China has been the main target of Donald Trump and his big tariffs. But can the world's second largest economy weather the storm and even win the trade war against the United States? Today, an expert in China's politics, Neil Thomas, from the Asia Society Policy Institute in Washington on why President Xi Jinping already has the upper hand. Featured: Neil Thomas, fellow of Chinese politics at the Asia Society Policy Institute in Washington DC
With the launch of President Trump's trade war this week, few countries are more at risk than China. Faced with a sudden and massive expansion of tariffs as well as changes to the de minimis parcel rule, the export-led development model that has led China to great wealth is now under serious threat. What should we learn from the past of U.S.-China relations in order to understand their future?Joining host Danny Crichton and Riskgaming director of programming Laurence Pevsner are Neil Thomas and Kate Logan of the Asia Society Policy Institute. Neil is a fellow and researches the elite politics and political economy of China, while Kate is director of the China Climate Hub and Climate Diplomacy. They have written extensively on China's industrial strategy and foreign relations, and even more notably, they both participated in the launch of our Chinese electric vehicle Riskgaming scenario Powering Up in Washington DC back in December. We talk about their experiences playing the game, and why processing information overload is a crucial skill, particularly in competitive markets like cleantech. Then we talk about the lessons of China's manufacturing rise, why America ignored its industrial strategy for so long, and how U.S. policymakers and business leaders can approach the future of the most critical trade relationship in the world.

A Future of Finance podcast with Neil Thomas, Chief Commercial Officer of AsiaNext.AsiaNext, a 24/7, Singapore-based institutional-only digital asset trading platform, opened for business in January 2024. Owned by the Swiss stock exchange (SIX) and SBI Holdings of Japan, AsiaNext emphasises its sound governance and regulatory compliance, which its owners and management believe are the keys to attracting institutional money. The new exchange has already secured two operating licences from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) and has applied for a third. But easily the most striking ambition of the new exchange is its commitment to a global strategy, in which AsiaNext will form a triad with the Swiss Digital Exchange (SDX, owned by SIX) in Zurich and Osaka Digital Exchange in Japan (where SBI is a major shareholder). To make a reality of this ambition, much depends on the behaviour of others. Technologists must create the tools to facilitate the transfer of digital assets between platforms (interoperability) and central banks must provide the trusted, on-chain fiat currency (CBDCs) to pay for them. But AsiaNext is moulded in the image of its parents and its management does not hesitate to speak of ten-year time horizons as well as the returns that are waiting to be collected on the investment in radical change. Dominic Hobson, co-founder of Future of Finance, spoke to Neil Thomas, Chief Commercial Officer of AsiaNext, about the origins, character and destiny of the first self-consciously global digital asset trading venue. On December 27 and 28, 2023, the Communist Party of China held the Central Conference on Work Relating to Foreign Affairs. This was the sixth such meeting – the first one was held way back in 1971. This Foreign Affairs Work Conference was the third held under Xi Jinping's leadership, with earlier meetings held in 2014 and 2018.Xi delivered a major speech at the Work Conference, which marks the most comprehensive expression yet of his more activist approach to PRC diplomacy. The speech provides valuable insights into Xi's assessment of the global balance of power, his vision of the international order, and his views of the role of Chinese diplomacy.Host Bonnie Glaser is joined by Neil Thomas, a Fellow for Chinese Politics at Asia Society Policy Institute's Center for China Analysis, where he studies elite politics, political economy, and foreign policy. The devotion for today, Friday, December 29, 2023 was written by Rev. Dr. Neil Thomas and is narrated by Michael Benham.Today's Words of Inspiration come from Matthew 12:46-50:While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him. Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.” He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.” Support the show
Recordings from last night's Q&A with Bond author Charlie Higson, followed by a screening of On Her Majesty's Secret Service. It starts with the bus ride to Shepherd's Bush where I bump into an old friend Aubrey Charles. We discuss his favourite Bond film and Madonna. Next I speak to Neil Thomas, Rob Smith, Ajay Chowdhury and James Davies as we queue to get our books signed by Charlie. Afterwards Rob Smith and I chat a little more about the screening, how Charlie Higson stole my seat and the optimum moments in OHMSS to go to the toilet. As we wait for the train back to Shepherd's Bush we are joined by Monica Germanà author of Bond Girls Body, Fashion and Gender. Footage of the Q&A is being uploaded to the YouTube channel as I write this. Keep up with all the weekly Bond content on the Newsletter.

It's June and Pride month! I'm dropping a series of amazing interviews with some AWESOME guests this month! If you haven't subscribed to my podcast, now is the time so you don't miss a single one! First off is Reverend Dr. Neil Thomas who currently serves as lead pastor at the Cathedral of Hope, an open and affirming congregation of the United Church of Christ. Rev. Neil talks about his journey as an openly gay Christian minister advocating for a more inclusive church based on love. In a recent message to his congregation, Rev. Thomas wrote: 'Often it is our personal experience of the presence of God and encounter with the divine that helps us to believe that God is more than just a theology or someone else's experience. When it becomes personal, it creates an experience memory that enables us to believe that God is journeying with us through good and not so good.' In our interview, he then elaborates on how he has experienced the Divine personally. Additionally he shared: "...there is some magic in those moments when you realize that this is beyond just a human experience. We really are spiritual beings having this human experience and how do we relate to that? How do we allow that to be all that it can be? Because we're only here for a short period of time and my hope is that I'll leave the world better than I found it." May we all work towards leaving this world better than we found it. No one ever became a great artist, or architect, or engineer simply by focusing on art or architecture or engineering. Sure, you have to hone your skills and master your craft, but what feeds that craft is an interest in the world around us. A fascination with broader, even tangential subjects like fashion, clothing, nature, music, culture, or the simple beauty of a bird in flight.Neil Thomas has let that kind of curiosity guide him since he was a ten-year-old boy. He has used his skills of observation, creativity, and collaboration to build some of the world's most captivating and awe-inspiring structures.Elora Hardy is cut from the same cloth, making a name for herself in the world of design and architecture by letting the world we live in guide her work. Here's Neil in conversation with Elora, along with a global community who are eager to learn more about beauty, building, and balance.

