Ruth Rakoff had only written one book before, a memoir based on her cancer diagnosis. That was in 2010. Two years later, her brother David Rakoff—an acclaimed writer and storyteller—died of Hodgkin's lymphoma. That traumatic period, in part, inspired her to spend nearly a full decade writing her second book, Untethered, a novel published in Sept. 2023 by Cormorant Books. In Untethered, two siblings branch off into different Jewish worlds, one marrying into an ultra-Orthodox community while the other tries to fend off depression on a kibbutz, eventually reuniting to confront their shared generational trauma during a time of crisis. Rakoff spoke with the hosts of Culturally Jewish to describe her writing process, how her own time in an ultra-Orthodox Israeli community influenced the story, and how its themes resonate even stronger in the wake of Hamas's attack on Israel on Oct. 7. Also in this episode: Ilana recounts the Jewish Futures arts salon in Toronto last week, plus she and David give a rundown of the most exciting Hanukkah events happening in the next couple weeks. Credits Culturally Jewish is hosted by Ilana Zackon and David Sklar. Our producer is Michael Fraiman, and our theme music is by Sarah Segal-Lazar. We're a member of The CJN Podcast Network. It’s possible you’ve been consuming content by Kim France for thirty-ish years, and we’re here to talk about all of it (including her new podcast—which, have you listened?!). Also, not to be the people who talk about our meditation experiences, but we kind of can’t shut up about this one time, ok?   The linkage:   Hit up the Sky Ting yoga classes taught by Marisa Meltzer (in NYC) that we loved.   Check out Kim France’s podcast, which she co-hosts with Tally Abecassis, called Everything Is Fine and her fashion ‘n shopping blog Girls of a Certain Age. Both are ideal for women over 40 and the over-40-curious.   How Sassy Changed My Live, which the very same Marisa Meltzer co-authored with Kara Jesella, is itself iconic at this point.   Kim goes deep on her creative partnership with Andrea Linett while running Lucky in our book Work Wife.   For a preview of the book Kim is writing, read her Medium essays about the beautiful house that didn’t make for a beautiful life and depression at the Condé Nast holiday lunch. Oh, and read her essays on vanity and dressing your age for The Cut while you’re at it.   Speaking of editors in chief, Dan Peres (of Details) just released As Needed for Pain, and this NYT story about that whole late-nineties/early-aughts magazine era is pretty juicy.   Kim shops The RealReal (join the club!), Warm, and Maria Cornejo.   Shout out to the magazine Gossamer, which is for people who also smoke weed.   Two friends we lost much too soon: David Rakoff and Jason Polan.   Bring on that menopause content. See: Darcy Steinke’s book Flash Count Diary, Party Girl, this Broad City scene, and this Fleabag one.    You wanna talk about beauty stuff? Excellent! Kim is very into Drunk Elephant, SK-II Pitera Facial Treatment Masks, Tatcha The Silk Canvas Protective Primer, and Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask. For a red lip, she’s all about Kosas in Royal, Lipstick Queen, and those Nars Velvet Matte Lipstick Pencils.    Kim’s watching Cheer, Fleabag, Killing Eve, The Crown, Victoria and reading Why We Can’t Sleep by Ada Calhoun, Ninety-Nine Glimpses of Princess Margaret, and (as always) Go Fug Yourself.   Produced by Dear Media

First Draft Episode #227: Courtenay Hameister Courtenay Hameister, debut author of memoir Okay Fine Whatever: The Year I Went From Being Afraid of Everything to Only Being Afraid of Most Things, and former host, co-producer and head writer of Live Wire Radio. Links and Topics Mentioned In This Episode Books by Beverly Cleary (author of Ramona Quimby, Age 8, Beezus and Ramona, and The Mouse and the Motorcycle) and and Judy Blume (author of Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret, Forever, and Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing) and The Crystal Cave series by Mary Stewart were some of Courtenay’s favorites growing up Create More, Fear Less is an organization in Portland Courtenay volunteers with that works with anxious kids While Courtenay went to New York University, she had the chance to work with legendary comedy group The State. The State — made up of Kevin Allison, Michael Ian Black, Robert Ben Garant, Todd Holoubek, Michael Patrick Jann, Kerri Kenney-Silver, Thomas Lennon, Joe Lo Truglio, Ken Marino, Michael Showalter, and David Wain — was formed in 1998 and had a self-titled comedy sketch show on MTV from 1992-1995. You can learn more about the history of the group in The Union of the State by Corey Stulce. Members of The State went on to create Reno 911, which is coming back! “The 7,000 Dollar Pyramid,” is one of The State’s sketches that Courtenay remembers Robert Ben Garant writing Writing Movies For Fun and Profit: How We Made a Billion Dollars at the Box Office, and You Can, Too! by former State members and co-writers Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant The Joan Didion quote Courtenay paraphrases is, “I don't know what I think until I write it down.” Some of Courtenay’s favorite guests from her many years of hosting Live Wire include: comedian, storyteller, director and actor Mike Birbiglia, who is best known for Sleepwalk With Me, which was also a comedy special and a New York Times bestselling book, Sleepwalk with Me and Other Painfully True Stories, and his new comedy special, The New One is also going to be a book, coming out in May 20202, The New One: Painfully True Stories from a Reluctant Dad; Carrie Brownstein, guitarist with Sleater-Kinney (who have a new CD in 2019, The Center Won’t Hold), co-creator and writer of TV show Portlandia, and author of memoir Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl; director Todd Haynes (who