In this power-packed episode of The Food Professor Podcast, hosts Michael LeBlanc and Dr. Sylvain Charlebois bring listeners up to speed on one of the most complex and fast-moving stories in the global food and agriculture sector: the unfolding international tariff war. Appropriately titled “The Global Tariff War Edition,” this episode features a timely and incisive interview with Mark Warner, Managing Director at MAAW Law and one of North America's leading experts on trade, investment, and competition law.The conversation kicks off with Michael and Sylvain diving into the latest developments in U.S.–China trade tensions, which have seen tariffs skyrocket to 125% on inbound U.S. goods into China. They explore the ripple effects on key commodities like soybeans and canola, discuss the surprising resilience of commodity markets, and examine why Canada isn't positioned to step in as a major alternative supplier. The hosts also explore cultural signals from the food world, including the increasing trend of Americans packing lunches and the declining use of doggy bags in restaurants—signs Sylvain suggests may point to growing economic insecurity and workplace anxiety. In the second half of the show, Michael and Sylvain sit down with Mark Warner, who brings deep legal and historical context to the tariff debate. Warner unpacks how the Trump administration is using the rarely-invoked International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to sidestep traditional trade channels. He outlines the risks and potential rewards for Canadian agri-food exporters navigating this new landscape, and why subtle diplomacy—not headline-grabbing bravado—may serve Canada better in the long run. From trade agreements and geopolitical strategy to supply management and softwood lumber, Warner's nuanced take is essential listening for anyone working in, or watching, the agri-food space. And there's also a moment of celebration: Dr. Sylvain Charlebois shares his recent honour—receiving the prestigious Charles III Coronation Medal from the Lieutenant Governor of Quebec. In a heartfelt reflection, he dedicates the medal to his wife, Janelle, recognizing her essential support in his research and public policy work. It's a well-deserved acknowledgment of Sylvain's national impact on food policy and scholarship. With sharp insight, humour, and a dash of royal recognition, this episode offers listeners a blend of timely news and expert analysis that defines The Food Professor Podcast.Tune into Bite Sized!Corus Entertainment is excited to add a brand-new topical program to its Talk Radio lineup on April 12called Bite Sized, which explores the business of food in the country. 640 Toronto Saturdays at 2 p.m. ET980 CFPL Sundays at 9 a.m. ET680 CJOB Sundays at 2 p.m. CST770 QR Calgary Sundays at 3 p.m. MST880 CHED Sundays at 3 p.m. MST730 CKNW Sundays at 1 p.m. PSTAbout MarkMark is an Ontario and New York attorney who has practiced trade, investment and competition law in Toronto, New York, Washington, D.C and Brussels and as counsel to the OECD in Paris. This week, we start off with a sobering call to action regarding the uncertain future of our beloved Nelvana before awkwardly segueing into talking about one of their longest running series. Financial mismanagement and executive payoffs over at Corus Entertainment may very well lead to the shuttering of one of Canada's most prolific animation studios, and while talking about what a momentous loss that would be for our industry, we also chat a bit about Nelvana's Max and Ruby. A show about bunny siblings for babies that we both hated. Episode covered for the podcast is Episode 26 "Max's Thanksgiving/Max's Pretend Friend/Fireman Max." Written by Kate Barris, Patrick Granleese, and James Backshall. Directed by Steven Boeckler. Original airdate April 27, 2004. Another episode years in the making. Scot Turner recently retired from Evanov Radio in Brantford, Ontario. Scot discussed his experiences in radio programming, sharing insights on how to navigate challenges and create successful radio stations, including CFNY, 94.5 The Beat, Dave-FM in Kitchener, and many more. Scot emphasized the importance of blending genres, catering to a specific audience, and adapting to changing listener preferences. We also discussed the evolution of dance music on radio, particularly in the 1980s and 1990s, and the challenges and opportunities in urban radio programming in Canada during the early 1990s.We got deep into the weeds on the integration of hip hop and urban music into Canadian radio formats and the impact of streaming platforms on traditional radio. Highlighted are the nostalgia and importance of CFNY, culminating in a forthcoming documentary supported by Corus Entertainment. Finally, we emphasized the significance of celebrating radio's history through anniversaries and innovative programming, offering a rich perspective on the medium's past and future.A transcript and a video version of the show are available on our network site. Thanks to the following organizations for supporting the show:Nlogic - TV & Radio Audience Data SolutionsMary Anne Ivison at Ivison Voice. - Make her the female voice of your radio station.Matt Fogarty Voiceovers - It's great to have Matt back for 2024 supporting our show. Matt Vettese's career journey