Ich identifiziere mich, aber 1900 ist immer wichtig, wo geboren. In San Francisco. AOK du bist in San Francisco geboren und dein Name ist Mervyn Leroy. 1:01 Und was ist der Nachname Leroy? Das ist natürlich sehr schade, ja, aber was er ist, er ist jetzt ein Obdachloser mit dir und ihr zusammen sucht nach einem Haus und ihr findet kein Haus. Ihr findet aber eine Bleibe in einem Militär Zelt welches aufgestellt wird halt von eben als naja als Nothilfe Notunterkunft und ihr lebt dort 6 Monate bis dahin Vater wieder einen Job gefunden hat und ihr euch wieder n Eigenheim irgendwo im neu aufgebauten San Francisco leisten könnt. 4:46 OK, verstehe ja soweit so traumatisch bisher. Soweit sehr traumatisch, aber dieser dieses Trauma soll dich eigentlich nur stärker machen, denn es vergehen wieder Jahre und mit mit mit 12 im Jahr 1912 fängst du an Zeitungen zu verkaufen, du wirst so n typischer Extrablatt Extrablatt. 5:05 Ja, alles klar, weiß ich sofort Bescheid. Hast bestimmt auch so ne so ne so ne. So ne Mütze. Ja ja und so ein kariertes, so ne Karte, kleine Weste und fliege um. Genau, und du rennst durch die ganze Stadt und verkaufst deine Zeitung. Und Kniestrümpfen brauche ich noch. Ganz wichtig, ganz so stellt noch. 5:22 Naja, jedenfalls lässt die Stadt und verkaufst. Überall. Deine Zeitung an die Fisch Märkten, du verkaufst die irgendwo bei der Polizei, bei der Polizei, du verkaufst überall wo Menschen sind, dort läufst du hin und verkaufst deine Zeitungen. Einer deiner ersten Rollen wird ein Stück, wo du Tom Sawyer spielst. Das ist aber direkt schon was Großes. Also. Direkt, was groß ist. Du bist sehr gut in dem Imitieren von Chaplin, das so, dass es in San Francisco einen Wettbewerb gibt, einen Wettbewerb mit 1000 Teilnehmern, alle verkleidet als Chaplin, alle imitieren. 7:43 Berlin und du gewinnst diesen Wettbewerb, weil du der beste Chaplin imitator bist und du bekommst in einem Theater quasi eine Rolle als als den Hauptpreis und du darfst dort mitspielen. Alles klar verstehe. Mit 15 Jahren und du verkaufst natürlich nebenbei auch noch die Zeitungen. 8:00 Das hört sich finanziell für den 15 jährigen gut an. Das ist tatsächlich so. Ich werde jetzt fulltime Schauspieler. OK. Und was du machst, du tust dich mit einem Pianisten zusammen, der heißt Kleid Cooper und zusammen macht ihr so ne Art Stand up Comedy mit Piano. 8:34 Und das ist ja nichts Außergewöhnliches, so wahrscheinlich. Das gibt es häufig und ihr merkt so Scheiße, das gibt es wirklich überall und ihr versucht quasi damit durchzustarten. Die bucht man mittlerweile mit dazu, quasi zu irgendwelchen größeren Shows und vielleicht seid ihr irgendwann mal sogar schon so ne bekannte Show wo man gerne hingeht. Problem aber in Coopers Familie stirbt jemand, das heißt er hört auf, er zieht zurück nach irgendwo und lässt dich zurück und du denkst dir so hey ich hab mit Houdini Sachen gemacht oder bei Houdini mit Houdini Sachen gemacht, ich bin quasi der beste Chaplin nach Chaplin ich geh nach Hollywood. 9:53 OK, das ist natürlich ein Sprung. Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we are talking to Kiki Ebsen, daughter of the great Buddy Ebsen. Now, originally, I was going to say the great actor Buddy Ebsen and he definitely was a great actor. But after talking to Kiki we learned that not only did her father act but he also danced, he sang, he wrote books, he was a master sailor of catamarans and he had great comic skills. Some of this we might have known from shows like The Beverly Hillbillies or Barnaby Jones but did you know Buddy Ebsen's career began when he was