Mad Sky julkaisee debyyttialbuminsa Lion Rising toukokuussa ja julkkarikeikka nähdään legendaarisen Storyvillen lauteilla pe 23.5.2025. Bändi nojaa vahvasti 70-lukulaiseen southern/hard rock/blues rock perinteeseen. Mad Skyn nokkamies on pitkästä selostajaurastaan MTV Sportilla ja Canal+:lla tunnettu Taikku Taivainen alias Mad Jay Skywalker. Keikkarumpaliksi valikoitui monissa liemissä keitetty vuoden 2007 Idols-voittaja Ari Koivunen. Albumilla rummuissa kuullaan Anton Nisosta (mm. Fear of Domination, Pahan Ikoni, Vetten Äpärät). Bassoa soittaa mm. Pyhä Yrjänästä tutuksi tullut Kimmo Koivunen ja toisessa kitarassa on lahtelainen Tommi Suuronen (mm. Eka Kerta, Toka Kerta). Sami Ruokangas ja Juha Kakkuri jututtivat Mad Sky -bändin Taikkua ja Aria levyn julkaisun alla. Jutuissa mennään Mad Skyn tyylistä ja vaikutteista yleisempään livemusiikin ainutlaatuiseen taikaan ja vaaran tunteeseen. Whilst sifting through old drives for B-Roll for another video I found this old overhead shot of me working on a Till Brönner transcription from a few years back. Obviously I don't set up the camera and makes videos like this every time I transcribe something, but I do make a habit of transcribing on a regular basis. As my ear gets stronger, the material I'm transcribing tends to change. It's quite rare these days to be transcribing linear ideas for instance as I've done so much of that over the past three decades. I'm more curious now about harmony and chord voicings, and how those might work for orchestration and arrangement purposes when I'm in writing-mode. As you can hear from this very raw voice note made with my phone, I'm focusing on harmonic development for this new album I'm planning to record in Europe later in the year. I'm working towards recording the trio (possibly Jojo Mayer and Tom Cawley) in the south of Germany, and then hopping over to Sofia to record the New Bulgarian Voices on top of the trio right after. Layering elements of Jazz, European folk music, electronic music, and some of my biggest influences from the classical world like Chopin, Brahms, Messiaen, Mahler, Schubert, Ravel and Rachmaninoff, is something incredibly exciting to me. Knowing I have access to some of the greatest musicians, engineers, and studios out there gives me a lot of hope that no matter what we do in the studio, we will make music we love. And when you add in the possibilities a choir could generate… I start to get a real buzz about the project even when we're so many months away. This is a clip from my daily practice routine that I'm constantly documenting to make sure ideas aren't lost. The one recurring melody throughout this improvised clip could end up being the main theme for a choral arrangement for instance. You just never know. That's why I felt compelled to share these three things today. * The transcription clip represents where I'm coming from and the crazy amount of hours I've put into transcription and ear training over the years. * The audio clip gives you an idea of how I'm constantly making short voice notes of compositional ideas. * And the video clip is looking forward to this year's recording projects as I continue to write as much as possible every day, and get used to a new instrument so I'm in the best place possible when the red light goes on to record. As always, be sure to stream the latest album with Mark Turner, John Ellis, Gretchen Parlato, Jojo Mayer, Elliot Mason, Gregoire Maret, and Tim Miller for free wherever you listen to music. Big Fat Five: A Podcast Financially Supported by Big Fat Snare Drum

