Ryan Dusick is an Associate Marriage & Family Therapist with an MA in Clinical Psychology and the founding drummer of the world's most popular band, Maroon 5. As a boy, he dreamt of pitching for the Dodgers and writing adventure novels. Arm injuries sidelined his burgeoning baseball career, just as rock music became his new passion and purpose. Founding the band Kara's Flowers in 1994 with fellow Brentwood High School students Jesse Carmichael, Mickey Madden, and Adam Levine, Ryan worked tirelessly through his college years at UCLA before the band changed its name to Maroon 5 and finally had its first hit record, Songs About Jane. Multiple hit songs, two Grammy Awards, and 20 million albums sold later, Ryan found himself suffering and without direction as his career as a performer came to an end, just as it was taking off. Struggling with physical and mental health challenges, Ryan finally overcame his struggles in 2016, when he began his journey of recovery, culminating in a new life path full of meaning, purpose, and fulfillment. Now working as a mental health professional at The Missing Peace Center for Anxiety in Agoura Hills, CA, Ryan is spreading the message that recovery is possible, and some astounding things can come with it.

Ryan Dusick is best known as the founding drummer of the band Maroon 5. As a boy, he dreamt of pitching for the Dodgers and writing adventure novels. Arm injuries sidelined his baseball career, just as rock music became his new passion and purpose. In 1994 he founded the band Kara's Flowers with fellow Brentwood High School students Jesse Carmichael, Mickey Madden, and Adam Levine. Ryan spent the next 7 years honing his craft and in 2001 the band found success after changing its name to Maroon 5 and releasing their first album, Songs About Jane. Multiple hit songs, two Grammy Awards, and 20 million albums sold later, Ryan found himself suffering with mental health issues that affected his ability to play. He worked tirelessly to overcome the physical and mental hurdles that kept him from doing the thing he loved, but eventually was forced to leave the band. His career as a performer came to an end, just as it was taking off.Ryan's depression and grief around the loss of his identity brought about years of alcoholism and mental health struggles. Iran is experiencing massive protests sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman, after she was taken into custody by the nation's morality police for allegedly wearing her headscarf improperly. Thousands of people, from schoolgirls to oil and gas workers, have taken to the streets to protest police brutality, Iran's strict morality laws, and, increasingly, the regime. Popular slogans among protestors include “Woman, Life, Freedom” and “death to the dictator.” In Nashville, the Iranian and Kurdish communities have held several demonstrations in solidarity with the protests in Iran in an effort to raise awareness of what's going on. Many still have family in Iran and worry for their safety. In this episode, we're joined by members of the local Iranian and Kurdish communities to hear about their concerns. But first, Mayor John Cooper and the Tennessee Titans recently announced a deal to build a new $2.18 billion domed stadium. At the top of the show, WPLN metro reporter Ambriehl Crutchfield explains how this will impact Nashville tax payers. Guests: Ambriehl Crutchfield, WPLN metro reporter Maryam Abolfazli, Iranian-American who has attended protests in Nashville Ramona Heidari, Iranian-American who helped organize Nashville protests Reza Sharif, Iranian-American Ariana Blourchian, Brentwood High School student who attended protests in Nashville
My guest this week is Ryan Dusick, who was Maroon 5's original drummer until he retired because of chronic nerve damage. After departing the band, Ryan struggled with anxiety and addiction for a decade before making a commitment to recovery. Founding the group Kara's Flowers in 1994 with fellow Brentwood High School students Adam Levine, Jesse Carmichael, and Mickey Madden, Ryan and his bandmates worked tirelessly for a decade before the group changed its name to Maroon 5 and finally had its first hit album Songs About Jane. Multiple hit songs, two Grammy Awards, and 20 million albums sold later, Ryan found himself suffering and without direction when his career as a performer came to an end just as it was taking off. After years of struggling with physical and mental health challenges, Ryan finally overcame in 2016, when he began his journey of recovery, culminating in a new life path. Ryan now works as a mental health professional at the Missing Peace Center for Anxiety where he now helps others with their personal struggles, and has released a new book outlining his amazing life story. During the interview we spoke about the early days of Maroon 5, dealing with anxiety and a chronic injury, advice from U2, and much more. I spoke with RYAN via zoom from his personal studio in Los Angeles, CA. On the intro I'll take a look at the parts of a song that are protectable, and the 9 constants of vocal recording. var podscribeEmbedVars = { epId: 83777338, backgroundColor: 'white', font: undefined, fontColor: undefined, speakerFontColor: undefined, height: '600px', showEditButton: false, showSpeakers: true, showTimestamps: true };

Strange activity began just a few short weeks after the family moved in. Cranmer said the strange but seemingly harmless activity continued for a number of years before turning dark and violent. At the advice of his mother and to allay his own creepy feelings about the house, Cranmer had a Roman Catholic priest perform a ritual blessing on the place. During the blessing his oldest son stood in the doorway in the form of an "X" and blocked the priest from entering his bedroom, he revealed. The entity's activity slowly became more sinister and interactive. Cranmer remembered being harassed on a daily basis with physical attacks. Eventually the activity was more than the family could take and the Pittsburgh Catholic Diocese became involved which resulted in almost daily mass being held in the home along with multiple exorcisms.
