Did you ever read rags with headlines like “I had an alien love child” or “Psycho seagull stole dog from my garden” or “Monster rats the size of cows”? No? You're missing out on a Wild...Wild....Life. Welcome to episode 117 of See Hear Podcast. Writers Stephen Toblowsky and Beth Henley met Talking Head, David Byrne, and had a conversation about newspaper articles he'd read with bizarre things happening to ordinary people, and wouldn't it be interesting to come up with a script for a film using that idea as a basis. Beth and Stephen came up with said script, but Byrne rewrote much of it....the result is his 1986 film, True Stories. True Stories looks at a fictional town in Texas celebrating its 150th anniversary. In particular it looks at some of the peculiarities of the town using a 4th wall breaking Byrne to guide us around that town. Where's the music connection???? It is a musical of sorts, but more relevant to the story, I contend that the town is like an enclosed snow cone and music is the very air the town breathes. Unfortunately, Tim wasn't available to record, but Kerry and I had a fine conversation about Talking Heads, finding love, conspiracy theorists, community, the fine line between gentle parody and being patronising, constant lying to get attention....and of course, music....cos that's what we do. Was the film ultimately satisfying? Tune in and find out what we thought. You wanna follow along? The film is currently playing on a variety of streaming services or may be in your DVD library if you still believe in physical media. Had the pleasure of chatting with playwright and son of actress Eileen Heckart (Bus Stop), Luke Yankee, about growing up in the world of Hollywood and his journey to be coming a playwright. It's a wonderful interview that touches on his relationships with not only the Hollywood greats but also the pioneers of the theatre (including Steven Schwartz, Beth Henley, David Lindsay-Abaire, and David Henry Hwang) and how they affected his growth as an artist and craft of playwriting. We touch on his delving into playwriting, winning The Stanley Award, his inspirations and writing style, receiving notes and getting bad feedback, knowing and breaking the rules of playwriting as well as the importance of script analysis and criticism. We also talk the benefits of making your work more personal, making characters sound different, learning from the Greeks and other classics, and what he views as the most important element of playwriting. Also, if you're a long time listener to the podcast, Luke may very well have ended the debate on whether or not it's worth studying playwriting in academia. Overall, Luke was is absolutely charming and delivers a plethora of knowledge about the craft. Enjoy!Luke Yankee is a writer, director, producer, actor, and teacher. His play, "The Last Lifeboat" (published by Dramatists Play Service) has had more than 50 productions in North America and has won over 60 regional awards. His play, "Marilyn, Mom & Me" was the recipient of the Southwest Theatre Productions Sponsor's Award, the Moondance Stageplay Award, and the Writer's Digest Award for Best Play. His play, “Confessions of a Star Maker” was recently a finalist for the Screencraft stageplay competition and was chosen for the Last Frontier Theatre Conference. Tonight, we host our very special guest: Stephen Tobolowsky!  Stephen Tobolowsky is one of the leading character actors today. He has appeared in over 200 movies and television shows. He has played everything from Ned Ryerson in Groundhog Day to Sandy Ryerson in Glee. He has appeared almost naked as Stu Beggs on Californication and has worn the same suit for seven years as Principal Earl Ball on The Goldbergs. Stephen currently appears as Dr. Leslie Berkowitz in the new generation remake of Norman Lear's One Day at a Time. Seasons 1-3, at present, are still available on Netflix.  PopTV and CBS aired Season 4.  Stephen has always been a storyteller. In sixth grade, he won his school's storytelling contest and over that summer won the award as best storyteller in the City of Dallas (13 years old and under division.) That impulse led him into writing. He wrote the screenplay for True Stories with David Byrne and Beth Henley. He wrote and performed his storytelling films Stephen Tobolowsky's Birthday Party and The Primary Instinct. His labor of love has been The Tobolowsky Files, created with producer David Chen. What began as a behind-the-scenes movie podcast has become a sometimes funny, sometimes compelling portrait of a human life - as described by Miles McNutt here. BOOTH ONE - Celebrating Culture and Conversation

