In this Take 1 Episode I share a reading of Ch. 25 from 'The Perspectives Files' where the protagonists visit 1962 Disneyland to learn about Walt Disney's attempts to compete with Universal City Studios for consumer entertainment. This book has been a lot of fun to write, and is a way for me to share how important group behavior is to understanding our society. Being a Fan of Disney: The Book is available on Amazon in Kindle, Paperback, and Hardback versions, with an Audible version forthcoming. The book is available at https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CM427LF3/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1698697971&sr=8-1. This has been a passion project of mine for a long time and I am very happy it is available to fellow Disney fans! I hope you enjoy and please engage with the book and activities on www.SharedPerspectives.org. The Perspectives Files, about two teenagers that learn they are part of an organization charged with protecting the world's future by monitoring and learning from people's decisions, is available on Kindle Vella at https://www.amazon.com/kindle-vella/story/B0CLKW7KB1. You can follow along with the class, podcast, Take 1 episodes, and interviews/visits by subscribing to the show wherever you get your podcasts, following me on Twitter/X @chavardphd, joining the Facebook public group @BeingaFanofDisney, and by visiting www.SharedPerspectives.org. We're starting a new director series, and this year we're watching the films of one of Hollywood's most controversial and iconic directors: Spike Lee. This week, we check out his first joint, a sex comedy that's shockingly progressive and thoughtful for its time. It's refreshing for one of the greatest low-budget films of all time to be far more thoughtful than most comedies of its era. And it's incredibly funny to boot, provided you remember it's 1986 and off-color jokes cross the line more often than not. It's not the greatest movie, but it's a great start for one of the best directors of all time. Please baby, pleasebaby, please baby baby please join us as we watch 1986's She's Gotta Have It this week on Macintosh & Maud Haven't Seen What?! CLICK TO SUBSCRIBE ON YOUR FAVORITE PODCATCHER CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of police murders, police brutality, racism, sex, racial tension, alcoholism. Our Spike Lee series continues with, perhaps, Spike's greatest movie and only his third full-length feature. It's a movie so poignant and real that it can literally change lives, and we don't say that lightly. Of course, Hollywood was terrified it would incite violence and rioting, which is preposterous because its real message is how to navigate living together, both in peace and violence. Spike doesn't ask easy questions and doesn't expect easy answers; he just wants to lay it all out in front of us. And, in the meantime, he gives us a whole crew of unique, well-drawn characters that, even when caricatures, still show a sense of the real world and all of its struggles. We step into 1984 with a true children's classic that was bound to scar so many young minds. Because this week's movie is a meditation on grief, loss, and how we intertwine with stories to help heal, and it's also full of really cool practical special effects. But while our director may have made the greatest submarine movie of all time, his ability to sort through the nuances of a really beautiful story was kind of a mess. For a 90 minute movie, this drags, and it's not only because the story is lost in translation. Yet the real travesty is missing the second half of the story, which pulls everything full circle in a truly beautiful, wonderful way. CLICK TO SUBSCRIBE ON YOUR FAVORITE PODCATCHER CONTENT WARNING: Misogyny, murder, STDs. 1985's movie is perhaps the role Chevy Chase was born to play. Imagine a man with a shoestring disguise budget, the affable charm of the mediocre white man, and an absolute disdain for everyone around him. That's Irwin Fletcher, and Chevy is absolutely fantastic in the role. Unfortunately, Hollywood couldn't escape the thought that they needed to make a silly comedy and not a sarcastic send-up of noir. This movie needed to let Chevy be Chevy and turn on all of his sarcastic charm. Instead, it relies a bit too much on bits, ignoring the mystery structure, and the one-liners outshine the fun of the characters. We continue our 80's Grab Bag with the true grandfather of all high fantasy movies, or at least the ultra-violent ones. Before Game of Thrones, before The Witcher, there was one man, bigger than 5 combined and able to crush his enemies, see them driven before him, and listen to the lamentations of their women. His name was Arnold Schwarzenegger, and before he become a bona fide movie star, he took on a cult classic role in this week's movie. No, the movie's not what you'd call “good,” but it's