Hey everyone, it's me again, Luci Dumas, and in this episode of The Profitable Photographer, I had the pleasure of chatting with architectural photographer Jack Zigon. We dug into the fascinating world of architectural photography and the business side of things that makes it all work. Let me tell you, it was such an insightful conversation, it almost made me want to start a new career/ specialty. He is a photographer based in Philadelphia who specializes in photographing architecture. One of his loves is capturing the built environment, and also has a passion for landscape and nature photography, and loves to use light and composition to create beautiful photos with that “wow” factor that makes your clients want to stop and stare. He has had an “illustrious career” working in sales, online marketing and photography for 30 years,In a previous life, as VP of Internet Marketing, he grew Comcast Business' online marketing division from $76 million/year to $1.6 billion annually, In other words…he is very smart and has had a lot of success before starting this new business. Here's what else we covered: • Real Estate vs. Portfolio Photography: While real estate photography can bring in a steady but moderate income, Jack explained how portfolio photography for architects is where the real long-term value is. • Marketing Strategies: Jack gave us a peek into how he markets his business using tools like LinkedIn, email newsletters, and even printed portfolios sent to hot prospects. • How Jack Approaches a Job: It all starts with learning the story behind the building from the architect.  • Starting in Architectural Photography: Thinking about diving in? We chat about where to start and skills needed to get going successfully. • The Gear Game: Jack also talked about what high-end equipment needed for architectural photography • Pricing Your Services: Pricing can be tricky! Jack emphasized how essential it is to price your work correctly. Finding that sweet spot is an art in itself.Whether you're thinking of getting into architectural photography or just curious, this episode is packed with practical tips and advice. I hope it gets you excited to grab your camera, explore the beauty of buildings, and start experimenting. Thanks for tuning in, and don't forget to subscribe to The Profitable Photographer on YouTube and your favorite podcast platform. Molly Rose is an Interior and Architectural Photographer based in Charleston, South Carolina photographing homes and hospitality concepts throughout the South East & West Coast regions. Her work contributes to legacy-building portfolios for designers and architects. She has been featured in Dwell, House Beautiful, Luxe, Ocean Home, and various online publications. Molly also offers mentoring and online resources to other photographers. We caught up to get her unique insights into the world of interior and architectural photography and the challenge of operating her business on two coasts. About Molly: I turn three-dimensional spaces into two-dimensional visual escapes. You may have seen my work in Dwell, House Beautiful, Luxe, Ocean Home, or various online publications. How we get there? That's your magic, baby.I believe that the work my designers and architects put into designing homes should earn them marriage therapy certificates. Interior design and architecture are vocations of empathy and generosity: no one else considers how much neck support a new mother will need in her armchair during a midnight feeding; no one else thinks about having dimmable lights over the kitchen nook that are bright enough for homework and low enough for a romantic dinner while the kids are out doing who-knows-what. That's what I photograph. Those micro-decisions, those intimate details of living that make your work so special to you...and to your clients.I live in Charleston, South Carolina with my husband Zach, our Boykin Spaniels Bravo and Bonnie Belle, and our cat Nuke. Though Charleston is home, I split my time between Orange County, California and South Carolina. https://www.instagram.com/helynn.ospina/ helynn@helynnospina.com https://www.helynnospina.com   Photographer, artist and storyteller, Helynn Ospina's life and work resonate with the momentary, transitional energy of liminal space. From the light or shadow cast upon an object, to wrinkled sheets, rolling fog or windblown curtains, her images vibrate with a sense of possibility, the echoes of past experiences and the mystery of moments yet to come.   Born in Colombia, yet raised in the United States, Helynn's early years were colored by her experience as an undocumented immigrant. A foreigner to both her parents' culture and that of her American classmates, her identity was shaped more by searching than finding, fueling a thoughtful curiosity that informs her process to this day.   This perspective and upbringing led Helynn to pursue an unconventional path, first joining the U.S. Marines, then pursuing a career in scientific research. The inherent challenge in these pursuits was a large part of their appeal, requiring her to push both her physical and intellectual boundaries. Her work in biotech also appealed to her detail-focused, investigative nature—an aspect of her personality that had long inspired an interest in photography. This former childhood hobby eventually grew into a more nuanced understanding of lens-based art, leading Helynn to yet another unexpected vocation.   