has directed Velvet Goldmine, Far From Heaven, and this year’s Dark Waters; Cheryl Strayed, author of Tiny Beautiful Things: Advice on Love and Life From Dear Sugar and memoir Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail; and David Rakoff, humorist and author of Fraud: Essays, Don't Get Too Comfortable: The Indignities of Coach Class, The Torments of Low Thread Count, The Never- Ending Quest for Artisanal Olive Oil, and Other First World Problems Courtenay’s friend Daniel H. Wilson wrote Robopocalypse: A Novel (which was optioned by Steven Spielberg, but after some delays has now been thrown over to Michael Bay) was the one who introduced Courtenay to his agent, Laurie Fox, who is an author in her own right, of The Lost Girls: A Novel and My Sister From the Black Lagoon: A Novel of My Life. Jean Garnett at Little, Brown was Courtenay’s editor Courtenay super recommends Sleepwalking with Einstein by Joshua Foer (and, oh my god, would you look at that, he also has a TED talk!) The Oprah and James Frey controversy which exploded over his memoir, A Million Little Pieces, is an inevitable reference point for a conversation about what “truth” means in the memoir category Courtenay’s recommendation for David Carr’s memoir, Night of the Gun: A Reporter Investigates the Darkest Story of His Life. His Own, was so persuasive that I bought the audiobook that night! I admit to being a complete comedy nerd, and having recently mightily enjoyed John Hodgman’s collection of personal essays, Medallion Status: True Stories From Secret Rooms. Jennifer Pastiloff (author of On Being Human: A Memoir of Waking Up, Living Real, and Listening Hard) and Lidia Yuknavitch (author of memoir The Chronology of Water and Verge: Stories, out Feb. 4, 2020!) teach a class called “Writing and the Body” that incorporates yoga and writing to enrich personal stories. Humor writer Steve Almond, author of Bad Stories: What Just Happened to Our Country? and William Stoner and the Battle For the Inner Life: Bookmarked. Writers Samantha Irby (author of We Are Never Meeting in Real Life: Essays, Meaty: Essays and omg she has a new one coming out this year, Wow, No Thank You!) and Jenny Lawson, aka The Blogess (author of Let’s Pretend This Never Happened: A Mostly True Memoir and Furiously Happy: A Funny Book About Horrible Things), were bloggers before they had books, and they indicate the kind of conversational writing style that Courtenay tends to naturally align with in her writing Elizabeth Gilbert’s 2009 TED Talk, “Your Elusive Creative Genius” Dan Harris, author of 10% Happier Revised Edition: How I Tamed the Voice in My Head, Reduced Stress Without Losing My Edge, and Found Self-Help That Actually Works--A True Story, and Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics: A 10% Happier How-to Book Susan Cain, author of Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking and her TED talk on the subject of introverts Courtenay admires Michael Ian Black’s evolution as a writer. Especially significant to her was his honesty in the memoir Navel Gazing: True Stories of Bodies, Mostly Mine (But Also My Mom’s, Which I Know Sounds Weird). His newest book, A Better Man, tackles toxic masculinity in the form of letters to his son as he goes off to college. I have always dreamt of being able to link to an article about Jeff Bezos’s dick pics (just kidding but here we go): this incident was wild - The National Enquirer allegedly tried to blackmail Jeff Bezos, threatening to release intimate pictures of him unless he paid up. Instead, Bezos released the pics himself and told them to screw off. It was wild. It was great. That incident calls to mind So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed by Jon Ronson “To Fall in Love With Anyone, Do This,” the Modern Love essay by Mandy Len Catron, references Dr. Arthur Aron’s study, which included 36 questions to generate intimacy. (And hey, look at that, Mandy has TED talks about love stories, too!) I want to hear from you! Have a question about writing or creativity for Sarah Enni or her guests to answer? Set in and around San Francisco this mystery weaves together two seemingly disparate stories into a terrific modern mystery with the classic elements of a traditional film noir thriller. Then I talk about one of the most famous fictional detectives of all time, Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot in the British television series, POIROT. Season 7-13 is now available on Netflix. I let you in on some of particular favorite episodes including; After the Funeral, Murder on the Orient Express, Death on the Nile, and Murder in Mesopotamia. You are in for the entertainment recommendation of your life when I talk about the NPR radio show/podcast: THIS AMERICAN LIFE. (ThisAmericanLife.Org) which has consistently given the world one of the most creative and informative shows since its advent in 1995. It has both real life and fictional stories by some of the best journalists and authors of today (David Sedaris, David Rakoff, Sarah Vowell, etc). One of my favorite episodes in the This American Life cannon is the mysterious and true story, THE GHOST OF BOBBY DUNBAR (Ep.#352). It is enthralling suspense story!!! This episode's mysterious Tasty-Treat-Sensation is Smucker's MAGIC SHELL! It's a liquid then it's a solid. I haven't had it since childhood but its chocolatey and mysterious so it's gotta be good! Tangents: Murder on the Orient Express. 2017 to be released in American theaters November 10, 2017. Staring Kenneth Branagh, Judi Dench, Michelle Pfeiffer, Penélope Cruz & Johnny Depp. P.S.I. Luv U. (CBS, 1991). Starring Connie Sellecca (Hotel) and Greg Evigan (My Two Dads). SADLY this is not available on any streaming platform but you can catch the super-fun intro and some scenes from the show on YouTube! Murder on the Orient Express.(1974) All Star Cast!: Starring Albert Finney, