On this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with Matt Mundy to discuss his incredible musical journey, which is deeply rooted in family heritage and a love for bluegrass. We dive into the evolution of bluegrass music, breaking down the role of various instruments and how academic influences have helped shape modern sounds.Matt opens up about his early years in music, playing with family, and the joy of making music together. He also shares some memorable stories, including his experiences playing with Wendy Bagwell and his later transition to working with Bruce Hampton and the Aquarium Rescue Unit. We talk about the significance of rhythm in bluegrass, the importance of being a team player, and how the lessons he learned from his bandmates helped shape his playing style. We even discuss some of Matt's collaborations with well-known musicians like Bela Fleck, the rise of jam bands, and how he handles performance anxiety—a common challenge for so many in the music world. Today, we're beyond thrilled to share our conversation with the legendary Reverend Jeff Mosier. A pioneering force in the jam band and bluegrass scenes, Jeff's journey through music is nothing short of inspirational. Our bond with Jeff dates back to the late 80s when we lived together and explored the depths of bluegrass. It was Jeff who opened our eyes to the African roots of the banjo and the rich cultural tapestry of bluegrass music. He's not just a musician; he's a storyteller, weaving the history and soul of bluegrass into every note he plays. In this episode, we dive deep into Jeff's incredible musical career. From his early days with Colonel Bruce Hampton and the Aquarium Rescue Unit to his groundbreaking work with Blueground Undergrass, Jeff's journey is a testament to his pioneering spirit. He's shared stages with icons like Bela Fleck, Peter Rowan, Vassar Clements, and even taught the legendary band Phish a thing or two about bluegrass. But Jeff's impact goes beyond his musical collaborations. Our conversations reveal a man deeply connected to the spiritual and philosophical aspects of music, making this one of our favorite and most profound episodes yet. Tune in for a journey through the life of a musician who's not just played history but lived it. Don't miss this incredible episode – it's a deep dive into the soul of music and life itself! You won't find many bass players on the jam band scene more respected than Oteil Burbridge. He's best known for his time in The Allman Brothers Band, where he served from 1997 until the group ended their storied career in 2014. Before that, Burbridge was in the Aquarium Rescue Unit, a group founded by former wrestling manager Colonel Bruce Hampton that was known for blending top-tier musicianship with freewheeling fun. After The Allman Brothers, Burbridge formed Dead & Company with John Mayer, Jeff Chimenti, and Grateful Dead alums Bob Weir, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann. This summer, they embarked on their last tour. Burbridge's latest project is Dead-adjacent: An album of eight ballads written by Robert Hunter and Jerry Garcia called Lovely View Of Heaven. You can hear his jazz influence all over the record, and I have to say his singing is on point as well. Burbridge has been performing these songs with his group Oteil & Friends. Burbridge is usually on the hosting end of the podcast - he has his own called Comes a Time - but here he joins me to take us through the album and offer some incredible insights on the Hunter/Garcia songwriting team. https://www.oteilburbridge.com/ https://www.songfacts.com/ https://www.facebook.com/songfacts https://twitter.com/Songfacts http://pantheonpodcasts.com/ https://twitter.com/pantheonpods Hosted and Edited by Corey O'Flanagan https://twitter.com/ofe1818 https://www.instagram.com/coreyofe/ corey@songfacts.com Songfacts Podcast Spotify Playlist https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3IThMW5yB8XnFh5cS2gTxR?si=KAhiqWRcSIy5uxb2sZPFTA This show is part of Pantheon Podcasts. Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing The Neverlutionaries' over Zoom video/audio! The Neverlutionaries' self-titled debut LP album is an unfiltered expression of the heart that seamlessly straddles moods and genres. The brainchild of multi-instrumentalist songwriter Christopher Harold Wells and bound by his distinctively soulful timbre, the eponymous eight-song release tints hook-laden alternative rock with psychedelia, shoegaze-y jazz, and subtle funk.Having originally made his name in the vibrant North Carolina music scene (notably with Peasants of the Apocalypse), Wells has been performing, recording and producing in San Francisco for the last few years. As well as songwriter, he‟s also an exceptional melodic rock vocalist, bassist and guitarist. Wells currently divides his time between SF and Nashville.Testament to Wells‟ stylistic versatility and open-mindedness is a resume that includes playing in The All Time Low Stars with Peter Keys of Lynyrd Skynyrd; working with everyone from Lauryn Hill to Bubba Sparxxx; and opening for the diverse likes of Metallica, Aquarium Rescue Unit and Def Leppard. Not one to chase trends, his music has always been hard to pigeonhole. His influences include everything from the church choirs of his youth, to Rush and Tool; Kaskade and The Cure, to The Mars Volta, Massive Attack, and even Joy Division. But he reserves perhaps most respect for artists like Prince and Jimmy Page, who‟ve mingled multiple genres while maintaining the essence of their expression. The Neverlutionaries comprises a core line-up of regulars at San Fran‟s legendary Hyde Street Studios, augmented by an all-star cast of guest players. Constants are SF staple and frequent Wells collaborator Chris McGrew of Pamela Parker‟s Fantastic Machine on drums; fellow Fantastic Machiner Ryan Hickey on keys; and former Psychefunkapus guitarist Jonnie Axtell. For future touring, blazing Nashville six-stringer Kenny Olson (Bootsy Collins, Sheryl Crow etc.) and original Brian Jonestown Massacre member Ricky Maymi are tapped to join them.Helmed by #1 Billboard charting producer Jaimeson Durr (Sammy Hagar, Joe Satriani etc.), The Neverlutionaries was recorded in Hyde Street‟s storied Studio C, where classic albums by the Grateful Dead, Santana, and Creedence Clearwater Revival were cut. The LP is preceded by otherworldly balladin-waiting, “Ariana”.In a modern music landscape choked with bands making music to match commercial expectations, The Neverlutionaries mark a refreshing return to simply, yet expertly, just doing what feels and sounds right, free of creative margins.“Ariana” will be accompanied by a music video in late October, with Neverlutionaries live-stream events and – once safe to do so – touring planned to further support their debut LP. The Neverlutionaries‟ selftitled debut was just released by Polychromatic Records on January 21, 2021We want to hear from you! As we reach the midway point of season three, we dig into the mail bag for our topic this week. A while back we received listener email requesting a show that focused on the business of home recording. Immediately Jon and I knew this would be the perfect show to include a third mic guest. There’s no one better to fill that spot than our mutual friend, recording ace, and Nashville denizen, Sean O’Rourke. Sean has performed with some of the music industry’s biggest names. A partial list includes: Sugarland, Aquarium Rescue Unit, Mother’s Finest, Derek Trucks, Jerry Ragavoy, Oteil Burbridge, and Arrested Development. In this episode we call upon Sean’s 20+ years of traditional studio and in-home recording experience to answer some questions. We cover what gear it takes to make a basic home studio functional along with upgrades that may make a big difference. Sean talks about the importance of signal path, the different room treatments he’s experimented with and what works best for recording drums. We then discuss dealing with clients, what materials they should provide, charts, cues, and session set up. We then talk about finishing the session, getting the tracks approved, different audio formats, delivering the tracks, and getting paid. Finally we discuss the proliferation of online studio musicians and what you can do to help separate yourself from the pack. Check out Sean and his studio by visiting his site at: http://seanorourke.com/ Sean also has a YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/seanorourke Here is Sean's Soundcloud account: https://soundcloud.com/seanorourke Please visit our website at: www.drummersweeklygroovecast.com There you can listen to our shows, interact with our social media, email us, view our videos and more. Seth