https://charlaineharris.com/ Charlaine Harris was born in Tunica, Mississippi, and raised in the Mississippi River Delta area in the middle of a cotton field. Though her early works consisted largely of poems about ghosts and, later, teenage angst, she wrote plays when she attended Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee and started writing novels a few years later. After publishing two stand-alone mysteries, Harris launched a light-hearted mystery series 'starring' Georgia librarian Aurora Teagarden. The first of the eight books, Real Murders, was shortlisted for Best Novel in the 1990 Agatha Awards. In 1996, she released the first of the much darker Shakespeare mysteries, featuring the amateur sleuth Lily Bard, a karate student who makes her living cleaning houses. Charlaine Harris then wrote the first of her Southern vampire mysteries starring Sookie Stackhouse, the quirky, telepathic waitress who works in a bar in the fictional Northern Louisiana town of Bon Temps. Dead Until Dark won the Anthony Award for Best Paperback Mystery. It also won Harris a whole new fan club of devoted readers and pushed her into the bestseller lists. The Sookie Stackhouse series, in which Sookie has to deal with vampires, werecreatures and other supernatural folk - not to mention her own complicated love life - was also instrumental in creating the urban fantasy genre. Harris's newest series features Harper Connelly, a young woman who, after being struck by lightning, finds herself able to locate the bodies of the dead and to determine the cause of their death. There are four Harper titles (Grave Sight, Grave Surprise, An Ice Cold Grave and Grave Secret). VOX VOMITUS: Sometimes, it's not what goes right in the writing process, it's what goes horribly wrong. It's spooky season, friends, and we are ready for it! Join us in celebrating the festival of Samhain with our borderline raucous review of Dead to the World, by Charlaine Harris—otherwise known as True Blood, Season 4. When sexy vampire Eric Northman loses his memory, and with her brother, Jason, missing, Sookie Stackhouse must ignore her New Years resolution (to not get beaten up) and put her life on the line to help the supes of Bon Temps. Also discussed: the library is magical, 965 Million is a big number, please don't put your hand down the back of our pants, and we—as Americans—don't automatically fuck British people as soon as you hit or shores (although it's not out of the question). Also, Rae hops in her time machine to talk to 2004 Rae, so enjoy that. You can purchase Dead to the World on Amazon, inquire at your local bookstore, or do what Veronica did and get it from the library. Happy Wine Wednesday! We are back with another installment in our special series, The Pilot Project. Terence Johnson returns this week to discuss the pilot episode of one of our favorite guilty pleasure shows, True Blood. It turns out that Terence and I had a LOT to say about True Blood, so this week you will get our main discussion on the pilot and next week we will have a bonus spoiler segment in which Terence and I discuss the series as a whole. It's also worth noting that by the end of the first segment, a LOT of wine had been consumed and it shows. We kick things off by talking about what drew us to the True Blood pilot and whether either one of us read the source material. Of course we talk about the show's theme song and the very memorable opening sequence.Following that, we get into the Qs that need some As. We discuss the opening sequence and how Alan Ball introduced us to the world of Bon Temps. We also put a modern day lens on True Blood and discuss whether we would be open to dating a vampire and if we would have curiosity about vampire blood. You know we can't discuss a show about supernaturals or superheroes without sharing which special ability we would want.Of course we get into the Bill and Sookie of it all - their introduction, their chemistry, and the preview into their taboo love that we see in the pilot episode. In honor of Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer meeting and falling in love on the set of True Blood, we discuss some of our favorite couples who met on the set.We also get into the episode standouts, which of course includes a salute to the very talented Nelsan Ellis (RIP). We then give our final elevator pitch as to why you might want to continue watching True Blood and then things get thirsty! Thanks so much for listening! Friendly reminder - we drink, we know things, and we use adult language. We have started a new YouTube channel called Suspense Video, where this interview is also posted. We are releasing the audio of this interview on our podcast. Charlaine Harris was born in the Mississippi Delta. Her father was a farmer and then a school principal, and her mother was a librarian. Charlaine was educated at public schools and attended Rhodes College in Memphis, TN. Two thousand twenty-one will mark Charlaine's fortieth year as a published writer. She has written two stand-alones, and her series include the Aurora Teagarden mysteries, the Lily Bard mysteries, the Sookie Stackhouse urban fantasies, the Harper Connelly urban fantasies, the Midnight, Texas novels, the Cemetery Girl graphic novels (with Christopher Golden), and the Gunnie Rose books, set in an alternate history America. Charlaine has also written many short stories, and together with Toni L.P. Kelner she edited seven themed anthologies (and had great fun). The television series “True Blood” was based on Charlaine's Sookie Stackhouse novels. Hallmark Movies and Mysteries is still showing a series of movies created about the Aurora Teagarden character, and for two seasons “Midnight, Texas” was on the air. Two of her other series are in production. Charlaine belongs to several professional organizations and is an avid reader. She and her husband live on a cliff overlooking the Brazos River with their rescue dogs. Charlaine has the joy of being a grandmother, and she attends the Episcopalian church.

Some romances are far more toxic than others, and some are just straight-up couple goals. And yes, they absolutely had to discuss Sookie Stackhouse's love life from True Blood extensively. "I love relationships. I like observing them. I like thinking about them. I like back in the olden days going to the coffee shop and sitting there with my coffee and my laptop pretending to write and watching people around me," today's guest, Liz Crowe, tells me. Liz Crowe is a novelist who has published more than 25 books with two more coming soon. Her focus is romance but before you put her in a box of stereotypical romance authors, you'll have to wait. Liz is a serious writer whose books push the parameters of conventional romance novels. As Liz says her characters get into "messy situations" and she's not into HEA, short for "Happily Ever After," which is most often a requirement of romance publishers. At the core of every novel she pens is this fascination with relationships and how the evolve--or don't--and how they affect people. For her writing process, Liz admits to being "a 100% died-in-the-wool 'pantser'."What is a 'pantser'? (You'll have to listen).Liz decided she wanted to write romance because she fell in love with the work of Charlaine Harris, who is especially known for Sookie Stackhouse series picked up for the HBO True Blood series. Liz’s characters are both snarky and humorous—much like she is--as well as authentic and, she admits, troublesome. In our conversation we discuss her craft, how she approaches creating the characters who populate her books, her writing process, some of her roadblocks and she offers advice for others who might want to start writing their own fiction. We also discuss how Liz got into writing and how her stints traveling from the States to Istanbul to Japan to London, helps inform her writing. We also discuss her love/hate relationship with horror giant Stephen King, who, while she hasn't loved everything he has written, is a "master of internal dialogue" of his characters and obviously well-loved the world over. Much like Stephen King and other authors in the horror genre, Liz says there are accomplished authors in romance who don't get credit for their mastery of storytelling and writing craft. Our conversation is a deeper dive into the process, the challenges, and the mindset of an authentic, original character who happens to be a published novelist on an upward trajectory. I hope you enjoy my conversation with Liz.Links:FirebrewOther writers Liz loves:Marian Keyes Olivia DadeTalia HibbertNeil GaimanOther mentions:Fermenta, Fermenta is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit trade group initiated by women, committed to education, networking, diversity, and empowerment within the fermented beverage and food industries.Annette May, CiceroneLiz on InstagramLiz on FacebookIntro/Outro Illuminate graciously provided by Wildes

Don’t forget to subscribe to the podcast in your favorite podcasting platform — and while you’re there, please leave us a like or a review! In two weeks, we’re getting more current! The read is Sarah’s Pick, Sierra Simone’s Priest, which is an erotic romance in first-person hero POV, featuring a priest and an exotic dancer (NB: She is not Catholic). If sex in church is your concern, maybe skip this one, but also know that there’s a lot fo religious allegory in here that is fascinating and brilliant. Get it at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple Books, Kobo or your local indie.Show Notes- JR Ward's first pen name was Jessica Bird.- Despite Jen's joke about Proust, she's never actually read him.- Some of the most famous vampire books in fiction were Anne Rice's Interview with a Vampire and Queen of the Damned. And let's not forget Twilight.- In romance, you should check out the Argeneau series by Lynsay Sands, or any number of books by Jeaniene Frost. Nalini Singh's Guild Hunters series has a vampire hunter. Sherrilyn Kenyon also has lots of books in this category. In urban fantasy, of course there was the Sookie Stackhouse series, and it's TV adaptation True Blood.- In fact, the 90s were full of vampires in the movies and on TV: Keanu Reeves in Bram Stoker's Dracula, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and if you've never seen it, the opening scene from Blade that Jen mentioned.- Sarah would like you to consider the fact that very few people know who Mary Shelley is, but Francis Ford Coppola made a blockbuster movie with Bram Stoker's name in the actual title because patriarchy is a helluva drug.- Is it romance or urban fantasy?- The JR Ward interview was in Louisville Magazine.- The Wicked Wallflowers interviewed JR Ward and it's just terrific.- Jen read all the RITAs, and she reviewed Consumed in the romantic suspense category and Dearest Ivie in the paranormal category.- All about sawed-off shotguns.- Sarah said John Michael, but OF COURSE she meant John Matthew. Maybe you should read Lover John Matthew and Xhex.- Mary Bly's article about the Black Dagger Brotherhood appears in New Approaches to Popular Romance Fiction.- The Lessers as Incels. -Caldwell is like the world of Gotham... and why it seems so nihilistic.-Beth and Wrath's story continues in The King, or as we like to call it here at Fated Mates, Lover Wrath and Beth Part 2.- It's Lover Phury and Cormia, and then Lover Rhevenge and Ehlena, and Lover Quinn and Blay.- The Susan Faludi book Sarah mentioned is called The Terror Dream: Myth and Misogyny in an Insecure America.- We don't think Beth is a Mary Sue, and JR Ward doesn't either. -A guide to the waves of feminism.- A ferrari doesn't weight 2000 tons. A ton is 2000 pounds.- Wellsie is maybe a stand in for Smith vs. Wellesley.- Jen was reading Native Son in college when her professor told her blindness is always a symbol. Oedipus blinded himself, and oracles are seers are often blind. Daredevil is blind and can still kick your ass. The other most famous Blind King Jen could find is in Assassin's Creed.- Next up is Priest by Sierra Simone.

