Chef Nomu Reeves joined us to share her story and path to owning Le Sel Catering & Events. Chef Reeves grew up experiencing life from many different cultures and cuisines, and that exposure opened her to a love of the culinary industry with all of its flavors! Later in life, she started out cooking savory items and working inside the kitchens of some prestigious restaurateurs. At some point she switched her focus to become a pastry chef, and eventually turned back to the delights of the savory side of things. Years later her path led her to opening Le Sel Catering & Events, and she has been growing her business ever since!https://www.leselcatering.comDecio Mendes began opening 21 Locks Brewing Company in 2017, and has taken steps along the way to refine the brewery, cafe, and event space to reflect everything that he wants his business to be. Though it has taken longer than he had expected, the first-time business owner is elated on how 21 Locks Brewing is turning out and Decio is equally as excited to share all the details too! Currently his operating hours fall on the weekend, but this May he's expanding those hours and would love for you to visit and experience everything he's got brewing up--from scratch-made foods, to house-roasted coffees, and yes...beers he brewed that are on one of his 24 taps!https://21locksbrewing.comColin Dyckman of Boro Cafe Gelateria Patisserie has a deep connection with all things related to the culinary industry, and shares that love through his lattes, pastries, and gelatos. His cafe & gelateria is equally evident of his love of the industry; Boro Cafe's walls are proudly displaying he & his wifes ventures in the industry. There are pots & pans, displays, and so much more that have just as much of a story to tell as the beverages and foods that Chef Colin's expert hands have crafted. Are you seeking to adopt consistent habits? Despite consuming several habit-formation resources like Charles Duhigg's Power of Habits, James Clear's Atomic Habits, or Tiny Habits by B.J. Fogg, consistency may still feel elusive. If this resonates with you, this episode discusses a concept called "empowered habits." Empowered habits is an innovative approach designed to redefine habit formation that fosters personal growth, deep connections, and authenticity. This method challenges the conventional understanding of habits, offering a more tailored approach that's grounded in individual values and emotional well-being. This episode also explores the difference between habits, practices, routines, and rituals, and illuminates how empowered habits bridge the gap between conventional habit formation and a more intuitive and authentic approach. Through a blend of research and practical exercises, the episode proposes ways to create habits that align with our intrinsic values, build community, and strengthen emotional resilience. Beyond that, it provides an overview of how empowering habit loops encourage creativity, account for our natural energy cycles, and respect the need for flexibility. Catered specifically for high-achieving women, the episode unpacks how these empowered habits can foster meaningful growth and a fulfilling lifestyle. Whether you're a professional, a planning enthusiast, or someone seeking personal growth and balance, this episode delivers unique insights and actionable steps to help transform your life. Get ready to feel energized, enlightened, and equipped to tackle your goals in an entirely new and empowering way. Small business owners, get ready for a masterclass in effective leadership and strategic growth strategies. Why would you wait any longer to start living the lifestyle you signed up for? Michael explores our guest's entrepreneurial journey, their perspective on success, reevaluation of the industry, and the critical challenges faced during business expansion. The conversation delves into the pleasures of small business growth, essential entrepreneurial practices, and effective team-building strategies, encompassing successes, mistakes, and invaluable insights. And a snapshot of the final five Grow A Small Business Questions: According to Jarrod Nation, the hardest thing in growing a small business is trusting that you have the right product or service, allowing good people to deliver results, and building a reliable team. Building and maintaining trust in various aspects, including products, people, and processes, is crucial for successful growth. Jarrod mentioned two favorite business books: "The E-Myth" by Michael Gerber and the story of McDonald's by Ray Kroc. These books have significantly influenced his perspective on business and entrepreneurship. Jarrod Nation leverages podcasts for continuous professional development. His go-to podcasts include "Howie Games" for parallels between sports and business journeys, "The Imperfects" focusing on mental health and personal stories, and "The Financial Review" offering valuable business insights. By incorporating diverse sources, Jarrod stays informed and inspired, aligning his learning with both entrepreneurial and personal development. Jarrod Nation highlights the importance of a scoreboard for small business growth. His specific tool recommendation is "Zero," an accounting system that serves as a crucial financial management tool. This tool helps extract reports and