and Rob sit down with Jeff Coffin backstage at The Tabernacle in Atlanta just before Jeff was going to join Umphrey's McGee for portions of the final two shows of that band's New Year's run there. Coffin delights the hosts by talking about how hearing Colonel Bruce Hampton and the Aquarium Rescue Unit on the way to the grocery store one afternoon completely changed his view of music. Jeff relates how after a chance encounter with Victor Wooten, Jeff ended up going to see Bela Fleck and The Flecktones in Aspen. Jeff would learn at setbreak that thanks to drummer Tom Pollard, Bela was already, "Coffin aware." A relationship developed quickly and soon Coffin found himself playing a gig with The Flecktones in Vermont, after which Bela surprised Jeff by asking him to join the band on a more permanent basis. We learn about how Coffin began sitting in with Dave Matthews Band, and then how at one point he had to scramble to help them out when tragedy hit the band just hours before tour. Jeff effusively reports about how consistently welcoming the entire band was to him, and we learn of (and hear) how years later the band negotiated their way through the beginning of "Ants Marching" the first time they played it after losing another key band member. Coffin elaborates on other awkward on-stage moments that have happened with DMB, although on balance the band is of course doing quite well. In fact, DMB had an incredibly strong 2018 with the release of its 7th consecutive #1-debuting record the (the first band to EVER pull that off) and their ability to continue to hit new peaks as a live act after all of these years. A discussion of "The Space Between" leads to Coffin elaborating on the importance of listening....in music....and in life. We also learn about how teaching as changed him as a musician and as a person and he talks about the thought process early this decade that lead to him starting his label, Ear Up Records. As Turner elaborated upon in the intro, this label brings forth a variety of records featuring brilliant, and in some cases lesser-known musicians, aeach schemed in very clever and unique fashion. Jeff goes into detail about a few of these - including how he brought the legendary Dave Liebman down to Nashville for a bunch of gigs, one of which would lead to the superb "On The Corner Live: The Music of Miles Davis" release. Jeff reveals how this was essentially recorded surreptitiously. The episode outtro includes Seth's reports from some of the destination festivals he has been working, and Rob talks about the music-packed weekend he had just had including a fantastic triple bill of Liz Cooper + The Stampede/New Madrid/The Artisanals. In the snowy mountains of rural, western North Carolina Jeff Sipe (Apt. Q-258) resides. You may know him from his tenure with acts such as, John McLaughlin, Jimmy Herring, Leftover Salmon, Col. Bruce Hampton, Jazz Is Dead, and Shawn Lane/Jonas Hellborg. However most know him from the group that gained him his initial popularity, Aquarium Rescue Unit. To finish out our second season Jeff agreed to talk to us about all of the above including his current gigs and the publishing of his new method book, “Rhythm Patterns for Drum Set”. Stories. Everyone likes to hear them and many musicians have colorful tales about being on the gig. If you look at Sipe’s past credentials you’ll quickly recognize that he’ll have plenty to offer in that category. We start with how he received the moniker, ‘Apt. Q-258’. We also spend a good bit of time discussing his upbringing abroad and how it fostered his love for music. Jeff also tells great stories about his time in Boston and attending the Berklee College of Music. One of the stories revolves around his friendship with guitarist, Steve Vai, and being present during Steve’s ‘transcription phase’ prior to his tenure with Frank Zappa. Jeff then talks about his departure from Boston and subsequent arrival in Atlanta. From there he tells of how a chance meeting with Bruce Hampton ultimately led to a long relationship with the legendary performance artist. From there we go through the lexicon of his gigs including the formation of the Aquarium Rescue Unit and the bands that followed. We finish up talking about his current teaching studio including a description of his new method book. As always, we end the show by putting Jeff through