Sissy and David sit down with Sharon McMahon to discuss how parents can help children become informed, resilient, and capable in a complicated world. Sharon shares her journey from classroom teacher to becoming “America's Government Teacher,” and talks about the importance of balancing protection and preparation as kids grow. Together, they explore how children can handle difficult topics when guided by trusted adults, why self-awareness is essential for modeling calm engagement, and how teaching kids to focus on “the next needed thing” helps build confidence and agency. Sharon also shares the inspiring story of civil rights leader Septima Clark and explains why her new children's book encourages kids to believe that ordinary people can make an extraordinary difference. How do we find people who can help us carry the weight of our stories? How do we learn to experience safety in community when relationships themselves have often been the source of deep pain?Author, speaker, and podcaster Toni Collier has endured profound hardship throughout her life, including caring for a parent at a young age, surviving an abusive marriage, experiencing sexual betrayal, enduring sexual manipulation as a child, walking through two divorces, and more. Learning to trust others with the deepest parts of her story did not come easily. Yet through the healing power of what she calls a Confessional Community, Toni began experiencing layers of healing and freedom she never thought possible. In her latest book, Don't Try This Alone: How to Build Deep Community When You Want to Hide from Your Pain, Toni shares how authentic, vulnerable community can become one of the primary ways God brings healing through suffering. In this episode, Davey and Toni talk about why confession and vulnerability are such essential parts of healing, how we can become safe people that others trust with their pain, and the emotional and spiritual dangers of isolation and hidden suffering. If opening up to others has felt difficult—especially in seasons of pain, disappointment, or heartbreak—this conversation will remind you that healing was never meant to happen alone and that God often uses deep, authentic community as part of the restoration process He wants to invite you into. Mark series · Part 18 | Scripture: Mark 5:35–43 The messengers arrive with the worst news a father could ever hear: Jairus's little girl has died. "Why bother the teacher anymore?" But Jesus turns to the heartbroken dad and says, "Don't be afraid; just believe." Together we walk the long, silent road to Jairus's house and witness one of the most tender moments in the Gospel of Mark — Jesus taking a little girl by the hand and calling her back to life. Jairus came asking for a healing. Jesus gave him something far greater. A gentle, hope-filled episode for talking with your kids about a hard subject — death — and the One who is stronger than it. In This Episode "Not dead but asleep" — and why the mourners laughed A gentle look at "chronological snobbery": the people of Jesus' day knew exactly what death was — they weren't gullible The Big Idea This story answers the question the disciples first asked back in the storm — "Who is this?" — Jesus is the One with power over death itself. And He uses that power tenderly: mighty enough to raise the dead, gentle enough to hold a little girl's hand. It points us forward to Jesus' own death and resurrection, and to the hope for everyone who trusts Him. Support either way = Shout outs 1. ad-free episodes +

David and Sissy explore the unique role fathers play in helping daughters develop confidence, resilience, and capability. Through personal stories, research, and counseling insights, they discuss how dads build capability by spending time with their daughters, teaching practical skills, staying emotionally engaged, and continuing to pursue connection even during the challenging adolescent years. They also address common pitfalls, such as aligning with daughters against moms or withdrawing when daughters seem distant, and offer practical ways fathers can strengthen connection through shared experiences, curiosity, encouragement, and consistent presence. In this episode of Dadville, we sat down with Lee C. Camp, a professor of theology and ethics who has spent over two decades helping people wrestle with what it means to live a life worth living. While he is the host of the nationally syndicated show No Small Endeavor, Lee got remarkably vulnerable about his own "spiral" into depression at age 47 and the "unresolved crap" he had to address within his own family. We were especially moved by his "85% rule" for parenting, which suggests that a 15% margin for error is a liberating way to teach kids about humility and apologies. He also shared the reality of his "serenity tax"—living without a cell phone for nearly a decade to avoid the "claws of technology". From stories about sons cutting ethernet cables to his deep dive into cardinal virtues, Lee reminds us that the "good life" is a beautiful, iterative process. Scripture: Mark 5:21–35 Series: Mark part 17 In today's episode, we continue our journey through the Gospel of Mark and meet a woman who had been sick for twelve years. She had tried everything. Spent everything. And nothing had worked. But she had heard about Jesus—and she believed that if she could just get close enough to touch His cloak, she would be healed. And she was. Instantly. But then Jesus stopped and asked, "Who touched me?" The disciples thought it was a silly question—everyone was touching Him! So why did Jesus stop and ask? Today we find out. We also meet Jairus—an important man who falls at Jesus' feet and begs Him to come heal his dying daughter. Jesus agrees and heads that way. But then the news arrives: "Your daughter is dead." We will have to wait until next time to find out what happens next… In This Episode We Talk About: Why Jesus stopped What a superstition is and why Jesus didn't want the woman to have one What faith really means for young kids today How to trust Jesus with the things that feel scary or hard
