This week we are discussing the 2002 wuxia epic: Hero (英雄). Join us as we talk about the stunning visuals, colorful chapters, understanding martial arts films, political readings, Indy's love of Tony Leung (and most of the cast, really), Chinese history, and a bunch of other things I've already forgotten.   I Love This You Should Too is hosted by Samantha and Indy Randhawa   Hero (Chinese: 英雄; pinyin: Yīngxióng) is a 2002 wuxia martial arts film[3] directed, co-written, and produced by Zhang Yimou, and starring Jet Li, Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Maggie Cheung, Zhang Ziyi, Donnie Yen and Chen Daoming.[4] The cinematography was by Christopher Doyle, and the musical score composed by Tan Dun. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 75th Academy Awards. The historical background of the film refers to the Warring States Period in ancient China, when China was divided into seven states. In 227–221 BC, the Qin state was about to unify the other six states, assassins from the six states were sent to assassinate the king of Qin. One of the most famous incidents was Jing Ke's attempted assassination of the King of Qin.

"'Fake it before you make it' is an ignoble product of Silicon Valley," said Christopher Manning, director of the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at Stanford University, commenting on some researchers at the university who plagiarized the achievements by institutions such as China's Tsinghua University. On May 29, a research team at Stanford University released a large model called Llama3-V, claiming it can achieve the same effects as large models such as GPT-4V with a pre-training cost of only US$500. The news was widely spread on social media and in the academic community of artificial intelligence.5月29日,斯坦福大学一个研究团队发布名为Llama3-V的大模型,声称只要500美元的预训练成本,就能用它获得比肩GPT-4V等著名大模型的效果。 However, industry insiders soon suspected that the Standford team plagiarized the MiniCPM-Llama3-V 2.5 large model released by Tsinghua University and other Chinese institutions. Both Llama3-V and the MiniCPM-Llama3-V 2.5 large model are based on the open-source Llama3 large model. Still, the team in Tsinghua conducted unique training, including using the "Tsinghua Bamboo Slips," a collection of Chinese texts written on strips of bamboo which date back to the Warring States Period (475-221 BC), to train the model to recognize ancient Chinese characters. Tests show that the model released by the Stanford University team can also recognize the "Tsinghua Bamboo Slips." We are quite sure that the Stanford team has plagiarized our big model research results," Liu Zhiyuan, a tenured associate professor of the Department of Computer Science at Tsinghua University, told Xinhua. The data we scanned and annotated word by word from the 'Tsinghua Bamboo Slips' has never been made public, and Llama3-V has shown the same ability to identify the 'Tsinghua Bamboo Slips,' even the error examples are the same," said Liu, who is also a member of the Tsinghua big model team. As doubt accumulated, the Stanford team deleted the database and promotion articles on the Internet, Liu said, adding "from the evidence and their reactions, the nature of plagiarism has been relatively confirmed." Following Manning's criticism, two members of the Stanford team, Aksh Garg and Siddharth Sharma, formally apologized on social media. We've taken all references to Llama3-V down and we apologize once again for the inconvenience we may have caused," they said. Amid the current AI boom, this incident has aroused widespread attention. It shows that although the United States is leading in AI technologies overall, it is far from omnipotent. The Silicon Valley where Stanford University is located is considered to be the center of innovation in the United States. She was regarded as a female Steve Jobs but was later found to have fooled everyone and was sentenced to imprisonment for fraud. When Google's artificial intelligence model Gemini Pro was asked in Chinese who it was, it would answer that it was "Ernie Bot", a Chinese big model developed by Baidu. Industry insiders believe that the reason may be that Google "referenced" the relevant data of the large model "Ernie Bot" when training its large model. China's AI research has an increasing influence," Liu said, noting the plagiarism incident reflects that "our innovative achievements are attracting international attention."“中国人工智能研究的国际影响力越来越大”,刘知远说,并指出抄袭事件反映了“我们的创新成果正在受到国际关注”。Overall, there is still a significant gap between China's research level and the world's top level, but in some specific segments such as AI innovation, China has rapidly grown into an important promoter, he added.

