On September 7th 2020 we acknowledge National Suicide Prevention Week, which happens to include the September 11th anniversary.  9/11/2001 was a life changing day for the world, and also a day that many of our servicemembers look back on as the impetus for their own dedication to service. As the number of individuals who die by suicide increases, so too do the number of survivors impacted by the loss. Home Base recognizes and honors the sacrifice of Families of the Fallen, to include those whose family member died in service to our country and to those who lost a loved one by suicide. In 2017, Home Base collaborated with Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS) to establish a first-in-the nation two-week Intensive Clinical Program (ICP) for survivors of traumatic loss. The program provides 63 hours of treatment – the equivalent of more than one year’s worth of therapy – for post-traumatic stress and complicated grief, putting our Families of the Fallen on a path of healing and hope.We would like to say a special thank you to Raytheon Technologies, who just stepped forward with significant support for the Families of the Fallen ICP.  Raytheon Technologies is leading the way, and we are deeply grateful as we would not be able to fully provide this care without the generosity of partners like Raytheon Technologies. And if you would like to join in this effort at Home Base to provide this expert care for our military families, please go to click here, where you can also make a donation in someone’s honor or memory. To learn more about TAPS:www.taps.orgFor 24/7  TAPS Assistance:(800)-959-TAPS______________________________________________Big Miracle: the 2012 movie based on the 1988 collaborative National Guard whale rescue mission in Barrow, AlaskaTo learn more and connect with us:www.homebase.org/homebasenationTwitter,Facebook,Instagram,LinkedInHome Base Nation Team:Steve Monaco, Marine Veteran Brendan McCaffrey, Maureen Roderick, Charlotte Luckey, Karianne Kraus, Dan Berg, and The Moxi Group - DeeDee Kearney, Natalie Bonelli Producer and Host:Ron Hirschberg Home Base Media Lab Chairman:Peter Smyth The views expressed by guests to the Home Base Nation podcast are their own and their appearance on the program does not imply an endorsement of them or any entity they represent. On September 9, our speakers Katherine Marshall, Kim R. Ford, Jerome Tennille, our moderator Stephen Moseley, and our partner UNA-NCA had a great discussion about how community solidarity has displayed itself in ways that we haven’t seen before to eradicate poverty in the age of pandemic. At a time when everyone around the world is grappling with unprecedented changes and challenges in their lives, one of the most fundamental values that continues to make positive changes in our lives is generosity. The inevitable quality of giving continues bringing individuals of all backgrounds regardless of their languages, ethnicities, races, faiths, opinions together across the globe. We have witnessed various shades of generosity as they are implemented as a means of standing together in unity. Whether that's through educating ourselves on social issues, raising awareness about humanitarian causes, supporting communities through monetary contributions or reaching out to a neighbor next door or across the continents, every act of goodwill has touched people’s lives. In this time of uncertainty, there's a fundamental truth that gives us hope - that together we can do extraordinary things. Together! In 2012, September 5th was designated the “International Day of Charity” by the UN General Assembly to commemorate the anniversary of the passing away of Mother Teresa, who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 "for work undertaken in the struggle to overcome poverty and distress, which also constitute a threat to peace." In this spirit, on September 9th, Rumi Forum and UNA-NCA would like to invite you to a virtual panel highlighting how individual and/or collective initiatives keep us connected. Speakers: Katherine Marshall, Executive Director, World Faiths Development Dialogue Katherine Marshall is a senior fellow at the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs, where she leads the center's work on religion and global development, and a professor of the practice of development, conflict, and religion in the Walsh School of Foreign Service. Marshall, who worked at the World Bank from 1971 to 2006, has nearly five decades of experience on a wide range of development issues in Africa, Latin America, East Asia, and the Middle East, particularly those facing the world’s poorest countries. She led the World Bank’s faith and ethics initiative between 2000 and 2006. Marshall is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and was previously a trustee of Princeton University. Marshall has a B.A. from Wellesley College, an M.A. from Princeton University, an MPA from Princeton’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, and an honorary doctorate from the University of Cambodia. Every year on September 10th, individuals and organizations in over 50 countries connect and work together to prevent suicide, by supporting those who are struggling and to help those who are grieving. This year we will address this topic with Barbara Rubel the author of the fictional novel "But I Didn't Say Goodbye – Helping Families after a Suicide".  In her reader-friendly and well researched book, she addresses the loss of her father through suicide in a meaningful and thought provoking read, and discusses WHAT she learned in the process of grieving and healing. Barbara will share her unique approach to suicide prevention and post-vention, on how can develop personal resiliency and reclaim hope after loss in this month's "Bear Psychology radio show" on Realityradio101.com program. Whether you know someone who has attempted or completed suicide, or felt so much despair that you have considered it yourself ... we want to open up the dialogue today about this important topic. Let's start by clarifying that whatever is going on in your life today, the pain of the moment can elevate us to open up and and there are many people and sources of information that can provide relief. We will begin the conversation with two numbers and resource links so we have a safe reference point right from the start: In Canada: https://suicideprevention.ca/WSPD 1.833.456.4566 In the U.S.: https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/  1-800-273-8255 We will discuss: The WHY of suicide Reflect on feelings of anger, guilt and grief Barbara's own experience of losing her father to suicide and how she was able to reconstruct meaning into her life after such a sudden loss Learn about her unique Dual Process Model and 4 Tasks of Grief and apply them to the impact of suicide loss Does the current COVID-19 Pandemic complicate grief from suicide of someone in your life? Barbara will reflect from the lens of her own tragic loss and personal experience. What do you do when your father dies by suicide while you are in the hospital awaiting the birth of your triplets? What do you do when you can't attend your father's funeral because physician orders include complete bed rest? What do you do when you realize that you experienced a devastating loss and that you are not alone in that experience? You write a book and dedicate your life to helping others affected by suicide. Barbara Rubel's fictional characters in "But I Didn't Say Goodbye" are a compilation of what individuals may experience throughout their lifetime as a suicide loss survivor. "But I Didn't Say Goodbye: Helping Families After a Suicide" tells the story, from the perspective of an eleven-year-old boy Alex and his family, as they are rocked by suicide and reeling from the aftermath. Through Alex's eyes, the reader sees the transformation of feelings after going through death by suicide. New to the book's 3rd edition, each chapter ends with Alex reflecting 10 years later on his experience, introducing family members and friends in his recollections. Barbara Rubel has combined our modern academic theories of grieving, and the research that supports those theories, and then translated them into a readable story for anyone bereaved by suicide. The revised edition is an evidence-informed and contemporary treatment of a devastating form of loss that uses the artful device of a hypothetical case study to render it in human terms. Through the story, the reader understands what losing someone to suicide might be like for a family, how to make meaning of the loss, and ways to experience personal growth. This self-help book was revised to provide guidance and education for clinicians and families to help suicide loss survivors. As the country battles whether or not to wear masks, and whether or not hydroxychloroquine works, Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) rips into the news you need with his trademark wit, wisdom and humor. He digs into the top national defense, first-responders and vets news and shares a powerful conversation with Medal of Freedom recipient and legendary TAPS Founder Bonnie Carroll (@bonnie_at_taps). Angry Americans continues a groundbreaking focus on the front-line fighters of the war against COVID-19 with another inspiring guest shaping the future. This Memorial Day will be unlike any other. Arlington National Cemetery is closed to visitors. Parades are canceled. Veterans are being buried without military funerals. Memorial Day is about remembering those lost to our nation’s wars. And this year, with over 93,000 Americana dead from the coronavirus, there is a profound sense of mourning and loss nationwide. But it can also be a time for unity. And to draw lessons about how to mourn and move forward after loss from a courageous group of people: surviving military families. Over 7,000 troops have died in Iraq, Afghanistan and other countries since 9/11. Over 6,000 are lost every year to suicide. Mostly hidden from the nation’s view.  But now, America is feeling the pain of loss. And military families can help us understand pain and move forward. Their greatest champion is Bonnie Carroll. [47:44] Bonnie is one of toughest leaders you’ll ever meet. A veteran, the surviving spouse of General Tom Carroll, a former staffer in the Reagan and Bush White Houses, and President and Founder of Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS), the leading national organization providing care for those impacted by the death of a military loved one. Bonnie courageously founded TAPS after the death of her husband in an Army plane crash. She turned a tragedy into triumph. And will help you overcome whatever challenges you face now.  Bonnie knows isolation, depression and pain like few others in the world. She knows how to survive it, find purpose and thrive afterwards. She is the author of Healing Your Grieving Heart After A Military Death and one of the foremost experts on grief and trauma. She’s also a happy warrior, a mentor and a voice of light in the most trying times. And a longtime friend and mentor of our host, Army veteran and Founder of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, @PaulRieckhoff. The two share a conversation that will leave you moved, enlightened and empowered.  Featured on Fox News, Variety, NPR, The New York Times, MSNBC and CNN, it’s another episode of the most dynamic podcast in America for independent politics, news and culture.  Get special access to behind-the-scenes content, to Paul Rieckhoff, to our guests, and to special offers by joining the new Angry Americans community on Patreon. The second part of VA's motto calls on us to care for the widows and orphans of those that have "borne the battle." Earlier this year, we had Ashlynne Haycock on during our round-table podcast talking about the Forever GI Bill, and she talked about how a crucial element of the new bill was to benefit survivors. This week, we bring on Bonnie Carroll, the president and founder of the Transition Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS). Bonnie Carroll founded Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS) following the death of her husband in an Army C-12 plane crash on November 12, 1992. TAPS is the leading national Military Service Organization providing compassionate care, casework assistance, and 24/7/365 emotional support for all those impacted by the death of a military loved one. She is a Veteran of the Air National Guard and a 2015 recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Vanessa Daley is the Project Manager of TAPS Youth Programs. She is the surviving daughter of SFC Dan H Gabrielson, an Army Reservist with more than 20 years of service, who was KIA 9 July 03 in Baqubah, Iraq.  At the time, Vanessa was a student at the University of Wisconsin - Green Bay, studying Elementary Education with an emphasis on Early Childhood. In 2005, Vanessa volunteered as a mentor at the TAPS Good Grief Camp in Washington DC. It was during those 5 days that she fell in love with the mission of TAPS & realized just how much she missed that military connection. For the next three years, Vanessa would continue to volunteer, even after taking a 2nd grade teaching position - in the same town that her father worked in for 20 years. Vanessa joined TAPS full time in 2008, moving to Fort Hood to work more closely with military families. In 2009, Vanessa helped the Army to launch it's Survivor Outreach Services (SOS) program & set up the first Regional TAPS office on a military installation, which just happened to be across from the 4ID Memorial - a wall on which her father is memorialized. Vanessa moved to Fort Bliss in 2011 with her husband, David - a soldier whom she met at Fort Hood, & began providing support to survivors there, setting up another regional TAPS office and working closely with the Fort Bliss SOS. Originally from Northwestern Wisconsin, Vanessa and her husband just bought their first home Up North & plan to raise their girls close to family. About TAPS The Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS) offers compassionate care to all those grieving the death of a loved one serving in our Armed Forces. Since 1994, TAPS has provided comfort and hope 24 hours a day, seven days a week through a national peer support network and connection to grief resources, all at no cost to surviving families and loved ones. http://VeteranPodcast.com/007
