With over 26 years as a DJ and Producer Browncoat has made not only an impact in the EDM industry but a cultural impact in the underground India music scene. Find out how he stays motivated and the impact he has made in India developing the EDM scene there. Thanks for joining me. Browncoat. 0:13-Browncoat: Hi there, Mason. Thank you so much for having me. I've been really looking forward to this conversation. Really happy to be here. 0:18-Mason Paine: You've been creating music for 26 years. What first drew you into EDM? 0:24-Browncoat: While I wouldn't necessarily call my music EDM, I try and make more deep house, melodic techno and house and slightly more underground than conventional EDM. And it's been 26 years, but it's still a struggle in India because India has such a deep and rich musical culture that it's very difficult for anything which is non-indian to cut through. And that's probably the main reason where I wanted to showcase more of the international and electronic music because that's not what you get in still date. There's not a single radio channel or tv show or anything which can be considered mainstream that showcases international music. And that's the best part about it. You're running against the tide and showcasing music that people are not used to. That was the biggest draw for me. 1:12-Mason Paine: So you've been going against the grain for many years. But when you first started in the scene, what genre did you spin? 1:19-Browncoat: In the beginning, it was just a fight and struggle with the venues to allow us to play international, be it top 40, hip hop, r and b, or even basic pop. It was just that difficult because everybody just wanted you to play what's being broadcasted everywhere, the typical hindi film music or the punjabi music. And at that time, we would just be happy to play top 40s because that was the struggle for us. 1:42-Mason Paine: Wow. So you had a history of just fighting to be able to play certain songs in the style that you wanted to. But as of today now, what's the particular genre that you spin nowadays I. 1:55-Browncoat: Play a lot of melodic techno, indie dance, deep house, progressive. That's also because I produce a lot of these genres and it gets an amazing response from the floor. It's really progressing beautifully and I love where the music is right now. 2:08-Mason Paine: What is the EDM music scene like in India? 2:11-Browncoat: The electronic scene in India is amazing. The crowd that turns up for our events is just beautiful. The response that you get from the audience is incomparable because I've traveled and played around the world and I still prefer playing to an Indian audience because they really give you their all when they're dancing, the screaming, the shouting, the smiling. And even though it might not be the mainstream genre in India, but because they're such a populist nation, a small fraction also makes up for big numbers. So the scene in India is amazing. You can ask any touring dj. The love that the dance flow in India gives is incomparable. 2:45-Mason Paine: You talked about how it was an uphill battle to be a dj 26 years ago and how now the scene is like, really amazing. But have you had to navigate any big challenges while promoting your music in India? 2:59-Browncoat: It's a little tough because we still are a conservative society and clubbing and partying are still considered more of a weste...

There are demons beneath your bed that are gonna eat you up this year. I am unofficially performing at GaFilk this weekend in Atlanta. And I count down the Best Celtic Bands of 2022. This is Atlanta Pub Songs & Stories #262. 0:16 - “The Prettiest Hobbit” by Kilted Kings from Flower of Scotland 2:08 - WELCOME TO ATLANTA PUB SONGS & STORIES I am Marc Gunn. I'm a Celtic and folk musician living in Atlanta, Georgia. This is the audio liner notes for the songs I record and play and for the stories I gather and the people I meet in the city of Atlanta and beyond. This is the first episode as an Atlanta-centric podcast. Hopefully, I can do it justice. 4:26 - WHAT IS GAFILK? Filk is the music of fandom. The name started as a misspelling of folk music that was happening at science fiction conventions back in the 60s. GaFilk, or Georgia Filk, is a convention that happens every year here in Atlanta, Georgia. I was first introduced to it when Brobdingnagian Bards was invited as a Super Secret Guest. We were still performing together in Austin. It's a different kind of convention. There aren't a whole bunch of panels on your favorite fandoms. It's all about the music… and the people. Folks from all over the nation gather together to sing songs inspired by science fiction, fantasy, parodies, and just geek out together. And it's a RelaxaCon. It's super laid back. I've been a guest about three times, including with the Bards. This year, I'm just going for fun. But I'll have CDs and album pins and will do my best to entertain you when it's my turn in the filk circle. 