The Federal government has ordered rail workers back to work, avoiding strike action from Canada's two major railways. What comes next in this saga and could this situation have been avoided? We explore the topic with Bruce Curran, Associate Professor in the Faculty of Law at the University of Manitoba. Next, the kids are getting set to return to class this week, and for many it will be the first year where cell phones will no longer be welcomed in the classroom. We discuss the change and what parents and students need to know moving ahead with Mark Bylsma, Policy Coordinator with the Calgary Board of Education. Finally, could playing ‘video games' for a couple of hours a day have a ‘positive impact' on your mental health? Well that just may be the case, according to a new study on the topic. We get details on the research from Dr. Ted Jablonski, our ‘on-call' family physician.

Show Quotes: "So we believe that AI as has been called the next electricity is a general purpose technology that is going to disrupt every industry. And so you cannot scale it by just hiring unicorns or bringing people in who will always solve your problems for you. Everybody has domain knowledge. So the best way to scale it is to empower people to do it." "We've had people who have taken some of these online courses, even master's degree in data science, and they will still come and join the bootcamp. Why? Because it was not applied. So we focused on applied artificial intelligence. And through that, we created a curriculum that will teach you the principles of machine learning." Credits... In part two of my interview with Lise Stransky, we expand on the importance of career health. Lise explains that everyone essentially has two jobs: the work we are paid to do and managing “Me Inc.” and it's the alignment between the two that is vital to keep in check. A key way to do this is to seek out meaningful work rather than just the idealized “dream job”.When I asked Lise how she has been assisting clients with “career health checks” through the pandemic, she points out that acknowledging the new skills they've gained is an important step. Not simply the pivot to remote work - though that is assuredly a new skill many of us have been learning - but what has been learned from job loss as well. Ask yourself where you've helped someone else. Where have opportunities grown through the pandemic? These are all notable questions. In striving to maintain work and life wellness, Lise works to remain engaged in the activity she's in. We discuss that important wellness consideration and share hopes for healthy career futures in this thoughtful second episode. According to section 293 of the Criminal Code of Canada, it is illegal for people to practice polygamy. Under s. 293, not only is any form of polygamy illegal but any type of polygamous union that purports to result from a rite of polygamy is illegal. Despite this prohibition, there is a community of polygamists in British Columbia called Bountiful which, to date, the authorities in British Columbia have refrained from prosecuting. The apparent rationale for the non-prosecution of polygamy practiced by Bountiful members has been a belief that s. 293 would not withstand a challenge under the freedom of religion provision, section 2(a), of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Could it be argued that the anti-polygamy provision in the Code impinges on the freedom of religion for the residents of Bountiful? Are the harms associated with polygamy significant enough to justify a limitation on freedom of religion? Would s. 293 survive a Charter s. 2(a) challenge? Speakers: Pamela Dos Ramos, M.A. (Counseling). Ph.D. (Transformative Learning) Linda McKay-Panos, B.Ed., J.D., LL.M. Linda McKay-Panos is the Executive Director of the Alberta Civil Liberties Research Centre. She taught with the Calgary Board of Education for 7 years before obtaining a Law Degree. 12- 1:30pm The latest polls show that the Alberta Conservative Party, which for the last 39 years has formed our provincial government, is trailing the upstart Wildrose Alliance Party. While the governing Tories presently have a massive majority in the Legislature, lack of support from core groups may open the door for big changes in the next election. In Sep 2009, former Wildrose Alliance leader Paul Hinman led the party to a stunning by-election victory in the long held Conservative riding of Calgary-Glenmore. Apparent discontent within the Tory caucus, became reality with the recent “floor crossing” by 2 Tory MLA's, to join the Wildrose Alliance and new leader Danielle Smith, further suggesting that Alberta's political landscape could be different in the future. The speaker will explain the Wildrose Alliance Party policies and argue that they are mostly grass roots in nature, therefore responsive to the needs and wishes of the voting public. Speaker: Danielle Smith October 17, 2009 Danielle Smith was elected as the Leader of the Wildrose Alliance Party. A fiscal conservative, she believes in the power of a free enterprise economy and efficient, cost effective delivery of essential social services by government. Until recently, Danielle was the Director of Provincial Affairs for Alberta with the Canadian Federation of Independent Business. Prior to joining CFIB, Danielle worked as an editorial writer and columnist at the Calgary Herald for six years and has been the host of Global Sunday, a national current affairs television talk show. Danielle received her B.A. in English and Economics from the University of Calgary. Later she worked on policy research during a year-long internship at the Fraser Institute. Danielle has also served as a trustee for the Calgary Board of Education and worked in advocacy as director of the Alberta Property Rights Initiative.
