[20:43] If your heart wants to deviate from the parenting plan and you want to be flexible with the schedules, should you? [23:43] Lesa shares her parenting plan course. Key Takeaways: When talking to your co-parent, communicate just the facts, keep opinions to yourself. Keep your side of the street clean, which helps keep your boundaries upheld. You have the power to break generational patterns through your actions. Show your children how to handle difficult relationships and how to manage their emotions. Show them how powerful they can be by spreading kindness! When you start to notice that you are being triggered, step back and look at the situation. Understand what is being triggered and what you need to work on. Quotes: “Never let somebody else's bad behavior determine yours. And it's my rule to my clients too, because I could really stoop low when I'm dealing with somebody who's disordered and angry and, but why? Why would you want to stoop low? You're giving your power away.” - Karen McMahon “To everyone listening: Hot mess. I was the worst. I was the ugliest. I was the most reactive. I was a rageaholic. I was the poster girl for what not to be going through a divorce. I don't want anyone to think that I'm all that. I have just worked really, really hard. And it has been such a beautiful transformation that I'm so passionate about paying it forward and sharing it.” - Karen McMahon Guest Bio: Karen founded Journey Beyond Divorce in 2010, after discovering that the pain of dissolving her marriage had been the very stimulus for her personal transformation. During her three and a half year tumultuous divorce, Karen's life began to improve exponentially. With much hard work, she embraced her new life, created healthy friendships, found her true voice, and learned to set suitable boundaries and let go of what she could not control. Learning to live a healthy enlivened life is something that we can share with our children, creating thriving relationships with them while helping them grow emotionally strong and healthy. Karen is a graduate of the world's leading coaching institute, Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching (iPEC) and a Certified Member of the International Coaching Federation (ICF). Doing Divorce Different A Podcast Guide to Doing Divorce Differently
Today is part 1 of a 2 part episode with Karen McMahon, the founder of Journey Beyond Divorce. During this episode we discuss managing triggers while dealing with a high conflict co-parenting relationship. Karen discusses how to set boundaries and alleviate obstacles that may get in the way. She explains emotional energy and how to uplevel the energy you are projecting in order to benefit yourself but also hopefully raise the energy of your co-parent. Tune in for great tips on boundary setting and don't miss next week's episode about becoming a boundary bad ass! In this episode: [4:01] What was Karen's experience with her divorce? [6:07] What did Lesa learn to do when she is feeling triggered? [9:05] What was the boundary challenge Karen did recently? [11:05] Lesa and Karen share tools for dealing with high-conflict co-parenting. [15:50] Karen talks about the chapters and waves that we go through. [17:17] Karen discusses the circumstances that can arise with co-parenting and how to handle them. [18:00] How do you alleviate the obstacles? [25:02] How did Karen deal with her triggers from her ex during their divorce? Key Takeaways: Your triggers are not from your marriage, they are from something that happened in your childhood. Look at the trigger poking as an opportunity of shining the light on the wounds that you still need to heal. If your boundary is not being honored, you honor it. Go about your business, and follow your boundary whether the person you are trying to apply it to adheres to it or not. There are 7 different levels of emotional energy. When we dive right into the fight, we're coming from a low level, high conflict energy. Instead think about how you can be kind and compassionate to yourself, ask yourself if you have to respond, and raise your energy to almost forgiveness and compassion. Quotes: “Isn't it interesting that taking care of yourself and your mind is actually affecting that other high-conflict person?” - Lesa Koski “That trigger predates your marriage. Our triggers never begin at our marriage, they begin in our childhood, so there's work to be done.” - Karen McMahon Guest Bio: Karen founded Journey Beyond Divorce in 2010, after discovering that the pain of dissolving her marriage had been the very stimulus for her personal transformation. What if you tried to shoot yourself, not once but three times? When the gun finally went off, the bullet shot through Matt's head with a loud pop. And a voice inside stated loud and clear "you will not die today!" Matt Hogan joins us to share his extraordinary story of despair that led to him putting a gun to his head...and yet he survived. Clearly Matt had a greater mission in life. From shedding self-hatred to radically taking self responsibility for his life, Matt is an alternative life coach who lives his values wholeheartedly. Buckle up! This is an extraordinary episode of Awakened Nation about transformation and resilience....and mental health! #mentalhealth #suicide #survivorstories #transformation About Matt Hogan: Being born in a small town at the heart of the United States, I felt as if I was born on the bottom of the social ladder. That was largely my fuel and feelings for years. I was trying to escape my roots and move beyond the box I perceived myself being born and raised into. Fast forward to 2004, half my life later and ago, I put a bullet in my brain. This was the first major turning point of my life. At this point, it was scarier to be alive than to be dead. I