The Catalyst: Sparking Creative Transformation in Healthcare
Dr. Christina Bjorndal, a naturopathic doctor and authority in the treatment of mental illness joins The Catalyst to speak about her own experience with depression, bulimia and suicidality, which, at one point, left her in a coma. Yet, in a stunning message of hope she reveals that it was this latter incident that set her on a trajectory of healing, a process she says is both individual and ongoing. As human beings we are divided into four quadrants: mental, emotional, spiritual and physical. Western medicine is limited, Dr. Christina explains, focusing only on the physical aspects of mental health. Naturopathy and pharmaceuticals can work together to better treat not only symptoms of mental illness but their root causes. To get to those root causes we must be willing to dig into our own pasts. What underlying fear is the brain, which is designed to keep us safe, protecting us from? Do our problems stem from nature versus nurture, from genetics, epigenetics and/or intergenerational trauma? We often wear masks in public to hide our suffering, such as the one Dr. Christina wore throughout her time in the corporate world. However, the body will whisper that something is wrong until it yells in the form of a crisis. Dr. Christina leads us through an exercise in which we have an honest conversation with our hearts. Join today's discussion to learn more about how we can learn to check in on ourselves, starting in the smallest ways and the important difference between information and transformation. Quotes • “Anyone struggling with their mental health, suicidal ideations, depression - you're really the furthest from love for yourself that you can possibly be.” (7:21 | Dr. Christina) • “Labels help to explain a constellation of symptoms, your experience, but they don't explain how you got there. And often, that explanation is rooted in some earlier experience that predates the diagnosis.” (10:31 | Dr. Christina) • “As a human, you're comprised of the physical level, mental, the emotional and the spiritual, and Western medicine is mostly focused on the physical level.” (13:35 | Dr. Christina) • “I subscribe to the theory, a little bit more of epigenetics, which is that genes load the gun, lifestyle pulls the trigger.” (23:09 | Dr. Christina) • “Whenever you say you want something - lose 20 pounds, want to leave a relationship, job, change, whatever you say you want something, but you never do it is because you've got an unconscious sub commitment, you're committed to something else. And that's something else is often being safe, keeping you safe.” (28:51 | Dr. Christina) • “That is what depression does to you. It really clouds your judgment. It's like you're in a dark cloud and you cannot see through that cloud. You're pretty much immersed in it. However, the sun is actually still shining behind that cloud.” (34:25 | Dr. Christina) Links Connect with Dr. Christina Bjorndal, ND: Website: drchristinabjorndal.com Facebook: Dr. Christina Bjorndal Twitter: @drbjorndal YouTube: Christina Bjorndal Instagram: @drchrisbjorndal Connect with Lara: Website: https://drlarasalyer.com Instagram: @drlarasalyer Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/drlarasalyer Linked-In: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drlarasalyer/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/DrLaraSalyer TikTok: @Creativity.Doctor Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

Does there need to be a new approach to treating and handling mental health disorders? Using understanding and a naturopathic approach, previously unconsidered solutions may appear. Press play to learn: What a naturopathic approach to treatment entails Which form of bipolar is more receptive to naturopathic treatment Why finding the root of the mental health problem is so critical Doctor Of Naturopathic Medicine, Dr. Christina Bjorndal, shares her experience with her own mental health struggles and their journey to help others who struggle as well. Many practitioners and patients believe the only path to treatment of mental health disorders is purely medication prescription. However, through attempting to understand the patient and their circumstances along with a more naturalized treatment approach, success can be found where previously thought impossible. Additionally, improvements can be made to supplement more traditional treatment by ensuring that many other areas of life are in line with health standards like sleep and nutrition. If the rest of the body is aligned, the chances are that a patient struggling with their mental health will have a more solid foundation on which to build the rest of their treatment. With my book, "Transforming Trauma, a drugless and creative path to healing PTS" coming closely on the heels of "Surviving a Viral Pandemic through the lens of a naturopathic medical doctor" I invited Dr. Christina Bjorndal to share her knowledge and wisdom on mental health. A licensed naturopathic doctor and established keynote speaker on how to regain your mental health using a naturopathic approach, Dr. Chris, co-founder of Natural Terrain, a naturopathic clinic in Edmonton, she is an authority in the treatment of mental imbalances such as depression, anxiety and eating disorders. She is regularly interviewed for print magazines and online resources as a leader in her field. She is the mother of a 12 year old boy who reacted badly to a vaccine and thankfully recovered due to the efforts of Dr. Chris and her naturopathic and First Nation husband, Michael Mason-Wood. She has written four books to help others achieve physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. This is her story (abridged from her website, naturalterrain.com):"While I was doing my undergraduate degree at UBC in the late 1980s, I experienced debilitating depression and anxiety that was difficult to treat. I also had an eating disorder and was not coping with the stress I was under. Like most people, I had not heard about naturopathic medicine or orthomolecular medicine, so I was treated with conventional medications that were ineffective."Six months after starting an antidepressant, I spun into a psychotic, manic episode. It took six people to wrestle me into a straight jacket. I was injected with haloperidol and left in a rubber room to come back to reality. When I did, I was diagnosed with Bipolar disorder type 1. Since that time, I have lived in shame because of the label of bipolar disorder. I just wanted to be 'normal.'"After surviving a suicide attempt (which left me in a coma, on dialysis waiting for a kidney transplant), I finally began the healing process after reading a book called A Return to Love by Marianne Williamson. Up until that point, I'd been living with the shame and stigma of the labels I had been given, and I had not accepted myself. Since reading that book and with the help of many types of practitioners, I have come to realize that there are 10 steps to mental wellness and there are more natural ways to treat mental “dis-ease” as I outline in my book “Beyond the Label: 10 Steps to Improve your Mental Health with Naturopathic Medicine.”"The sole reason I became a naturopathic doctor is because, when I was struggling with my illness, there weren't many experts in this field. After attending the Orthomolecular Medicine Society's Mental Health Regained Public Forum in 1999, I became a patient of Dr. Abram Hoffer's and experienced my first depression-free year in 13 years. I also made some major life changes, such as resigning from my job as Head of Marketing in a global investment management firm after sitting repeatedly with the question “If money didn't matter, what would I be doing?” The answer consistently revealed itself to me over and over again: Become a naturopathic doctor and help people using natural therapies and orthomolecular medicine."Her other books include Moving Beyond: A Journal Into Self-Discovery and The Essential Diet: Eating for Mental Health. She concludes with "Have faith that you can get well. I believe you can, and I wish you all the joy there is to be found on the healing journey. Let love for yourself always be your guide."Darn good advice.