discovered by newsman Walter Winchell with his sister as part of a dancing team? Or he was cast in the original The Wizard of Oz but wasn't able to be on screen due to reasons we discuss with Kiki? Or that he was the test case for Walt Disney and modern animatronics? No? Well keep listening. We spoke to Kiki about her upcoming June residency at the El Portal Theater in Los Angeles each Friday in June for her one woman show about her father, My Buddy, The Other Side of Oz. Part memoir, part cabaret and part tribute to her father, the show showcases Kiki's storytelling but her singing as well. It's a love of music that led her to Cal Arts which then led in quick succession a job on the road with the band Chicago and then gigs with Tracy Chapman, Boz Scaggs, Christopher Cross & Al Jarreau among others. Working as a professional musician for other people led Kiki to record nine of her own solo albums in the past decade or so and just recently licensing her songs from the 80s to a label who will release them later this year. Along the way we talk about shows & movies like Matt Houston, Davy Crockett, Tom Sawyer, The Kent Chronicles as well as actors Lee Meriwether, Mike Connors, James Arness and more. J.C. Hulsey has lived in Midlothian, Texas over thirty years. He's a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He has been married for 59 years. He enjoys Western movies and TV Shows, (especially the older ones) and reading about Mail-Order Brides. He is also the owner of six cats (all stray cats, showed up on the back porch) and one dog (rescue dog) He worked for 33 years at Bell Helicopter. He served in the USAF for five years, and the Air National Guard for four years. He started writing songs in his early twenties. He recorded a couple of songs in the late 1960s. He started writing poetry in the 1970s to share with others. He self-published them on Amazon in 2013. He still felt the need to write something different. He tried writing a book in the 1970s, but it was never finished. In 2014, he felt the urge to write a Western novel. However, he needed something different than what was on the market. What about a young Christian Gunfighter? That book turned into a series of seven books that won First Place for Best Westen Series in 2015 from Texas Association of Authors. it’s just like Mad Men but with Roanld Reagan instead of Don Draper! Because on this episode of This is the President, we delve into an entirely new collection of presidential recordings - the Ronald Reagan Dictaphone Library. For the kids out there, a dictaphone was a device that you’d use to record letters so your secretary would type them while you were drinking highballs with the newest steno pool employee on your lap. Except not in Reagan’s case. Maybe while Emmanuel Lewis was sitting in Nancy’s lap. But we digress…. On the morning of March 3, 1981, a newly inagurated Ronald Reagan was recording a number of letters to supporters and well-wishers. One of these well wishers was Buddy Ebsen, better known as Jed Clampett from The Beverly Hillbillies - and a long time Republican. But Buddy wasn’t just wishing his pal Ronald Reagan have a great presidency - no there was more on Jed Clampett’s agenda. You see, Mr. Ebsen had just produced his first big time play, “Turn to the Left.” And was inviting the President and Nancy to the opening in California. So, what starts out as a normal letter dictated by Roanld Reagan on March 3, 1981, soon takes a turn, as we discover that shortly after writing ths letter, Reagan tried to pull a few strings for his old friend Jed.