also doing more with what it has than a lot of similar movies of its time. Director John Milius didn't have the resources to hire ILM or call up the artists behind Alien and Blade Runner - he had to find a way to make it all work. And even though there's stretches where the movie's laughable, there's also some true badassery hidden within. Our next film in the 80's Grab Bag series centers on a controversial story around a major public figure. Namely, why Faye Dunaway was ever given a chance at stardom. Because this film is a disaster of the most epic proportions. The writing? It's god-awful, making an incredibly complex and difficult story of childhood trauma into a laughable soap opera. The directing? It is truly, ineffably bad, bouncing from moment to moment with editing that would be side-eyed by z-movie directors from the 60's. And the cast? Never let it be said they're not committed (except you, Steve Forrest, no excuses), but literally nobody is able to figure out what the hell is going on. Forget about the tell-all aspect; this movie is a trainwreck of the highest order. Hide all your wire hangers as we talk about Mommie Dearest this week on Macintosh & Maud Haven't Seen What?! Our last movie for the series is so good, we just don't have much to say about it. Get a story about two strong Southern women, wrap it in a beautiful plot about a pushover finally finding her own strength in the world, and give the bow of Jessica Tandy being the best storyteller ever. That's all you need for this beautiful story about friendship, love, and the South. The cast is incredible, the writing is impeccable, and the directing is…well, it's exactly what it needs to be. In fact, the only problem is the fact that this movie wasn't able to get to the deeper romance between its two leads - and even then, it's still pretty romantic. This week we're back with another appearance from one of the show's most polarizing figures, but this time, she's not the issue. No, Barbra actually brings some nuance and care to this movie, but the problem is the actual movie itself, or rather, the novel it's based on. There's a whole lot that has to be unpacked in this story, and much of it more thoughtfully and carefully than anyone involved really had time for. It's not hard to see why this movie was a hit, for sure, but Barbra's wearing too many hats, and even an all-time great performance from Nick Nolte can't save this movie from sinking under the weight of all its trauma voyeurism and horrible ethics. This week we're discussing a film that's one of the most beautiful messes you'll ever see. Beautiful, because it revels in medieval mythology while telling a story of redemption in our modern lives. Messy, because our director didn't seem to care about creating a consistent, thorough world for his characters to live in. It's a movie that doesn't hold up as well on deeper scrutiny, and yet also hits you right in the heart with a truly lovely story and incredibly strong performances from some of the best actors in the business. This week, we're talking about a thriller that's a remake of a classic thriller by one of the most famous directors in American movies. And it's all because of Steven Spielberg. Well, OK, it's also because Martin Scorsese saw the chance to make a hit movie, and wow does he deliver. There's nothing particularly special about this week's movie on paper - it's a well-thought, taut thriller. But it's Marty's flourishes and powerhouse performances from Robert DeNiro and Juliette Lewis that propelled this film to Oscar status. This week on On Story we're joined by David Self, the writer behind films like Road to Perdition and Thirteen Days. In this episode, Self dissects his career breaking into the industry to writing crime and historical dramas. David Self, having been born into an itinerant family of community college and high school teachers, he broke with family tradition and spent most of his waking hours trying to break into Hollywood. In 1994 he found success and was hired to pen the remake of the 1963 film The Haunting for Steven Spielberg. His credits also include Road to Perdition, Thirteen Days, and Wolfman. Crime and thriller film, Road to Perdition, is an adaptation of the DC Comics graphic novel series of the same name. Starring Tom Hanks, it follows the story of a mob enforcer's son in 1930s Illinois who witnesses a murder, forcing him and his father to take to the road down a path of redemption and revenge. Thirteen Days is a tale of truths about how the Kennedy administration struggled to contain the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. The Haunting is a story about how a study of fear escalates into a heart-stopping nightmare for a professor and three subjects trapped in a mysterious mansion. Audio of the 1984 opinion of the Supreme Court in Sony Corporation of America v. Universal