provides insights, enabling effective decision-making for sustained business development. Reflecting on the initial days of his business journey, Jarrod Nation advises focusing on resilience, understanding that challenges are not as dire as they may seem, and building trust in people. He emphasizes the importance of persevering through difficulties, maintaining a positive mindset, and placing trust in both the product and the team. In this piece of audio mainly just to help set up the feed for the show, Rick Katschke explains the rules of The Catered Quiz...which are the following: Our guest/contestant ("conguestant") provides topics they are confident about. Two topics are selected and a quiz is created. There are two rounds of questions with this format A 10 point question and a 10 point bonus question A 20 point question A 30 point question that is a 50/50 this or that A 40 point question that has two answers each worth 20 points A 50 point question After the first two rounds with this format, there are two final questions. The first final question is called the doubler where the conguestant picks a topic and can double their current score without losing any points. The remaining topic is then used for the final question which is called The Required Risk in which the conguestant must risk at least 1 point or at most their current score.  It all makes sense when you listen to an episode of the Catered Quiz. Today's episode shines a light on a new supplement making its way into the fertility landscape. Pyrroloquinoline quinone, otherwise known as PQQ, is a redox cofactor that has been shown to stimulate the growth of new mitochondria, the cellular powerhouse where nutrients are turned into a form of energy cells can use. It is in essence, a very powerful antioxidant.  Whereas CoQ10 energizes the mitochondria, PQQ can actually help create NEW ones. This is major in reversing the effects of aging and oxidative stress. The development of sperm and egg cells is a highly complex and energy-dependent process that is supported by and requires a diverse array of micronutrients, which decline as we age and continue to consume poor-quality food. PQQ has been found to improve cell functions by stimulating growth, reducing oxidative stress (protecting cells from damage) as well as spontaneous generation of new mitochondria within aging cells. You may know that a fertility-friendly diet, eliminating smoking, minimizing alcohol, reducing stress, and engaging in fertility-friendly exercise is very important when trying to conceive, but we also know that fertility-specific supplements can be powerful allies in the fertility journey. Catered "nutraceuticals" can help you fill in nutritional gaps and provide other nutrients that are difficult to get through diet alone. Could this supplement be right for you? Tune in to get the scoop. You'll Learn: Research supporting PQQ's benefits in fertility outcomes What PQQ is and how it can be supplementedThe correlation between the mitochondria and sperm/egg qualityThanks so much for listening to our podcast! Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Even an obligate omnivore can try to eat less meat, published by Joe Rogero on July 8, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. I've seen some good posts lately about veganism and health. Here's my two cents. I'm convinced by the arguments that many animals might have conscious experiences. I'd prefer not to torture the ones that do. Unfortunately, if I adopted a fully vegan lifestyle I might well be hospitalized for malnutrition within the year. In this post I'll give an overview of how I balance nutrition, ethics, and allergy constraints, and solicit ideas for improvement. My problem I am demonstrably allergic to a startling variety of foods, including, but not limited to: Peas Celery Uncooked egg yolks Chickpeas (and derivatives like hummus) Beans (but not peanuts, which are also legumes) Not deathly allergic, but definitely my-afternoon-is-ruined allergic. A tablespoon of hummus can give me 2-4 hours of intensely distracting pain. I have also experienced an identical, though sometimes inconsistent, reaction to: Fish Soylent Shellfish Eggplant Sweet potato Cranberry sauce Butternut squash Every protein shake mix I have ever tried Several mixtures containing none of the above but some hard-to-isolate combination of ingredients You will notice that several of the items on the above lists are widely considered key sources of vital nutrients in a vegetarian or vegan diet. Coupled with my strong dislike of spicy food, a typical restaurant menu typically contains at most 1-5 entrees I can safely eat. Catered meals often hedge me out entirely. At one (non-EA) event, after listing my allergies in the RSVP, I was served a dinner plate consisting of fish, lima beans, and rice pilaf with peas and celery. Even with these honestly ridiculous constraints, I've found some cheap ways to reduce my dependence on harmfully-produced meat. Reducing harm in an omnivorous diet It's easier to cut the first half of my meat intake than the second half. Diminishing returns apply. By the same logic, two people eating half as much meat is just as good as one person eating none. Here are some things I've learned while trying to minimize the suffering my diet imposes: Tofu is a fine supplement