While he now lives in Lyons, he still keeps Nederland close to his heart and calls the town the source of his musical roots. From the band's formation in 2006 to its primary dissolution in 2018, Rodriguez served as the guitar and banjo player of Elephant Revival. He was also one of the founders and key songwriters of the group.Once the band dissolved, however, he decided to focus on a solo career, releasing his debut EP Your Heart, The Stars, The Milky Way in 2019. He has since released two full-length albums, Sojourn of a Burning Sun in 2020 and Vast Nothing in 2023. He even collaborated with The Lumineers as a writer and featured vocalist on the 2021 single “This Is Life (Merry Christmas).”He's also gotten his own band together. Performing with musicians in Lyons, he made connections and developed a band from there. Currently, his band, simply known as The Daniel Rodriguez Band, consists of himself, Zach Jackson on bass, Kevin Matthews on drums, and Justin Mazer on guitar.Rodriguez has collaborated with many incredible musicians over his entire career. These include local musicians like Benny “Burle” Galloway, who's written songs performed by groups such as Yonder Mountain String Band, The Infamous Stringdusters, and Greensky Bluegrass, and Eric Thorin, a two-time Grammy nominee for his contributions to the albums Calling You From My Mountain by the Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band and Man on Fire by Danny Barnes. For a few years, he even roomed with Sally Van Meter, who played on the 1994 Grammy-winning album The Great Dobro Sessions and recorded with Jerry Garcia for the album The Songs of Jimmie Rodgers: A Tribute, in what would be Garcia's final recording session before he died in 1995. Danny and I met at the Salvos maybe 20 years ago and bumped into each other recently at a mutual friends memorial service. Danny's life story is peppered with hardship and tragedy, but also with determination and some good people who have loved and supported him. He has over 1000 sky dives to his name, but a brush with death at the salvos helping put up Christmas lights gave him more of a buzz that any of that!

According to Stathead's data, last night's home run by Mark Vientos off Aroldis Chapman was the 98th time in Mets history that they've gotten a solo shot with two outs in the ninth inning, and the third time this season. It's the second time this season that a rookie has saved the Mets from being shut out this way, as Francisco Álvarez also did it on July 5 in Arizona. The difference there was that the Mets were only down 1-0, so it was a game-tying home run — one of 13 out of these 98 when the Mets were one swing of the bat from getting even, and got even with the one swing of the bat.The Mets went on to win that game on Mark Canha's triple to score Brett Baty later in the ninth, and a 1-2-3 bottom of the frame by David Robertson. They did not win the other game when they got a solo shot with their last gasp, as Eduardo Escobar only got the Mets within 9-8 against Atlanta on May 1, the final score of that one.The most recent walkoff on a two-out solo shot by a Met was nearly five years ago, September 13, 2018, as Todd Frazier ended the first game of a doubleheader moments after Michael Conforto had also homered off Kyle Barraclough for one of those 13 game-tying solo shots. There have been 58 of these homers when the Mets have been behind in a game, including Vientos last night. His dinger followed Escobar into a more exclusive club, the 24th solo home run in Mets history when down to their final out at home.Only three of those have been tying homers: Conforto in 2018, Jerry Buchek off Atlanta's Dick Kelley in 1967, and Gus Bell in the fifth game in Mets history, off Jim Golden of the Houston Colt .45s at the Polo Grounds. Herb Moford gave up a three-run homer to Don Buddin in the 11th inning and the Mets would need to wait another six days to get their first-ever win.Vientos' homer saving the Mets from being blanked at home puts him in a club that only started in 1976, when Ron Hodges went deep off Pittsburgh's Doc Medich, followed like last night by the final out of a 2-1 game. On August 27, 1985, Darryl Strawberry ended Jerry Reuss' bid for a complete game shutout, but Tom Niedenfuer came out of the Dodgers bullpen to strike out George Foster and notch another 2-1 verdict. The disappointment was not as stark, nor as important, the following September 8, when Strawberry denied Bob Sebra a shutout at Shea. Sebra got the complete game win, and did shut out the Mets three weeks later in Montreal, on just two hits — a Gary Carter double in the second, and an infield hit by Lenny Dykstra in the sixth. There was even less drama on October 2, 2001, when Jay Payton denied Bronson Arroyo what would've been his first career shutout. He still got his first complete game and a 10-1 win, but had to wait until 2006 to twirl the first of his six career shutouts.Strawberry and Hodges are the only ones there with Vientos in homering to get the Mets one more chance in a game they trailed 2-0. The last time before last night that the Mets broke up a shutout at home this way, it would've taken a lot more chances: Brandon Nimmo got the best of Danny Barnes on May 16, 2018, and Wilmer Flores followed with a double, but Barnes managed to compose himself and get Conforto to ground out and lock down the Blue Jays' 12-1 triumph.Earlier that year, on April 15, Flores tagged Matt Albers of the Brewers for a two-out solo shot that was a walkoff. He also did it on July 22, 2017, off Oakland's Simon Castro. That ties Flores for the team record for a career, but not a single season, because Cleon Jones turned two 1-1 ties into 2-1 wins, just one week apart, in 1971 — August 21 off San Diego's Dave Roberts and August 28 against the Dodgers and Jim Brewer.Other than Flores, Jones, and Frazier, the Mets' walkoffs on solo shots, one out from extra innings, belong to Rusty Staub on May 9, 1982 off San Francisco's Greg Minton, and Mike Cameron off Danny Patterson to beat the Tigers on June 18, 2004.Cameron walked off Patterson and the Tigers the next night, too, delivering the decisive base hit in the 10th inning. Mason Colby was born and raised in the musically rich Gulf Coast, splitting time between Lafayette, Louisiana and Houston, Texas. But it was in Kentucky that he picked up a banjo and started making music in earnest. A founding member of traditional stringband The Jarflies, Mason has been part of the old-time music scene in Kentucky for over a decade and is now writing songs that blend his love of Acadiana, the Bluegrass, and Texas songwriters like Guy Clark, Jolie Holland, Lyle Lovett, and banjo hero Danny Barnes. For his first two EPs of original work, he collaborated with Lexington producer and multi-instrumentalist J. Tom Hnatow (Horse Feathers, These United States, Vandaveer), a natural fit in terms of sound and vision. Other important contributors include Don Rogers (Mason's mentor as part of a Kentucky Arts Council Traditional Arts Apprenticeship grant), Robby Cosenza (Horse Feathers), Montana Hobbs (The Local Honeys), Zach Martin (Lylak), Abby Hamilton, Art Mize (KY Partisans, The Jarflies), and Cecilia Wright (Bear Medicine, Senora May). Rebecca Rego has been a Midwest singer-songwriter, recording artist, and producer for over 15 years. She has written and recorded eight albums and toured the country many times over, solo and with her Chicago-based band The Trainmen. In 2014, a mysterious package arrived on her doorstep. In it was Lucia Berlin's short story collection, “A Manual For Cleaning Women.” The note simply said: “I think you'll love this.” As Rego began picking through the dark, witty, romantic prose, the stories slowly began to seep into her consciousness and affect her songwriting. After a few years, she realized she had created a unique set of songs based on Berlin's book. In the fall of 2019, Rego traveled to Northern California, where a handful of Berlin's stories take place, and recorded six of these songs at Panoramic Studio in Stinson Beach with engineer Beau Sorenson (Death Cab For Cutie, tUnE-yArDs,) backed by multi-instrumentalist J. Tom Hnatow (Horse Feathers, Ringo Starr,) and Alysia Kraft, Staci Foster, and Tobias Bank of Fort Collins, CO based band Whippoorwill. The resulting album “Songs For Cleaning Women Pt. 1” will be released November 11, 2020. The release will be celebrated with a livestreaming performance during Grammy Award-winning music ensemble Eighth Blackbird's “Chicago Artists Workshop” series. As an independent female artist, Rego is influenced by the unflinching, raw honesty found in Berlin's art. Many of Berlin's stories are semi-autobiographical accounts of her time working blue-collar jobs, raising four children as a single mother, and dealing with her own alcoholism. Berlin died in 2004, never receiving critical acclaim in her own lifetime. Rego's goal with this release is to pay homage to Berlin's stories and introduce new audiences to her work. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