As her artistic process has evolved, Helynn's photography has also been influenced by the discovery of her family's indigenous ancestry and the concept of animism—that every object, living or inert, has its own spiritual energy. Capturing both the seen and the unseen, the specific and the universal, each of her images speak not only to the moment she has captured, but to the shared experience of our human existence. She sees each photo, not as a finished product, but as the beginning of a conversation, an invitation for the viewer to find a piece of their own story reflected in her work.   Over the past decade, Helynn's work has been celebrated by such organizations as Communication Arts and she has been published in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post. Her commercial clients include such industry-leading brands as AirBNB, WeWork and Martha Stoumen Wines, and she continues to pursue an active fine art practice.     During her free time you can find her roaming forests or empty beaches of Santa Cruz with her two cattle dogs, Koa and Hilo.   Clients AirBnB • Atlas Obscura •Bloomberg • Coreshell Technologies • Eleven, Inc. • Homepolish • Lonny • Martha Stoumen Wines • National Geographic • Natives Rising • Nature • New York Times •San Francisco Chronicle • Sunset • TIME • Travel & Leisure • UpShift Creative • Urban Institute • Via Magazine •  Wall Street Journal • Washington Post • WeWork • WIRED     She currently lives and creates on unceded land of the Amah Mutsun Tribal Band, composed of the descendants of indigenous people taken to missions Santa Cruz and San Juan Bautista during Spanish colonization of the California Central Coast.

After the break, professional animal photographer Anabel DFlux describes how she fashioned a personal penchant for pets into a sustainable career path while still a teen. In this episode's interview by AIAP director Alan Blakely, Brian discusses a wide range of subjects relating to his 42-year career as a professional photographer, including: • Brian's education in photography, his mentors and influences, and his advice for starting a photography business. • Brian's early photography assignments, including product illustration and corporate photography. • His introduction to the photography of architecture and interiors. • The challenges and techniques of shooting architecture on film, lighting for architecture, film processing, and production, and working with large format cameras. • The hybrid era of using both film and digital formats, including scanning, Photoshop processing, and large format printing. • The professional transition to digital format, including camera and lens choices and his progression to using Nikon DSLR camera with PC (perspective control) Nikkor lenses. Like all professional architecture photographers, Brian routinely corrects distortion and converging verticals in the camera. • Techniques for photography of architecture using digital format, including layering, compositing, and HDR. Brian also discloses his technique for his famous city skyline photographs. • A conversation about lens choices in architecture and interior photography. Brian expresses his preference for longer rather than wider lenses when shooting architectural subjects. Brian and Alan discuss their common philosophy about the aesthetics of lens choices and their effect on the viewer. • Brian divulges his formula for cost-sharing and licensing among multiple parties. Brian's simple formula allows an architect, builder, designer, etc., to share costs for photography of a project and obtain a non-transferable license to use the photos as long as they wish. • Brian is a stickler for licensing his photography and offers some valuable wisdom regarding copyright protection. Brian advocates registering all professional photographs with the United States Copyright office. This allows the photographer to easily recover damages in the event that his photographs are used without licensing or consent. Brian's photography can be viewed at his website: www.briandressler.com. Brian can also be reached by telephone at (803) 254-7171. In 1976, William Eggleston opened his first color show at MoMA, the reviews were fairly polarized. To some of the art establishment, color photography was for snapshots and not to be taken seriously and black and white was the only true photographic art form. But while one critic called the show “perfectly banal”, another called it a milestone and said that after it black and white would seem slightly quaint and precious. In the 40 years since, it's almost impossible, at least for me, to imagine a photographic world without color. Don't get me wrong, I love black and white and spent years shooting only black and white but there's something to be said for the work of photographers like Fred Herzog, Steve McCurry and Saul Leiter. We see in color and when it's done right, photography can help us see our world differently through color, which is one of the things I love about the work of Ben Thomas. In Ben's series Chroma, color becomes almost a character, a necessary element to help communicate the narrative behind the work. When I first saw it, I knew I wanted to talk to him. What I found is that each series that he's done over the past several years is an exploration of composition, texture and color—and it all began with a project called Cityshrinker. LINKSOlivo BarbieriAnreas GurskyVincent LaforetVilla Lena Henry the Worst CONNECT WITH BENWebsite: http://benthomas.coTwitter: @___benthomasInstagram: @___benthomas MUSICPlease Listen Carefully (Jahzzar) / CC BY-SA 4.0