the obstacle course that is the DWG Rorschach Test. Jeff wants you to stay abreast of his upcoming gigs. Please go by his web site at: www.jeffsipemusic.com There you can find out where he’s performing and check out his new method book, “Rhythm Patterns for Drum Set”. Seth and Rob talk about Leftover Salmon’s stripped-down tour this autumn, during part one of two in an Inside Out wTnS series on the band. Drew Emmitt elaborated on a variety of topics backstage at the Hampton 70 event earlier this year at the Fox Theatre, during which he correctly predicts the overwhelming nature of the night that lay before him and an all-star cast. Emmitt talks about meeting the Col. and touring with the Aquarium Rescue Unit, how Vince Herman can sometimes “turn into Bruce for a while” and how the COl. taught Leftover Salmon to toss away preconceived notions and play from their soul, instead of their mind. Drew also discusses a more creative touring schedule in 2018, how Salmon evolved while touring with Bill Payne and Jeff Sipe, and recording in Nashville with Waylon Jennings, Earl Scruggs and John Bell. Fans of Hot Tuna, Neil Young and Phish will enjoy his stories of collaborations with each artist. wTnS is Produced by Rob Turner and Engineered by Josh Thane of Wonder Dog Sounds Studio. Presented by PRS GUITARS, this episode finds us in Atlanta talking and jamming with the great JIMMY HERRING. Beloved for his powerful solos and humble nature alike, Herring has played with several of the world's top "jam" artists, including Col. Bruce Hampton and the Aquarium Rescue Unit, Phil Lesh, the Dead, Project Z, and the Allman Brothers Band. Currently, Herring enjoys his long-running gig as lead guitarist with Widespread Panic—the band that has set the record for most sell-outs ever at Colorado's famed Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Throughout this interview, Jimmy has his PRS NF3 guitar in his hands, so he can show you musical concepts and passages that are meaningful to him ... and so he can jam! Catch Jimmy Herring on tour this summer with his band, Jimmy Herring and the Invisible Whip, or this fall, when he'll be playing concert halls with his hero, John McLaughlin. The McLaughling/Herring tour is called The Meeting of the Spirits, and it starts November 1. I hope you enjoy this in-depth hang and jam with with one of guitar's very best improvisors. And after listening, you'll surely be a better improvisor yourself. —JUDE GOLD Host, No Guitar Is Safe podcast.
This week we take a moment to say farewell to a man who has touched and influenced so many in our scene, Colonel Bruce Hampton, Ret. He has often been referred to as a "godfather of the jam scene," and he was respected and loved by so many. He was a leader of the jamband scene, as it grew from the clubs of the late 80s and spawned H.O.R.D.E. in the early 90s and through to today. He passed surrounded by loved ones, friends, and fans, doing what he did for so long, introducing the unexpected into music. Whether it be the Hampton Grease Band, Aquarium Rescue Unit, Fiji Mariners, the Code Talkers, or playing Trombone with Phis, he provoked his fellow players to circumvent the obvious and inspired them to rise to ever greater heights. This episode focuses on the intersections of Col. Bruce and Phish, of course, and also some other music (see below). A few other things: please give us input into our survey about how Phish has impacted your life. We have some good ideas for what to do with this stuff, so get your submission in! August 28, 2016: In this episode I get to talk with one of my all-time favorite drummers, Jeff Sipe. I've been a fan of Jeff's since 1994, when I first heard him with Col. Bruce Hampton and The Aquarium Rescue Unit. Since then I've been able to see his trio live, have seen him perform with Jeff Coffin's Mu'tet on numerous occasions and have even been able to perform with Jeff Sipe for the Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration featuring Warren Haynes. In this episode Jeff talks about his early drum lessons in Germany, playing on a cutting board during his first lesson, why there is no background music in his world, how a jazz competition award in high school changed his perspective, and why he considers teaching a sacred thing.