To round things out, we'll share an inspiring eChievement Award story about Bill Lavin from New Jersey who started the Where Angels Play Foundation that builds playgrounds in areas of disaster or devastation to honor the victims of tragedy and provide places of hope and community for children and inspire healing.

We have long wanted to showcase the epic Alabama Shakes in our weekly music podcast and here they are! A brilliant choice from Tobin to open the show, let You Ain't Alone blow you into the cosmos with its sublime vocals and musical artistry. Brittany will then bring you back to earth and leave you with tears streaming down your face with the achingly beautiful Joe, live from Austin City Limits. Similarly to our suggestion from Dennis we have a brilliant Listener Suggestion from yesteryear sent in by Eelong. French electro swing gets some well-deserved airplay in this episode as well. Welcome to this episode of the From the Bottom of the Record Box music podcast! Track Listing You Ain't Alone Alabama ShakesGolden Gaze Ian BrownThe Sun is Shining Fleetwood MacNow or Never Now MetricLone Digger Caravan PalaceCrow Black Chicken Bad LiversJoe Alabama Shakes Bad Livers vs. Alabama Shakes This week's Vinyl Selection is from the debut album from Texas bluegrass kings Bad Livers. You can listen to the track taken straight from the vinyl in the track link above. Bad livers came kickin', pluckin' and screamin' into the world in 1990 in Austin Texas, when guitar and banjo virtuoso Danny Barnes came up with this idea that it would be great to have a small-format acoustic band that could play different kinds of music [at a] virtuoso level, where they could play any kind of music. They played regularly in Austin and garnered quite a following, playing weekly at the Saxon Pub. They continued to define their own sound and categorically stated they were not a bluegrass outfit. At this time Barnes remarked about their live sets at the time: We were doing Mississippi John Hurt, gospel tunes, Captain Beefheart—anything, really, but it was Motörhead or the Misfits that caught on. The mid 90's saw them spending most of their time touring and working on side projects including looking for a new record label to record with. As a result, they finally plumped for Sugar Hill Records signing a three record deal. Their later albums, especially Blood and Mood (their final album), failed to engage with their listenership. Sadly by the time the year 2000 rolled in it appeared that Bad Livers were over for good. Such a shame as they were so different and musically gifted to a virtuosic level. This isn't bluegrass and it isn't this or that. It's Bad Liver music. We end up making our own thing That there, that heading is the title of the third studio album from Caravan Palace. I described it on the show as unpronounceable, just a bunch of punctuation. As a result of that, I am determined to discover the meaning of it. Turns out that it is meant to read Robot Face. It does make sense once you know. Interestingly the initial band was founded as a three-piece but further members were needed for live performances. Interestingly these were found via the MySpace website. Continuing to use the internet as a tool the band gained popularity by releasing a number of demos and promo singles online. They enjoyed success on their first tour, in their native France, in 2006/2007. They appeared with this track on Jools Holland's 2016/17 Hootenanny, also performing a cover of Black Betty. However, more famously this track features in one of the live sets performed by Professor Gramophone!