Kaleb and I had a really honest conversation about something that's been on our hearts lately: Is Christian social media actually helping people grow in their faith, or could it sometimes be hurting them? We talked about the incredible ways God has used social media to reach people, share the Gospel, and build community, but we also wrestled with the challenges that come with Christian influencing, performative faith, monetizing ministry, comparison, and call-out culture. This conversation was especially personal because we've both experienced different sides of the Christian creator world. We discussed the tension between sharing your faith publicly and keeping your relationship with God authentic and personal. Kaleb opened up about why he sometimes struggles with faith-based content online, while I shared how God has used social media in my own journey and in the lives of so many others. One of our biggest takeaways? Christian influencers can inspire us, but they should never replace our personal relationship with Jesus, our local church, or real-life Christian community. Social media can be an amazing tool, but it should point us back to God—not become the source of our faith. Mentioned Resources Follow Luke Lezon ORDER MY BOOK! David and Sissy explore the powerful relationship between moms and sons, emphasizing that moms are often a boy's emotional home base and play a key role in shaping his confidence, emotional health, and future relationships. They discuss how boys often express their biggest emotions where they feel safest and encourage moms to respond with warmth, steadiness, and clear boundaries. Have you ever felt the weight of an offense sitting in your chest like a stone, keeping you from the peace you know you're meant to carry? In this episode I sit down with Pastors April and Micahn Carter to get real about the "spirit of offense." We're cutting through the noise to expose how holding onto hurt isn't just a spiritual issue, it's a physical and relational cage. If you've been feeling isolated, exhausted, or stuck, this conversation is your key to freedom. We're breaking down the roots of bitterness and bringing you the spiritual tools to walk in true liberation. In this episode, we dive into: The Roots of Bitterness: Micahn pulls back the curtain on why we get offended—often it's the entitlement, the embarrassment, or the unrealistic expectations we hold over others. The "Proximity" Trap: Why the people closest to us; our church family, our familia, our dearest friends; are the ones who wound us the deepest. Decisional vs. Emotional Forgiveness: We aren't just talking about saying "I forgive you." We're teaching you the difference between the choice to let go of revenge and the daily work of replacing resentment with compassion. Prayer as an Anointing: Learn why it is impossible to stay angry when you are actively, fervently praying for the very people who hurt you. Owning Your Story: True healing starts when we realize we've all been the offender at some point. We discuss how to swallow our pride, listen to the pain behind the conflict, and walk in grace. Grab your Bible, get a cup of coffee, and join @michancarter, @therealaprilcarter and me @biancajuarezofficial as we choose freedom over bondage. Sissy Goff and David Thomas sit down with father and son Randy and Scott Hearon for a deeply honest conversation about the father-son relationship. Through stories spanning childhood, adolescence, and adulthood, they explore the messages boys receive about identity, capability, performance, faith, and belonging. Randy reflects on his growth as a father, including the impact of addiction, sports culture, and grace, while Scott shares how his dad's presence, vulnerability, encouragement, and willingness to grow alongside him shaped his life. Together they discuss the importance of helping boys know they have what it takes, the dangers of performance-based identity, and the power of authentic relationships, forgiveness, and faith in building lasting connections between parents and children. How do we reconcile our dysregulation after trauma when it comes to our faith? What is the connection between our physiological experience and God?It was through Lacey Jervis own experience with trauma that she began to understand the profound impact the body's physical responses can have after loss. After losing her dad to a heart attack at a young age while she was home with him, Lacey began to recognize how deeply trauma affects both the nervous system and our perception of ourselves, others, and even God. That journey eventually led her to help others navigate the complex relationship between trauma, the body, and faith.Through her work with women as a Somatic Therapist, Lacey began helping clients untangle their physiological responses from what they often assumed were spiritual failures. As she guided them toward understanding the body's reactions and equipped them with tools to restore safety and regulation, many began to realize that what they believed was a faith issue was often a physiological response rooted in trauma. In this episode, Davey and Lacey journey through her story of losing her dad and explore the lasting ways trauma impacts the body, the physiological responses that can remain long after a traumatic event and why it is so important to understand the difference between dysregulation and disobedience. If you have ever felt like your faith was weak because of the ways your body becomes dysregulated after trauma, this conversation will remind you that God is not disappointed in your dysregulation. Instead, there is an invitation to holiness through your humanity. Website: https://www.daughtershouse.co/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/laceyjervis Not living the story you expected? In episode 382, Sissy Goff and David Thomas continue their Capable Connections series by exploring the unique relationship between fathers and sons. They discuss how