6:50 - UPCOMING SHOWS Here are some more shows happening this month: JAN 6-8: GaFilk, Atlanta, GA JAN 12: Internet Concert with Special Guest @ 6:30 PM EST JAN 21: Maggie McGuinness Pub, Huntsville, AL @ 7 PM JAN 28: The Lost Druid, Avondale Estates @ 6:30-9:30 PM JUN 3-10: Celtic Invasion Vacations, County Mayo, Ireland 10:06 - Altan "Dúlamán" from Island Angel 13:45 - JOIN THE CLUB The show is brought to you by my Gunn Runners on Patreon. If you enjoy this podcast and my music, please join the Club. You get 4-10 new things every month. That includes bonus podcasts, downloadable songs, printed sheet music, blogs, stories from the road, and access to Coffee with The Celtfather video concerts. Sign up for as little as $5 per month. And you can save 15% with an annual membership. Thanks to my newest Gunn Runners on Patreon: Rich C, Janice G, Emil V, Bob H, Marguerite K 14:42 - COUNTDOWN OF TOP 10 CELTIC BANDS OF 2022? I was listening to a podcast called Hit Parade. They talk about the hits. The host is a Charts Nerd. Like me, he listened to Casey Kasem's Top 40 Hits back in the 80s. I wasn't quite as obsessed as he was. But I did love the show. My interest in charts really took off in the early 2000s when the Brobdingnagian Bards were topping the charts. I was able to figure out the system and how to maximize our success there. So now I have Two Charts that I keep track of each year. One is the Celtic Top 20. This is the last episode of the year of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. I highlight fan votes for the top 20 songs and tunes of all of the episodes of the year. The second is my organic pick of the Top 10 Celtic Bands. Meaning, these are the bands I played the most. I didn't plan to play any band more than any other. But I did. You can read the blog, Top 10 Celtic Bands of 2022, on my website. You can also check out my 5 Celtic Bands to Watch in 2023. 24:37 - DOWNLOAD MY FREE EP You can download all of my songs in this show. Just send me an email. pubsong@celtfather You can let me know what you're doing while listening to this episode. I'd love to hear from you. You will get an auto responder with a link to download this month's album. Please subscribe to the podcast if you're not already subscribed. It's quick and easy. And just like this Free EP, it is FREE! 25:38 - “Biddy Mulligan” by Banshee in the Kitchen from Last Pint - NOT 31:38 - STORY OF CLOSE YOUR EYES & REAVERS LULLABY One of my most-popular songs since 2009 is a song called "Close Your Eyes". It's commonly known as "The Demon Lulllaby". The song was written in 2003 by filker, Daniel Glasser. It won Best Comedy Song in the 2008 Pegasus Awards. That's also the year I first heard the song. It was a I-Con Science Fiction Convention in Stony Brook, New York. I remember those filk circles fairly well. Now if you're not familiar with the word filk, that is the music of fandom. It's the music you hear at science fiction conventions. The word was first used as a misprint of folk music that was happening at conventions back in the '50s. I guess con goers liked the term, because next thing you know, filk circles exploded. The filk circles at I-Con were my first. My old band, Brobdingnagian Bards, were invited to be guests at I-Con back in 2002, I believe. I saw Emerald Rose was performing there and thought, "why on earth is a Celtic band like us playing at science fiction convention". So I booked us and realize con goers love Celtic music, and that we were also playing filk, with songs like "Do Virgins Taste Better" and "If I Had A Million Ducats". Any case, we were invited to the I-Con Filk Circle. We sang our songs and began building an audience. 2008 was our last year at the convention before we broke up. I don't remember who sang "Close Your Eyes". But I loved it. After we parted ways, I did an internet search to find the song. Lo and behold, I found it on the Pegasus Awards website. I contacted Daniel Glasser and asked if I could record the song. He was extremely generous to say yes. I had never played the song live when I recorded it in January 2009 for my CD Kilted For Her Pleasure on the North Shore in Louisiana at my friend Jamie Haeuser's house. Jamie recorded percussion on a couple of tracks for that album. As a lullaby, I kept the song pretty barebones, just me and the autoharp. And it worked. As I played it at shows, it was an immediate favorite. "The demons in your bed are gonna eat you up". One of my most-memorable moments was performing it a giant ballroom at Dragon Con in 2009. The stage was simple with me dressed in my black kilt, long hair flowing, the enormous sideburns, and an autoharp as I sang the song, pausing for comedic effect. (YouTube video)The audience was in tears by the end. It was a brilliant start to my solo career. The song was an obvious hit. I'm gonna play the song for you right now. And then I'll share the filk of the song in a moment. 