St. Moses Church
Vocatio: The Invitation to Christ's Church

St. Moses Church

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 25, 2024 22:23

This lecture centers on the theme of "missio dei," or the mission of God, which emphasizes the church's calling to engage actively in the world as representatives of Christ. Sam, a pastoral staff member, reflects on the current sermon series titled "Vocatio," exploring concepts such as "creatio dei" (creation of God) and "capax dei" (the capacity for God) in relation to the divine mission entrusted to believers. He opens with contextual prayer, appealing for the Holy Spirit to guide the assembly as they delve into this critical topic. The foundation for today's exploration is the Great Commission from Matthew 28:18-20, where Jesus commands His disciples to make disciples of all nations. Sam emphasizes how traditional interpretations often associate this commission with missionary work in distant lands, but he seeks to broaden this understanding. He asserts that every follower of Jesus is also called to be a "sent one," commissioned to live out their faith in various contexts—at home, in the workplace, and within their neighborhoods.Sam references Leslie Newbigin, a prominent British bishop and advocate for the missional church movement, which encourages believers to understand their lives as part of God's redemptive work. He underlines the importance of being adaptable and open to God's calling, echoing the sentiment that the purpose of the church is inherently missional. Drawing on quotes from various theologians, he reinforces the message that followers of Jesus are invited to engage with God's mission by addressing the needs of the community and participating in acts of service. To illustrate practical applications of this mission, Sam shares insights from Dan Wilkinson, the executive director of World Relief Baltimore. Dan discusses the significant role of the church in supporting immigrants and refugees, emphasizing the biblical command to love one's neighbor. His work highlights the tangible impact of the church through initiatives that help settle new arrivals in the community, showcasing how these collaborative efforts embody the Great Commission in action. The dialogue continues with contributions from Megan Bailey, a Young Life leader in Baltimore County. She details her mission of connecting college students with Jesus through relationship-building and outreach efforts. Megan elaborates on creative ways to foster connections with young people and engage them in meaningful discussions about faith, illustrating a vital aspect of Christ's church: the call to shepherd the next generation.Sam continues to unfold the manifold ways in which St. Moses is actively partnering with local organizations, such as Barclay Elementary and various community outreach programs. He encourages congregants to participate in these initiatives, fostering an environment where church members can collectively meet the needs of their community and discover their unique contributions to the mission.Throughout the talk, a recurring theme emerges: the importance of collective action within the church. Sam urges participants to see themselves not merely as individual agents of change but as a cohesive body unified in purpose, leveraging God's resources to meet the myriad needs present in their communities. He concludes with an invitation for all congregants to reflect on their personal calling within the mission of Christ's church, encouraging them to open their hearts to God's guidance as they embark on this journey of faith together.Sam closes with a prayer, again invoking the Holy Spirit's guidance, and reiterates the hopeful message of renewal and reconciliation that defines the church's mission. He underscores the call to be involved actively, inviting attendees to consider how they might respond to the Great Commission in their everyday lives, thus highlighting the vibrancy and accessibility of this divine calling.

