Welcome in for another edition of the Morning Espresso from the SDH Network, brought to you by Oglethorpe University, Atlanta's premier undergraduate learning experience and soccer powerhouse.Lionel Messi came off the bench last night in Kingston to help Inter Miami advance in the Concacaf Champions Cup, defeating Cavalier FC 2-0 on the night and 4-0 on aggregate. He scored late to seal the match after Luis Suarez converted from the penalty spot in the first half. Miami will face LAFC in the quarterfinals of the competition. Club America will battle Cruz Azul 3 times in 12 days in April as they'll meet in an all-Liga MX quarterfinal. Vancouver will play Pumas and the LA Galaxy will play Tigres. New season for the NWSL kicks off tonight as they continue their growth that has been remarkable over the past 5 years. My questions going into the 2025 season are: can Orlando win another trophy with Marta & Barbra Banda leading the attack, is Washington the most fun team in the league to watch when Croix Bethune & Trinity Rodman get healthy, can the reigning MVP Temwa Chawinga lead the Kansas City Current to a trophy this season, and can Ally Sentnor continue her scintillating form from the USWNT into the league season?UEFA released frame-by-frame photos of Julian Alvarez's penalty double touch that showed "minimal" (the air quotes are important here) contact with his plant foot. I disagree with the conversation about allowing an accidental double touch to stand, just allow the attempt to be retaken, the same as when goalkeepers come off their line early. US Men's Beach Soccer National team reached the semifinals of the Concacaf Championship, they'll face El Salvador with a spot at the World Cup on the line. 3 big games this weekend for you to keep an eye on: Atleti hosts Barcelona with one point separating them in La Liga on Sunday, the Carabao Cup final between Liverpool and Newcastle on Sunday, and Saturday's Women's League Cup Final between Chelsea and Manchester City. Refresh your latest content from the SDH Network and our friends at 92.9 The Game on the Off The Woodwork podcast. Some great pieces of audio that you might have missed over the last few days.
Amy Walsh joins the show to talk about the women's professional player pathway in Canada ahead of the inaugural season of the Northern Super League, Jesse Marsch urges the acceleration of player development for the men's national team and touches on the role the Canadian Premier League can play, and Andrew Olivieri looks ahead to the men's U-20 national team's Concacaf Championship adventure
Back on the audio network with a recap of yesterday's CanChamp semi-final against TFC! Today, Mackenzie discusses key moments from the match, how Forge should carry their momentum into the CPL regular season and an exciting announcement from Canada soccer. We hear from Alessandro Hojabrpour, Malik Owolabi-Belewu, and Khadim Kane. Key Takeaways:Malik had been given the opportunity to play at right back against Chivas so he had a basic understanding of the positioning after being put there with Daniel's absence.Despite a solid win against another MLS opponent, both Ale & Malik agree it was disappointing to concede in the manner in which they did given the significance of away goals.Coach Bobby emphasized that it is important for the sport to have players like Benni Badibanga to uphold the creativity and flare within it!Canada Soccer announced today that Forge Fc's Khadim Kane has been selected to join the 21-player roster for the upcoming 2024 U-20 Concacaf Championship in Mexico.Pacific is currently 4th in the standings, just one point ahead of Forge. Today's midweek episode of Forge Daily is jam packed! Today, Mackenzie gets into the details of Forge FC's national team call ups, updates to the CPL standings and the status of Nana & Cisse. We hear from Dav Choinere & Chris Kalongo on the transition from their Cavalry loss to a bounce back opportunity against Halifax.Key Takeaways:Current standings don't necessarily predict game outcomes, as illustrated by the recent draw between first-place Atletico Ottawa and last-place Halifax Wanderers.Atletico Ottawa leads with 21 points and remains undefeated, while Vancouver FC moves to 2nd with 14 points after a draw with York United. Forge and Pacific FC are tied for 3rd, Cavalry FC is 5th, and the Wanderers are 8th with only 3 points but have a game in hand.Forge's Garven Metusala has returned from Haiti after winning two World Cup qualifiers, and Khadim Kane has earned his first call-up to Canada's U-20 team for international friendlies in Chile, preparing for the 2024 U-20 Concacaf Championship.Forge does not take Halifax lightly despite their low standing ranking.Nana Opoku Ampomah, one of two international players, has finally arrived and will be featured in an interview on Mac's Access tomorrow. On Friday, CPL commentator Adam Jenkins will join to discuss his insights on the league, Forge FC's season start, and expectations for the Halifax Wanderers.Dav Choinere didn't know it was father's day this weekend..Chapters:1:15 National Team Call Ups2:16 CPL Standing Update3:43 Cavalry Thoughts5:43 Offensive vs Defensive performances7:03 Team Confidence & Halifax matchup8:25 Nana Opoku Ampomah is here!9:29 Fathers Day PlansForge Audio NetworkThe Forge Audio Network provides Forge FC fans with the most comprehensive, entertaining and informative news and information about their favourite soccer team. In Commerce City, CO last week, Portland Thorns FC forward Sophie Smith made it two goals in a row, six minutes apart, assisted by Rose Lavelle, in the first of the two friendly games against Colombia. These were followed by San Diego Wave FC midfielder Taylor Kornieck scoring in her debut game with the perfect header off Megan Rapinoe's serve. It was a tepid first half for the US even against a weak opposition but clearly words were spoken in the locker room for the US to come out with renewed focus and precision in their attacking line. The second game in Utah saw a veteran starting line-up and it was seasoned Washington Spirit defender Kelley O'Hara who slammed one in the back of the net in the 77th minute to add to an own goal in. the first half, which gave the US a 2-0 win. Shout out to North Carolina Courage defender Carson Pickett who is the first ever player with a limb difference to earn a USWNT cap. The 28 year old from South Carolina was born without a left forearm and hand. The squad now head to the 2022 CONCACAF Championship in Mexico for the 2023 World Cup and 2024 Paris Olympic Games qualifying games, which begin on July 4 against Haiti followed by Jamaica on the 7th and Mexico on the 11th. Rod has coached with Portland Timbers (MLS) and head coaching roles with Cleveland City (USL), North East Stars (Jamaica), Mount Aureol (Sierra Leone), Montego Bay FC (Jamaica) where he led his team to CONCACAF Championship qualification, and most recently with Stumptown AC (NISA) in Charlotte