didn't have the mental or emotional capacity to perceive a better life for myself. And in an attempt to end the never ending barrage of self hate, harm, and pain, I took matters into my own hands. This bullet saved my life. This bullet saved me from the depths of despair that plagues many in our world. It altered my experience of myself and life, forever. In the seconds following that bullet entering my brain, I heard, ‘You are not going to die today' inside of me. It was that moment that birthed a possibility of a better life. A better man. Better circumstances. More peace. More connection. More courage. Coming out of my coma, I was first told that it was a shock that I was alive. Then I was told I may never walk again. I received a second message inside of me when I was in my wheel-chair, sitting on the roof of Rusk Rehabilitation Center in Columbia, Mo. The message was loud and clear and like a switch flipped. “You will not live your life this way.” I became a certified professional coach from the Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching (iPEC), and I turned my attention to work that goes beyond one company. Today I help hundreds of individuals and corporations face their demons with radical responsibility. Interview with Matt Hogan. Matt came to coaching through his own journey of transformation. In 2004, when Matt was just 18 years old, he put a bullet in his head. That bullet ended up saving his life. Matt survived, and for the first time he was able to hear the whisper of his inner wisdom. He was mentored by meditation and yoga teachers, as well as world-class coaches. Have you ever felt like your introversion has left you feeling inferior because you choose to observe rather than speak up? How can introverts find balance in solitude and simultaneously be in a community with others? Our heart-centered guests on this week's episode of On This Walk are two of my past walking partners, Jenny Wiley and Michael Smith. They both have experience working with others in their respective positions and helping communities of individuals find their purpose and fulfillment. Also, as people with introverted qualities, they know the struggle to find a balance between solitude and socialization. Today, we're unpacking that challenge and exploring how meditation, boundaries, and permission can allow us to find safety in ourselves and our identities. In This Episode (0:25) The importance of finding the natural balance in introversion (8:50) The main reason Susan Cain's book, Quiet, spoke to Jenny (14:48) Why we must balance the need to be with people and the need for solitude (19:49) The layers of beauty that emerge when we set boundaries surrounding our time and energy (23:22) Why we have to work through the challenging feelings that can come when we're quiet (29:28) The major milestone that balance and meditation can help us reach (34:15) The valuable give and take that comes when we turn toward the practice of meditation (43:30) The power to cultivate a sense of safety is within YOU (51:28) Why permission is at the heart of practical boundaries Notable Quotes “Now I'm like, ‘Bring on the yoga! Bring on the mindfulness movement!' That's totally my jam. But thinking about slowing down enough to feel exactly what was going on in my life at the time, and it's still even hard now sometimes, but slowing down to feel all of that, because I was experiencing a lot of shame and judgment around what I should be feeling at that time, it was often very intense for me to slow down and feel those things. Because not only was I slowing down and feeling them, I was judging them too in that quiet space. And that judgment added a layer of pain that now I know was just not even necessary.” – Jenny (25:39) “There's one really important energy that we need to embody and live, and that is the energy of permission and giving ourselves permission. When we are not creating boundaries in the way that our true self might be asking us to create boundaries, it's usually because we are not giving ourselves permission to do more of something or less of something. And it's usually often around early childhood experiences, the way that we grew up, traumas in our past, and the fears that are attached to that.” – Michael (52:25) Our Guests Jenny Wiley specializes in community coaching and helping organizations rebuild, reenergize, and grow. She currently serves as Director of Programming & Community Growth for the Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching (iPEC), which works with committed individuals to help them reach their goals, dreams, and realize their potential. Doctoral-trained therapist and healing practitioner Michael Smith is the founder of Empath Connection. As a leader in mind-body holistic healing for nearly two decades, Michael has personally coached thousands of individuals to make stronger connections between mind, body, and spirit. Over the years as a coach, I've heard many people say, ‘I'm happy, but I feel like I could be happier.” So today we're going to explore the situations (which I think many of us experience!) when things are not ‘awful,' but you feel like you want ‘more than usual.' To that end, I'm speaking with Luke Iorio, a mindfulness coach and entrepreneur. First and foremost, we talk about achieving congruence (a word I love!) with who you really are. I believe many of us self-employed folks have made the choice to be self-employed in the first place in order to better achieve that very congruence – a congruence which certainly makes it easier to be happier! Luke and I explore this idea, as well as how integrity and authenticity underpin congruence. We discuss the concept of ‘know, like, and trust,' and how connecting with our clients from a more authentic place can help us get to a point where our