If you are new around here, we have a yearly tradition today, January 6th. Epiphany. The tradition of you and I just chatting. The last day of Christmastide. Day 12 of the 12 days of Christmas. This Epiphany episode is the only time all year that I sit in this podcast studio alone. It matters to me that y'all know this. It matters because, in part, I want today to feel like a one on one conversation, like we're getting coffee. Except you know me, I'm drinking tea. In December, Emily P. Freeman joined us on the podcast and gave us a few leading questions for shaping our year. As I thought about this episode today, there are two questions, inspired by Emily, I want to answer for you: What are we stopping this year?  What are we starting this year?  These are not just for That Sounds Fun podcast, this are for all things AFD Inc- from my writing, to speaking, to podcasting. I want to give you a full view of what God might be up in 2026 to through the work my team and I get to do and make. . . . . . Join our NEW Substack Here! . . . . . On the winter solstice (the shortest day and longest night of the year) Scripture reminds us that darkness is never the end of the story. In this message, we look at the third story in Luke 15, often called The Parable of the Prodigal Son, and discover that it's really a story about two lost sons and a Father who never stops welcoming His children home. Whether we relate more to the younger son or the older son, this message invites us to see where grace and truth meet. As we reflect on the darkest day of the year, we're reminded of a powerful truth: light is coming on the horizon. Jesus shows us that no one is too far gone, no heart is too proud to need repentance, and no darkness is beyond the reach of His light. Today can be our turning point. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – If this message encouraged you, let us know in the comments. Y'all, we have spent an entire year talking about the impact of the seasons on our spiritual, emotional, and physical lives. A whole year working through things in our TSF Seasons Guidebook. Sooo many brilliant friends have joined us to mentor us through the winter, spring, summer, and fall and now we've circled all the way back. It's cold outside again. The snow is on the ground again for some of you. The days are darker outside. And we've made it. On December 21st, winter begins and we will have officially finished our lap through all four seasons.  Today, there was only one person who could help us end what we started and that's the pastor that made us all so curious about what God does in seasons. If you haven't heard Episode 851 about the season God has you in with Pastor Banning Liebscher, I would love for you to go back and listen to that. It was the conversation that started this whole year doing a deep dive about seasons. Today, we're going to talk about what we've seen God do across the world this year and the way He's worked in seasons in our lives—the ones that passed quickly and the ones that lasted longer than we hoped. And then we're going to talk about which spiritual discipline Banning thinks we need to lean into in 2026 as he looks at the state of the church right now. In your TSF Seasons Guidebook, we're on page 130, so get those note-taking pages ready.  . . . . . If you enjoyed this episode, I think you'd also love Episode 973 with Jon Tyson. . . . . . I have absolutely no chill about today's episode. I mean it…you might want to grab a notebook, a pen, maybe even two, because this is a full-on mind-blown episode. Rabbi Jason Sobel is a Jewish man who believes Jesus is the Messiah, and the way he connects the dots between the Old Testament and the New? Y'all… it's like watching the story of Jesus go from regular definition to full-on high definition. We're talking about his journey of faith, how we can better understand and connect with Jewish culture, the significance of the number eight (just wait for that part!), and he even gives us the cultural and historical context of the birth of Jesus in a way that will have you sitting there going, “How did I not know this?!” He has served as a spiritual advisor for The Chosen since its inception and you're going to love getting to learn from him. They talk about the abundant life Jesus promises, even in seasons that feel slow, confusing, or disappointing. Annie shares wisdom from her own story, the long stretches of waiting, and the surprising ways God shows up when we feel forgotten or behind. If you've ever wondered, "What's my purpose? What is God doing? Why hasn't this prayer been answered yet?" this conversation will encourage you, challenge you, and remind you that God is never late, never distant, and never withholding good from His children. When tragedy strikes, adults struggle to make sense of it, but for children, the confusion and pain can feel overwhelming. In this deeply moving episode, Annie F. Downs sits down with Drs. Zach & Tim Clinton to talk about the story behind her new children’s book, Where Did TJ Go?, written after her family experienced the heartbreaking loss of her nephew, TJ. Together, they explore what it means to grieve honestly, talk to children about death and heaven, and embrace the kind of compassion that “suffers with.” Annie shares powerful insights on how to navigate the messiness of grief, the healing power of presence, and the truth that while loss changes everything, the hope of eternity changes how we see it. Whether you’re a parent, pastor, counselor, or simply someone walking through loss, this episode offers space for your