The devotion for today, Tuesday, January 31, 2023 was written by Rev. Dr. Neil Thomas and is narrated by Dana Goodenow Today's Words of Inspiration come from James 5:1-6 New International VersionWarning to Rich OppressorsNow listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming on you. Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days. Look! The wages you failed to pay the workers who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the God. You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter. You have condemned and murdered the innocent one, who was not opposing you.Support the show

Today's ID the Future concludes a three-part series featuring author Neil Thomas in a free-ranging conversation with radio show host Hank Hanegraaff. The focus is Thomas's recent book, Taking Leave of Darwin: A Longtime Agnostic Discovers the Case for Design. Here Thomas and Hanegraaff discuss the logical positivists and what Thomas sees as their failure to consistently apply their evidential standards to Darwinism. Thomas also contrasts the cosmic nihilism of Richard Dawkins with the mounting evidence of fine tuning for life, and calls out what Thomas describes as the magical thinking at the heart of Darwinism. Hanegraaff and Thomas also explore how Darwin's theory of evolution has roots in an ancient philosophical system that was long regarded as resting on Read More › Source

On this ID the Future, Taking Leave of Darwin author Neil Thomas continues a lively conversation with radio host Hank Hanegraaff. In this second in a three-part series, the two touch on the fossil record's challenge to Darwinism, Gould and Eldredge's rescue attempt, the question of whether Darwin's best known contemporary defender is dishonest or merely self-deluded, the wishful thinking surrounding origin-of-life studies, the failed attempts to reduce the mind to mere brain chemistry, and the morally repugnant pro-eugenics ideas rooted in Darwinism and touted in the textbook at the heart of the famous Scopes Monkey Trial. Then Thomas sketches the cultural milieu and individual motivations that he's convinced drew Darwin toward his formulation of the theory of evolution by natural selection. Here the focus is not on the various evidential weaknesses of Darwin's theory (which Thomas does cover in his book) but on a question that puzzled Thomas once he became convinced of just how evidentially weak the case for Darwinism was: How was it that a theory so poorly Read More › Source
On today's Bible Answer Man broadcast, we present an episode of the Hank Unplugged podcast. Hank's guest is Neil Thomas, author of Taking Leave of Darwin: A Longtime Agnostic Discovers the Case for Design. Hank and Neil Thomas discuss what led Thomas to write a book investigating evolutionary theory, the implications of Darwinian evolution and the impact it's had on civilization, a serious case of “deiphobia” among scientists, and the false antagonism between religion and science.
On today's Bible Answer Man broadcast (10/15/21), we pick up where we ended on our previous broadcast and present more of an episode of the Hank Unplugged podcast. Hank is talking with Neil Thomas, author of Taking Leave of Darwin: A Longtime Agnostic Discovers the Case for Design. Hank and Neil Thomas discuss the materialistic magic that is part and parcel of the Darwinian paradigm, the squabble of the two Brits—Neil Thomas and Richard Dawkins, the multiverse hypothesis, the mystery of mysteries—the notion that "the physical facts fix all the facts" doesn't stand up to common sense, and invisible natural wonders and our own false sense of entitlement about these innumerable benefits.
On today's Bible Answer Man broadcast (10/14/21), we pick up where we ended on our previous broadcast and present more of an episode of the Hank Unplugged podcast. Hank is talking with Neil Thomas, author of Taking Leave of Darwin: A Longtime Agnostic Discovers the Case for Design. Hank and Neil Thomas discuss the notion that intelligent design theorists smuggle religion under the banner of scientific credibility, the belief that complex linguistic capacities evolved from ape-like communication, the awe-inducing complexity of the human brain, Alfred Russel Wallace's conversion from naturalism to intelligent design, and the ramifications of social Darwinism: racism, sexism, and eugenics.
On today's Bible Answer Man broadcast (10/13/21), we pick up where we ended on our previous broadcast and present more of an episode of the Hank Unplugged podcast. Hank is talking with Neil Thomas, author of Taking Leave of Darwin: A Longtime Agnostic Discovers the Case for Design. Hank and Neil Thomas discuss the false antagonism between religion and science, Darwin's misreading of the Bible and the Book of Nature, how the fossil record has been an embarrassment to Darwinian evolution, how Richard Dawkins continues to hoodwink people, the misinformation with respect to the Miller–Urey experiment, and Panspermia—the hypothesis that life exists throughout the universe and is distributed by things like meteoroids and comets.
Hank Hanegraaff is joined by Neil Thomas to discuss his book Taking Leave of Darwin: A Longtime Agnostic Discovers the Case for Design. Neil Thomas was a committed Darwinist and agnostic — until an investigation of evolutionary theory led him to a startling conclusion: “I had been conned!” As he studied the work of Darwin's defenders, he found himself encountering tactics eerily similar to the methods of political brainwashing he had studied as a scholar. Thomas felt impelled to write a book as a sort of warning call to humanity: “Beware! You have been fooled!” For more information on receiving Taking Leave of Darwin: A Longtime Agnostic Discovers the Case for Design for your partnering gift click here. https://www.equip.org/product/cri-resource-cri2110hup/Topics discussed include: What led Neil Thomas to question his acceptance of Darwinian evolution?