in radio has lasted 13 years... so far. He was caught up in layoffs last November when he was an unexpected budget cut at Big 101.1 in Barrie, Ontario. Over his time in radio, he worked in places like Peace River, Alberta and Thunder Bay, Ontario, and what he learned was the importance of connecting with listeners regardless of station size. We also spoke about the strength of social media a in a medium and smaller size market, where you are literally the only media game in town.We also geeked out a bit about music, podcast and his studio set up - which is very cool!Matt is currently teaching radio skills at Mohawk College while remaining open to new career opportunities.A transcript of the show is available here, Thanks to our supporters!Nlogic - TV & Radio Audience Data SolutionsMary Anne Ivison at Ivison Voice. - Make her the female voice of your radio station.Matt Fogarty Voiceovers - It's great to have Matt back for 2024 supporting our show. With Leigh Naturkach at the Mosaic Institute. We're still not doing enough to end gendered digital hate, harassment, and abuse on a large scale. Perhaps that can give us the impression that the public doesn't care or we're all too complacent to do anything about it. The numbers tell us otherwise. In 2023, the Canadian Women's Foundation found that 88% of people in Canada believe we need to make changes so online spaces are safer for everyone. Fifty-eight per cent of women in particular strongly agree with this idea. Likewise, 88% of people in Canada believe social media companies have a responsibility to keep users safe from hate and abuse on their platforms. Despite outsized voices to the contrary, the vast majority of people in Canada want safer digital spaces and we want accountability for users. We're almost at the end of our series delving into gendered digital hate and harassment with leading experts and content creators. We've been talking about the problem and what we can do to change it. We've offered practical tips to help you in your digital life, and we've talked about what it means to “take back the tech” for all of us. Our guest Leigh Naturkach is Executive Director at the Mosaic Institute. Prior to this, Leigh worked at Women's College Hospital Foundation, AIDS Committee of Toronto, right here at the Canadian Women's Foundation, and in media at Corus Entertainment. Her volunteer experience spans two decades in both leadership and frontline roles, focused on gender equity, reproductive justice, support for young people, and in end-of-life rights and care. The LGBTQIA+ community and psychiatry have had a very troubled past, especially when it comes to schizophrenia. Some of the first theories for the causes of schizophrenia actually centered around bisexual desires. There were even theories that people living with schizophrenia were all asexual due to the negative symptoms of schizophrenia. And those are just two examples. In this episode, we discuss LGBTQIA+ issues in relation to schizophrenia, what psychiatry got wrong, and what current studies are showing. We also hear directly from an openly transgender man who lives with schizophrenia. We're joined by guest Lucas Silveira, a Canadian vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter from Toronto. He was the frontman of The Cliks, and is credited with being the first openly transgender man to have signed to a major record label. To learn more -- or read the transcript -- please visit the official episode page. Our guest, Lucas Silveira, frontman of The Cliks, now a solo artist, made history as the first openly transgender man signed by a major label with Warner Music, Tommy Boy/Silver Label in 2006. He's graced global stages alongside Cyndi Lauper, The B-52's, Debbie Harry, Tegan and Sara, The Cult, and The New York Dolls. As co-host of Vice's Shine True in 2021, he expanded into TV. With over 25 years of live musical experience, Lucas is a seasoned and heartfelt musician and vocalist. Presently a solo performer, he skillfully accompanies himself on acoustic guitar and piano, and has shared his music across the world, from Canada and the US to Europe and Asia. He has given keynote speeches for Warner Music Canada, Hydro One, Corus Entertainment, and EGALE Canada, spanning schools to corporations, addressing his experience as a transgender musician in the mainstream music industry, trans community, lateral violence, and mental health awareness. "The Goddamn Flowers" marks Lucas Silveira's stark departure, delving into personal turmoil, love, and darkness. Written over nine years, amidst mental health struggles and diagnosed schizoaffective disorder in 2021, this album challenges stigmas. Lucas champions the role of medication in fostering creativity and offers a transformative journey from chaos to enlightenment, proving the power of turning pain into artistry. Our host, Rachel Star Withers, creates videos documenting her schizophrenia, ways to manage and let others like her know they are not alone and can still live an amazing life. She has written Lil Broken Star: Understanding Schizophrenia for Kids and a tool for schizophrenics, To See in the Dark: Hallucination and Delusion Journal. Fun Fact: She has wrestled alligators. To learn more about Rachel, please visit her website, RachelStarLive.comm. Our cohost, Gabe