Maria Rickert Hong (https://www.mariarickerthong.com/)A Certified Holistic Health Counselor who helps parents recover their children from symptoms of: almost autism, sensory processing disorder, autism, ADHD, PANS (Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome), PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections), OCD, and Lyme disease. She is the author of the best-selling book, Almost Autism: Recovering Children from Sensory Processing Disorder, A Reference for Parents and Practitioners and a co-author of the best-selling book, Brain Under Attack: A Resource for Parents and Caregivers of Children with PANS, PANDAS, and Autoimmune Encephalitis.Sensory processing disorder and other sensory processing challenges are becoming more and more common especially in children which is why there's a need to prioritize natural health. They may occur alongside other conditions like PANS, PANDAS, ADD, and autism. In today's episode with Maria Rickert Hong, we'll be diving into learning and discussing more about sensory processing disorder and how we could resolve it through natural means. What makes us suspend belief and put the fire in our belly?Maria has a son who had many health issues and they weren't getting good responses from his pediatricians. Her son also had sensory issues that hit him when he was about three years old and which prompted them to seek more help. However, the doctors tend to provide several different medications. Her awakening moment was when she had her own health problems while taking care of her son who would wake up five or six times a night, go to her room, and wake her up. She developed severe adrenal fatigue and had hormonal-related problems. Upon searching for natural sleep remedies, she came across a book of a nutritionist author, Ann Louise Gittleman, entitled Before the Change: Taking Charge of Your Perimenopause. In the book, Gittleman offers a wide range of options for taking care of yourself which helped Maria a lot.Cutting out the dairy for Maria's son.Cutting out the dairy made quite an impact on Maria's son. Her son's asthma, constipation, allergies, eczema, and sensory issues all got better.Maria started using a cookbook that offers kid-friendly recipes and they're mostly gluten-free and dairy-free. It also has other potential allergens that kids could be sensitive to. Maria got into cooking and kept going from there. You have to do diet, you have to eat.Nobody wants to hear it but you have to diet. You don't have to instantly shift to doing an extreme diet. Like what I always tell my clients, let's do some minor things if we can. And if we can't, we wait until we calm the brain first and then, we start stripping it down. Many choose that option because they're in a crisis which is totally understandable. You gotta do triage first. However, people should always keep in mind how impactful a diet is. And I think once people realize how beneficial it is, they'll be more motivated to continue with it. In an interview with Dr. Terry Wahls conducted by Maria, she learned that Dr. Wahls has recovered herself from secondary progressive multiple sclerosis. In fact, Dr. Wahls was already told that there was nothing the doctors could do except medications. Fortunately, Dr. Wahls discovered functional medicine and tweaked her paleo diet to get all the nutrients that are helpful for mitochondrial function. Now, you can't tell she's had multiple sclerosis; she's fully mobile.Neurofeedback is a level one intervention for ADHD.Seeking treatment...

I'm excited to bring you today's guest, Maria Rickert Hong. In the last episode we spoke with a mom who found resolutions for her sons' autism, and PANS/PANDAS. Today's guest, Maria, also helped guide her sons out of multiple health struggles. Long story short, early on, one of her sons showed signs of sensory processing disorder, digestive issues, developmental delays and other health concerns. After they weren't finding answers in conventional medicine, she turned to a naturopath and a variety of practitioners for help. By finding and addressing the causes behind her son's health issues, they were able to turn them around. In my talk with Maria, you'll hear… The mix of health struggles, including sensory processing disorder, that led Maria to describe her son's condition as “almost autism” Her own health issues and how she believes they were linked to her son's struggles The specific therapies and practitioners that helped Maria and her son Why she removed her mercury dental fillings The diet changes that improved many of her son's symptoms The link between developmental delays and what's called retained primitive reflexes How their family addressed Lyme disease and PANS/PANDAS Why you have to do your own research and be your own and your child's advocate And how all this inspired Maria to leave Wall St to become a health practitioner Maria Rickert Hong is a former Wall Street sell-side equity research analyst who is now a Certified Holistic Health Counselor. On today's show we talk about Sensory Processing Disorder in children.Children with sensory processing disorder issues have great difficulty processing and acting upon information received through their senses.Sensory Processing Disorder isn't a true diagnosis, yet, because it is not a standalone diagnosis in the DSM-V (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition). However, most children with autism have it, and many children with ADD/ADHD, PANS/PANDAS and Lyme disease also have it. It can also be a standalone disorder, meaning that a child is over- or under-sensitive to lights, sounds, motions, tastes, smells and more. The good news is that children CAN recover from it and Maria is a great example of someone that made that possible for her sons. Maria Rickert Hong is a Certified Holistic Health Counselor who specializes in helping parents making dietary and lifestyle changes for children with Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), autism, ADHD, allergies, asthma, autoimmune and more. In this week's highly informative and eye-opening episode, Brigitte interviews Maria Rickert Hong, Certified Holistic Health Counselor and author of Almost Autism and Brain Under Attack, who has recovered her son from Sensory Processing Disorder along with a host of other health conditions. Maria Rickert Hong is a former Wall Street equity research analyst who is now a Certified Holistic Health Counselor. She helps parents recover their children from neurodevelopmental disorders including autism, almost autism, ADHD, ADD, PDD-NOS through diet and lifestyle changes. Her journey into health began when her first son started developing symptoms of diseases at 3 months old. As time went on he had numerous health conditions including asthma, sensory issues, constipation, and more, and was on about 10 different medications by the time he was 18 months old. By the time he was 3 and Maria had her second son, Maria developed severe adrenal fatigue, uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, bronchitis, and shingles when she wasn’t getting enough sleep from her son waking up 6 times a night. Maria ended up taking Zoloft and Ambien for insomnia but they didn’t help.Frustrated with not getting help for her son nor herself from her conventional, western doctors, she started doing research and found nutritionist Ann Louise Gittleman and her books which led her to try out magnesium for her insomnia, which solved her sleep problem immediately. After working with a naturopath for herself and her son and seeing significant improvement in their health, Maria decided to pay it forward and become a Holistic Health Coach. Maria is also the Education and Media Director for Epidemic Answers, a 501(c)3 non-profit that lets parents know that recovery is possible and is the sponsoring non-profit of The Documenting Hope Project. She lays out the roadmap for the recovery process for many disorders which includes proper nutrition and lifestyle, finding the right practitioner, and finding therapies that incorporate reflex integration. She emphasizes the importance of getting to the root causes of the issues. "No one thing caused your child’s autism. It’s a multitude of factors. It’s a perfect storm. And because of that, there’s no one thing that will undo it. And it’s always a journey," Maria says. She tells us it's never too late and that some adults with autism have turned things around. She also reminds moms to take good care of themselves because if they don't they can't take care of their child either. Rising FireFly Retreat is dedicated to providing a place and opportunity for children to find their own special connection with the world around them by introducing them to ancient spiritual practices and supporting them as they infuse the old ways with a new energy. They uphold that an open structure for learning is key. Kids today are constantly barraged with schedules, video games, texting, facebook, you name it. How often do they have the chance to “unplug” and just be? Experiencing the simple joys that nature has to offer is one of the major focuses we intend to impart to our FireFlies. Learning that we are each an active part of the world around us is another focus. Empowering the youth with the knowledge that they can make a difference and encouraging them to grow their belief in themselves is what we are all about!