City Studios, Inc. Do you remember Sony Betamax? Back in the 80s, Sony Corporation of America manufactured and sold the "Betamax" home video tape recorder (VTR). Since Universal City Studios owned the copyrights to many of the broadcast tv programs that consumers used Betamax to record, Universal sued Sony for copyright infringement - seeking monetary damages, an equitable accounting of profits, and an injunction against the manufacturing and marketing of the VTR's. The District Court ruled against Universal, holding that the noncommercial home use of recorded material broadcast over the public airwaves was a fair use of copyrighted works, not copyright infringement. The District Court further concluded that, even if the home use of a VTR had been considered an infringement, Sony could not be held liable as contributory infringers. But, the Court of Appeals reversed, holding Sony liable for contributory infringement. The question before the Supreme Court in this case was whether Sony's sale of "Betamax" video tape recorders to the general public constituted contributory infringement of copyrighted public broadcasts under the Copyright Act. The Court held that "[t]he sale of the VTR's to the general public does not constitute contributory infringement of [Universal's] copyrights." And American Gen X kids like me were able to continue recording episodes of Family Ties and The Love Boat. Access this SCOTUS opinion and other essential case information on Oyez. It's not too often you get a movie that stars two of the most outstanding and strong actors of a generation that is just plain boring. But this week's film is more than up to the task, with a political thriller that isn't very political and is absolutely not thrilling. To be fair, most political cover-up stories fall apart before the conclusion, but this movie ups the ante by ruining the plot within the first 10 or 15 minutes. The remaining two plus hours is spent just rehashing plot points and trying to save a script that was dead on arrival. It's not that this movie's bad, or badly made - it's so utterly meh that it'll bore you to tears. Jones (1970). God lytting!

Hello podcast listeners, I'm Barbara Morgan and you're listening to Austin Film Festival's On Story. This week on On Story we're taking a trip out west with Babaloo Mandel and Lowel Ganz, the screenwriting duo behind the classic American Western comedy, CITY SLICKERS. Lowell Ganz and Marc “Babaloo” Mandel are long-time screenwriting partners that began their careers writing for comedic television in the 1970s. The two New Yorkers met in a Hollywood comedy club where Mandel worked as a joke writer. Having both served on the writing staff for the sitcom THE ODD COUPLE they discovered that they had a lot in common, including their off-beat sense of humor and a love of Billy Wilder. Their creative partnership began with collaborations on Laverne and Shirley and the duo made their feature screenplay debut with the black comedy NIGHT SHIFT. They would go on to write hits such as PARENTHOOD, A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN, and the subject of today's episode, CITY SLICKERS. I spoke with the pair at a year-round event presented by the Austin Film Festival. CLICK TO SUBSCRIBE ON YOUR FAVORITE PODCATCHER CONTENT WARNING: Sexism, sex work, small-town prejudice. Hey, y'all, welcome back to 80's Ladies! This week Vin LaBate (The Chimera, The Exquisite Lich) joins us for one of the most wholesome films ever made about sex work. Seriously, we kick off the movie with Jim Nabors, Gomer Pyle himself, and even his character isn't a full on ridiculous caricature. This isn't a perfect movie, by any stretch of the imagination. The story is a whole mess, it's very long and strangely complicated for a movie built on a premise and a couple of plot points. But what a premise, and what a cast - this movie is stacked with star power, even if those stars don't always live up to their hype. There's never a truly boring moment in the movie, and that's saying something considering how much of a hot mess this movie is. Make your reservation with Miss Mona and head on out to the Chicken Ranch as we continue our 80's Ladies series with The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas! You can email us with feedback at macintoshandmaud@gmail.com, or you can connect with us on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. Details, credits, errata: For Holy Week, we have decided to be a bit daring and look at Martin Scorsese’s 1988 film The Last Temptation of Christ, the much-maligned work of two Christians, Scorsese and Paul Schrader, based on the work of a third, Nikos Kazantzakis, who published Last Temptation in 1955, two years before his death. With us is dear friend and author of The World Only Spins Forward and The Method, Isaac Butler. We re-recommend Alissa’s excellent interview