In this episode of Hagley History Hangout Roger Horowitz sits down with Alex Taylor to discuss his new book, Forms of Persuasion: Art and Corporate Image in the 1960s, the first dedicated history of corporate patronage in post-war art. Taylor's book considers how a wide range of artists were deeply immersed in the marketing strategies of big business during the 1960s and explored with multinational corporations new ways to use art for commercial gain. From Andy Warhol's work for packaged goods manufacturers to Richard Serra's involvement with the steel industry, Taylor demonstrates how major artists of the period provided brands with “forms of persuasion” that bolstered corporate power, prestige, and profit. Drawing on extensive original research conducted in artist, gallery, and corporate archives, Taylor recovers a flourishing field of promotional initiatives that saw artists, advertising creatives, and executives working around the same tables. Alex J. Taylor is associate professor of art and visual culture at the University of Pittsburgh. This week on the podcast Michelle and CL link up in person for the first time to recap Michelle's experience at Dallas Digital Summit, how companies can validate their diversity, and recent headlines in the 'Great Resignation'. Fresh from her trip to Dallas Digital Summit, Michelle recounts some of the highlights at the conference. As an observer, she noticed there were several opportunities for people may want to present. In recent months, many corporations have found themselves turning a corner when it comes to diversity. Two of the companies in particular Papa John's and Tommy Hilfiger have made big changes in the way they have presented their image. Papa John's has gone all-in on Shaquille O'Neal as the face of the pizza brand. It's a move to show that not everyone at the company thinks like the founder and former chairman John Schnatter. In the late '90s, an internet rumor was started about Tommy Hilfiger making racist remarks via email and on an Oprah show caused enough a strain to the relationship the brand had with the black community. As more information was able to be verified by the company, they also are putting in work with their Fashion Frontier Challenge. The recent set of winners are as diverse it could be with causes that are bigger than just being the flyest thing on the rack. As someone who is known for her knowledge about diversity in the workplace, Michelle shares how corporations can validate the work they are doing to sustain trust with the community. Then she gives a framework that makes can help your company have a healthy and inviting environment for current and prospective employees. We end by looking at a recent Insider article that highlights the struggles people of color are experiencing having during the great resignation. Everyone is not as fortunate to stand against less than perfect work conditions or mentally draining environments. People still have bills and kids and it's harder for some. We reflect on being fortunate to be planning for times like this and even waiting for the right opportunity. Everyone wants to quit but it's never a good time. In this episode, Dave and Jamison answer these questions: I’m a hiring manager and sometimes have to say no to candidates who interview with us. How do I reject them kindly? In my current company, they only care about reputation of the company. They don’t care about their employees or values, they prefer to invest in other things. One time the CEO asked everyone in the company to create fake accounts in order to vote for the company for an Award. By the way, we received the award. But I don’t know how to feel about this company non-existing values.

Pursuant to the Supreme Court's decision in Citizens United v. FEC (2010), corporations have a new ability to spend money in American elections. But is it a good idea for public facing or publicly traded firms to spend in politics? In a forthcoming law review article, “Shooting Your Brand in the Foot: What Citizens United Invites” Associate Professor of Law Ciara Torres-Spelliscy argues that corporate political spending could harm a firm's brand and expose the firm to reputational risks. The American electorate is increasingly polarized. Technologists have created smart phone applications to empower consumers to know more about a firm's political spending history. Thus a politically polarized electorate may bring their partisanship to the shopping mall or to the stock market and take it out on firms that support the opposing political party.

On February 2 a long-awaited report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was released citing ”unequivocal” proof of global warming. Meanwhile some of the biggest corporations in the world including Wal-Mart Ford General Electric and BP have adopted highly visible ”green” strategies. But what does ”going green” mean for the bottom line? Whether motivated by desire to do what is right or to polish their public image and fend off government regulation companies can profit from environmental initiatives according to Wharton faculty and analysts.