37:10 - "Close Your Eyes" by Marc Gunn from Kilted For Her Pleasure 40:51 - STORY OF REAVER'S LULLABY In 2010, my first daughter was born--Kenzie. Having a daughter made this song even better. Not only do I like singing it to her. But there's no better way of finishing the song and stating, "If you enjoy this song, then your CD purchases help to pay for my daughter's therapy when she grows up." And it's true. Your purchases do help to pay for her therapy. So please.... Well, if she wasn't disturbed, then she has been when I filked the filk. I think it was 2014 when I first filked "Close Your Eyes". The song was already popular at my many shows. I started performing it at my Firefly Drinking Songs show at Gen Con the year before. It was well-loved. Now when I'm up on stage, I'm always looking to use things from the moment to include in the show. Some people complain about hecklers. I don't think I've ever met a heckler I didn't like. They just give me ammo to improve my show. The year before "Close Your Eyes" was a hit. But could I make it funnier? “Close your eyes and sleep There are... reavers in your dreams.” Reavers! Hey that works! I remember thinking. The reavers in your bed... I can't tell you why I decided to change the next line. But the response was mind-blowing. “The reavers in your bed… Are gonna eat your face!” The room erupted. Those who knew the original song already thought it was funny. But the visual of the horrifying reavers eating someone's face... well, it worked! Over the next few years, I tried changing the lyrics more to suit Firefly, but they never really came. Meanwhile, several Browncoats kept asking, "when are going to record that song?!" I set a Milestone on Patreon in 2017. If I raised enough money, I would record the song for a short EP. The goal was met. I sat down to record the song and ended up recording a whole bunch of Firefly songs. Lo and behold I had a new album. The album is called As Long As I'm Flyin'. It will be officially released on March 6, 2018. March is the only month that you will be able to buy a physical copy of the album online for the foreseeable future. So mark your calendar. If you want a download of the album, along with a bunch of notes about it, become a Patron of music. JOIN THE GUNN RUNNERS CLUB ON PATREON! You'll be able to buy it everywhere online. And you can stream it through Spotify. I would deeply appreciate it if you would help me spread the word. You can share this podcast. Of course, my previous Firefly album with Bedlam Bards, Firefly Drinking Songs, is on sale. If you ever wanted to experience what it's like going to a pub in Canton on Higgin's Moon, you want to own this album. 48:26 - CREDITS Thanks for listening to Atlanta Pub Songs & Stories. Living literally or metaphorically in a war is a terrible way to live. How do you keep going forward when your friends are dying all around you? Come Adventure with me and my new Kickstarter. Find out how you can keep listening to more Pub Stories on Pub Songs & Stories #253. WHO'S PLAYING IN THE PUB TODAY Welcome to Pub Stories. This is the Virtual Public House to share stories and inspiration behind my music. 0:30 - WHAT'S NEW? First, let me tell you that I am getting ready to Kickstart a new album. If you're not yet subscribed to my mailing list, please sign up so you don't miss the Kickstarter. It's for an album called Come Adventure With Me. It has some more amazing songs. I hope to announce the release of the Kickstarter on the next episode. Second, you'll note that this episode is quite a bit shorter than past shows. After much debate, I decided to once again retire the format I've been working on for the past year. There was a LOT that I loved about that format. I've actually been pretty giddy about it. But the pros just didn't outweigh the cons. You can read about my decision in my blog on my website. That said, the Pub Stories are not exactly going away. If you want to keep listening to my Pub Stories, then join my Gunn Runners Club on Patreon. I plan to release two episodes per month in the Spring and Fall season. However, they will be shorter episodes like this and they will focus almost