clients are people we actually and actively want to serve. Luke Iorio is a mindfulness coach, entrepreneur, blogger, and host of the top podcast, On This Walk. Luke has walked alongside thousands of clients and listeners as they search for meaning, purpose, and alignment. For much of his life, Luke believed success was something to be achieved, and that placing mind over matter was honorable, strong, the “right thing to do.” Luke searched for alignment and purpose, and on his journey, he discovered the beauty and joy of reconnecting with one's true nature, of finding real balance, of feeling connected, healed, and whole. As the previous President and CEO for the Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching (iPEC), Luke had the unique and fortunate opportunity to work with influential people and organizations who were not satisfied with life and business as usual, granting him access to a laboratory of transformation that few people have had. Luke continues to serve as partner and board member for iPEC. Marni welcomes mindfulness and soulfulness coach, and podcast host of On This Walk, Luke Iorio, and they delve into what it takes to lead a purposeful life. The former CEO and president of the Institute of Professional Excellence in Coaching (IPEC) shares his own personal journey with finding his way back to himself, and as a result to leading a life of inner balance and connection. Having helped thousands of clients and listeners in their quest for meaning, Luke divulges the tools to help you reconnect with your true self. It's about awareness, rather than blame; courage rather than shame; and owning your role within your own life. Takeaways from this episode: - What are the questions you should be asking yourself? - How you can live life on your own terms - Change is fluid - The universe is constantly conspiring to make you whole - Awareness is the first step - How to own your role in the situation It's Not About Making Lemonade Out of Those Lemons [08:47] When you bear in mind that whatever rough spot you're in, is either your transformation moment, or it's preparing you for a transformation, your perspective starts to shift. And this isn't about positivity for the sake of positivity. Luke shares the insights he's gained from his own journey, and years of experience in the field by explaining that the universe is always conspiring to return you to wholeness through the experiences it hands you. It's through these traumas, negative experiences and losses, that we begin to understand what is within us. That's how you begin to decipher what the universe is trying to tell you. These are hardships are what lead us to the questions that matter: what are the parts of you that you feel like you've disowned? what are the corners of you that you feel have shut-down? And that's not to shift blame, but rather to acknowledge that there is a reason, you closed off certain areas of yourself; there's a reason for everything you've done. The journey begins when you start finding out why. At any given moment, the experience I'm having is returning me to wholeness. Life isn't trying to beat you down; it's trying to lead you back to yourself. All you have to do is listen. And to do that takes faith and humility. We get fragmented through all these different little experiences, we leave little pieces of ourselves in our histories, in our traumas, in our hurts and pains. And life is always trying to return them to us. Step Out of the Moment and Look at the Whole Picture [13:42] You're not broken; you're whole. That's something we often forget to remind ourselves of. But being aware of your role in any given situation isn't about putting yourself down, it's about understanding where that decision came from. When we look at a situation unfolding before us, we assume that it's happening in the present, explains Luke. But, that's actually not the case, it is the culmination of all the perceptions, beliefs, attitudes, patterns and conditioning that we've absorbed and built over the past decade or so. Ultimately the recurring conflicts that appear consistently as we interact with the world are a result of our histories. Exploring that is what informs our decisions. That's where awareness comes into play. When we recognize our role in a certain situation, the whole picture begins to get a little clearer. What you're doing is opening that window of taking responsibility where you can start taking responsibility and begin changing the way you're relating to your participation in whatever is going on. Life Moves in Cycle [23:00] It's not news; life is in a state of perpetual change. And yet, we tend to forget the fluidity that is the very nature of life. Everything in life goes through cycles. Luke elaborates that the reason for discomfort and unhappiness is that very often we hold on to the things that are trying to be let go of. Change doesn't work that way, it's meant to be more fluid. It's not meant to be controlled. Being aware of that means being able to ebb and flow rather than attempt to change the very nature of life. Because resisting ends up creating rigidity. Whereas leaning into it, and understanding that universal truth eventually leads to a deeper change within you. Join me on the Fast Track to Grant Writer: www.teresahuff.com/vip Whether you think of yourself as a leader or not, you are. You impact and influence others whether you realize it or not. We all feel the heat sometimes in this hectic world. Let's glean some wisdom from someone who's been in the trenches - literally. Today's interview is with a former Green Beret, Otis McGregor, and it's an honor to have him share his leadership and life lessons with us. Otis shares about learning how to grow as a leader, eliminating stress in your life, gaining positive structure for