If you had a favorite television show growing up, there’s a pretty good chance Pamelyn Ferdin appeared on it. In addition to several series of her own, Pamelyn made memorable guest appearances on such programs as Star Trek, The Brady Bunch, The Monkees, Bewitched, Gunsmoke, Family Affair, and The Flying Nun. She played Felix Unger’s daughter, Edna, on multiple episodes of The Odd Couple, and is perhaps best known as the voice of Lucy Van Pelt in Peanuts TV specials and the feature film, A Boy Named Charlie Brown. Pamelyn was the busiest child actor in Hollywood for the better part of a decade, performing in more than 200 television episodes, about 30 feature films and made-for-TV movies, and hundreds of television commercials, nearly all of them before she was out of her teens. As an actress, she performed with some of the legends of show business, acting alongside Jack Benny, Walter Brennan, John Cassavetes, Bing Crosby, Clint Eastwood, Gene Kelly, Elsa Lanchester, Shirley MacLaine, Dean Martin, Ray Milland, Maureen O’Sullivan, Geraldine Page, Vincent Price, Tony Randall, Cliff Robertson, and Jonathan Winters; as a singer, she introduced songs by such celebrated songwriters as Burt Bacharach and Hal David, Sammy Cahn and Burton Lane, Rod McKuen, and Richard and Robert Sherman; and as a dancer, she performed on stage and screen with Buddy Ebsen, Jerry Lewis, and Debbie Reynolds. She enjoyed the experience of working in one capacity or another with entertainment icons Walt Disney, Steven Spielberg, Charles M. Schulz, Dr. Seuss, Chuck Jones, Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera, and the world’s most famous four-legged TV star, Lassie. Pamelyn began doing commercials at the age of three and graduated to feature films at the age of four, playing Shirley MacLaine’s and Dean Martin’s daughter in the hit comedy What a Way to Go! By the age of six she was the busiest child actor in the business.

The Disney Family Album was an original documentary series produced by The Disney Channel in the mid 1980’s. Episodes aired from June 1984 until January 1986 with each episode running about 30 minutes. They were produced by Michael Bonifer along with Carden Walker, the son of Card Walker (The third Disney Company leader after Walt and Roy Disney). The series lasted just 20 episodes and was designed to take a look at the artist and performance that shaped Disney Studios and Disney Parks, most of whom worked directly with Walt. The people featured created some of the most iconic Disney characters, movies and attractions ever developed. Narrated by Buddy Ebsen, the series is a true history lesson and provides the perfect time capsule with incredible insight and behind the scenes stories. In the greater scheme of things, the timing of these 20 episodes was perfect; any earlier or later in Disney History, and they may not have happened. Of the 20 episodes produced, 7 showcased one of Walt’s Nine Old Men: Marc Davis, Frank Thomas, Ollie Johnston, Eric Larson, Wolfgang (or Woolie) Rytherman, Milt Kahl and Ward Kimball – all featuring stories directly from them! Only Les Clark and John Lounsbery, who both passed away in the 1970’s, are missing from Walt’s Nine Old Men. Other episodes featured Disney Legends like The Sherman Brothers, Ken Anderson, Annette Funicello, and Jim Macdonald to name just a few. One episode focused on Voice Actors, while another Disneyland Designers and WED Imagineers including interviews with Herb Ryman, Bill Evans, John Hench, and a very young Tony Baxter. Disney Family Album was produced by MICA. The master tapes were given to Disney sometime after the series was cancelled in 1986. Most of the original footage was lost in the Disney tape vault, which was not digitized. While some has been found, most of the original footage and the finished first episode, “Clarence Ducky Nash”, was not found. The remainder of the episodes come from Disney Vault replays captured on VHS in the 1990’s. The Clarence Nash episode was not replayed in the 1990’s. Brian McEntee and John Lasseter are credited with the “Title Design”, which of course, was computer generated; the timing is very interesting. Shortly after the production of the title design in early 1984, John was fired from Disney for promoting computer animation making this title design one of his last Disney credits.   