exclusively on my music. You can get that with any pledge on Patreon, for just five buck a month. And I also plan to post at least one episode per month in the PubSong.com feed. At least through the end of the Spring season. So what happens to the stories I still have left to publish? Because I do have a few. Those will move to the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. I'll add them to every 2-3 episodes. So again, thank you for all of your support. I truly appreciate everyone who became an actual fan of THIS show. A special Thanks to my newest Gunn Runners on Patreon: Robert Eby, Mikey Mason, Nowisthewinterofourdiscord, Sue DeSimone, Bill Shields 3:13 - UPCOMING SHOWS APR 22-24: JordanCon, Atlanta, GA APR 24: Three Taverns Brewery, Decatur, GA @ 4-7 PM. May 28: The Lost Druid, Avondale Estates, GA @ I was gonna do a story about Tough Times in this show. But I realized I already highlighted it in show #217. It's even called Tough Times. 3:51 - STORY OF SERENITY VALLEY WALTZ “Serenity Valley Waltz” changed everything for me. I was not confident I could write a song on command. Heck, I'm still not. But I am MORE confident. Mikey Mason and I met at a sports bar in Chicago for FuMPFest a few years back. Mikey asked if I'd be interested in starting a podcast where we wrote a song for each episode of Firefly. I didn't think I could do it. I was nervous as hell, but I wanted to try. I wanted to flex my songwriting muscles and get better. What better way! So the first episode we watched was “Serenity”. It's the two-hour introduction to the characters. I remember when I first watched it, I was left in a kind of daze. I didn't know what to think about the episode. When I rewatched it, one of the things that stuck out to me was the introductory scene. It's a flashback to one of the most-important battles of the Unification War. The Battle of Serenity Valley is when the Alliance finally beat back the Browncoats. ⅔ of the Independents died fighting in that battle. The look of dejection on Malcolm Reynold's face when the Angels retreat is just incredible. It's also very appropriate. And then later in the episode when he talks and the season when he talks about Serenity Valley, you can tell there was trauma. The type that must be SO hard to get over. I mean, imagine fighting in a battle where ⅔ of your family and friends that you're fighting with end up dead. Hm. ⅔ is such a weird number. Imagine you're standing with 9 of your best friends and family. At the end of the battle, six of those people are no longer there. This is the type of stuff that I think about with the War in Ukraine. They're fighting hard. But the Russians are ruthless and evil. It's not just fellow soldiers there. It's family and friends. Imagine that. It makes me want to cry. That's where I was when I was writing “Serenity Valley Waltz”. Music is such a great healer. I wanted to write a song for the survivors. How did they do it? I imagine Mal, Zoe, Tracey and others sitting around the campfire singing this song, raising a glass to the fallen. The second verse is extra important to me too. Because it's a realization of the damage we can cause to one another when we don't believe. It was inspired a bit by the Me Too movement. But also by a couple friends who are very dear to me. It's also a universal truth. Sometimes we hurt those around us. Sometimes we just don't want to believe it. Either from their own ignorance or because they just don't trust you. Maybe because we're a bit dramatic at times or because they're in their own colored-glasses world. What's made a huge difference is my family. When I'm sad or hurting, I turn to them. But I learned the Serenity Prayer from my mom, who was drug and alcohol counselor. “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, The courage to change the things I can, And the wisdom to know the difference.” That's what that last verse is for me. I'm not sure Mal found that peace in the show. But he definitely built a family around him. That too is his Serenity. Fractions of a fraction of a penny, some goes to the developers as well. Below is how ya get set up. Trust me, it's REALLY cool.1. Download Blue Wallet, Wallet of Satoshi, Breez, or any lightning enabled podcast wallet. The lightning network makes it possible to send micropayments across Podcasting 2.0 apps within seconds. When Firefly was cancelled after only 11 episodes aired (way to go, Fox), it was the fan response that convinced Universal to give the film the green light. Joss rewarded us with a story that would have served as the plot line for the mythical Firefly: Season Two. When an Alliance-devoted Operative learns that River was privy to a government-destroying secret, he sets out to capture her no matter the obstacle. But when River's "trigger" reveals her super soldier fighting skills, the Serenity crew has some questions of their own. Will the Operative capture the Tams before our crew can reveal the truth about Reavers? Kristen and Mike discuss the reception of the film for non-Browncoats, what Mal believes in, and which characters were under-served. PLUS! What's next for Kristen and Mike?