Andrews notes how effectively Borucki was using his slider and dealing with a difficult Boston lineup. However, in the second segment, Andrews has to discuss another blown save by Ryan Tepera. With the Texan's usage rate up, the Nova Scotian Ryan discusses how Tepera's value seems worse because of the high-profile nature of his blowups, and discusses a point Cliff Floyd made about the mentality on the mound affecting Tepera's performance. Andrews concludes with an assessment of where Tepera goes from here, against the likes of Danny Barnes and Justin Shafer. The final third is a mixed bag. Andrews shakes their head at the route Kevin Pillar took in creating Steve Pearce's game-changing triple last night and what that error did to multiple Blue Jays on the field. However, Andrews closes with a happy discussion of the double steal that Devon Travis and Jonathan Davis executed in the sixth and what it means for the Blue Jays to have speed that can be used on the basepaths.Follow the podcast on Twitter @LockedOnJays and follow the host @NeoAC18!Subscribe on Google Play and iTunes! This episode is sponsored by Locked on Fantasy Football 24.7, ZipRecruiter and Locked on College.  Learn more about your ad choices. Danny Barnes became a major player in the evolution of alternative country music when his acoustic trio the Bad Livers broke out of Austin Texas. Danny, Mark Rubin and Ralph White wielded tuba, accordion, fiddle, upright bass and banjo in ways that might have been considered scandalous had they not been so creative, witty and cathartic. They toured with big punk bands and wrote smart, quirky songs. They were able to twist roots and bluegrass music so far by knowing and loving the genres so well. There was never a band like them before or since. After that chapter closed in about 2000, Danny Barnes pursued projects as wide ranging as his taste, always nipping the avant garde, finding a role in American music somewhere between John Hartford and Frank Zappa. He developed the esthetic he calls barnyard electronics, which he says combines various bits of bluegrass, noise, rock, and electronic music. Live, he often performs solo with computer effects and looping equipment. But this year, Barnes took the completely opposite tack when he made and released the first straight ahead, no-frills bluegrass record of his career, Stove Up. Also, the story of The Jimmy Nalls Project.

Greg and Josh break down the last week of news in Blue Jays land. They discuss the resurgent bullpen that is being led by surprising performers Ryan Tepera and Danny Barnes, a tremendous performance by Marco Estrada, the improved hitting from Jose Bautista and Devon Travis, and the constant shuffling of injured players on the Blue Jays roster. They also answer listener questions, give out two Do-Overs, and play Stump the Josh.

Greg and Nick take a look at the Blue Jays week against Kansas City and Tampa Bay where the offense continued to struggle, a sixth man was added to the rotation, as well as Kevin Pillar hitting the DL for the first time in his career. The bullpen continues to swap out parts looking for the right fit, and we try and guess who gets the call in place of Danny Barnes. The listeners provide a couple of deep questions (maybe not intentionally), and we touch on the impending retirement of Tex, A-Rod and Prince.

Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

My guest today is Danny Barnes. Danny is one of the most accomplished and eclectic musicians, songwriters, and wildly creative DIY artists out there. He just won the "Steve Martin prize for Excellence in Bluegrass and Banjo" and is a stellar banjo picker, but his adventurous nature and interest in improvising, new music and electronics really sets him apart. He fronted the genre-bending Austin-based band The Bad Livers before moving to Seattle about 10 years ago. Danny and I talked about his background, how he got into playing music, his history with his band the Bad Livers, Frippertronics, his love of the "Dr. Who" Theme, his epic hangs with John Hartford, and much more... His new album "Get Myself Together (10 Years Later)" is out now and well worth seeking out! This conversation swerved all over the musical spectrum and was extremely insightful for me, and I think it's a revealing look into the mind of a great creative artist.

There is only one musician in the world who can sing the praises of bluegrass legend Don Stover, describe the merits of vintage Sunn amps and tell you that he's working on a suite of 12-tone music for tuba and banjo all in one 20 minute conversation. That man is banjo legend and experimenter Danny Barnes. read more