sorrow and points your heart toward the unshakable hope we have in Christ. There's a kind of faith that performs instead of worships, and eventually, that kind of faith breaks down. This week on Win Today, Paul and Hannah McClure from Bethel Music join me to talk about the slow drift from softness to cynicism in the life of a believer. We talk about the orphan spirit, fake faith that looks right but can't hold weight, and how disappointment left untreated eventually hardens into disconnection. We also confront the myth that faith equals certainty, and why true worship isn't just a song; it's surrender in the absence of clarity. For anyone who's battled disillusionment in church, questioned the language of worship, or wondered whether they're singing words they don't believe anymore, this conversation offers both confrontation and comfort. Paul and Hannah don't sugarcoat the road. But they do point to healing. This isn't about emotional hype. It's about reclaiming your heart before it turns cold. You'll learn: Why disappointment often precedes cynicism What the orphan spirit really is—and how it forms How fake faith is often learned, not chosen Why worship without surrender is just noise How to walk with God when certainty disappears Guest Bio Paul and Hannah McClure are worship leaders, songwriters, and pastors with Bethel Music. Known for their vulnerability, depth, and refusal to perform, their ministry helps people reconnect with a God who isn't afraid of pain. They've led a generation to encounter God through honesty, not hype. Their story is one of surrender, resilience, and the long journey back from burnout, cynicism, and emotional numbness. You're Not Alone: A Tender Conversation on Infant Loss and Trusting God in Grief with Tatum Green and David Thomas- Episode 1010

Today we're re-airing a special conversation that I got to have with my sister, Tatum Green, and our friend and counselor, David Thomas. We first shared this conversation back in February when Where Did TJ Go? released, and it's one that so many of you have told me has stayed with you. Today on October 15th — Infant Loss Awareness Day — we wanted to bring it back, to honor the families who have walked through loss, to hold space for your stories, and to remind you that you're not alone. This is a tender and honest conversation — we talk about grief, faith, and what it looks like to keep trusting God when life doesn't turn out the way you thought it would. David offers such wise, gentle guidance, and I'm just so grateful for how he helped us put words to what can feel impossible to say. 460: MAKE IT STOP! Therapy Culture Isn't Working. Matt Chandler Unpacks Identity Confusion, The Cost of Complaining, and Killing the Safe Christianese Jargon

There's a way to sound spiritually mature while staying completely unformed, and therapy culture is helping people do just that. This week on Win Today, Matt Chandler joins us to confront the drift we're experiencing: where therapy culture replaces repentance, where identity confusion isn't grieved, and where safe Christian jargon sounds right but does nothing to transform the soul. We talk about why discipleship doesn't always feel safe. Why comfort doesn't heal—it sedates. And how complaining isn't just venting; it's forming your view of God. Matt names the thin theology that's left people chasing emotional relief instead of spiritual formation. This conversation doesn't throw stones at therapy. But it does confront what happens when comfort becomes your gospel and language becomes your liturgy. If you've traded formation for slogans, been discipled more by feelings than by truth, or confused Christian language with actual obedience, this conversation isn't just timely—it's necessary. We want God to come through, but on our terms. We demand ease, favor, instant breakthrough, and validation, and when those expectations aren't met, we call it a trial. But what if the real trial is our refusal to lay down our entitlement? This week on Win Today, bestselling author Gary Thomas pulls no punches. He exposes the modern lie that faith means personal fulfillment, that comfort means favor, and that hardship means failure. And he shows how distraction is more than a bad habit—it's a spiritual breakdown. Because when the soul loses its focus, bitterness, offense, and relational dysfunction are not far behind. If you've ever felt spiritually entitled, subtly bitter, or confused about why you're still offended by things you “moved past,” this conversation is for you. This isn't about self-help. This is about becoming whole—from the inside out. So many of us have walked through unexpected seasons of grief and loss. When those seasons hit, it feels impossible to know how to put one foot in front of the other or we don't know how to best support our friends through it. Today we answer, “What do I do when my season suddenly shifts?” Kate and I met a couple of months ago when I was on the road for a speaking event. She has walked through the tragic death of her adult son and has SO generously agreed to share with us what she wished someone had shared with her when that pain was fresh. Whether you've dealt with a similar situation or you're close to someone who has, I encourage you to lean in to the perspective and encouragement Kate shares with us about what it looks like to honor and grieve and keep living and keep loving even when we don't think we have it in us. If you're following along in your TSF Seasons Guidebook, we're on page 92 (*we moved this date*). The guidebook is available for you at anniefdowns.com/seasons.