Mò Dí (墨翟), better known as Mòzǐ or “Master Mò,” flourished c. 430 BCE in what is now Tengzhou, Shandong Province, China. Likely an artisan by craft, Mò Dí attracted many dedicated followers and founded the philosophical school of Mohism during China's Warring States Period (475 - 221 BCE).Like other philosophers of his day, including the better-known Confucius, Mò Dí traveled from state to state to persuade rulers to adopt policies intended to end war, alleviate poverty, install meritocracy, and promote the welfare of all. The Emperor of Qin is one of the most important historical figures in Chinese history. The word "China" derives from the dynasty that he built, the Qin Dynasty. We will use 2 episodes to tell the story of Ying Zheng, which is his former name. In today's episode, we will turn our focus on his life before the establishment of the Qin Dynasty. During the Warring States Period, all 7 states were constantly attempting to conquer each other. Ying Zheng became king at the age of 13, launched his military operations when he was 30, eventually eliminating all 6 states within 9 years of time. However, it wasn't always easy unifying the 6 states. "Jing Ke's assassination of the Emperor of Qin" is passed on till this day, which tells the story of a warrior named Jing Ke, and his attempt to kill Ying Zheng.   ◉ Read transcripts for free ◉ Quizlet flashcards ◉ Become a Patron ◉ Our new merch store! ◉ Find us on YouTube ◉ We are on LinkedIn ◉ We are on Facebook ◉ Find a Chinese teacher on italki and receive $10 ◉ One-time Donate

Support us on Patreon --- In 1549, a Portuguese priest and a Japanese pirate disembarked on the port of Kagoshima with one purpose: to bring Christianity to the islands of Japan. They would be remarkably successful. Within 50 years, hundreds of thousands of Japanese people had been baptized, from lowly fishermen and merchants to powerful noblemen at the center of the shogun's circle. Yet after 100 years, almost all trace of this foreign religion had vanished. This episode is this first of a series covering the history of Christianity in Japan, which is going to explore how this faith, once praised by no less than the great warlord Oda Nobunaga, came to be persecuted with a fervor rivaling the Spanish Inquisition being carried thousands of miles away in Europe. Liam and Russian Sam explore how the 16th century brought political and religious upheavals to both Japan and Europe. In the east, this came in the form of the Warring States Period, or Sengoku Jidai, when samurai, shoguns, and Buddhist warrior-monks fought for control of Japan. In the west, the Protestant Reformation split Europe apart and led to the formation of the Jesuits, a well-connected order of priests commanded to spread the power of the Catholic Church by any means necessary. What caused the civil war that tore Japan into pieces? Why were many Japanese people so accepting of a foreign religion? And where do the pirates come in? The Sengoku Period, also known as the Warring States Period, was a turbulent and violent period of Japanese history when rival warlords or daimyo fought bitterly for control of Japan. The period falls within the Muromachi period (Muromachi Jidai, 1333-1573 CE) of Japanese medieval history when the Ashikaga shogun capital was located in the Muromachi area of Heiankyo (Kyoto). The beginning of the Sengoku period witnessed the Onin War (1467-1477 CE) which destroyed Heiankyo. The fighting that followed over the next century would eventually reduce the warlords to only a few hundred in number as the country was effectively carved up into princedoms. Eventually, one warlord rose above all his rivals: Oda Nobunaga, who set Japan on the road to unification from 1568 CE. This is a special solocast, reflecting on Ni-Cheng's morning in dragon boat paddling camp with Nathan Salazar, head coach of Team USA for the US Dragon Boat Federation for multiple divisions. So many lessons in paddling apply to life! Dragon boat racing originated 2,500 years ago, during the Warring States Period (402-221 BC). Duan Wu Jieh or the Duan Wu Festival when dragon boat racing traditionally occurs originates from the story of Qu Yuan, who was a poet and high-ranking official of the Warring States Period who drowned himself out of sorrow at the defeat of his court by a corrupt kin. To honor him, villagers went out in the river with boats and drums and threw sticky rice dumplings (zongzi) into the water to prevent fish from eating his body. The date of Qu Yuan's death is the same day of the Duan Wu Festival. Dragon boating became popular again in 1976 in Hong Kong and now is internationally renowned for being a sport of inclusion especially for cancer survivors. At least seventeen studies have proven that women who have undergone axillary lymph node dissection and, can be able to safely engage in strenuous, repetitive upper body exercise without fear of lymphedema, and furthermore, the upper body exercise has positive benefits on muscle strength, body composition, self-esteem, quality of life.  The life lessons from paddling in summary:  Take time to pause and settle before embarking.  Unburden your boat of life, in fact how can you shift some baggage to help you move forward, instead of continuing to weigh you down? Our favourite Serge Laget game is Senji. "Senji" is a contraction of "Sengoku Jidai," or Warring States Period, which refers to over a century of near total civil war in Japan that started in 1467. Scholars differ as to when it ended, but mostly we can agree that it started when I traded Huey my grandpa in exchange for boats and then he shipped ol' gramps to Louis' estate. I found this out the hard way when my armies marched on Château Louis to be met with my ex-grandpa. I was a bit miffed, but I was able to use Huey's boat to steal his best stuff, so I guess I got over it. As a professional martial artist, I've made it a career for more than a decade to teach people from all walks of life, young and old, how to remain safe. Discovery of self preservation and safety is not merely about learning a technique to apply against a bad guy, although most martial arts systems today are systemized like this. This type of approach is shortsighted at best, lacking the critical principles of escalation and de-escalation, both of which rely on the practitioners deeper understanding and exposure to reality based training at many more levels than is what is popular in most academies today. Easy to teach techniques make money, but very, very rarely equip a student to survive. From my perspective, the study of true martial arts has nothing to do with sport. It even has little to do with neutralizing an enemy combatant in the field of battle. True martial arts has everything to do with developing the skills to remain in control especially under dire circumstances. Of course the skills and proficiencies of my students mature as their time spent training stacks up, but more important is the maturity of their ability to remain in control as anxiety, fear, shock, trauma or loss of life become extremely real within moments. Due to the constant exposure of survive at all costs simulation in the Dojo, my students can become more adapt to these circumstances and quell the physiological changed during escalation. It is about self control. These are the things of battle and being able to demonstrate control under horrible conditions is the hallmark of a warrior. Any brute can cut another down with a blade or bullet, but the warrior will complete the battle before it escalates into chaos. They will survive and if they do not, the legacy they've left will certainly allow those remaining to share a higher standard of living. This is how I've come to know the meaning of martial arts and the ultimate reason we train them in the west. In Japanese, it is known as the Bushido. The arts that I've dedicated much of my life to understanding have remained relatively unchanged since the Warring States Period in Japanese history, yet have adapted in many interesting ways to the times and technology of the present day. We still retain the old protocol and wear the old attire. Our Dojo smells of a myriad of incense, wood walls and sweat. In the winter the Dojo is frigidly cold and in the summer it is like working out inside an oven. Yet still, each day we are able to step our bare feet onto the tatami matted floor of the Dojo and begin to practice in formats shared by previous generations of warriors. The simulation of death and survival occurs over and over again, day after day, year after year. We are dedicated to preserving this tradition and these ways with all that we have while applying the principles of cause and effect found into our modern day routines and relationships. On this episode of the World Famous Sofa King Podcast, we travel back time and look at the first emperor of unified China, Qin Shi Huan. His legacy is one of power, unification, reformation, and madness in the quest for eternal life. He was the one who started construction of the Great Wall of China and fought a massive series of wars to unify the 7 warring states to serve him as emperor. He drank mercury, burned books, killed just about everyone, and left behind the amazing army of terra cotta soldiers. Everything about this guy is controversial, even his birth. One account is that the was the son of a kidnapped prince and a wealthy consort. Another is that he was the son of this consort and a powerful merchant named Lu Buwei who just used the prince to give his unborn son power. Either way, Lu Buwei put this prince in power as king and then after his death, ruled the kingdom until (his son) the prince was old enough to take power. And take power, he did. Qin Shi Huan ruled over a period known as Warring States Period of China. Every single kingdom was conquered by this young king, and he even survived multiple assassination attempts (Fidel Castro’s got nothing on this kid). He completely remade China, killing all previous nobles, murdering scholars who didn’t agree with him. He also build roads, crated a canal that still serves to this day, and unified their language and coinage and culture. But, Qin Shi Huan went a little bit crazy at the end. He became obsessed with living forever, and he demanded scholars and sorcerers bring him potions. They were often made of mercury, which didn’t help things. By the time this amazing man died, he build an army of 8000 terra cotta soldiers to help him conquer heaven just as he did the earth!   Visit Our Sources https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qin_Shi_Huang https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terracotta_Army https://www.thoughtco.com/qin-shi-huang-first-emperor-china-195679 https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/2000-year-old-texts-reveal-first-emperor-chinas-quest-eternal-life-180967671/ https://www.livescience.com/22454-ancient-chinese-tomb-terracotta-warriors.html https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lingqu

Principles to Apply in Protecting the Eco-EnvironmentHumanity and nature are a community of life. There is no substitute for the current eco-environment. When we use it, we take it for granted. But once damaged, it will struggle to recover. “Heaven and earth coexist with me; all things and I are one.”“Heaven and earth do not speak, yet the seasons change and all things grow.”When human beings make rational use of nature and protect it, the rewards of nature are often generous; when human beings rudely exploit and plunder nature, the punishment is bound to be merciless. It is an immutable law that harm caused by human actions to nature will eventually hurt human beings themselves. “All things must be in harmony with nature to grow, and obtain from nature to thrive.”6 There are many vivid examples. One of them is Dujiangyan, a large-scale water conservancy project on the Minjiang River near the city of Chengdu on the Chengdu Plain, in southwest China's Sichuan Province. When it was first built in the Warring States Period more than 2,000 years ago, the flood patterns of the Minjiang River and the topography of the Chengdu Plain were important factors to be considered. The project is still in use today – it has benefited generations of local residents. In the whole process of economic development, we must adhere to the principle of giving priority to conservation, protection, and the restoration of nature. We should not think about taking from nature with out giving back, developing without protecting, and consuming without restoring. We should protect the eco-environment as we protect our eyes, and cherish it as we cherish our own lives. We should lay the groundwork for long-term benefits, take concrete steps to protect nature, restore the ecosystems, and create a beautiful environment. We should make it possible for people to enjoy the natural landscape and retain their love of nature, while returning serenity, harmony and beauty back to nature.

Many peripatetic politicians traveled around to sell their propositions to princes and lords. The Eastern Zhou Dynasty began with the Spring and Autumn Period and ended with the Warring States Period. In the Spring and Autumn Period, there were "Five Chieftains", and in the Warring States Period, there were "Seven Martial States". ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to leave a message, thought, suggestion, feedback to me. 如果你对内容有任何问题,想法,建议,都可以留言给我 https://open.firstory.me/story/ck9v7bjsoqivi0873td4ux1gc?m=comment It would be a big help if you kindly support my channel with a cup of coffee 欢迎买杯咖杯赞助我的频道,你的小小支持是我的大大帮助 ☕ https://pay.firstory.me/user/taiwanaccent Powered by Firstory Hosting

Reflections on nature in martial arts, the lost secret

The Onin War tore Japan apart, but also kicked off the Sengoku Jidai or Warring States Period that's a seminal part of Japanese history. The power of the shogun dissolved and regional clan leaders or daimyo fought for control of the country. In the mid 16th century, near Kyoto, a clan called the Matsudaira found itself pinched between two great rivals: the Oda and the Imagawa. Abducted as a hostage by the Oda, the scion of the Matsudaira clan (the young Tokugawa Ieyasu) grew up to fight alongside of the Imagawa when he was released. Their combined forces threatened to destroy the entire Oda clan, but Oda Nobunaga had a different idea. They clashed at the Battle of Okehazama. The local people, knowing him to be a good man, decided to throw food into the river to feed the fishes to prevent them from eating Qu's body. They also sat on dragon boats, and tried to scare the fishes away by the thundering sound of drums aboard the boat and the fierce looking dragon-head in the front of the boat.4.Today, people eat zongzi (the food originally intended to feed the fishes) and race dragon boats in memory of Qu's dramatic death.Zong zi is a pyramid-shaped dumpling made of glutinous rice wrapped with bamboo leaves Northern zongzi is sweet which is filled with red dates or sweet been pasteSouthern zongzi is filled with meat, seafood or egg yolk