in many dishes, and rice is a cheap and flexible staple. Green vegetables like spinach and broccoli make good additions to any diet. Nuts and many dried fruits are nutrient-rich. Also, peanuts and cashews add a nice crunchy texture to homemade rice dishes. I can also eat cooked eggs and yogurt, and I've heard some convincing arguments in favor of eggs being less harmful than chicken and dairy less harmful than beef. I'm distrustful of "cruelty-free" branding because so many standards for that kind of thing are false or misleading, but with further research I expect I could find more harm-minimizing options there too. Being allergic to fish really hurts, because I think fish probably suffer less than birds or mammals, if at all. If I could eat more fish instead of meat, I would. I could probably bring myself to eat insect-based protein if it were a) actually available where I live and b) not recognizably still a whole bug at the time. Still working on that angle. I'm tentatively excited about lab-grown meat. My wife and I did some math and determined we aren't getting enough protein in our diets, so we're stepping up meat intake overall, but it's still a significant improvement over my past eating habits. I used to cook lots of chicken. My wife can eat beans and likes them fine. We don't have to eat the same things, especially when leftovers are available. We do a lot of home cooking, buy foods that keep, and try not to waste anything. If you have other ideas for reducing diet-induced harm, please share! Conclusion Even if you can't or don't want to fully expunge meat from your diet, it's possible to signific...

One more week of creating connection. One more week to find more women. Who I have just been searching for a community to join after finding out that they can't become a mom. Know that I come here every week with so much excitement in my heart and so much desire to really create that connection that I so wanted at this point where you might be in your journey  know that you're not alone, and know that if you are just finding connection for the first time, you're not too late to get into a point in your life where you can truly thrive and feel fulfilled even though you didn't have the children that you always dream. Beth. before we get started, I want to let you know that tickets for the others day brunch are on sale. I'm just floored by the amount of tickets that we have sold already and how many people who bought tickets this year that came last year, which is just proof that this is an event that is like no other in an opportunity to create connections with women who are feeling lost or sadness or disconnection around the Mother's Day holiday. Maybe it's because they weren't able to have the children that they always dreamed of. Or maybe you're missing your mom this year. Maybe you can't be with your mom this year, or maybe you never had a mother figure in your life.  If that is you, the other's day brunch is going on in Chicago on May 13th from noon until 3:00 PM Central Time. Catered by one of Chicago's premier chefs. All you have to do is show.  and be ready to have an awesome, awesome three hours. And who knew that the day before Mother's Day, you could actually not be wanting to be curled up on a blanket on the sofa in your bed, feeling isolated. All these things that we have spent way too much time feeling because we were not able to have the children we always dreamed of.  I hope that you can join. Tickets are on sale at lanamankowski.com/othersday. Or if you go into my stories, on Instagram, you can probably find a lot of information there because my assistance are out there. Just trying to create as much awareness for you so that you can have a beautiful year this year around Mother's Day.  I'm gonna transition a little bit about something that has been coming up with my students and  folks that I have been talking to outside of my coaching community who are feeling very overwhelmed by how fast life seems to be going. And I don't mean the days, I don't mean the years when you look on a calendar, but I mean all these things that are going on in life. Are creating this feeling for you that you just always need to catch up. That there's always just something more for you to do. Something that at the end of the day, there's just one more thing that you're thinking I wish I would have done.  There's just a heightened level of feeling, of just chasing your tail. Like chasing yourself in circles and just feeling like you're not caught up. And so many people have been experiencing this, and so I thought I would talk about it this week on episode 79 of the podcast. So if you can relate, tune right in. Let's talk about how we can slow things down for ourselves in our minds so that we're not always, and you're not always feeling like you are constantly. Fearing that you might drop the ball on something or that you might not get that one thing done that you thought was so important to do and, and you lay in bed at night and you think, oh my gosh, I've gotta remember to do that first thing in the morning. And then first thing in the morning comes, and then the whole flurry of other things shows up for you. So I'm gonna offer you some opportunity to maybe create a little sense of calmness. In your life by doing these few things it is  something that has really, really been helpful for me . I don't know if it's increased connection because of this new cellular era that you're always on your phone or you're always accessible or you're always maybe checking work emails and there's always something that's coming into your mind and adding on to your to-do.  