Howard, is an award-winning writer and speaker who lives with bipolar disorder. He is the author of the popular book, "Mental Illness is an Asshole and other Observations," available from Amazon; signed copies are also available directly from the author. Gabe makes his home in the suburbs of Columbus, Ohio. He lives with his supportive wife, Kendall, and a Miniature Schnauzer dog that he never wanted, but now can't imagine life without. It has been a whirlwind couple of weeks for Canada's first lady of entertainment news, Cheryl Hickey. The big hit was learning that the series she has hosted for 18 seasons, ET Canada, was being shut down by Corus Entertainment. Hickey admits the move, which took effect Oct. 6, caught her as much by surprise as it did others in the industry. The native of Shallow Lake, Ont. a very small town near Owen Sound, started her career at Global 24 years ago. That's pretty much the last time I interviewed her. That interview took place at five thousand feet -- Hickey was a helicopter reporter at the time! This relaxed and fun chat was much more down to earth, with Hickey walking me through her star-studded career. I quiz her on her many Hollywood encounters and her stories about Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Quincy Jones and Kiefer Sutherland are all red carpet worthy.Hickey's own story is loaded with drive, determination, hutzpah and plenty of family support. Her aspirations and example should encourage others in Canada to reach for the stars -- even though her series no longer will. What's next for Hickey? She doesn't tell me everything now, but I'm looking forward to our next conversation.

If you've been following along on my social media accounts over the years, you've seen a fair bit of this week's guest. She was my first friend in Kingston, Ontario when I moved away for my first full-time radio job. She became the kind of friend I had to visit quarterly, or vice-versa after only seven months in the Limestone City. Our path's crossed again when we both found ourselves single and trying to make it in the biggest broadcasting market in Canada: Toronto. With broken hearts and single-gal budgets, we became roommates (until she fell in love. I'm not mad about it!!) Morganne Campbell is a reporter and videographer, or as they call her at Global News, a digital broadcast journalist. Campbell was a videographer and assignment editor with CKWS TV in Kingston, Ont., before becoming a digital broadcast journalist in the Maritimes. She first joined Corus Entertainment in 2009 and became a familiar face in Kingston during her coverage of the Russell Williams and Shafia Family murder trials in 2011 and 2012, both of which were covered for Corus-owned television and radio stations across the country. Born and raised in Castleton, Ont., Morganne studied journalism at Loyalist College in Belleville, Ont., where she attended on a scholarship. Morganne has experience in print, radio and television working at stations across Ontario including CTV Barrie and CHEX News Peterborough and has instructed OPP officers in media courses at East Region Headquarters in Smiths Falls, Ont., in addition to volunteering and teaching young students about the industry. Melani Mariani is a radio announcer based in Toronto, currently hosting Middays at Indie88 (88.1 CIND FM). She is a former host for 102.1 The Edge in Toronto where she quite literally "worked her way up the ladder" from receptionist to morning show. In this episode of the Women in Media Podcast, Mel talks about being real with her listeners during a global pandemic with divided opinions and unexpected highs and lows. Melani touches on how she worried about starting a family and how it would affect her personality on-air. She also talks about how insecure a radio job can be, especially when you're pregnant for the second time. She reflects on a difficult experience at the Edge when she was fired shortly after she got pregnant with her second daughter, Margot. Melani and I first crossed paths at The Edge where I worked part-time during my time at FM96 in London. I'm lucky enough to call her a colleague again at Indie88 and I'm not lying when I say she may be the nicest person I've ever met in Canadian radio! I loved her analogy about all of us women being onions! Have a listen to see why the episode is titled this way...enjoy!Listen to Mel on Indie88Follow Mel on InstagramFollow Mel on Twitter

Liz Trinnear and I go WAY back and have so much in common. We graduated from the same University program (Media, Information & Technoculture at the University of Western Ontario), and we both took our first steps in the media industry at Corus Entertainment in London, Ontario, Canada. We were both hired as "summer cruiser" radio personalities one summer while finishing our studies. That essentially meant driving our respective radio station vehicles around, blasting music, and reporting live from summer events. What we really couldn't see at the time was that we both had bright futures ahead of us, and there was room for BOTH OF US.As the LA Correspondent for Etalk on CTV, she is working from home, applying make-up and adding lights as necessary! Liz and her husband (Nathaniel Motte of 3OH!3) are waiting out the pandemic in Boulder, Colorado before returning to Los Angeles.