Advanced by the Qin statesman Shang Yang and later blended together by Han Fei, the three main aspects of Legalism were the firm implementation of laws, use of techniques such as responsibility and inscrutability, and taking advantage of the ruler's position. The Han dynasty that replaced the Qin discredited this philosophy for its apparent authoritarianism, but its influence continued, re-emerging throughout Chinese history. This is NEWS Plus Special English. I'm Mark Griffiths in Beijing. Here is the news. China will launch a number of major projects to restructure its energy layout in order to achieve a greener development with cleaner energy. Premier Li Keqiang says China will push forward reform in energy production and consumption, and make energy use greener. He made this remark recently at a meeting of the incumbent National Energy Commission. Li said China will embark on new nuclear power plants equipped with state-of-the-art safety measures on the eastern coast at a proper time. Other projects will mainly include construction of hydropower stations, wind and solar power stations, and ultra-high-voltage transmission lines to send power from the west to the east of the country. China has seen rapid nuclear power growth in recent years, but became cautious about the development of new nuke programs after Japan's Fukushima nuclear fallout in 2011. To make energy greener, China will try to boost the development of electric cars and upgrade coal burning power generators that fail to meet emission cut requirements. Premier Li says China will wage a war against air pollution and smog, and step up ecological protection measures by further saving energy and cutting emissions. This is NEWS Plus Special English. About one third of Beijing's PM 2.5 is from neighboring cities. The Environmental Protection Bureau of Beijing says around 30 percent of the air pollutants in the capital are from nearby cities. Motor vehicles, coal burning, industrial production and dust are major resources for Beijing's PM 2.5 pollution. Other pollutants come from cooking, livestock and paint. PM 2.5 is fine particles measuring less than 2.5 microns in diameter that causes hazardous smog. The Beijing Municipal Environmental Monitoring Center says vehicle emissions are the major pollutant responsible. Pollutants discharged by cars worsen air quality after mixing with dust. The Beijing municipal government has pledged to reduce PM 2.5 density by 25 percent in the next three years. You are listening to NEWS Plus Special English. I'm Mark Griffiths in Beijing. The United Nations has celebrated its Chinese Language Day with a series of special activities to highlight the historical and cultural importance of Chinese. The UN Chinese Language Day was established by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO, in 2010 to celebrate multilingualism and cultural diversity. It also aims to promote equal use of all six of its official working languages throughout the organization. Dozens of UN staff members and diplomats from different countries gathered in the UN headquarters to enjoy a host of events. As part of the celebration, an exhibition of Chinese calligraphy and paintings was held at the UN headquarters in New York. The Chinese Language Day is observed annually on April 20, roughly corresponding to the day of Guyu in the lunar calendar. Ancient people celebrated Guyu to honor Cangjie, a legendary figure who invented the Chinese characters. The Chinese language is one of the six official languages of the United Nations, along with English, French, Spanish, Russian and Arabic. More than 1 billion people speak Chinese, which means one in every seven people around the world communicates using Chinese. This is NEWS Plus Special English. Archaeologists have discovered new sections of the Great Wall in northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. The 20-meter long wall was found in a valley in Zhongwei City. It is believed to be part of the Great Wall built during the Qin Dynasty more than 2,000 years ago. The wall consists of three sections, one of which was built entirely with stones. The stone section is five meters long, four meters wide and six meters tall. The other two sections are 10 and 5 meters long respectively. The remains are believed to have a history of around 2,500 years. During the Warring States Period more than 2,200 years ago, the state of Qin defeated other powers and established the Qin Dynasty. To prevent foreign invaders from crossing the Yellow River when it was frozen in winter, the First Emperor of the Qin Dynasty, Qin Shi Huang, built the Great Wall along the Yellow River Valley. The Great Wall in China was listed as a world cultural heritage site by UNESCO in 1987. This is NEWS Plus Special English. A General Conference of the World Fellowship of Buddhists will be held in northwest China's Shaanxi Province in October. The event is set for October 16 to 18 in the city of Baoji. The World Fellowship of Buddhists is an international organization headquartered in Bangkok. It's the first time the organization has decided to hold its general conference in China. The conference is expected to attract around 400 representatives from dozens of countries and regions across the world, as well as another 400 observers. The vice mayor of Baoji Zhang Jing-yuan said preparations have begun; and the conference will help Chinese Buddhists strengthen ties with Buddhists from other parts of the world. Founded in Sri Lanka in 1950, the World Fellowship of Buddhists is aimed at promoting the teachings of the Buddha. It also organizes all sorts of humanitarian activities.
