The latest episode of Wild Things & Wild Places takes listeners to the 2025 Camo at the Capitol event, where conservation, leadership, and outdoor advocacy come together. This episode features a powerful lineup of guests who are making an impact on Wyoming's public lands, wildlife, and the policies that shape outdoor recreation and conservation. Chris Floyd, Deputy Director of Wyoming State Parks, and Mark Tesoro, a longtime newspaper industry veteran now with Wyo State Parks, join the conversation. Their insights highlight the ongoing efforts to maintain access, protect habitats, and promote responsible stewardship across the state. Also featured in this episode is Colton Schick of Cheyenne, the 2025 Game and Fish Youth Conservationist of the Year. A high school senior with an impressive resume in land conservation and wildlife advocacy, Colton has addressed the Wyoming State Legislature, participated in the Wyoming Wildlife Federation Camp, Wyoming Resource Education Days, 4H, and FFA. Colton, who has a twin sister, plans to serve as a state officer while pursuing studies in wildlife biology and pre-law. On March 19, he will be officially recognized by the Wyoming Outdoor Hall of Fame as the Youth Conservationist of the Year, further cementing his role as a leader in conservation. Camo at the Capitol is a powerful reminder of how individuals, from state officials to young conservationists, contribute to the future of Wyoming's outdoor heritage. Their work ensures that public lands, wildlife, and recreation opportunities remain a cornerstone of the state's identity. For three decades, British photographer and filmmaker Chris Floyd has "Been privileged to photograph people who are the best in the World at what they do. Whether it's Stephen Hawking, Paul McCartney or David Hockney, these people have defined the era in which we live." Today, I walk in Oxfordshire with this humble powerhouse of British photography whose work has appeared in some of the world's most highly respected publications, including Vogue, Vanity Fair, The New York Times Magazine and The Sunday Times Magazine, among others. We talk about how saying YES at important moments in his life has unlocked doors to people and experiences he might never have experienced if he'd followed an expected path into accountancy. Also today, one of the most revealing answers to the question of WHY, with stories about photographing the Royal Family and 'our' Superman. There's news about Scotland 2025, plus the assignment for November set by Lynn Fraser and Jacquie Matechuk. Links to all guests and features will be on the showpage, my sincere thanks to MPB who sponsor this show and the Extra Milers without whom we wouldn't be walking each week. On Christmas Eve, 1956, a woman jumped off the Shelby Street Bridge into the Cumberland River with a baby in her arms. Host Allen Forkum (editor of The Nashville Retrospect newspaper) revisits this tragic and heroic story through interviews with people who were there, including Harold Hogue, Anne Knox, and Judy Hunt Charest. Also learn about the aftermath of the event during the decades since. (Segment begins at 04:45) (Special thanks to Mike Hudgins and Sheri Hogue for their assistance with this story.) Original caption from the Dec. 24, 1956, Nashville Banner: “Muddy waters of the Cumberland River swirl around Mrs. Milton Hunt (arrow No. 1), who clings to a steel retaining beam, and her three-and-a-half months old daughter, Judy (arrow No. 2).” In the podcast, Anne Knox mentions the two objects floating in the water. (Image: Tennessee State Library and Archives, photo by Vic Cooley) Original caption: “Jack Knox [III], 25-year-old drafting department employe of Nashville Bridge Co. holds Mrs. Hunt above the water after he had rescued the baby and then swam to where the mother was hanging on near exhaustion.” (Image: Anne Knox, Mike Hudgins, photo by Vic Cooley) Original caption: “Mrs. Hunt is pulled ashore from the Bridge Company boat. A first aid team worked on her until she could be taken to General Hospital, where she was listed in critical condition.” The man in the foreground wearing a watch is Harold Hogue, who is interviewed in the podcast. Virgil Johnson is piloting the boat. (Image: Anne Knox, Mike Hudgins) Original caption: “Gilbert M. Dorland, vice-president of Nashville Bridge Co., hold three-and-a-half months old Judy Hunt after the tot was pulled form the icy waters of Cumberland River below the firm’s building.” (Image: Anne Knox, Mike Hudgins) Original caption: “Dressed in the only available dry clothes, a bridge company baseball uniform, Knox warms up after his plunge into the icy waters shorty after 10 a.m. today. Back in the mid-nineties, a young Chris Floyd, in the early stages of his photographic career, was offered the opportunity to go to the USA for the first time by a brand new British magazine called Loaded. The one week assignment was to shoot an up and coming band from the north of England called The Verve and not surprisingly Chris jumped at the chance. Thus began a working relationship for which Chris was given complete access to the band during their meteoric rise to huge global success from late 1996 to 1997, when he documented the recording, touring and promotion of their era-defining album Urban Hymns (which remains one of the biggest selling British albums of all time) until the band, in time honoured rock n roll fashion, split up at the height of their success. Twenty years later Chris has published a book of the photographs he took during that time, published by Reel Art Press. As well as being a document of these events, the book is a celebration of what it meant to be young in the last moments of societal unself-awareness, before the explosion of the internet and social media, and it includes a section dedicated to people’s memories of 1997. Chris reflects, “For a while it felt like being at the centre of the universe. ... We were in a brief golden era, when it looked like the world was unshackling itself and beginning to develop a more advanced and progressive attitude. We seemed to be in a decade that had taken a holiday from history. I am grateful and thankful that I got to live out my twenties in such a fertile, peaceful and creative period.” Michael Holden writes in his introduction, “Those years, it turns out, were the twilight of analogue consciousness and certain seeming certainties about the world at large. Whatever we are now, we were not then. This isn’t just the everyday past we’re looking at, but another planet.” The release of the book was accompanied by an exhibition at the Art Space Bermondsey Project in London, where we recorded this conversation in front of a live audience comprised of both photography enthusiasts and loyal fans of the band.