with Schrader here, which we also mentioned during our episode about his film First Reformed. (Also check out episode 10, if you like, in which we discuss Scorsese’s Silence.)Our image for the week is Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s oil-on-oil painting The Procession to Calvary, made freely available through Wikimedia Commons, which Sam thought was appropriate because it’s all about the circumstances around Jesus and the cross, just like this movie. Jesus is actually a little hard to clock in this painting despite being in its exact center. Bruegel died in 1569 just as the Dutch War of Independence — also known as the Eighty Years’ War — broke out after years of bloodshed and public executions of the kind Jesus would have seen and, eventually, been subject to. Massacres, executions, and biblical scenes feature prominently in his work; it’s profoundly appropriate for him to paint such a sweeping work about the most famous execution in the Western world. Our theme song is Louis Armstrong and His Hot 5’s Muskrat Ramble, made freely available by the Boston Public Library and audio engineering shop George Blood, LP through the Internet Archive. The Last Temptation of Christ is copyright 1988 Universal City Studios and Cineplex Odeon Films Canada. A pioneer of brain surgery, he was the first exclusive neurosurgeon and the first person to describe Cushing's disease. He wrote a biography of William Osler in three volumes. In the beginning of the 20th century, Dr. Cushing developed many of the basic surgical techniques for operating on the brain. This established him as one of the foremost leaders and experts in the field. Under his influence neurosurgery became a new and autonomous surgical discipline. He was the world's leading teacher of neurosurgeons in the first decades of the 20th century. Arguably, Cushing's greatest contribution came with his introduction to North America of blood pressure measurement. Cushing's name is commonly associated with his most famous discovery, Cushing's disease. In 1912 he reported in a study an endocrinological syndrome caused by a malfunction of the pituitary gland which he termed "polyglandular syndrome." He published his findings in 1932 as "The Basophil Adenomas of the Pituitary Body and Their Clinical Manifestations: pituitary Basophilism". Cushing developed many surgical instruments that are in use today, most notably Cushing forceps and the Cushing ventricular cannula. Ethan Bishop, the police officer in charge of the besieged Precinct 9, Division 13, in John Carpenter's Howard Hawks-inspired, 1976 film, Assault on Precinct 13. This was one of the few heroic starring roles for a black actor in an action film of the 1970s outside of the blaxploitation genre. Prior to his role as Lt. Bishop, Stoker appeared in several blaxploitation films, often playing police detectives. Among these films were Abby, Combat Cops, and Sheba, Baby, in which he played Pam Grier's love interest. He was born in Houston, Texas- https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Lightning_Bear- https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0510019/7 Oct 1885 - Niels Henrik David Bohr, Danish physicist who made foundational contributions to understanding atomic structure and quantum theory, for which he received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1922. Bohr was also a philosopher and a promoter of scientific research. Bohr developed the Bohr model of the atom, in which he proposed that energy levels of electrons are discrete and that the electrons revolve in stable orbits around the atomic nucleus but can jump from one energy level (or orbit) to another. Although the Bohr model has been supplanted by other models, its underlying principles remain valid. He conceived the principle of complementarity: that items could be separately analysed in terms of contradictory properties, like behaving as a wave or a stream of particles. The notion of complementarity dominated Bohr's thinking in both science and philosophy. He predicted the existence of a new zirconium-like element, which was named hafnium, after the Latin name for Copenhagen, where it was discovered. Later, the element bohrium was named after him. He was involved with the establishment of CERN and the Research Establishment Risø of the Danish Atomic Energy Commission and became the first chairman of the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics in 1957. It would be an experiment, to study their minds. Terrible things would be done to them – awful things; completely hopeless – until the victims turn everything on its head." From our early days after the end of Prohibition through today’s Bourbon boom, we're proud to be a part of American Whiskey history. Our podcast begins with the five Shapira brothers, who began as investors in a small distillery, and grew to become one