See pictures and read more on materiallyspeaking.comOriginally from Zurich, Maja was always keen to leave Switzerland and with an Italian grandmother perhaps Italy was always going to be her destination. She moved to Italy in 1991.She speaks to us about how her approach to work has changed. When she was young she liked seeing the impression her hands made on the work, while now she seeks smoothness and perfection. We meet Maja at her home - Artists Hill - an old farmhouse, surrounded by olive groves and a huge vegetable garden, which she has renovated into a home, studios, and a part that she rents out.First Maja shows us the room where she draws, and then we move over to her new modelling studio, opposite the house. In the middle of this room, towering above her, is a spiral column. It's a plastercast - soon to be realised in acrylic resin and earth.Maja tells us about a bas relief project in 16 panels called dressing. The question she originally posed was, “Can we change religion like clothes or is religion something inherent to us, you know, is it like part of us?"One of Maja's first pieces was Extension of Ego and now it takes pride of place in her studio. Maja still loves it and it represents the theme she still develops of externalising human traits in her work.Labrynth is another of Maja's pieces that follows the theme of a body's outside reflecting what is inside.majathommen.chinstagram.com/thommenmaja

See pictures and read more on materiallyspeaking.comOriginally from Oregon, John moved around America a lot as a child. Although he was not formally schooled as an artist, he received his education at a young age while travelling with his family through Europe and the Middle East. There he took in many of the great works of antiquity.John came to sculpture in his thirties from a background in painting, and very quickly began carving monumental pieces which he was able to sell. It was at this time that he experienced a revelation when he began to imagine how stone carvers worked in the past.Although this technique is much less practised nowadays, he believes that for thousands of years sculptors worked without eye protection. They discovered what John refers to as profile carving. John describes himself as a direct, flexible, profile carver. The first piece John mentions is a big reclining figure which earned John enough money to allow him to come back to Pietrasanta and work. Recently the owner of that piece died and John was able to buy it back in an auction.John also tells of the gravestone he carved which is in the cemetery of Querceta, near Pietrasanta which is a Pieta of 5 life-size figures.Another piece, a pair of lovers, John carved from a special piece of marble he had kept for 16 years. As he was carving the embrace he had a moving experience as he felt them pushing themselves into each other, as though they couldn't get close enough. Now John divides his time between the Redwood forests of California and Pietrasanta - drawing inspiration from the world around. He acknowledges a great debt to the cavatore, the quarrymen. Without quarrymen, artists don't have the material to work with.johnfishersculpture.cominstagram.com/giovannipescatore51

In this episode, Diane Little and Dr. Rita interview a pioneer of public service in North Carolina Surluta Anthony was the first Black woman elected to Monroe City Council—despite Monroe has a majority Black population. Now elected for the third turn, Ms. Anthony provides valuable insights and advice on what it means to be in public service and how to do it well. Miss Anthony shares how she ran for office to “be at the table” of decision-making and how she stayed through her principles of “Service before self' along with a great dose of courage and political savviness. She was influenced by Robert F. Williams' activism, also a local to Monroe. She speaks about how she thrived in public service, how it's her purpose, how she found that out and how she brought DEI work to Monroe.A personal favorite: she shared what is missing from our current discourse on public service: feeling valued and capable of making a difference. Surluta Belton Anthony was born October 4, 1947 at home on Winchester Ave to educators Dr. Edward and Mrs. Christine Belton. She had a happy nurturing childhood in a Christian, socially and civic aware household. She talked early and read well at four. She had an early love of community fostered by her parents. She attended the segregated Winchester Ave School from first to twelfth grades , serving as class President in the sixth, eighth, tenth and twelfth grades. Her leadership skills extended to North Carolina Central University where she was president of the Annie Day Shepherd Freshman Women's Dorm and representative to student government. Surluta is a graduate of Anson Community College, Pfeiffer University and the Sure Theological Institute.Taking office in 2013, Surluta was the first Black woman elected to Monroe City Council; she is currently serving her third term. Resources: Surluta Anthony's email: sulutaanthony@gmail.comOriginally recorded on June 25, 2024.Support the Show.To recomend a guest contact us at: media@FierroConsultingllc.com To support Collective Power join our Patreon

Michael Crichton: B2B Marketing Lessons from the Author of Jurassic Park with the CMO of Promo.com, Joel Horwitz