Martha Maiwald ‘s original memoir was written in the old German (pre-Hitler) script, translated into German, and then ultimately translated into English by her daughter, Eva Baker. Maggie Holeman's memoir, Women in the Locker Room, examines her extraordinary career at the Anchorage airport and being the first woman to achieve the award of weapon proficiency at the Sitka Police Academy. And for her response to the YC-122 crash, she received a legislative commendation for bravery LaVon Bridges and Alice Wright composed chants and poems for their students to learn orally. Subsequently, they learned to read, using the poems and chants now in Alaska Animals, We Love You Betty Hedstrand’s book Clever Little Bird follows the adventures of a moose and magpie in Anchorage. This beautiful book is full of Chris Floyd’s amazing artwork.

A Small Voice: Conversations With Photographers

Chris Floyd is a British photographer and film maker. His work has appeared in some of the world’s most highly respected publications, including The New Yorker, Harpers Bazaar, GQ, Esquire and The New York Times Magazine. He has shot advertising campaigns for British Airways, Apple, Sony and Philips and has been selected several times for the National Portrait Gallery’s Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize and the annual publication, American Photography. The beginning of Chris’s career coincided with the so-called Britpop movement during the early and mid nineties when he found himself with the opportunity to cut his teeth photographing the biggest British bands of the day, starting with a bunch of unknown Mancunians who called themselves Oasis. In 2011 Chris published a project entitled ‘One Hundred And Forty Characters’. Over a period of a year he made contact with 140 people that he followed on Twitter and photographed each of them in his London studio. The idea for this came at a moment when he realised he had not spoken to any of his closest real life friends in over a month, yet he was communicating several times a week with people on Twitter that he had never met at all. The project received worldwide recognition and acclaim, with features about it on the BBC, Newsweek, The Guardian, Sunday Times, Elle, Esquire and many other publications and websites. Chris lives in England with his wife, Alice, and their two daughters.
