Check out the diverse selection of Mexican spirits being imported by Lot001 Brands! They have Mi Casa Tequila, Parejo (which offers Sotol and Lechugilla expressions), Rancho Tepúa (which offers Bacanora, Lechuguilla, and Palmilla expressions), Whiskey Maíz Nation, and Pelacañas Rum!
Outlawed until 1992, Bacanora is an ancestral Mexican agave spirit that's making a play to join tequila and mezcal in the limelight. Rodrigo Bojorquez of Kilinga Bacanora sits down with the band to talk about his own journey of going legit, what makes this spirit from Sonora so special, and how he's crafting his spirit for lighter, fruitier notes to compete on liquor stores' already well-stocked agave shelves.Plus, Thanksgiving is over and that means it's hot cocktail season baby! The relative merits of the hot toddy are weighed, discussed and ultimately found to be in the eye of the beholder (if not necessarily the palette of the podcast hosts).Follow Kilinga on Instagram at @kilingabacanoraLove The Speakeasy but wish there was more? This episode features Rodrigo Bojorquez of Kilinga Bacanora. Bacanora is the original sprit from the state of Sonora. It's a mezcal variety that pays tribute to his mother by naming it Kilinga. He developed into an agave aficionado but wasn't fond of bacanora. It was a barbecue at a friends house that helped to change his mind about the spirit. He already had agave planted at his ranch. The next step was to learn how to produce bacanora. His hobby has turned into his business. Mom and Dad told him "you have something here". Established in 2018, this elegant and complex spirit has quickly been recognized and awarded. It's a family effort to bring Kalinga Bacanora to the world. www.KilingaBacanora.com - Instagram Highlights From our Discussion: Bar Convent Brooklyn San Diego Spirits Festival New York World Spirits Competition
Pox, the quintessential Chiapas spirit, is probably the most mysterious Mexican drink that I've encountered in my life. It was a big part of my early 20's, but I never truly understood its technicalities or cultural relevance. Happily, thanks to Javier Oroz, who I just interviewed a few weeks ago (go check the Bacanora episode), I got to meet Zury Guindi.Zury started bottling bottling Pox back in 2011 under the umbrella of "Siglo Cero". When even mezcal was just starting to happen, he decided to dedicate his life to corn, panela and wheat instead of worshipping agave. In this episode we try to cover as much as we can about this fascinating and delicious drink. Hope you enjoy it!This episode was recorded at Som, Zury's bar in Mexico City. Nested in the heart of Condesa I can't emphasize enough how fun is to go through all their menu. You'll get to try Pox, rum, raicilla, mezcal, tequila and many other bizarre and lovely Mexican spirits.

As most things that have been created in Northern Mexico, Bacanora tends to create more questions than answers. It may have and active Denomination of Origin and there are some really awesome brands out there bringing some delicious juice, but many of the stories linked to its origins are still obscure. In this conversation with Javier Oroz (mastermind behind @bastardosdelbacanora and @santocuviso) we tried to briefly explore Bacanora's extremely convoluted history. We hope you enjoy it!

I've heard a lot about how bartenders use cocktails as a way to introduce their guests to Mexican spirits like Mezcal, Tequila, Raicilla, Bacanora, and Sotol. And lately, I've also heard a little about using those same cocktails to introduce guests to the communities those spirits come from – turning the cocktail into a gateway to another culture. So I spoke with some bartenders about exactly that. Alex Dominguez checks in from Calico in New York, Matthias Ingelmann from KOL in London, Mariane Garcia from Copitas Cholula, NC Stevens from the nomadic Drinking Folk, and Aithan Shapira from MIT Sloan School of Management. There are a multitude of different names that people use to call agave spirits around Mexico. The most prominent ones are obviously Tequila and Mezcal. But if you travel a bit more you'll find names like Tepe, Ixcateco, Minero, Bacanora, Raicilla and so on and so on.Tuxca is one of those names. But I find that currently there is a good amount of misinformation about the origin and history of such a name. So I decided to invite Edwin, who is currently making his doctoral thesis about historical tabernas, to give us a little bit more insights into what Tuxca really means. Please welcome Edwin Mayoral, and his passion for vino de cocos y vino de mezcal.

Price certainly has to be a factor when considering which Mezcals you stock in your well. And flavor, of course. But what about the environmental impact? Here are six lower-priced Mezcals (and a Bacanora and a Sotol) that you can use for high-volume cocktails that won't break the bank and don't threaten the bio-diversity of Oaxaca. Francesca Claverie is the Native Plant Program Manager at the Borderlands Restoration Network. Based in the southern Arizona town of Patagonia, the Borderlands Restoration Network's mission is “to grow a restorative economy by rebuilding healthy ecosystems, restoring habitat for plants and wildlife, and reconnecting our border communities to the land through shared learning.” Through binational partnerships and community-led innovation, Francesca and her team are making progress toward solving many border-specific conservation challenges– challenges that are often not very well known to those of us living far from the border. - We could easily spend five or six hours discussing Francesca's various conservation projects, but for this hour-long conversation, we zoned in one particularly innovative project that spans the US-Mexico border called "Bacanora for Bats: Binational Conservation and Sustainable Agave Spirits." The project is focused on conserving agave plants– plants that are a critical food source for specific migrating bat populations and are simultaneously under a great deal of pressure because of the booming tequila and Bacanora industries. As you'll hear her explain, Francesca and her team have implemented a one-of-a-kind system that allows for continued economic prosperity from agave production, but not at the expense of the bat populations. It's a perfect example of a community-driven, win-win conservation solution. - A little more than two years ago, the project was awarded the Salazar Center's Connectivity Challenge prize– a $100,000 award that Francesca and her binational team have used to implement this innovative conservation solution. So we obviously talk about how those funds have been put to use and some of the successes that have resulted from the prize. We also discuss some of the unexpected opportunities and challenges that have arisen during the project, and how changing political administrations on both sides of the border have affected her work. We go into great detail about bats, the ecology of agave plants, and specific challenges that come with working across borders. Francesca also has a fascinating personal and professional trajectory, so we talk about her childhood spent on the California-Mexico border and how she decided to pursue conservation as a career. She also offers up some excellent book recommendations and some wise parting words. - I was so inspired by Francesca and her work along the border, and I believe there are lessons in this conversation that can be applied by anyone working in the conservation sector. Thanks to Francesca for taking the time to chat, and thank you for listening. --- This episode is brought to you in partnership with the Salazar Center for North American Conservation. Welcome to Part 2 of our agave spirit exploration! After attending Mezcal Lauderdale a few months ago, we are doing a deep dive of Mexican agave spirits (that aren't tequila) that we not only sampled at the event, but are also available for YOU to try here in Florida. On the last episode, we discovered the difference between tequila and mezcal. Now, we're going to find out the difference between mezcal and bacanora with Vinateros Bacanora. They are imported into the US through Jacksonville-based Gigglewater Imports and co-owner, Chris Allison. He'll give us the rundown on bacanora and Vinateros, along with why Florida is such a great place to import spirits. From there, we finish up with Borderland Spirits and owner Michael Hurley. Borderland is the exclusive U.S. distributor of both Batuq brand bacanoras and Mazot bacanoras and palmilla as well. There's a lot of great distilling history with these brands, and Michael will walk us through it all. AIM-listed Bacanora Lithium (LON: BCN) announced Thursday it has agreed to a $264.5 million acquisition by its offtake partner, Ganfeng Lithium. The deal was highlighted by correspondent Paul Harris who recorded Kitco Roundtable podcast on Friday with Mining Audiences Manager Michael McCrae, editor Neils Christensen and special guest Mark Fellows, co-founder of and director at Skarn Associates. This year most of the big deals in the metals space have been battery materials. McCrae noted deep sea miner, The Metals Company, going public in a $2.9bn SPAC deal announced in March. The company is focused on polymetallic nodules rich in nickel, copper and cobalt. In April Lithium miners Orocobre and Galaxy Resources merged to create the world's fifth-largest global lithium chemicals company. The companies said the merger consolidates the group's position in Argentina. The deal was valued at A$4 billion. The Bacanora deal returned focus to the battery materials space after last week's big precious metal M&A: Fortuna Silver Mines and Roxgold combining in a $884 million deal. The panelists also discussed record high copper prices, the dismal jobs report and Pandora Jewellery dropping mined diamonds.