We're joined by Carolyn as we discuss topics including Hanamikoji, The Thing Infection at Outpost 31 and Designated Survivor, as well as Firefly Adventures Brigands and Browncoats, Mistborn the Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson, music news and reviews including review on the latest albums by Issa and James Christian. Raze the land and boil the sea; you can't take this week's podcast from... us? What is it about this _Joss Whedon_ franchise that has survived cancellation and a lack of conclusion? Why is it that so many are such adamant fans of this short-lived series? This week, we're talking about fans of Firefly, the aptly-named _Browncoats_! Next week, we'll be tackling our final topic of the season: Disney fans (and its a doozy)! ## Episode outline ### [Last Episode's](http://fanthropological.com/e/34-james-bond-fans/) Famous Last Words **Tom:** Why do people care about this show? I guess Nathan Fillion is cool... Why do you care so much about it? Get over it! **Z:** What is the place of duelling in the world of firefly? How common is it? **G:** Is it really that good? **T:** Where's the second season? Why hasn't it been kickstarted? ### Fandom Facts **Origins:** > "Firefly" is a space Western set 500 years in the future, in the aftermath of a civil war between rebels known as Independents (or Browncoats) and a tyrannical conglomerate called the Alliance. The Independents lose the war, and under Alliance control, corporations rule openly; > > — [SFGate - When Fox canceled 'Firefly,' it ignited an Internet fan base whose burning desire for more led to 'Serenity'](http://www.sfgate.com/entertainment/article/When-Fox-canceled-Firefly-it-ignited-an-2628890.php) Firefly was a Sci-fi Western show broadcast in 2002. Created by Joss Whedon, only 11 of the 14 recorded episodes were aired in its original US run on the FOX network before the show was cancelled. Due to DVD sales, the show was deemed successful enough to have a movie produced, _Serenity_. It stars several fan favourite actors such as Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres, Alan Tudyk, Morena Baccarin, Adam Baldwin, Jewel Staite, Sean Maher, Summer Glau, and the late Ron Glass. **Names:** Browncoats, ["dubbed ... in honor of the doomed-but-noble Independents"](http://www.sfgate.com/entertainment/article/When-Fox-canceled-Firefly-it-ignited-an-2628890.php) in the show. **Most Active:** Firefly fandom was most active around [October of 2005](https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&q=%2Fm%2F014v3t,%2Fm%2F02j9_2), which is just after the release of the movie, _Serenity_. Otherwise, interest in the show has been on a very slow decline with about half as much interest now as five years ago. **Size of Fandom:** We would estimate the size of the fandom as more than 200 000 people; After the show's cancellation, FOX released a DVD set of the show which sold more than 200 000 copies — enough to get the movie greenlit. **Fan activity:** Mostly shipping characters, as in other fandoms. During the early 2000's, "Shindigs" (informal gatherings) were popular. **Fanfics:** Archive of our own has over 5600, and Fanfiction.net has over 7200. ### Are you in, or out? **T is in.** **Z is out.** **G is out.** ### This week's spotlight **[Can't Stop the Serenity](http://www.cantstoptheserenity.com/)** Can't Stop the Serenity is a group that organizes screenings of Serenity for charity, usually [Equality Now](https://www.equalitynow.org/), an organization working for equality for women and girls. Since 2006, they have raised over $1 mil USD, and it is entirely run by volunteers! > We share the ideal that people should “aim to misbehave,” if it absolutely means doing the right thing. We hold true that anyone can make a difference, and no effort is insignificant. Further we believe that a government shouldn't destroy the rights of its citizens, regardless of sex. Basically, we watch our shows, support our causes and allow our voices to be heard because we live in countries which allow us to do so. But we realise that there are other people out there who can not do what we can do. > > — [Can't Stop the Serenity](http://www.cantstoptheserenity.com/) **[The Race Against Time](http://raceagainsttime.