Of course, he joined Lucasfilms Computer Graphic Group which was later sold to Steve Jobs and became Pixar in 1986 – we all know the story from there. Blake Edwards' 1961 classic, "Breakfast at Tiffany's," is a madcap romantic romp about an extraordinarily well-dressed New York City courtesan and her dapper male prostitute neighbor. This movie has it all: call girls, gigolos, yellow face, cat abuse, statutory rape, the mafia, and even O.J. (Berman, not Simpson). Audrey Hepburn plays Holly Golightly, a quirky victim of child molestation who re-enacts her victimhood over and over again by prostituting herself to older men who provide her with resources. Holly also helps facilitate the continued activities of an incarcerated narcotics kingpin, Sally Tomato. George Peppard plays Paul Varjak, a writer-turned-paid-dick-slinger who hasn’t produced anything in years until meeting his muse, Holly. Paul initially pretends like he understands and accepts Holly for who she is, but needs her to change everything about herself in order for them to live happily ever after. Mickey Rooney plays Mr. Yunioshi, an ultra-racist caricature of a Japanese person who was so offensive everyone involved was forced to apologize for decades. Buddy Ebsen plays Doc Golightly, a pedophiliac Texan who married 14-year-old Holly and tracked her down in New York years after her escape. We are supposed to think he’s a good dude and feel sorry for him because he first pulled Holly and her brother out of the gutter before inviting her into his marital bed. The show is also heard worldwide Saturday afternoons at 4:30-5:30 on Satellite radio www.yesterdayUSA.comMilt Larsen lives on Santa Barbara's picturesque Mesa overlooking the Harbor with his wife, award winning costume designer Arlene, and their two lovable mutts, Angel and Wizard.COLLECTOR/HISTORIANIN ADDITION TO HIS OTHER INTERESTS Milt Larsen is a well-known theatre historian and record collector.  Many consider the closing of the famed Palace Theater in New York in 1932 as the final curtain for vaudeville.  At that time Milt was only one year old.  He became interested in the vaudeville era as a kid and loved talking to as many of the “old-timers” still around at the time.   He was an aspiring comedy writer and was fascinated by the comedians of the past.  He started collecting recordings of showbusiness personalities as a teenager.  His hobby grew into a passion and his collection of thousands of vintage 78's and LP's is a treasure trove of variety history.Through his magical family he met and got to know famous people who were stars long before he was born.  Working as a writer for Ralph Edwards TV Productions he was often called upon to keep subjects of his “This Is Your Life” TV show occupied while the production team set up their surprise for the subject.  Edwards knew his young writer was enamored with the older stars and enjoyed talking to them.  Thus Milt entertained legends like Buster Keaton, Stan Laurel, Ed Wynn, Mack Sennett, George Burns, Jack Benny and many others.   While still in High School he worked as a record archivist for Eddie Cantor.  Veteran stars Milton Berle, Bob Hope, Buddy Ebsen and Steve Allen often called upon Larsen for his consultation on songs and variety acts.He has always loved radio and his first job as a professional writer was with the ABC Radio network. It was a daytime audience participation show with variety acts and a 25-piece house orchestra.  While still a teenager he was the weekly guest with radio personality Jim Hawthorne on a CBS radio program that featured milt's old records and commentary by CBS founder Andrew White.His weekend national radio shows recorded in his studio on the premises of the Magic Castle in Hollywood.  His facilities house his huge record collection and his studio is designed specifically to play the old 78-RPM vintage recordings.   His studio console turntables were originally installed at the NBC Radio City studios at Sunset and Vice in Hollywood.    The shows are recorded using the newest state of the art MAC computer technology which includes to ability to clean up the snap, crackles and pops associated with the old records. The concept of the show is that younger generations have never heard samples of the great performers of the past.  Like an old joke, if you never heard it before --- it's brand new with that in mind he leads you down the path to discovery.   He introduces young people of today to a time of laughter and silly songs mixed in with some of the greatest music of all time.   Oscar winning songwriter Richard M. Sherman (The Sherman Brothers – Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, It's a small World After All etc) is a guest on every show talking about the great songwriters of Tin Pan Alley.  His other guest is a character known as Professor Hockmann, the world's oldest magician and vaudevillian who always plays just one of those really old acoustical records from Milt's collection.