We welcome to the Booth this week the very talented and vibrant Jerre Dye. Recommended by a recent genius guest, Cecelia Wingate, Jerre is a Southerner by birth, having grown up in a small town in Mississippi. He is a playwright, actor, director and opera librettist, now living in Chicago. Fellow Mississippi playwright Beth Henley, whose play Crimes of the Heart earned her a Pulitzer Prize in 1981, praises his lyrical voice and distinctly Southern sensibilities, proclaiming him "a vibrant force in the American theater." Jerre's plays Cicada and Distance were both nominated for Joseph Jefferson awards. First off, Frank tells us about seeing our friend Christine McHugh's one-woman play Parents Must Be Dead at the Greenhouse Theatre. By all accounts, the evening was a smashing success, with a full house and great audience response. Congratulations, Christine! We learn that the somewhat odd title refers to a friend of Christine's preference listing on a dating website. A bit maudlin, but at least he's honest. Gary reminds our listeners that they can hear the Booth One crew interviewed on the Rick Kogan After Hours radio program on the WGN website. To listen to Rick's jaw-droppingly generous words about our show, click here. Jerre takes us through his upbringing, his school days in Memphis, and his foray into acting in Hollywood. Big brother John Dye was his mentor, inspiration and role model. Highlights from his LA days include teaching Lily Tomlin how to clog(!?) and appearing as a dancer in the 1993 film of The Beverly Hillbillies with Jim Varney. His mentor at University of Memphis was Gloria Baxter, who was a classmate and friend of Frank Galati's at Northwestern. As film fans, we love a well-written movie review, even if it's a pan. A couple of snippets from the the recent Keanu Reeves/Winona Ryder film reviewed in the NY Times: "'Destination Wedding' is torture."; "Nothing is as ailing as the screenplay." Almost worth going to see it just for the train wreck! Jerre talks about becoming an opera librettist and how that writing style and process differs from, and is similar to, his playwrighting. He first got involved with opera six years ago doing a project in Memphis creating several different stories about the people who worked at a now-shuttered Sears distribution complex. His opera career has advanced from there to the point where he's now at work on a project called Taking Up Serpents with composer Kamala Sankaram to be presented by Washington National Opera at the Kennedy Center. The piece runs January 11-13 in Washington. Jerre has many other projects in the works and we're excited to see them come to life. As Jerre says, "Everybody's born with a story. It's like a spell." In our Good Times and Bum Times segment, you'll hear about the first raw-meat vending machine now operational in upstate New York (a dream invention for carnivore Gary), and you'll meet Jessie, the foul-mouthed Macaw who shocked rescuers on a London roof top with a barrage of F-bombs. Jerre and the boys play a little Chat Pack and we learn about Olympic dream events, books they would write, and least-favorite education courses they've taken. As always, this segment reveals some fascinating insight into our guest and hosts. Kiss Of Death: Nabi Tajima, recognized as the World's Oldest Person Born in 1900 in Araki, Japan, Ms. Tajima was the last known person born in the 19th century, and one of the few people who could recall a time before World War I. She had nine children and 160 descendents, including great-great-great grandchildren. Nabi Tajima was 117. Read the full Washington Post article here.

Arianne Zucker, who was nominated for a Daytime Emmy in 2010, portrays unlucky-in-love Nicole Dimera, a former model, on NBC’s "Days of our Lives." Zucker, the quintessential Southern California native, was discovered at age 16 by a modeling scout from It Models. She began modeling in Los Angeles where she shot several clothing catalogues and campaigns. Her career later took her to such places as Paris, Japan, Australia, and New York. As Zucker’s modeling career prospered, so did her interest in television. She appeared in several national commercials for Mazda, Miata, McDonald’s and Burger King. Zucker decided to settle back down in Los Angeles and began her studies as an actress at Pierce College. It was there that she first acquired her love for theater. She was involved in several workshops that included performances in Beth Henley’s "Crimes of the Heart" and Neil Simon’s "Last of the Red Hot Lovers." She continued her studies at the highly reputable Howard Fine Studios and recently finished a two-year program of scene study improv with Stephen Book. Zucker got her first role in a student film at AFI (American Film Institute), and two months after shooting, auditioned for the role of Nicole Walker on the long running soap “Days of our Lives.” Four months later, Zucker became the newest member of the cast and won the Soap Opera Digest Award in 2004 for Outstanding Villainess. In recent months, Zucker has become ambassador for Habitat for Humanity in the San Fernando Valley. She will soon be traveling to Philadelphia and Detroit, among other cities, where she will be leading their charity builds. She has also participated in numerous USO Tours, including visiting bases in Southern California and Guantanamo Bay. The non-profit organization Success for Kids (www.sfk.org) is also close to her heart and she has spent time mentoring children in a structural development program.