There has never been more opportunities for writers and storytellers than ever in the history of publishing, and Episode 52 of the Kobo Writing Life Podcast demonstrates yet another amazing opportunity that exists for writers. KWL Director Mark Lefebvre interviews Jean Leggett co-founder of One More Story Games, a company from Barrie, Ontario that has developed a storytelling platform with a team of gamers, geeks, storytellers and programmers that creates a community for collaborative story game opportunities. In the interview, Mark and Jean discuss: Jean's background as a recovering Haiku addict and recovering stand-up comedian How Jean's love of storytelling combined with her husband's similar love and a computer science background and background working in the games industry led to the formation of One More Story Games The underlying concept of bringing more reading into the game space How the experience of these games is similar to the “Choose Your Own Adventure” branching narrative experiences StoryStylus – the story creation platform that helps creators break down the elements of story (such as people, places, things, relationships, conversation and dialogue, etc) that publishes to an interactive games marketplace The fact that you don't need to be a programmer to be part of creating an interactive story game and how virtually any writer could participate in this process. (With a reminder that “Beta” means “patient, early adopters”) A writer, photographer and graphic designer in Tillsonburg, Ontario (Dan Wilkins) who is writing an 8 part series for One More Story Games and involving real people, such as the town's mayor as characters in the story The manner by which a platform like this seems ideal for mystery stories, but the manner by which science fiction and adventure stories have already been built for it The exciting announcement that One More Story Games will be working with New York Times bestselling author Charlaine Harris (author of the Sookie Stackhouse - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sookie_Stackhouse - novels which have been adapted into the True Blue television series) to adapt her novel Shakespeare's Landlord How the Charlaine Harris project will include a “behind the scenes” look at breaking the book itself into various plot points and how it was developed into the interactive storytelling experience (https://onemorestorygames.com/2016/02/16/lily-bard-online/) The idea of making smarter more casual games available to the growing demographic of women consumers in their mid 30's who are interested in and playing these types of games The concept of how a game like this demonstrates the progression of writer to narrative designer for a storyteller Recommendations on how authors who are interested in exploring these opportunities might get started Links of Interest: One More Story Games One More Story Games on Twitter One More Story Games on Facebook Story Stylus FAQ Charlaine Harris Website YouTube Tutorial Videos from One More Story Games

THE LINE, an urban fantasy set in Savannah, Georgia, is the first book of the Witching Savannah series. In his debut as an author, J.D Horn powerfully portrays the Hoodoo underbelly of this genteel and charming small city.Recalling the otherwordly drama of Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse, THE LINE is centered on Mercy Taylor, young scion to the most powerful witch family of the south, who has grown up in the shadow of her talented and charismatic twin sister, because unfortunately, she was born without the gift of magic. Mercy has always thought herself content. But when a series of mishaps -- culminating in the death of the Taylor matriarch -- leaves a vacuum in the mystical underpinnings of Savannah, she finds herself thrust into a mystery that could shake her family apart, and unleash a darkness the line of Taylor witches has been keeping at bay for generations. In advance of its release on February 1, the book had already become a best seller on Amazon, reaching #1 in Occult Horror books, Contemporary Science Fiction & Fantasy, Occult Horror Kindle ebooks, and Paranormal & Urban Fantasy Kindle ebooks.J. D. Horn was raised in rural Tennessee, and has since carried a bit of its red clay in him while traveling the world, from Hollywood, to Paris, to Tokyo. He studied comparative literature as an undergrad, focusing on French and Russian in particular. He also holds an MBA in international business and worked as a financial analyst before becoming a novelist. When not writing he is likely running, and he has race bibs from two full marathons and about thirty half marathons.
We dive neckfirst into the realm of southern vampires this week as Jen Usellis Mackay returns to the show to guide us through the first Sookie Stackhouse book, Dead Until Dark. Will we declare it a D-U-D (see what I did there?) or be won over to the supernatural romance genre by Sookie's moxie, Eric's debonair ways, and Bill's “Billness”? In our Nerd To-Dos, we tackle some Jason Bourne, Halloween preparations, World of Warcraft, and 24.