fatherhood shapes both men and children, while highlighting challenges boys face around performance, emotional expression, and isolation. Through research, personal stories, and practical advice, they encourage dads to help sons build healthy identities, strong relationships, and emotional resilience by modeling vulnerability, prioritizing connection, and reminding boys that their worth is not based on achievement. We sat down with 4-time Grammy winner Sara Watkins to solve a problem every professional faces: How do you maintain a 30-year career without burning out or losing your creative edge? From founding Nickel Creek at age eight to touring with icons like Jackson Browne, Sara has mastered the "communal dance" of longevity. In this session, we tackle the high-stakes pressure of performance anxiety. Sara reveals the counterintuitive secret that transformed her art: how motherhood taught her to stop "sweating the small stuff," making her a more fearless performer. We break down her blueprint for navigating complex team dynamics, the power of "side-person" leadership, and why she treats music as an essential life skill—like math or cooking—to avoid the traps of forced practice. If you're struggling to balance ego with collaborative success, Sara's "osmotic" approach to learning will revolutionize your workflow. This is your masterclass in staying grounded while scaling your talent. In this final episode of our Daughters series, we're diving into the story of Priscilla—a woman whose life reminds us that God loves to use ordinary people in extraordinary ways. Even though Priscilla doesn't have a single, linear story in Scripture, her impact on the early church is impossible to miss. Alongside her husband Aquila, she modeled faithful partnership, discipleship, hospitality, and unwavering commitment to God's mission. We talk about what it looks like to build the Kingdom alongside other people, why discipleship often happens around dinner tables and in everyday conversations, and how God uses His daughters to make an eternal impact. As we close out this entire series, we reflect on the beautiful truth that we are deeply loved daughters of God, living in light of the resurrection and empowered to share the hope of Jesus wherever He places us. In this episode, Shawn Johnson East and Andrew East discuss the importance of commitment, resilience, and raising capable kids. Drawing from their experiences as elite athletes and parents, they share how supportive parents helped them build confidence through challenges rather than rescuing them from discomfort. How can we partner with the Holy Spirit in our own journey toward healing? What role does the Spirit of God play in breaking strongholds in our lives? For author and pastor Alex Seeley, it was her own experience of healing through the power of the Holy Spirit that revealed how important—and often overlooked—the Holy Spirit is in the modern Church. After walking through breakthrough from a childhood marked by abuse and struggles with disordered eating, Alex also witnessed countless others find true freedom through deep encounters with the Holy Spirit. In her book The Divine Counselor, she explores the incredible role and invitation the Holy Spirit offers in the healing God desires for us.In this episode, Davey and Alex discuss why obedience to the Spirit matters, how the Holy Spirit meets us in our pain and strongholds, and the connection between spiritual and physical healing. If you've ever struggled to understand how God wants to meet you through His Spirit, this conversation will encourage you that the Lord's power is closer than you may realize—ready to lead you into deeper renewal, healing, and purpose than you've ever experienced. Series: Mark Part 16Scripture: Mark 5:1–20 In today's episode, we continue our journey through the Gospel of Mark and see Jesus step onto the shore in the region of the Gerasenes. There, He meets a man who is suffering terribly and living among the tombs. This story includes demons, sometimes the Bible also calls them unclean spirits, but we handle this carefully and remind kids of the most important truth: Jesus is stronger than darkness. As Jesus speaks with authority, the unclean spirits must obey Him. The man who had been alone, hurting, and in bondage is restored. When the people come and see him, he is sitting with Jesus, dressed, and in his right mind. What a beautiful picture of mercy and rescue. This episode helps kids see that Jesus does not only save and restore people so they can keep it to themselves. He gives His people a story to tell. Wherever Jesus places us—at home, with friends, at school, or in our community—we can tell others how much the Lord has done. Today's key truth:Jesus is stronger than darkness, full of mercy, and wants us to share his goodness with others. ------------------ The Wonder Project: Subscriber support makes more great content like I Gotta Ask with Annie F. Welcome to a special video edition of Dadville! We're kicking things off with Dave's high-energy celebration of Arsenal's Premier League victory and a deep dive into why sports culture feels like family. Then, we pivot to the "frontal assault" of summer parenting. As school rhythms fade, we share our best survival "tips and tricks" to keep the chaos at bay. Discover the power of tangible bucket lists—featuring everything from Walmart trips to visiting local glass-blowing studios—and learn how to manage screen time by treating it as "capital" earned through reading or chores. We also discuss Jon's $100 piano challenge and why local summer camps are a strategic win for every parent. In this episode of our Daughters Series, we unpack the powerful story of Mary and Martha and discover why this familiar Bible story still has so much to teach us. We talk about the tension between doing things for Jesus and simply being with Him, the danger of burnout and performance-based faith, and the beautiful invitation Jesus gives every daughter to sit at His feet. We also explore one of the