This week's guest is Jojo Mayer. I am in the midst of a project that has me going through a bunch of our past episodes (I will be announcing this project shortly and I'm super excited about it), but when I went back through the Jojo's episode, I was reminded of its importance. Jojo is mind-blowing player who helped pioneer the drum n bass movement in New York City by “reverse engineering” programmed drum loops and applying them to the drum set. He is also revered for his exceptional technique, which he dissects in the wildly-popular instructional series titled “Secret Weapons For The Modern Drummer Parts 1 & 2”. He is the leader of his own band, Nerve, which he founded back in 1997. We don't necessarily stick to the normal format in this one; Jojo is a great storyteller. We start off with a few anecdotes about a cymbal once-owned by Billy Higgins that Jojo picked up by happenstance and Jojo's time spent “studying” with Freddy Gruber, but we certainly touch on a lot of Jojo's opinions / perspectives regarding accepting influences, but knowing when they're actually a detriment to your personal growth on the instrument. He's a very philosophical man and shares quite a few nuggets of slap-you-in-the-face style wisdom. Even though this is probably one of our most-downloaded episodes over the life of the show, we've been getting a lot of new listeners and I wanted to push this towards the top because, well…it's important. I've cleaned it up a bit and put a cute lil bow in it. Stay tuned for my fun little project announcement, but in the meantime…please enjoy my chat with my esteemed guest, Jojo Mayer. He also prepared Emmy Award-winning actor Riz Ahmed for his role as a drummer in Amazon Studios film ‘Sound of Metal' where he was tasked with all aspects of the drum set instruction and preparation for the role over an intensive seven-month period, with Riz having no formal experience as a drummer. Jason is a Taiwanese classical/jazz/world music violinist, multi-instrumentalist (piano, bass, guitar, drum, erhu, cello), composer, sound designer and an electronic musician. In 2017 Jason appeared and composed music for the film “Accommodation”. He also appeared on Dream Theater's “Along for the Ride” tour and live released DVD “Breaking The Fourth Wall”. In 2015, Jason Lee toured in China with his Chinese/Jazz fusion quartet for the first time and was interviewed by Huaxia Magazine as the theme of the month- “The rising star of the music world”. And later on, went on a sold-out tour with Yo-Yo Ma's silkroad Ensemble branch project in 2018. In 2017, Tsung-Yuan join The Boulanger Lab as a musical software developer, directed by the creator of Csound computer language, Dr. Richard Boulanger. During 2018-2020 Jason was the co-leader of string revolution funk/rock band “2 Birds Band”, the great modern violin pioneer Jean-Luc Ponty has once commented on the band, “I'm glad to see young compatriots at a level that I rarely hear!”. The band is a unique strings-based ensemble with a rhythm section that explores the boundaries of violin and cello through different styles of music. Fusing classical tradition and contemporary styles, the band presents a new way of approaching strings with a sound both cultured and groovy. It has been performing and teaching clinics in Boston, New York, Toronto and France. The band has released 3 albums First Flight (2015), For Lack Of A Better World (2016) and String Groover (2017). Through recent years, Tsung-Yuan (Jason) Lee has worked and performed with many renowned musicians from modern jazz innovators such as, 4-time Grammy winner Terence Blanchard; 2-time Grammy winner Jacob Collier; modern drummer Jojo Mayer; Mark Guiliana, modern guitarist David Fiuczynski, to King of Chinese Pop Lee Hom Wang; to classical musicians including 4-time grammy winner Eugene Friesen; grammy-winning Yo-Yo Ma's Silkroad Ensemble, to Hollywood Oscar nominated composer AR Rahma, progressive rock band Dream Theater; electronic music composer Robert Rich; oud master Simon Shaheen and suona master Yazhi Guo. This week's episode is nothing but good vibes. We've got Carson Gant aka @oneupdrumvids on the show. Carson's ability to recreate classic loops and drum breaks on the acoustic kit is unmatched, but not so much in the vein of Jojo Mayer, Adam Betts, or Richard Spaven (which I know I've described in a similar way), Carson focused more on the slower, hip-hop style grooves that might SEEM a little more approachable in comparison to the drummers I just mentioned, but ohhhhh no. Believe me, there are a lot of nuances within a groove that are only exposed at a slower tempo…at least in comparison to drum n bass. This has been a long time coming because Carson has been a busy little Canadian bee launching a website providing different take on the classic loop library system called oneupdrumvids.com which we also talk about during the show. My guest this week is Mr. Jojo Mayer…a mind-blowing player who helped pioneer the drum n bass movement in New York City by “reverse engineering” programmed drum loops and applying them to the drum set. He is also revered for his exceptional technique, which he dissects in the wildly-popular instructional series titled “Secret Weapons For The Modern Drummer Parts 1 & 2”. He is also the leader of his own band, Nerve, which he founded back in 1997. He's a very philosophical man and he shares quite a few nuggets of slap-you-in-the-face style wisdom.

This week’s interview was an absolute treat for me as I got to sit down and talk bass with one of my heroes, the incredible bass guitar virtuoso Janek Gwizdala. Janek has toured and recorded with modern jazz legends such as Mike Stern, Randy Brecker, Bob Reynolds, JoJo Mayer and released multiple albums as a solo artist. He’s also a high profile educator and author with a huge online presence both through Youtube and his website. As a player, Janek is simply incredible both as a traditional groove player and as an improvising soloist. From a soloing standpoint, Janek has developed a beautifully lyrical style of playing and in this interview I delve into how he was able to nurture such a highly developed vocabulary on the instrument. We also talk in depth about practice in general, the value of transcription and the impact of social media on modern music. Stir Crazy With Steve Jenkins: Conversations With Creatives During The Quarantine

This week’s guest is Teddy Kumpel. Teddy is an amazing guitar player who lives in Brooklyn. He’s worked with people like Joe Jackson (he been in his touring band for the last few years), Rickie Lee Jones, Phil Lesh, Feist, Marshall Crenshaw, and a ton of other folks. He also has played on soundtracks to movies well all love like Anchorman, Talladega Nights, and he’s also a great engineer.Teddy and I became friends sometime back 2013. He had this cool weekly residency at Rockwood Music Hall between 2011 and 2018 where he did this thing called the Loopestra. Basically, it was Teddy, his guitar, his voice and some looping equipment and he’d have a different rhythm section every week. There were no rehearsals. The idea was just to play. It was awesome to hear great bass players like Tim Lefebvre, Andy Hess, James Genus, Jonathan Maron, Fima Ephron, and great drummers like Aaron Comess, Shawn Pelton, Jojo Mayer, Aaron Steel, Josh Dion do their thing in the context of Teddy’s Loopestra.I had the honor of doing 2 of them. Many of those gigs are on YouTube. It’s a goldmine of stuff to check out.Teddy and I spoke a couple of weeks ago and here’s how our conversation went.

