first step towards healing. So join me on this exploration of exactly how food restriction is hiding in plain sight keeping us from a fully healthy relationship with food, and how to move forward. __About Dr. Michelle Tubman:Dr. Michelle Tubman is certified by the American Board of Obesity Medicine, which means she understands exactly what's happening in your body when you diet. Eat less. Move more. Count your calories. Or points. Or macros. Eat at much protein and fat as you want but avoid carbs and sugar. Eat anything you want as long as it fits your macros. Just follow this simple meal plan. Only eat within a 8 hour window. Stop eating after 7. How many of these have you tried to lose weight? How is it working for you? You might have heard someone argue that you shouldn't cut carloies, you should just avoid carbs instead. Or that instead of restricting calories, just focus on the TIME you eat. That weight loss has nothing to do with calories, just hormones. Someone else says that you should cut meat and all animal products. And that you NEED breakfast and that fasting will tank your hormones. And perhaps BOTH can be right for somebody, but the real question is... Why are you going to food when you're not hungry? Learning and focusing on nutrition is both necessary to lose weight AND a distraction from working through your emotional eating, all or nothing thinking, binge eating, perfectionism, people pleasing and feelings of unworthiness. Vic Basmadjian is an advocate of low carbohydrate and ketogenic diets after recovering his own poor health. At 55, he was obese, weighing in at almost 300 lbs., and had high blood pressure and sleep apnea. Over the past few decades, Vic had repeatedly attempted to lose weight through calorie restriction, and although he had often lost significant amounts, he had never been able to sustain the weight loss. It finally occurred to him that cutting out refined carbs- such as rice, potato, and pasta- seemed to help with his weight loss efforts. Vic used the ketogenic diet to sustainably lose one hundred pounds, while improving his health and quality of life, and he has now turned much of his attention to helping others. Mindful Weight Loss with Michelle Tubman, MD

I've been referencing this study for awhile now and it keeps coming up in conversations with clients and colleagues. So I want to devote this episode to discussing the study, called The Minnesota Starvation Study. It was conducted by Ancel Keys in 1944 to 1945, during World War II, on 36 healthy male volunteers. Ancel Keys' goal was to study the physical and psychological effects of what he termed “semi-starvation” because of the soldiers and civilians across Europe who were chronically underfed as a result of the war. The Minnesota Starvation Study is, to my knowledge, the only study of its kind which is partially why it is constantly talked about in weight loss and obesity medicine circles. And the results of the study are profound and important to discuss in relation to self-restriction of calories through dieting. Ancel Keys ensured the 36 male volunteers met specific criteria in terms of their health and baseline eating habits before joining the study. During the study, which took place over a full year, the men lived in a controlled environment and adhered to very strict guidelines regarding calorie intake, activity, and testing. For the first 12 weeks they were in a control period. Then they entered the 6 month semi-starvation period which meant they each only ingested half the amount of their daily calories from before. Finally, they entered a 12 week rehab period. The effects of the semi-starvation on the men included cognitive and emotional changes as well as medical and physical changes and some of the symptoms they experienced echo those suffered by people with disordered eating. Keep in mind that the men's overall caloric intake was decreased to 1570 calories per day, which is still more than most diets recommend now. The enormity of effects on their minds and bodies, some of which lasted for years, brings up very real harm questions about the cost of the diets we willingly put our bodies through. I encourage you to join me in this episode and to give the resources a read.About Dr. Michelle TubmanDr. Michelle Tubman is a physician and health coach. She helps women ditch dieting and thrive at any size. For the longest time she believed that weight loss was the answer to all her problems. But decades of yo-yo dieting and restriction left her miserable, unhealthy, and exhausted. Now she teaches women how harmful dieting can be and shows them the way to true health and wellness. As a physician specializing in both emergency and obesity medicine, with additional training in nutrition, eating psychology, and coaching, Michelle can tell you with certainty that dieting is dangerous. Studies associate compromised health more with yo-yo dieting than higher body weight. Yet, everywhere you turn, shrinking your body is hailed as the solution. Women don't need to change. Attitudes do. So let's stop self-shaming, speak out against sizeism, and fiercely champion unconditional self-celebration!—Resources mentioned in this episode:Ancel Keys“The Minnesota Semi-Starvation Experiment: What It Teaches Us About Eating Disorders” by Samantha DeCaro, PsyD“The Starvation Experiment” by Chantal Gil, PsyD—Learn more about Dr. Michelle Tubman and Wayza Health:Website: www.wayzahealth.comFollow me on Facebook and Instagram