most moving moments in Scripture—Jesus weeping with Mary after the death of Lazarus—and what it reveals about His heart toward our pain, disappointment, and grief. Finally, we look at Mary's extravagant act of worship and uncover a powerful pattern throughout her life: every time we see Mary, she's found at the feet of Jesus. Whether you're feeling busy, burned out, heartbroken, or simply longing for more of God's presence, we hope this conversation reminds you that the posture of a daughter is always found at the feet of Jesus. Pastor Aaron Graham is the founder and lead pastor of a thriving, multicultural church in Washington, D.C. representing more than 80 nations, called The District Church, and he's spent years helping people navigate faith and culture. He's also the author of a brand new book called Unshakable Faith, where he talks about how to stand firm in what we believe, even when everything around us feels like it's shifting. Today we're unpacking a new spiritual rhythm-- confession. Aaron helps us rethink confession…not as something heavy or shame-filled, but as an invitation back into closeness with God. Join us over on spirituallystronger.com as well where we have a confession practice guide for you to use. This is just a simple download that will help you think through what may need to be brought into the light. And if you need a place to share what you've been struggling with and need someone to confess to, you can always send us an email at tellmemore@anniefdowns.com. We'd be honored to read them. We recently recorded an episode of Single Purpose League about mothering, and as soon as we finished, I looked at the team and said, “Should we share this with the larger That Sounds Fun audience?” With Mother's Day this past Sunday, we recognize how complicated that day can be for so many of us. For some, you're mourning the loss of your mom or the mom you'd hope for. For others, you're mourning the fact that you can't biologically have children. And for others, you're carrying the tension of being a mom while also wrestling with the fact that it's harder than you ever could have imagined. In this episode from Single Purpose League, you're going to hear a conversation between myself, Katy Boatman who co-leads Single Purpose League with me, and our friend, Christen who is a single mom of two adopted little boys. Our hope is that whatever emotion this day holds, you'll be reminded that the story God writes is full of hope and purpose, even if it's harder than you would have imagined. If you're not married right now, and you want to hear more conversations like this, we'd love to get to know you in Single Purpose League! We drop a new episode once a month over on Patreon and then we get to chat it up and talk about it together on our monthly livestreams. It's a blast and we still have a lot of fun things planned for SPL this year. Check it out at singlepurposeleague.com. Find the show notes here . . . . Today we are unpacking generosity with my friend, Jon Acuff. Jon is always equal parts hilarious, honest, and incredibly helpful, and today's conversation is one I think you're going to love. As we talk about generosity…we're going to talk about what it practically looks like, how it changes us, and ways to be generous with more than just our money. Jon brings so much wisdom and practical perspective to this conversation. He also has a brand new book out called Procrastination Proof, so we get into that too—how to stop putting off the things that matter most, how to actually make progress, and why procrastination doesn't have to run the show. We also have a Generosity Practice Guide available for you over today on spirituallystronger.com We want to make sure we're not just talking about spiritual disciplines this year, but actually putting them into practice, so we've created this practice guide to give you some ideas. Typically our resources are available only to our Spiritually Stronger paid substack subscribers, but we wanted to give you a peek at what these guides are like because we have 3 more coming soon. So in the spirit of generosity, today it's free ;) Just head over to spirituallystronger.com to download it. . . . . Welcome to the very first episode of what we're calling AFD's Friday Faves! I have a playlist on Spotify called AFD's Friday Faves where I'll update it from time to time with music I'm listening to or songs I think you'll love, and now we're bringing it to the podcast. These shorter episodes won't happen every Friday, but we wanted to make space to tell you stories and introduce you to friends who are creating incredible music, so AFD's Friday Faves will pop up in your feed from time to time, and there is no better way to kick this off than with Amy Grant. Today her brand-new record, The Me That Remains releases. It is the kind of record that makes you want to sit on your porch and listen all the way through. Amy said, “I hope this album feels easy to be with,” and I thought… yes. That's exactly it. Because that's true of Amy too. She is easy to be with, but she always brings important things with her. So whether you're on your porch, in your car, on a walk, or just trying to make it through your day, I think you're going to love this conversation. . . . . Now that we've covered 2 different spiritual disciplines, prayer and fasting, we wanted to zoom out for a minute and talk about the practical side of our rhythms. Do we have to start our mornings with a quiet time? What if you're a busy parent or a single mom? What does time with God in the morning look like? We're talking about all of it today with Jennifer Dukes Lee! I really think you're going to love her new book, How to Love Your Morning. Honestly, if you're looking for a gift idea for a mom, this would be a great one. Morning person or not, let's figure out how to start our day from a place of surrender with God. It doesn't have to be quiet and it doesn't have to be hours long. Join us on Substack at spirituallystronger.com! View the show notes here . . . .