Stir Crazy With Steve Jenkins: Conversations With Creatives During The Quarantine

This week I’m talking to the amazing guitarist David Fiuczynski (or as he’s known by many, Fuze). The first time I heard Fuze was on the Meshell N’degeocello song “Soul Record” which is the first song off of her first album “plantation lullabies” where he takes this blazing guitar solo. (Play that solo) As a bass player, that album was already a big deal to me but I was a fan of the Fuze’s guitar playing from then on. I soon heard Lunar Crush which was a record that Fuze made with John Medeski and it would feature Screaming Headless Torsos members Fima Ephron, Jojo Mayer who plays drums on some of it and Gene Lake who also plays drums on some of it. And then, of course Fuze is known as the guitarist and bandleader of Screaming Headless Torsos which is a genre-smashing band that mixes funk/jazz/avant garde/free jazz/gospel/electronic music and everything in between. He’s also worked with people like Ronald Shannon Jackson, Bernie Worrell, Stewart Copeland, Hiromi, Billy Hart, Jack Dejohnette, and many others.

“Technique is just legwork. It’s not a paradigm shift for the most part.” This interview with Jojo was the last interview that I recorded during the Drumeo Festival in 2020. The night prior to this interview was when NERVE closed the festival with a tremendous performance that blew the minds of the audience in attendance. I have been listening to NERVE since early on, in fact, it was the Prohibited Beats album where I discovered them with the incredible tune “Far”.  Prohibited Beats was the first NERVE album release but there were also major parties that Jojo hosted in NYC that he called “Prohibited Beatz”. At the Drumeo VIP dinner he shared that entire story of how he was no longer allowed to host these parties, as people well into the thousands would attend. Look up what the “Cabaret Law” is for some nice casual reading. It was that among other contributing factors that forced Jojo to stop the Prohibited Beatz parties.  Jojo Mayer is a very creative and ingenuitive musician. It has been commented on many times before that Jojo possesses very high technical abilities both in his hands and feet. He broke all of this technique down in his two highly acclaimed instructional Hudson Music DVD’s “Secret Weapons for the Modern Drummer”. The first release was dedicated to hand technique and the second release was for feet. Combined, these DVD’s covered everything you’d ever need to know about technique. There is no question that Jojo Mayer is among the greatest drummers of all time and has been incredibly influential in music and the arts.   You Will Hear About…. The message, “you can’t do that” and how Jojo basically ignored that. How New York isn’t matching the creative output it used to produce. Whether a musician who hasn’t struggled as much is missing something musically? Jojo on “Rock n’ Roll”. Jojo on technique. Jojo is concerned about the safety and prosperity of mankind.   Why Should You Listen? Jojo is obviously an expert musician and I love his music but his interviews are always interesting too. His thoughts about society, art, culture and beyond always have an enlightening edge to them. Speaking for myself, I find the words he speaks to be almost as enjoyable as the music he performs. Much like Frank Zappa in that regard. I am very happy to have had the opportunity to have one on one time with a hero of mine and to have captured something of value for listeners.   Jojo’s Socials Patreon Instagram Facebook Twitter Website   Follow ‘Drumeo Gab’ Instagram Facebook

As a little girl, she took piano lessons, but ultimately, went on to try out for drum corps in her hometown in upper Michigan. She was one of two girls there. How she hears rhythms in everyday activities, even when she is climbing stairs or driving! She tells us how the idea that she "looks like a librarian” and other factors may have kept her from being hired to play in rock bands. She did not let anything hold her back from finding opportunities to showcase her drumming. She played in bands and posted instructional videos on Instagram and YouTube. She was discovered on Instagram by Drumeo and was invited to Vancouver to film a cover of the metal song “Down with the Sickness” by Disturbia. She delivered a powerful message - “Don't judge a drummer or anybody by their looks.” By delivering that message, she has been an inspiration to many aspiring drummers.Dorothea also teaches online and she even taught a nearly 90 year old man.She encourages us not to deter ourselves from pursuing a passion. You can find Dorothea on YouTube and Instagram. Here's an easy one to let go of tension in your neck, shoulders, and wrists. Start by establishing long and even breaths in and out of your nose. Don't hold your breath at any time. Sitting up tall in Mountain Pose, tilt your head side to side. (PAUSE) Next, turn your head side to side like you are saying no. (PAUSE)And now tilt your head up and down as if you're saying yes. (PAUSE) Next, roll your shoulder forward five times. (PAUSE). Roll them backwards five times. (PAUSE) And now, interlace your fingers, roll your hands forward, one at a time, holding on to the interlace. (PAUSE)Release your fingers and  now stack the opposite thumb and fingers on top as you interlace your fingers again. This is going to feel uncomfortable because this is not the way you're used to interlacing your fingers. Roll your hands backward, one at a time. (PAUSE)

Erstausstrahlung: 05.03.13

In GBA 99 we get better acquainted with Sam. He talks rhythm, SantaCon, Burning Man, chasing the pony of enlightenment and "that" gig. He also turns the tables and grills me on my writing history and creative process.