your day, and sharing the three aspects of trust that can make a huge difference in your success. Lessons for Leaders from a Green Beret: Be clear in communicating to others what needs to be done. Clearly express how to do it, why it's important, and how it fits into the bigger picture. When seeking out wisdom about how to grow as a leader, don't pigeonhole yourself into only learning from people within your line of work. Great leadership skills and techniques can be learned from people in all different fields, implementing their tips and tricks into your wheelhouse. Accountability partners help keep you on track. When trying to make a large change, implement smaller increments of change at a time. This makes it easier to achieve the smaller goals. For example, say you want to start getting up early to exercise. When you get up at 6am normally, instead of jumping right to setting that alarm for 4am, start with 5:45am for a week, then 5:30am, and so on. Take smaller steps to make a long lasting, larger change. Tips to Eliminate Stress and Handle Hard Situations: First things first, stop and assess the situation. When you realize you're overwhelmed, slow down, take a breath, and write down all the things that you need to get done. Once you have this list, use the Eisenhower Decision Matrix to help you categorize and prioritize. Another tip to help eliminate stress is to shut off your electronics to avoid distractions, and just write down everything that's been on your mind. Not with a goal to solve a problem or to create anything, but just to get everything out of your head. This can help us clear our minds and be more relaxed. Break Your Day Up Into 3 Categories: Focus: This is a time in your day that is set apart to work on a specific thing or two that you want to handle and you do not allow people or things to sidetrack you. Do whatever you need to do to be unavailable to distractions. Flex: This is where a lot of us spend most of our time. This is where you're working on different things for the day and you're able to bounce around a bit more, allowing for interruptions or breaks. Personal: This is the category a lot of us let be pushed under the rug when we're stressed, but taking care of ourselves must be a priority. Have you ever heard the common phrase, “You can't pour from an empty cup?” We can't be our best selves when we're drained. Take a walk, read a book, take a nap, spend time with friends, play an instrument, etc…whatever it is that helps you unwind and feel refreshed. The Trust Triad As a leader it's important to learn the power of the Trust Triad. The Trust Triad consists of three legs of trust: Trust yourself: Believe that the decisions you make, with the time available to you and the information at your disposal, are the best decisions that you can make. Trust your team: Believe they are capable of doing what they are here to do. The team must be able to trust you: They must believe that your decisions have the best interest of the organization in mind. Not yourself, not a specific person, not the money in your pocket, but the organization's success. Strive to create strength in whatever area is lacking in the Trust Triad within your organization and see how much stronger you become. Challenge Question: What lesson will you begin to implement right now to grow as a leader? Show Summary:“Renewal starts with the mind. When you understand your Core Energy and the impact of psychedelics for healing, awareness means half of the battle is won already." ‘Energy' is indeed a meaningful word. A term loosely used around by everybody, it can definitely connote different meanings that may pertain to our health, vibrancy, and even abstract ideas connected to the spiritual or ‘woowoo' realm. Though the Gutsy Health platform leans more towards science-based advice and findings, we are open to discuss new concepts that push the boundaries of our long-held beliefs, as long as it helps us reach our peak performance. Our guest, Lana Pribic, is a certified life coach and podcast host of Modern Psychedelics. She will let us into the two-fold topics of Core Energy and Psychedelics. Having used psychedelics recreationally, she experienced what it's like to have barriers removed and be connected to her higher self. Later on, she studied at the prestigious Institute for Professional Excellence and Coaching (iPEC) to learn their trademarked Core Energy program. In this episode, you'll understand why psychedelics can be helpful, and be aware of your own level within the hierarchy of the seven (7) types of Core Energy. Is psychedelics something you'd try for self-awareness? Find out and listen to Episode 37 of the Gutsy Health Podcast to learn more.Exceptional Highlights:Core Energy can either be one of two things. Catabolic is destructive, tearing down, and works against you. While Anabolic is supportive, constructive, fueling and expansive. Discovered on the same year as the atomic bomb, psychedelics has become the atomic bomb for the mind. It allows you to see the world in a completely different way.Psychedelics are nonspecific amplifiers. They bring to the forefront your suppressions while tearing down your mind's defenses. Show Highlights: Origin of Core Energy Lana Pribic 3:21 Core energy lies as the root of our thoughts, belief systems, and our actions. It's a default programming from everything as we grew up. Like in a cell's nucleus - that's where it all begins. Beliefs differentiated from Energy Lana Pribic 4:51Beliefs are not core energy. Your core energy determines whether a set of beliefs are going to hold you back or move you forward.50% of Change come from AwarenessLana Pribic 16:56 When it comes to change, knowing is already 50% of the work. We can't come to choice without awareness and it all starts in the head.