Today's episode makes an argument that villains in slice of life manga could be better than Shounen manga villains, and how high school toilets can be quite trepidatious! Skip the plot summary @ 4:36 and feel free to join in on the conversation by emailing to WeAppreciateManga@Gmail.com   082 – I'll Give It My All… Tomorrow vol. 4 Chapters 17 to 22, '19 Years Younger' and ‘Midlife Crisis' with bonus chapter ‘All about Aya Unami' By Shunju Aono Translation by Akemi Wegmuller Lettering by Steven Ryhse   Struggling Manga artist Shizuo Oguro gets a new editor, Aya Unami, she proves to be critical of Shizuo to the point that she is able to send him in a slump. Shizuo even gets a neck hernia due to the stress of dealing with her. However, Unami isn't just critical of Shizuo but she has also lost respect for her father too. For years her father has failed to write a bestselling novel as her mother is forced to be the breadwinner of the household. But things turn around for the better when Shizuo meets his childhood friend, Osamu Miyata, who opened a bakery to be closer to his own son. He reminds Shizuo of the promise that was made, many years ago, reminding Shizuo that he should become the father that his daughter would be proud of. This gives Shizuo enough energy not to quit making manga. Not long afterwards Miyata gets a visit from his ex-wife, claiming that she is to be married once again but this time she is taking herself and her son to live in America with her new husband. She asks Miyata to end his relationship with their son. Miyata becomes hopeless and devastated, and shows no will to fight her on this matter. Meanwhile Unami's father dies of a heart attack, he dies at his desk with a pen in his hand, Unami never spoke to her father in his last days but she realizes why she resented him. It was because Aya Unami was her father's number one fan. She hated her father for not giving her stories to read and now she cries knowing he will never have anything for her to read. Days pass by and Shizuo burns his rejected manuscripts. His meetings with Unami are seemingly non-existent until both Unami and Shizuo run in to each other on the street. Shizuo pleads for Unami's help. And Unami, reminded of her dead father, agrees to help him.   Topics: The Akira Nakanishi character looks a lot like the main character of ‘Angel Densetsu', Seiichiro Kitano. For more information on this great OVA you can't go wrong than by starting at Anime News Network. The Antagonists Aya Unami and Miyata's ex-wife. And how most antagonists in slice of life manga compare to the one's in Shonen manga. The trepidation of being inside a High School toilet. James compares Shunju Aono's illustration style to that of the BBC Cartoon ‘Monkey Dust', although the show itself was a series of sketches that used a variety of cartoon styles and studios, it shows a crudeness that is most common in independently funded and cult works. Dan Wilkinson of Vice also made a retrospective piece on the show.   Other references: Shizuo's classmate Eriko Osaki reads ‘The Setting Sun' by Osamu Dazai. Shizuo's Shirts: Semi-pro, Italy, Empty, Mie, New and Max. In the chapter ‘Aiko Comes to H burgers' Shizuo offers her Kinako shakes, Kinako itself is a protein powder made from roasted and grounded soybeans. To find out more about Kinako and the many varieties that exist of it just go here. Aiko is a Japanese singer/songwriter, the bonus “omake” chapter Aiko Comes to H Burgers' was created for her tour pamphlet, specifically ‘Love Like Pop Vol. 12'. Do you think Shunju Aono captured her likeness very well?

You can have and take everything away from you that is important to you. And you can sit back and be quiet about it because you're scared. You're scared that you're going to be labeled something or you could stand up and you could fight against this woke mob. And you can take this country back and you can take the things back that are important to this country." - Jim Larking "Woke mob is a nightmare for anybody that they decide to go after. They will chew you up and spit you out." - Dan Wilkinson "Conservatives are afraid to speak out against the left because they're going to be labeled a racist. They're going to be labeled an extremist. And as soon as the woke mob gets a hold of that, they're going to attack you. They're going to attack your job. They're going to attack your livelihood. They're going to attack your family and they're going to try to cancel everything that you're ever been or ever worked for." - Jim Larking "I look into a lot of conspiracies and I don't always think that they're true. But I do realize the basis behind them and you'd be surprised at how much stuff is out there that has potential." - Jeff "Anything that you see come across the news is optics, it's predictive programming. The E.Jones Show Feat Sharonda Podcast