of Bourbon’s leading families. Convo By Design is recorded in the Living Kitchen Studio and this week, you are going to hear from an amazing talent and wonderful guy. This is Peter Gurski, set decorator and the man behind the look and feel of Will & Grace. Peter is a multifaceted creative meaning he is also an interior designer and has held multiple other roles within the art department including production designer and art director. But this is special for me and I hope you enjoy this conversation with Peter. He invited me to the Universal City Studios to walk the set, and talk a little bit. We talked a lot about the business, his role and vision for the reboot of an immensely popular show with extremely vocal fans. Peter talks about the show and more specifically, the characters who you got to know between 1998 and 2006, now reintroduced in 2017 and guess what, they have changed, just like you and me. Peter and his team imagined their personality and life development but also incorporated who they were to deliver the same characters 10 years later. Brilliant. Peter captured the past work of set decorator Melinda Ritz who worked on the first 10 seasons and moved from there. We walked and talked and you can see images from the set on social media and make sure to check out the YouTube channel for a video from our time together. If you like this episode of the podcast, and I hope that you do. Why not subscribe to the show? On this week’s On Story we’re tracing the history of modern film comedies back to a singular movie celebrating it’s 40th anniversary. Grab your toga and your ‘college’ sweatshirt as comedy writers reflect on Animal House’s lasting influence. We’ll also hear from SNL alum and Adam Sandler collaborator Tim Herlihy, who used the National Lampoon movies as a model to write some of the biggest comedies of the 1990’s. 40 years ago National Lampoon’s Animal House changed American comedies and shaped people’s expectations of the college experience. The frat comedy was an instant success when in was released in 1978 and remains one of the most quotable films. Beverly Hills Cop writer Daniel Petrie, Jr and Role Models writer Tim Dowling explored Animal House’s lasting legacy at the 2015 Austin Film Festival in a conversation moderated by filmmaker Roy Rutngamlug. One direct influence that came from the National Lampoon’s continued collaboration was Tim Herlihy’s work with Adam Sandler. In the 1990’s, Herlihy co-wrote a string of successful films that launched Sandler into an unlikely leading man. Some of his writing credits include Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, and The Wedding Singer. He conceived of most of those films while writing at Saturday Night Live. I spoke with Tim Herlihy at the 23rd annual Austin Film Festival in 2016. Clips of Animal House courtesy of Universal City Studios, Inc. Muitas vezes oportunidades surgem disfarçadas de ameaças e lutamos para acabar com elas em vez de abraçá-las. Conheça um pouco da história do produtoras que lutaram contra o VHS e das Editoras que lutaram contra as locadoras de livros mas acabaram se beneficiando como nunca por terem perdido essas brigas. Michael Sloan was born into a British theatrical family and raised amid the smell of greasepaint and the sound of applause. Bob and Suzanne’s conversation with Michael starts with his youth as a budding actor and his early adventures writing and producing his own independent feature films. Michael’s story then demonstrates his unique creative instincts as he describes how he got his first major primetime television break writing for Columbo, a credit that propelled him toward a meteoric career path at Universal City Studios and beyond. Sloan’s credits soon ranged from BJ & The Bear (where he gave Bob his first primetime writing gig) and Quincy to McCloud, Battlestar Gallactica, Sword of Justice, and The Return of The Man From Uncle... to name only a few of hundreds! His was the producing and writing “juice” behind unforgettable shows like Kung Fu: The Legend Continues and the contemporary Alfred Hitchcock Presents. And as if his hundreds of writing and producing credits weren’t enough, Michael was also the creator of one of television’s most highly-acclaimed suspense and action series, The Equalizer—now a major motion picture starring Denzel Washington set to appear in theaters worldwide. Almost as “throwaway” in the interview, Michael reveals that his wife—actress Melissa Sue Anderson of Little House on the Prairie fame—first suggested Denzel Washington in the role of The Equalizer’s “Robert McCall” a full seven years before the movie went into production…and then we learn that Michael’s new novel The Equalizer has just debuted in bookstores everywhere. With great wit and humor, the lessons Michael Sloan shares in this podcast are truly bricks of gold on the road to Hollywood success!
