Ken and Laura discuss being a rare person who didn't grow up in Boston or go to school in Boston yet lived in Boston, taking the first job you get offered, growing up in New Jersey, commuting to NYC, panes of glass falling from the Hancock Tower, growing up with the TV Guide channel instead of the physical TV Guide, Jury Duty, the underappreciated chemistry and skill of Regis and Kathy Lee, The Crash Test Dummies, the best chemistry on TV, Chicken Soup, Jackie Mason, how TV Guide thinks most stand up sucks, diversity in comedy, Def Jam, how the major female comedians in 1992 were mostly the same ones in 2022, Paula Poundstone, Communism, shirtless Jacksons, Julia Sweeney as Pat, when sketches don't hold up, lazy comedy, SCTV, how sometimes on a very rare occasion garbage you buy in a TV Guide does actually go up in value, buying everlasting love, Golden Girls, The Winter Olympics, when Hockey is billed last, peaking at 19, Mary Lou Retton, America's Funniest People, never agreeing that the winning video on American's Funniest Home Videos should have won, the serious episodes of Fresh Prince of Bel Air, how you are either Rope or Summer Rental, The Astronomers, inspired by true stories made for TV Movies, convicting Charles Manson, The Women's Super G, Muppets Night at the Museum, Roseanne, Robin Williams as Mork from Ork, Jason Priestly as Teen Priest, Baptism by Lips, Drexel's Class, Digital Underground, The Boy Who Could Fly, handing out condoms at shopping malls, country music variety shows, The Civil War, complaining about PBS, the KGB's view of the Cuban Missile Crisis, University by Television and hating to see good looking people on TV.

Tread Perilously's month of reactionary PSA television continues with an ABC Afterschool Special called "The Day My Kid Went Punk." When dweeby band nerd Terry Warren gets a summer job as a day camp counselor at a mountain resort, he takes the opportunity to rethink his image. Trading in his terrible glasses for contacts, Hagger slacks for black jeans, and collared shirts for a ripped-up tee, he goes full Sid Vicious -- much to the displeasure of his employers and his parents. Will the Warrens assume he's doing this for no good reason or will they have a thoughtful discussion about going punk? Erik and Justin immediately get lost discussing some of their favorite punk and post-punk acts. Gene Simmons and Ace Frehly make special appearances. Justin notes the Big Lib energy in the special. Erik reveals when he was done with The Cure. Jay Underwood gets surprise praise even as memories of The Boy Who Could Fly leads to a tangent. A Stranger Things discussion also breaks out. Justin recounts the meeting of Nick Cave and Nicolas Cage. A brief Geography Corner ponders where the well-to-do part of the Valley was in The Karate Kid and Terry's fashion choices get critiqued.

We have today, 80s horror icon Michael Myers, also known as, Nick Castle. Director, writer, and actor - notable for directing The Last Starfighter (1984), Major Payne (1995), and Escape from New York (1981) among others.Nick's fictional character, Micheal Myers, in the Box Office $255 million-grossing Halloween film is possibly one of his most well-known roles that have been strongly supported by fans for years. He appears in the 1978 Halloween film as a young boy who murders his elder sister, Judith Myers. The same role is reprised fifteen years later in the sequel where he returns home to Haddonfield to murder more teenagers. In 1986 he wrote and directed the heartwarming fantasy drama film, The Boy Who Could Fly which tells the story of an autistic boy who dreams of flying and touching everyone he meets, including a new family who has moved in after their father dies.Filmmaking came naturally to Nick for a host of reasons. For one he grew up in a showbiz family. His father choreographed musical comedy films, while an uncle of his worked as a lighting designer on movie sets. At a tender age, his dad introduced him to entertainment through smaller roles in front of the camera and summer internships behind the scenes. There he grew a fondness for directing which inspired him to pursue film school at USC.Notoriety came quickly for Nick. Along with collegemates, Carpenter, Rokos, Longenecker, and Johnston, Nick worked cinematography and co-wrote The Resurrection of Broncho Billy - a short film they created while still in college that blew up and entered the academy consideration and won the academy award for live-action short film in 1970. Nick and Carpenter reunited and worked together again on Carpenter's 1974 sci-fi comedy, Darkstar, which follows the crew of the deteriorating starship Dark Star, twenty years into their mission to destroy unstable planets that might threaten future colonization of other planets. In 1984, Nick made his second directorial film which was quite groundbreaking. The Last Starfighter, became one of the earliest films to incorporate extensive CGI. The plot centers around video game expert Alex Rogan who, after achieving a high score on Starfighter, meets the game's designer and is recruited to fight a war in space. He's transported to another planet only to find out it was just a test. He was recruited to join the team of best starfighters to defend their world from the attack. Its popularity resulted in several non-film adaptations of the story in musicals, books, comics, games, etcNick was making innovative films long before most of the more popular guys came along. It is appropriate to consider his 80s sci-fi films as pioneering. Please enjoy my fun conversation with Nick Castle.

The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview '80s superstar Jay Underwood of The BOY WHO COULD FLY & UNCLE BUCK. He will discuss the release of DOOMED! THE UNTOLD STORY OF ROGER CORMAN'S FANTASTIC FOUR, out on Blu-ray and DVD this week. Underwood, as many know, was the star of the '80s hit THE BOY WHO COULD FLY and also starred in such movies as UNCLE BUCK opposite John Candy, THE SONNY AND CHER STORY (as Sonny Bono), and the NOT QUITE HUMAN movies, and the TV series YOUNG INDIANA JONES, 21 JUMP STREET, SUPERBOY and THE WEST WING. In the early nineties he was hired to play Johnny Storm/The Invisible Torch in Roger Corman's FANTASTIC FOUR movie - a movie that was never released. More recently, Underwood felt God's call on his life to pursue full time Christian ministry. After starting seminary in 2003, he became a youth pastor and then after graduation in 2007, a full time pastor in a small northern California mountain town.