Paxton Pomykal was a standout performer for the U.S. U20s at the Concacaf Championship, and the creative central midfielder has come out swinging in 2019 for FC Dallas. He's started 3 of 4 games for one of the better teams (so far) in the western conference of MLS, and he's drawn attention on both sides of the Atlantic as a midfield orchestrator and disruptor in the press. He joined the podcast to talk about what's driven his success over the past 6 months, advice he received from U.S. U20 coach Tab Ramos, his role in Dallas under Luchi Gonzalez and the U20 World Cup in May.

Then we discuss the U.S. U20 roster for the Concacaf Championship, and then, best of all, Atlanta United 2 Coach Scott Donnelly joins to talk about coaching in USL, George Bello, Andrew Carleton, and USL as a place for young players to develop. After what seemed like a terribly long international break, the Premier League returns and the title race grows tighter. We recap the highlight matches of the weekend like Chelsea's late draw versus United, Cardiff's first win of the season against a continuously disappointing Fulham, and Arsenal's victory over Leicester gives them their 10th straight win of the season. We also preview the big Champion's League matches this week, make some scoreline predictions, chat Henry's first CL match in charge of Monaco, and talk about the US youngsters that will be making an impact in some of the CL matches. Also discussed is the US Women's National Team who just defeated Canada 2-0 to win the 2018 CONCACAF Championship and easily clinch a spot in the 2019 Women's World Cup taking place in France. Also mentioned is the terrible death and murder of influential Mexican women's soccer coach Mar Ibarra. We wrap up with a This or That featuring Vince Staples, Chips and Salsa, Lo Mein, and more.

The Lions were back in action this weekend and so obviously the Lions were not winning or scoring goals again on Saturday. The latest shutout came at the hands of FC Dallas, a team that has never given up a goal to Orlando City. That trend continued with a 2-0 loss Saturday night and we’re here to talk (briefly) about it and give you our Man of the Match. We also look ahead to the rematch in Foxborough against the New England Revolution. The teams drew 3-3 in Orlando but that’s back when the Lions remembered how to put the ball in the net. But still, we’ll be a little optimistic and try to give you our key match-ups and score predictions. We discuss the recent Orlando Pride roster announcement, and talk about which players the team should try hardest to re-sign this off-season, and the important pieces that the club is bringing back by exercising their contract options. We also talked about the USWNT’s ongoing domination of the Concacaf Championship so far, as the Yanks are nearing qualification for the 2019 World Cup, but there’s still some work to do. Finally, we had a light, but fun, mailbag. If there’s something you want us to address on our next show, just ask by tweeting it to us @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. Here’s how show No. 145 fell: 0:12 - The Lions still aren’t scoring or winning and we’re kind of fed up at this point. But we talk about it anyway. 15:10 - Key match-ups and predictions for OCSC at New England and maybe there will be a goal for Orlando but probably not. 22:28 - The USWNT has been on fire and even a phenomenal night from Panama’s teenage goalkeeper could only keep the goal deficit to five. 34:11 - Our mailbag is small this week, but awesome, as always. Getting ready for a busy weekend around the American soccer-sphere. Doug Roberson of the AJC will join us to preview the New England Revolution's visit to the Benz. We'll talk about the weekend schedule in MLS. We'll recap the USWNT's 6-0 win in the Concacaf Championship last night. Tweet your thoughts (create your own hashtag) at @SoccerDownHere.
We had a relaxing weekend for a change with no Orlando City match to cause us stress, but that’s about to change. The Lions are heading into Big D to take on FC Dallas. You’ll get our key match-ups and score predictions, plus our conversation with Ben Lyon of SB Nation’s Dallas blog, Big D Soccer. We discuss the recent Orlando Pride roster announcement, and talk about which players the team should try hardest to re-sign this off-season, and the important pieces that the club is bringing back by exercising their contract options. A super-sized mailbag featured mostly soccer questions but there were a couple that went in other directions. We also discussed the USWNT’s upcoming Concacaf Championship run as the Yanks try to qualify for the 2019 World Cup. If there’s something you want us to address on our next show, just ask by tweeting it to us @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. Here’s how show No. 144 went: 0:12 - The Lions haven’t scored a goal in three games and have never scored a goal against FC Dallas. Can you guess what we predicted would happen? 24:54 - Ben Lyon jumps on with us to give us the Dallas perspective and once again an opposing team’s blogger talks about Orlando City’s talent. 49:30 - Lots of mail, the USWNT, and the USMNT fills up our final segment. Dave will be seeing Venom before I will, no doubt. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