When you wake up in the morning, I'm gonna give you a few pointers of what you might be able to do to create a little bit of clarity for yourself.  This is something I call a brain dump.  When you do a brain dump in the morning, you are getting everything out of your mind onto a piece of paper that has to be done. Now you can do this daily. Some people might wanna start out doing this weekly. And when you get all these things out of your mind and onto paper, you're giving yourself in your brain just a little bit of breathing room, and your brain doesn't need to constantly feel like it's in high stress mode because you might forget something because what you're doing is writing it down and you're giving the brain some opportunity to  release this grasp. It has on this task that it's afraid that you might. , and now that it's on paper, you might not feel as much anxiousness about remembering all those things.  Find five minutes every morning and just brain dump all the things that have been looming, either from yesterday or the day before or something that you woke up thinking or maybe looked at your calendar and thought, oh, I gotta remember to do this before this meeting, or I have to remember to call this person, or I have to remember. To buy a birthday present or send a birthday card for this person. So literally, it doesn't have to be just work things or a specific genre of things. It could just be anything that is looming in your mind when you write it down. It's giving yourself a little bit of freedom to let go of that thought. And then you're gonna go through the list and you're gonna choose three things. What are three things that are imperative that you accomplish? Could be anything, could be one of the easiest things or one of the things that you've been putting off because it's been taking a lot of brain power. Circle those things. Make sure that those are the things that you prioritize first thing for the day, and that you make sure that no matter what happens when you close up for the day or go to bed for the night, you can confidently have chosen three things to have finished off your list.  and you're gonna start to create evidence for yourself that if you let your mind breathe by putting these tasks out on paper and you pick just three things,  simple to complex up to you, and you prove to yourself every day that you're able to accomplish at least three things, your mind is gonna start to feel less clogged with things to. You're gonna stop feeling like you're always in this circle of worrying that you're gonna forget something or worried that you might drop the ball on something or that something that was so important you just had to do, you won't have to worry about forgetting these things because you're doing a daily check-in with yourself.  Then at the end of the day, take a look at your list. , you know that you accomplished those three things. If you're anything like me, you might like to check it off your list or put a, a line through it just to say it's done and then look at the other things. Maybe without even thinking, have accomplished more things on your list. So start to cross those things off and then decide what do you wanna keep on your list for? So before you go to bed for the night, or before you say close down your computer or your laptop for the day, start to create your list for tomorrow. Take anything that you didn't get to that was on that list today and put it on tomorrow's list. And then when you wake up in the morning, your brain is gonna not be in panic mode to have to remember a huge laundry list because you're just gonna have this continuous.  that is ever changing and ever growing and diminishing and allowing you to feel accomplished because you're gonna have some sort of plan for yourself. So if you're feeling very overwhelmed, I recommend  you take this practice and maybe start by doing it twice a week, once a week, whatever feels comfortable for you. But when you start somewhere and start to build evidence for yourself, you'll see it's not really that.  and that your body can finally feel like it can breathe again because  definitely there are so many of my students who are feeling very overwhelmed right now and just feeling like there's just this whirlwind of things to. I appreciate that. There are days that I feel that way too, and I love that I have these opportunities to share these practices with you that you can try in your own daily life. And I truly wanna know what did you think about it? Was it helpful to you? Let me know. I, loved getting comments,  in dms. I. Getting reviews about the podcast, how does it help you? What do you wanna hear more of? What do you need to hear more of in order to create a life that you can thrive and feel fulfilled even though you didn't have the children you always dreamed of? So, have a beautiful week. Know that I love you. Don't forget to get your tickets to the other's day, May 13th. And remember, it is never too late to discover your meaning. I'll talk to you next week.