OTEIL BURBRIDGE Oteil Burbridge is one of the most respected bass players on the Southern music scene. He is an original member of the cult band Aquarium Rescue Unit led my Col. Jimmy Herring circa 1994In the spring of 1994 the Grateful Dead were still touring, I got married and began my graduate studies at DePaul University. Working full-time in the printing and publications department of my alma mater and going to school full time left me with little time for live music or much of a social life. But in the summer of 1994, all I had to do was work full time... and take some of my precious earned vacation time to see some music. After 25 years of actively seeking out live musical experiences, the summer of 1994 stands out as a highlight. In particular, the ten day period of July 14 - 24, 1994 stands out as one of the most ambitious musical experiences of my life.Thursday 7/14/94 - work 9 - 5, Widespread Panic, The Vic (Aquarium Rescue Unit opened)Friday 7/15/94 - work 9 - 5Saturday 7/16/94 drive 5.5 hours to Ames, IA - Widespread Panic, People's Bar and GrillSunday 7/17/94 - drive back to ChicagoMonday 7/18/94 - work 9 - 5, 3 hour drive to the Riverbend Campground outside of Noblesville, IN.Tuesday 7/19/94 - Grateful Dead, Deer Creek AmpitheatreWednesday 7/20/94 - Grateful Dead, Deer Creek AmpitheatreThursday 7/21/94 - Grateful Dead, Deer Creek AmpitheatreFriday 7/22/94 - drive back to Chicago, celebrate birthday at Martyrs'Saturday 7/23/94 - Grateful Dead, Soldier Field, ChicagoSunday 7/24/94 - Grateful Dead, Soldier Field, Chicago5 Dead shows, 2 Panic shows and 3 full days of work in 11 days. But you are here to hear about Widespread Panic. That July 14th show at the Vic was originally scheduled for a larger venue, the newly opened Skyline Stage on Navy pier. But Peter Frampton used his own PA a couple of weeks earlier which led to the venue not allowing Widespread to use their PA.... I'll add that this change in venue happened after the band and crew had arrived in the early morning of July 14 to set the stage.Several dozen people were turned away at the door of the Vic because of overcrowding and the air conditioning failed before the band even hit the stage. The Aquarium Rescue Unit (without Col. Bruce but with Kofi Burbridge on keys and flute and Paul Henson on vocals) opened for Panic. I wonder if Jimmy Herring ever had a sense of deja vu when sharing the stage with Widespread Panic? Or perhaps being in the Aquarium Rescue Unit was like LIVING in deja vu!I featured the final two songs and the encore of Panic's one set show back in PaniCast #4....PaniCast #4 - Sweating to July 14, 1994 The Vic Theatre, Chicago. This week I bring you the opening of the first set up through the drum break in Papa's Home.I've also added a couple of great radio studio performances from 1993 and some silly interviews...July 14, 1994The Vic TheatreChicago, IL(set one opener)Heroes >Weight of the World,PilgrimsPorch SongMay 3, 1993KTCZ 97.1 StudiosMinneapolis, MNInterviewWonderingJuly 14, 1994 continuesLittle Kin,It Ain't No Use >Travelin' LightMay 10, 1993WDET 101.9 FMDetroit, MIInterviewHenry Parsons DiedJuly 14, 1994 continuesJunior,Stop-Go >Papa's HomeJuly 14, 1994 Aquarium Rescue Unit (opening for Widespread Panic)Vic TheatreChicago, ILFixin' to Die(calling out to 'Garrie' during the song... same Garrie?)Jimmy Herring on guitarOteil Burbridge on bass/vocalsApartment Q258 on drumsKofi Burbridge on keys/flutePaul Henson on vocalsLISTENER'S GUIDE:7/14/94Listen how Weight of the World starts with Dave melodically driving the song forward until Mikey takes control and leads into the third verse. This allows DAS to switch to a percussive slap bass technique, nearly teasing 'We Want the Funk....' at one point. The Pilgrims intro is so mellow, almost like they backing into the song. Feeling confident and conversational in the way they are playing.... - and so we listen, and if it's real good, and we shake. And then Houser takes a solo and the heat is on!Check out the jam that begins about 5 and a half minutes into Ain't No Use.... soaring, triumphant, lovely. And again around the 5 and a half minute mark in Papa's Home a graceful and confident jam. Houser's leads are reminiscent of a yet-to-be-written Surprise Valley.5/3/93 and 5/10/93Being asked by radio DJs about being from Athens and REM must've gotten old and you can't blame JB Jack the Jester for trying to have a little fun with them in the process.