Remarkable Marketing

It's easy to get technical when you're writing copy about a highly technical subject. But that's when you lose your audience.Instead ask, "What problem is this solving for my customer?" And explain it in their language. That's one strategy inspired by Michael Crichton that we're exploring today with the CMO of Promo.com, Joel Horwitz. Together, we talk about writing in layman's terms, thoroughly researching the problem you're trying to solve, and learning something new about marketing every day.About our guest, Joel HorwitzJoel is an experienced High-Tech Marketing professional with a diverse background in data science & engineering, product strategy and digital marketing. Prior to Promo.com, he was the Chief Marketing Officer of AudioEye where he led the Go-To-Market team with a Product-Led Growth Strategy that helped grow the company from less than 300 customers to over 30,000 in a year. Prior to that, at IBM, he championed the value of a Digital Go-To-Market as the Global Vice President of Strategic Partnerships and Digital Offerings for IBM's Digital Business Group. In addition, his extensive background in Data + AI has helped him lead breakthrough customer experiences including the AudioEye Accessibility Solution, IBM Data Science Experience, Alpine Data Labs Modeler, Datameer Sheets for Hadoop, H2O.ai Sparkling Water, and more; through the introduction of platform partnerships, self-service offerings, and digital go-to-market.Joel holds an MBA in International Business from the University of Pittsburgh, an MS and BS in Nanotechnology from the College of Engineering at the University of Washington, Seattle, WA. He is a board member of NUMFocus, an advisor to a number of startups, and a volunteer in his local community. About Promo.comOriginally launched in 2016 as a B2B video creation and distribution platform, Promo.com has since won numerous awards, scored top customer reviews and has been deployed by Fortune 500 companies for social media marketing purposes for 10,000+ Brands. Promo.com's latest product, PromoAI Copilot, soft-launched in October 2023, gaining over 1,000 customers who are now using the Promo.com Platform. Its latest product, PromoAI Copilot is now available at Promo.com or on the OpenAI GPT Store.About Michael CrichtonMichael Crichton is the late award-winning author, screenwriter and filmmaker, having passed away in 2008. He's most known for having written Jurassic Park and having created ER. He was incredibly prolific. So he's also known for books, movies and TV shows like The Andromeda Strain, The Lost World, Westworld, and all the other Jurassic movies (Jurassic Park III, Jurassic World, etc.) He also wrote frequently under the pseudonym John Lange of Jeffery Hudson. He has sold 200 million books, and his books have been translated into 38 languages, and 13 of them have been made into movies. He has an Emmy and a Peabody among other awards. What B2B Companies Can Learn From Michael Crichton:Write in layman's terms. Even when it's a highly technical product or concept, write so the general reader can understand your topic. Joel says, “What makes Michael Crichton remarkable is his ability to explain highly complex and difficult ideas in a way that a nine year old can understand them. If you're in the high tech industry, you're working with cryptocurrencies, blockchain, artificial intelligence, machine learning, or large language models. All this stuff is very difficult to understand if you're a novice. So if you can communicate these ideas and not just explain them for what they are, but then to try to compel somebody to be interested in these ideas and then extrapolate a whole story and a whole vision of where this could take us, that to me is Remarkable.”Thoroughly research the problem you're trying to solve. Become an expert on the topic and then teach your audience about it. Explaining how your product solves the problem in detail and backing it up with research builds credibility as well as drives engagement and conversion. Joel says, “Ultimately, marketers are teachers. What are we really doing with content marketing? We're teaching people about how to think about a particular product area. A lot of the work goes into really making sure you've got the problem right that you need to solve. Not as much on the solutioning side. Usually it's like, ‘What is the problem that we're trying to actually solve here?' And researching that.” And he adds, “Not just reading, but actually, for example, going to the location or going out and actually talking to customers.”Learn something new about marketing every day. Ask questions and be intensely curious. Learn from your peers, from Google searches, or subscribe to a newsletter like Harry Dry's, Devin Reed's or Emily Kramer's. Joel says, “Constantly be learning, coming into things with a beginner's mindset. I think that's another big thing Michael Crichton does well. He asks a lot of good questions. My grandfather told me the smartest men and women ask the best questions. They act as if you don't know something because that's how you learn.”Quotes*”I was never one for the big unveil. I've always been like, ‘All right, what are the things that we can incrementally change and test to see if we're moving things in the right direction?'” - Joel Horwitz*”I think we often think of, ‘Who's that one ideal customer profile or who's that one champion that we need to target?' But these decisions, especially B2B, they're never made by a single person. It's almost always a team. And so it's really helpful for me to think about, ‘Who are the different personalities in the room that I'm speaking to?' Because I think if you can convince them or they can all see kind of their own story, their own journey, and how this product or how the solution is going to help them, I think you have a much better chance of getting their attention.” - Joel HorwitzTime Stamps[0:55] Meet Joel Horwitz, CMO of Promo.com[1:35] Why are we talking about Michael Crichton?[5:41] What does Joel's work at Promo.com entail?[8:27] Who is Michael Crichton?[13:22] What was Michael Crichton's creative process?[17:35] What makes Michael Crichton remarkable?[32:56] What B2B marketing lessons can we take from Michael Crichton?[50:13] What have Joel's favorite campaigns been over the years?[53:10] What's next for Promo.com?LinksLearn more about Michael CrichtonConnect with Joel on LinkedInLearn more about Promo.comAbout Remarkable!Remarkable! is created by the team at Caspian Studios, the premier B2B Podcast-as-a-Service company. In this episode, we navigate the importance of intention as the fuel that mobilizes life. We look into how intention helps direct the flow of life and face the unknown, but also how we must release control for it to show its full power. We also discuss some current events such as war that tend to disempower--and reveal how we can indeed stand in our own power no matter what is happening in the rest of the world.  Our guest, Yvonne DeVastey, is a Reiki Master teacher with a wealth of experience in the mental health field as a family therapist and administrator shares her experiences. We navigate the differences between the services our systems provide, and sometimes pay for, and actual journeys of healing. We explore definitions of health and healing, how healing journeys impact changes of direction in our personal lives and sometimes the lives of our families, too. A variety of healing practices and some insights on how to value your intuition on which one is for you. In this episode we connect journeys of personal and family healing, with the way our health systems do, or don't address healing.Resources mentioned on the show: Seat of the Soul book Yvonne's email: cloudsunlimited@aol.comOriginally recorded on April 6, 2022. Support the show

