What more can be said about Andy Warhol? Campbell's Soup. Marilyn Monroe. Pop Art. The Factory. Fright wig. 15 minutes. Connect the dots and you feel pretty confident in your short-hand knowledge of who Warhol was and his place in modern art and contemporary culture. But, as much as Andy Warhol is a household name when it comes to 1960's celebrity icons, not a lot is known about Warhol's interior life or his intimate relationships. Using Warhol's diaries (published just two years after his death) as a springboard, Emmy Award®-nominated filmmaker Andrew Rossi (“Page One: Inside the New York Times”, “Ivory Tower”) takes aim at those parts of Warhol's life and career that are far less familiar to us. The result, Rossi's sprawling new, must-see six-part Netflix series “The Andy Warhol Diaries”, is a fascinating portrait of the man who stated his desire to be “like a machine,” but, in reality, was a deeply emotional person whose intimate relationships and vulnerabilities reveal much about who he was and offer valuable insights into the enduring brilliance of his art.   How did Rossi use new A.I. technology, and the skills of actor Bill Irwin, to create a chillingly lifelike version of Warhol's voice? Who were Jed Johnson and Jon Gould, and in what ways do these men unlock the key to understanding Warhol's emotional life? Why was it so important to Rossi to explicate Warhol's diaries as a seminal queer text? How did Warhol's complicated relationship with the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat lead to one of the most creatively fruitful collaborations in the history of modern art? The truth is Andy Warhol was famous for a lot longer than 15 minutes. But now — thanks to Andrew Rossi's masterful, exhaustively researched and richly-layered series — we have a window into the off-screen Warhol. It turns out that all the things that he was not famous for give us a whole new perspective on the artist and the man. Now on Netflix   Follow on twitter: @a_rossi @topdocspod

On this podcast, we'll be showcasing the mouthwatering Tasting Menus from leading cultural and music PR agency WildKat, as well as acclaimed composer, sound artist and performer Drum & Lace whose latest EP "Further" was released last week. WildKat Tasting Menus WildKat's Press Assistant Robert Shone writes: "It is well known that a careful combination of sound and taste can elevate the sensory experience of both parties. Back in 1997, Heston Blumenthal enhanced his fish dish 'Sounds of the Sea' through utilising an iPod of sea soundscapes to create 'sonic seasoning'. We here at WildKat are doing the reverse. Throughout the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic, WildKat will be enhancing many virtual classical music experiences with a carefully paired item of food or drink. Every week, our team will create a brand new Menu of 14 livestreams, specially paired with 14 recipes. Each week, a member of the WildKat team will also provide a recommendation of a TV show, book, or a piece of art to help stimulate and inspire during this trying time." To sample these Tasting Menus, please visit wildkatpr.com/news or WildKat PR on socials. Drum & Lace Drum & Lace (also known as Sofia Hultquist) is an Italian-born composer, sound artist and performer that writes and creates music for film and media. Among her impressive credits include fashion documentary "The First Monday in May" (dir Andrew Rossi), the AppleTV+ Original Series "Dickinson" (created by Alena Smith) and season 3 of NBC “Good Girls” (created by Jenna Bans & Bill Krebs). Other notable collaborations include leading brands such as NARS, Always, Tanya Taylor, Girls Who Code, Squarespace, as well as theatre production company Saudade Theatre and contemporary dance company Heidi Duckler Dance. Drum & Lace's performance work often includes sound installation and spatial audio elements, at events such as Moogfest and National Sawdust. Her latest EP "Further" was originally commissioned as a new work for Heidi Duckler Dance that features field recordings, samples from Yellowstone National Park's online archive, electronics and strings performed by the London Contemporary Orchestra. Inspired by Emily Dickinson's poem "Further in Summer than the Birds," an ode to nature, the EP depicts the journey of a bird. I talked to Drum & Lace last week from her home studio in Los Angeles about the creative inspiration, research and compositional processes behind the release, as well as the broader ideas and issues arising from the EP. Most notably, this includes the importance of protecting, listening to and caring for nature, actions that many people having been reflecting on over these last few months. Many thanks to Hannah Goldshlack-Wolf for bringing this fascinating and thought-provoking listen to my attention and arranging this discussion, and to Drum & Lace for taking the time to talk especially for this podcast. Journalist Jesse Barron shares his insight on this very difficult and complex case. In July 2014, 18-year-old Conrad Roy died by suicide in his car at a parking lot in Fairhaven, Mass. Police soon discovered a series of alarming text messages from his girlfriend, 17-year-old Michelle Carter, that seemed to encourage him to kill himself. This discovery sparked sensational headlines nationwide, leading to a trial that raised difficult questions about technology, social media and mental health, while asking if one person can be held responsible for the suicide of another. In 2012, teens Michelle Carter and Conrad Roy fell in love. They lived hours apart and met in person no more than five times, but exchanged thousands of texts over a two-year period. After Roy was found dead in his car in July 2014, what appeared to be a standard case of suicide by carbon-monoxide intoxication took a shocking turn when investigators discovered alarming text messages on his phone. Carter, 17 at the time, had urged Roy to kill himself, even after he had second thoughts and removed himself from his car.  Directed by Erin Lee Carr (HBO’s At the Heart of Gold: Inside the USA Gymnastics Scandal and Mommy Dead and Dearest) I Love You, Now Die explores the complicated relationship between Carter and Roy, drawing on some of the thousands of texts they exchanged over two years to chronicle their courtship and its tragic consequences. Featuring unprecedented access to the families, friends and communities that were forever changed by this unusual case, the documentary explores the changing nature of the justice system today, following a story that has wider implications for society at large, both online and in real life. The film presents a well-rounded look at a bizarre tale that was a deadly convergence of mental illness, loneliness, pop culture and technology. In July 2017, Michelle Carter was charged with involuntary manslaughter in the suicide of Roy. In August 2017, she was found guilty and began her 15-month prison sentence in February 2019, following a failed appeal. I Love You, Now Die includes footage from Michelle Carter’s trial, where the filmmakers had the only camera allowed in court and supplied the pool camera for this historic case. It also features interviews with key individuals in the story, including: Conrad Roy’s immediate family; Joseph Cataldo, Michelle Carter’s defense attorney; Dr. Peter Breggin, an expert witness for the defense; police detectives; and journalists who covered the case extensively. The documentary premiered at this year’s South by Southwest Film Festival. I Love You, Now Die is directed and produced by Erin Lee Carr; produced by Andrew Rossi; co-producer, Alison Byrne; original music, Ian Hultquist; cinematographer, Bryan Sarkinen; editor, Andrew Coffman; executive producer, Sheila Nevins; senior producer, Sara Bernstein.

Page One: Inside the New York Times is a new documentary about the challenges facing the famous US newspaper in the digital age. Director Andrew Rossi was granted access to parts of the paper during an eventful year, which included the Wikileaks affair, US troops pulling out of Iraq (sort of), the decline of US print journalism and the rise of social media platforms including Twitter. As certain US papers go out of business, the film also focuses on two contrasting media reporters, David Carr and Bryan Stelter, as they report on the realities of the Internet era and the struggles their paper faces. Andrew Rossi previously directed the HBO documentary Le Cirque: A Table In Heaven (2007) and was was also associate producer on Control Room (2004). I spoke with him recently in London about the film and the related issues surrounding it. Official website: http://pageoneinsidethenewyorktimes.com/File Download (0:00 min / 23 MB)
