Love, Shaley About Lee: I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, cptsd, and generalized anxiety disorder in September of 2019 after surviving 15 years of suicidal thoughts and absolute chaos. Though a lot of hard work, self-awareness, and surrounding myself with a phenomenal support network, I have found some stability, contentment and success while living with bipolar disorder. A little over a year ago, I decided to share my story after not finding many relatable folks initially who were living comfortably with bipolar disorder, but especially men. While I have since found so many incredible creators, writers and friends living with bipolar disorder, I am so happy to have started an account sharing my own story. It has led to lasting and meaningful relationships with people all around the world. Over the last year, I have been lucky enough to share my story for law enforcement, at universities and for local support groups and mental health education programs. It has provided me with direction and a path that combined a passion with a path forward. Recently, I began a job (my first not in sales or restaurants!) as the Director of Education for NAMI Southeast Minnesota, which will allow me to continue this amazing journey of spreading knowledge to eliminate the stigma that follows a mental illness diagnosis. World Bipolar Day is observed on March 30th every year to raise awareness about bipolar disorder and promote education and understanding of this mental illness. This day is a collaboration between the International Bipolar Foundation, the Asian Network of Bipolar Disorder, and the International Society for Bipolar Disorders. Bipolar disorder is a mental illness characterized by periods of manic or hypomanic episodes and depressive episodes. These mood swings can be severe and can have a significant impact on an individual's life. Bipolar disorder affects people of all ages, races, and ethnicities, and can be managed with proper treatment and support. The goal of World Bipolar Day is to reduce the stigma associated with bipolar disorder and promote early diagnosis and treatment. Through education and awareness campaigns, we can help people living with bipolar disorder get the help they need and reduce the negative impact of this condition on their lives. On World Bipolar Day, organizations and individuals around the world come together to share stories, resources, and information about bipolar disorder. It is a day to celebrate the resilience of people living with bipolar disorder and to support them in their journey towards wellness. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/cbtkenya/message

If we want to look our enemy in the eye, we needn't look any further than the mirror. Our ego beguiles us, puffing us up, and our fears taunt us, pulling us down, and in some ways we really are our own worst enemy. But a line gets crossed when our delusions scramble our measure of what is real and what is fantasy. For those who suffer from bipolar disorder, this disconnect can drive them to despair, fuelled by manic accomplishment, at one end of the spectrum, and debilitating depression, at the other. Allan Cooper's first manic episode, at twenty-five, robbed him of a promising career and set his life on a course he could not have imagined. But all was not lost. Fighting his way back to life, Allan discovered new dreams and a new reason for living. In this episode of Waking Up Bipolar, Chris Cole speaks with David Leite—culinary expert, award-winning food journalist, and author of the recently-published, critically-acclaimed book, NOTES ON A BANANA: A Memoir of Food, Love, and Manic Depression. NOTES ON A BANANA is at once a tender look at growing up, a candid take on the power of self-acceptance, and an unflinching tale of the hell of mental illness. David’s story is brutally honest and necessary, creating a sense of universality and enduring hope that today’s readers need more than ever. David Leite has tackled everything from chocolate chip cookies to Welsh cakes, from the foods of Portugal to the tribulations of being a super taster—for print, radio, and television. In 1999, he founded the website Leite’s Culinaria, and in 2006 he had the distinction of being the first winner ever of a James Beard Award for a website, a feat he repeated in 2007. The following year, he won his third James Beard Award for his article on fried clams for the New York Times. His first book, THE NEW PORTUGUESE TABLE: Exciting Flavors from Europe’s Western Coast, explored the food of his heritage and won the 2010 IACP First Book/Julia Child Award. David is also a regular correspondent and guest host on NPR’s “The Splendid Table.” He splits his time between Connecticut and New York, but will travel anywhere for a good meal. As you’ll hear in the interview, I am immensely grateful for David’s work, both because of his advocacy, and particularly because of how successful of a life and career he enjoys today. I hope for more visibility for such invisibility, and David is a wonderful example of this courage. Keep up with David Leite by visiting his blog at leitesculinaria.com.
