Have you ever thought about what happens to all the food, which, while perfectly edible, simply doesn't make it to the table? This week, the Green Desk delves into the growing issues of food waste, food insecurity and social isolation, and discusses how they can all be remedied by making better use of the perfectly good food that would otherwise end up in the bin. Everybody Eats is an organisation founded in 2017 which rescues surplus food items from charities and businesses and converts them into restaurant style food. They have a pay-what-you-can mode, with the aim of making this food accessible to all. Ahead of Earth Day 2025, Green Desk Producer Liam spoke to Amanda Butland, the Systems and Support Manager at Everybody Eats, about the current food waste crisis and what we could all learn from the Everybody Eats ethos. Thanks to EcoFest!

In this episode I have a chat with my own writing coach, Stephanie Butland, who is the writer of many books, as well as being a coach, delivers writing retreats, offers manuscript assessments, and more.Stephanie wrote Lost for Words, which got a Reese Witherspoon mention, no less, and which she followed up with Found in a Bookshop, which is a beautiful novel about the importance of community - and the story has a book pharmacy in it, which is just adorable. I admit, I did cry reading this novel, but it is also incredibly uplifting.Stephanie has a newsletter she sends out, and you can sign up for that, as well as find out about the services she offers, by going to her website - stephaniebutlandauthor.comIf you would like to show your love for the podcast, please consider buying me a coffee through BuyMeACoffee.com. This gives you an opportunity to make a small, one-off donation - you are not committed to regular payments. Making the podcast earns me no money, and in fact costs me a fair bit, but I do it for the love, and because I have such fun talking with wonderful authors. Even if you can't afford to buy me a coffee, simply letting me know that you love the podcast means a lot to me. What's the future of finance? To answer this question I spoke with James Butland, Vice President of Financial Partnerships, EMEA for Airwallex.Airwallex was founded by four friends, Jack Zhang, Max Li, Lucy Liu, and Xijing Dai, in Melbourne, Australia in 2015 and was inspired by real-life experiences.Out of their love for good coffee, engineering-banking friends Jack Zhang and Max Li started Tukk & Co, a café in Melbourne. As small business owners, they recognised first-hand the impact of high foreign exchange (FX) fees and banking costs on their profit margins, and sought out to build a better solution for businesses operating cross-border, improving on the constraints of the current global financial system.Specifically they wanted to solve the pain points surrounding cross-border transactions and empower businesses of all sizes to operate anywhere, anytime. What's the future of the financial services industry? The financial services industry is undergoing a radical transformation, partly through the forces demanded by regulation, as well as the needs of consumers and small and large enterprises.New Banking-as-a-Service (BaaS) platforms can help to drive improved customer experience and business growth, and also could be the key to unlocking the future of the financial services industry.Increasingly companies are now investing in incorporating financial products and services into their core business models. To meet this rising demand for embedded finance, traditional financial institutions and challengers are increasingly offering BaaS options. But where do you start?James answers these questions and more, including how new banking platforms can empower a “talent anywhere” strategy for a reimagined workforce, allowing the best people to be hired no matter where they live, even if a company doesn't have a physical presence in that country.More on JamesJames on LinkedInAirwallex websiteYour Host: Actionable Futurist® Andrew GrillFor more on Andrew - what he speaks about and recent talks, please visit ActionableFuturist.com Andrew's Social ChannelsAndrew on LinkedIn@AndrewGrill on Twitter @Andrew.Grill on InstagramKeynote speeches hereAndrew's upcoming book
Why does supporting Palestine and being left go hand in hand? Another task for Hannes and Jannes, our two liberal wannabe-experts visiting the “Marx is' Muss” (“Marx is a must”) Congress. One more time, they went on to discover leftist, socialist and Marxist perspectives on Palestine: Mohammed Khatib gives an insight to the Palestinian perspective and explains what international solidarity and class struggle really mean. Ilan Pappé, Israeli historian, activist and author, draws attention to the fact that Israel is a settler colonial state. Phil Butland works out how German-Palestinian protest movements have developed in recent years. And Yousef calls for a fundamental rethink within “die Linke” (the left party) towards Palestine. He is optimistic but at the same time highly critical. Carabao Cup Final, Premier League Matchday 28, and Champions League Review. Tiki, Tum, Al, and Hussey get into all the soccer action this week. ⚽ Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City have won their first trophy under his reign. Their opponents Arsenal should’ve just stayed home – no ambition, no bravery, no nothing, a common theme under Wenger’s recent reign. Man City won 3-0 with a rare goal from Captain Fantastic Vincent Kompany. ⚽ Manchester United pull off one of the most epic Jose Mourinho smash & grabs in recent history with a 2-1 win over dominant Chelsea. ⚽ Liverpool cruise (as expected) against an up-and-down West Ham, 4-1. Emre Can’s price is going up & up & up! ⚽ Tottenham needed a late goal from Harry Kane to get all 3 points at Crystal Palace. The game ended 1-0 but to be fair to Spurs, it could’ve easily been 4 or 5. ⚽ Stoke City almost got all 3 points away at Leicester City but they couldn’t hold on – Butland had himself a nightmare error. The game ended 1-1. ⚽ West Brom suffer a devastating blow, losing 2-1 at home to an adventurous Huddersfield. ⚽ Bournemouth complete an epic comeback after being down 2-0 at home against Newcastle. Dan Gosling with an 89th minute equalizer will have the Magpies feeling hard-done, having been up 2-0 with all 3 points there for the taking. ⚽ Brighton smash Swansea 4-1. That gives Brighton some breathing room as far as the relegation battle. At the same time, Swansea remain in the drop zone, tied with Crystal Palace. ⚽ Southampton’s Gabiadinni scores in the 90th minute to rescue a point from Burnley. Burnley are now winless in 11 games…Sean Dyche, where you at? ⚽ Troyyyyy Deeneyyyyy! The Watford captain scores a rocket in the 79th minute, which proved to be enough to get all 3 points against Everton. Deeney’s goal aside, this game was a nap session…
Oh Stoke. Jack was back against the Jacks and there's delight that Butland made his long overdue return to Premier League football, but that's about as far as the positivity goes as Stoke fall to another away defeat. We ask why we've used half a season to get a player fit, what our defenders actually do in training and when Arnie's pen will come back to earth. Apart from discuss the game, we play "Pulis or Hughes?", talk about bet365 card payments, youth prospects, Patreon, potential Ale trails and more. Enjoy.