Roxanne Shanté is a hip-hop pioneer, becoming the first female rapper to have a hit single. Known for her razor-sharp disses, she started the Roxanne Wars in the mid 80s and was the only female member of the hip-hop collective, the Juice Crew.SynopsisWith her distinctive raspy-squeaky voice and fearless gloves-up delivery, Roxanne Shanté cut an idiosyncratic dash through the male-dominated world of 1980s hip hop. She was first female rapper to have a record — and sparked the first ever hip-hop beef, the Roxanne Wars. Shanté courted controversy in 2009, when her claim to possess an undergraduate degree and a PhD was disputed by the Slate writer Ben Scheffner. But she could never be accused of being boring, or having nothing to say — hence the eagerly awaited biopic of her life and music, Roxanne Roxanne, produced by Pharrell Williams and Forest Whitaker, which premiered in January 2017 at the Sundance Film Festival.Kid Battle Rapper from the ProjectsThe First Lady of Rap was born Lolita Shanté Gooden on November 9, 1969, and raised in the Queensbridge Projects — the largest public-housing development in north America and one of the epicenters of hip-hop culture. Shanté told the website Jezebel.com that her mom entered her in a local rap battle when she was just 10 years old — and Shanté won $50. "It just grew from there," she said. "I was already a great little battle rapper." Soon she was taking on all-comers on street corners — wiping the floor with older teenage boys from across the projects. In 1984 when Shanté was 15, her neighbor Marlon Williams — aka producer Marley Marl — asked her to rhyme over a track he was making using the beats from an early hip-hop record, Roxanne Roxanne by U.T.F.O. The eponymous Roxanne in the song was dissed by U.T.F.O. for spurning their advances, so Lolita Shanté Gooden rechristened herself Roxanne Shanté — and fired off a profanity-laden rhyme from the girl's point of view that mocked U.T.F.O. as lecherous losers. The track caused a sensation on the radio, and when Marl recorded it with a new beat (to avoid legal issues) and released it as "Roxanne's Revenge," it sold 250,000 copies in New York alone.Beat Diss: the Roxanne Wars"Roxanne's Revenge" sparked a tranche of response records — estimates range from 30 to 100. In today's terms, Roxanne became a meme. U.T.F.O. went as far as enlisting a female rap character of their own — The Real Roxanne, voiced first by the rapper Elease Jack, and later by Adelaida Martinez — to embark on a series of brutal tit-for-tat diss records with Shanté. Meanwhile Ralph Rolle called Shanté's gender into question on "Roxanne's A Man;" The Potato Chips contributed "Roxanne's Real Fat;" there was even a release by Gigolo Tony and Lace Lacey, purporting to be "The Parents of Roxanne."During this time Shanté became a mother at 15 to her son, Kareem, but still found the wherewithal to fire off combative replies, including 1985's "Bite This," on which she baited Run DMC and LL Cool J. "The boldness was startling," noted the journalist Dan Wilkinson on Redbull.com.Roxanne vs KRS OneAs the only female member of Marley Marl's Juice Crew, Shanté was soon embroiled in another legendary hip hop beef — the Bridge Wars, between Queensbridge and the South Bronx, whose talisman, KRS-One of Boogie Down Productions, she dissed on "Have a Nice Day" in 1987 with "Now KRS One, you should go on vacation/With that name sounding like a wack radio station." KRS-One responded directly in rather more vulgar fashion on "The Bridge Is Over" the same year.Shanté Releases Two Albums, Then Retires at 25Shanté toured extensively through the second half of the 1980s, releasing a string of singles including, notably, "Go on Girl" in 1988, "Independent Woman" in 1990 and "Big Mama" in 1992 — on which she called out other female rappers including Queen Latifah, MC Lyte and Monie Love. Solocast!    Who am I? I have lived in 5 different countries and 10 different cities. I have blonde hair, a ginger beard, have lived a life and career of so many lifetimes… all focused on the pursuit of loving life and The Secret to Happiness… although I didn’t necessarily recognise it at the time.   After dropping out of university and a Swinburne University BASc Biochemistry degree through lack of passion and zero desire to be stuck in a laboratory in 10-15 years time, I have served drinks and cleaned ashtrays back of house at Melbourne’s Crown Casino, spent 6.5 years jet-setting the globe with the rock star’s lifestyle without being the rock star as an Emirates Airline flight attendant, set a life up for myself as music industry professional, driving operations & logistics for music festivals/events around Australia such as Splendour In The Grass, event production and festival photography for triple j, created a music supervisor role for Ballistyx Snowboard Show on Channel GO! managed rock & roll bands and much, much more.     My life now, is so surreal. My main crust in 2017 is as a social media strategist and content producer. I work in an industry that didn’t exist 15 years ago guiding national and global brands on their social media strategy in the digital sphere, including the likes of Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate, Peroni Italian Beer, Philadelphia Cream Cheese, Kraft Peanut Butter, Bulmers Original Cider, Miller Genuine Draft, Cancer Council Australia, Salesforce (through Mahlab Content Agency) and many more.    And all of this from a guy with no degree who dropped out of university… not once, but twice! The 1st was the BASc and the 2nd a Masters of Entrepreneurship & Innovation, which I dropped out of as I was spread too thin and didn’t wish to wait 4 years to start chasing new opportunities… I’m still not convinced you can teach entrepreneurship, but that’s another story