He is currently founder and head of his own voice over company, Greg O'Brien Voiceovers, www.gregobrienvo.comOriginally from Ramsey, New Jersey, Greg's Radio career began as an intern at 102.7 WNEW/New York during his late 20s while working in the banking industry. Those years were essential to Greg in developing an appreciation for Radio, while receiving hands on knowledge and experience from the heritage WNEW air staff, including Dave Herman, Scott Muni. Carol Miller and Ray White among others. Just up the New York State Thruway, there was an on-air position opening at WPDH/Poughkeepsie. Greg got the job, and as the Dyson family owned Crystal Radio Group grew, adding more Radio Stations to its portfolio, Greg segued into Programming. As Radio Ownership changes began to happen with these Radio Stations, Greg decided to pursue his passion for the voiceover industry. After spending 14 years with Bill Young Productions as a national voice talent, Greg stepped out on his own to begin his own voiceover company. In part one of this four part AIRCHECK session, Greg tells us about his very nontraditional career path. It's a journey that brought Greg from the banking industry to an internship at New York's 102.7 WNEW-FM, on-air talent, Program Director, and into the Voiceover industry. You can download or stream every episode of AIRCHECK from Apple Podcasts,  Spotify, and Google Podcasts.  You  can also ask your Smart Speaker to “Play Aircheck Podcast”.If you're a radio vet with a story to tell we want to hear from you.Email us at Aircheckme@gmail.comFollow us on Facebook:  facebook.com/aircheckmeTell us what you think and your favorite episode!

Solo equine vets make up 37% of all equine veterinarians. Many people think of group practice as the only way to go after graduation, but  if you want to forge your own path as an equine veterinarian, you can do it! And you won't be alone in doing so. While not every aspect of solo practice is perfect, there are many upsides to owning your own business and that is what we discuss today. My guests are awesome human beings and amazing colleagues. I am honored to have them join me for this really important topic.Let's meet our guests...Amelie McAndrews, DVMMcAndrews@gardenstateequine.comwww.gardenstateequine.comOriginally from Connecticut, Dr. McAndrews completed an internship at a general and referral practice in Arizona before spending five years at a general equine practice in New Jersey. During her time as a general practitioner, her interests and caseload became increasingly focused on equine dentistry. She found she could significantly improve her patient's quality of life by addressing problems found through a comprehensive oral exam. Garden State Equine Veterinary Dentistry was founded with the goal of being able to help more horses through better oral health. Dr. McAndrews spent years training under Dr. David Foster, a founding member of the American Veterinary Dental College - Equine Specialty who retired from private general equine dental practice in 2015. She travels frequently to train with equine veterinary dental specialists, presents to equine veterinarians on dental disease, and teaches equine dentistry to veterinary students. She regularly attends equine dentistry continuing education meetings and wet labs. Dr. McAndrews is one of only a handful of veterinarians completing an equine dental residency training program. She is also a clinical associate at the University of Pennsylvania New Bolton Center....Caitlin Daly, DVMhttps://www.midcoastequine.com/midcoastequine@gmail.comDr. Caitlin Daly has been involved with horses since she was a young child. Her experience with various breeds and riding disciplines has supplemented her understanding of each horse's specific needs. By taking the time to develop a special relationship with her clients and their horses, she is a fundamental part of the team that keeps horses healthy and performing to the best of their ability. After graduating from Miami University in 2007, Dr. Daly worked as a technician at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in Lexington, Kentucky. In 2011, Dr. Daly received her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Prior to moving to Maine, she completed an internship at Wilhite and Frees Equine Hospital outside of Kansas City, Missouri. In 2018, Dr. Daly became certified in Veterinary Medical Manipulation and in 2019, Dr. Daly became a Certified Veterinary Acupuncturists with a focus on Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine.Dr. Daly started Mid Coast Equine in 2013 to allow her to expand her personalized care to more horses and their owners. She has a special interest in wellness care, dentistry, lameness, and veterinary medical manipulation (chiropractic care). Outside of veterinary medicine, Dr. Daly enjoys running, hiking and spending time with her pets....Connect with The Whole Veterinarian via Instagram or at the website....Find out more about the Sustainability in Equine Practice Seminar and Retreat HERE!