In this episode of The Healers Café, Dr. Manon Bolliger, ND, chats with Dr. Christina Bjorndal who is a Naturopathic Doctor, who is an authority in the treatment of mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorders and eating disorders. For the transcript and to listen to the full story today! https://www.drmanonbolliger.com/Dr-Christina-Bjorndal Highlights from today's episode include: Dr. Christina Bjorndal 08:47 Yeah, so the first step we want to understand is that there are four aspects to us as people. We have the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual, and a holistic approach. We want to be investigating all four of those areas. But just speaking strictly on that physical side, understand that there are three macro systems in your body essentially. You have your neurotransmitters, you have your neuroendocrine or hormonal system, and then your organs of detoxification and immune system. And imbalances can lie in any one of those three areas. Dr. Christina Bjorndal 11:36 I guess the main message I really like to leave people with is there's an explanation for your suffering. We just have to investigate it. And it naturally could be for sure on that physical level, but let's not forget the mental, emotional, spiritual sides of health too. I think that's the big problem with our system is it's focused solely on that physical level, unless you're seeing a psychologist, right. Dr. Christina Bjorndal 13:35 Yeah, so the big thing is when I'm working with people, I talk about those four aspects, and then the three macro systems in a way to support ourselves are the foundation of health is diet, sleep, exercise, and then managing stress. So this managing stress piece involves looking at our thoughts and our emotions and how we behave and react in the world. And ultimately, the other two steps that I think are important is the environment and then wrapping everything up in love and compassion and this idea of spirituality, so to speak. I am so excited to have Dr. Chris on the show today. Her book is amazing as she discusses her own struggles with emotional disorders and how she prevailed to become an incredible healer and teacher. An inspiring and empowering guide to emotional freedom, from a Naturopathic Doctor who took charge of her own life and mental health For years, Dr. Christina Bjorndal, ND, endured debilitating depression, bipolar disorder, and anxiety and battled bulimia, addiction, and a range of other mental health challenges. Finally, feeling terrorized by her own thoughts, she attempted to take her life. This devastating low point led to a deep reckoning. She began to take back control of her life. Today she is the owner of a thriving naturopathic clinic, living her life's purpose and passion in the most authentic way. In Beyond the Label, Bjorndal outlines, step-by-step, how you can move from the current mental health “label” you have been given to optimal health on all levels – physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. In Episode 039 of A Medicinal Mind: Wisdom and Wellbeing, I seek to dispel some of the myths behind mental health with naturopathic doctor, Dr. Christina Bjorndal. As you will hear in the podcast, Dr. Bjorndal's journey to becoming a holistic mental health clinician is anything but linear or easy. In this conversation, Dr. Bjorndal, shares some intimate details of her own struggle with mental illness, navigating the medical system, stigma and labels that sought to suppress her flourishing. Growing through these incredible experiences, Dr. Bjorndal offers some of her own insightful wisdom as she realized the power of nutrition, connection and emotional freedom to cultivate whole being wellness. She leads us through her own definition of health and walks us through her clinical approach to addressing mental illness, offering powerful physiologic and psychological therapies to bring about positive changes to an otherwise conflicted mind, body and spirit. Dr. Bjorndal and I even dig into some potentially controversial topics, exploring the “victim” mentality and what it means to contribute meaningfully to society. We even start to ask the question: What thoughts and beliefs are actually behind our most common habits and perceptions? Dr. Bjorndal's story and clinical work is beyond inspiring and will certainly empower anyone who has experienced mental illness. I personally resonated with one her most poignant pieces of wisdom “you will be with you longer than anyone else, so why not start focusing on the relationship with yourself first.” I hope you resonate with her authentic story and seek out some of her nourishing resources created to support people through their journeys of healing. In this episode of "A Healthy Curiosity,” we speak with Dr. Christina Bjorndal, an expert in the connection between mental health and food. Dr. Chris, as her patients know her, is gracious enough to share her past experiences with depression that led to attempted suicide and how those experiences led her to a new passion in life - the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual approach to mental health. Dr. Christina Bjorndal, ND, completed her Doctorate in naturopathic medicine from the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine. She is an authority in the treatment of mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorders and eating disorders. “It's important to remember that there are people out there who are truly struggling and hurting. We all need to love each other a little bit more.” – Dr. Chris On Today's Episode of A Healthy Curiosity: How the effects of antibiotics in your gut can negatively impact your brain. What are the beliefs that are driving you? Are they true? Wearing the mask of “Everything is okay on the outside, but I'm dying on the inside” How our diet helps build proper neurotransmitters. Identifying the essential nutrients that we can't make on our own, but need to bring in through our diet. The difference between just “eating healthy” and “eating healthy…for you!” Healing our relationships with self-worth and beginning to love life again. Key Takeaway: The real diagnosis of a mental health issue is based on what's going on inside – not what we might see on the outside. There are 4 aspects to wellness – physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Disease can and does manifest in all aspects. It's so important to recognize and learn that we do have a choice in how we shape our thinking.
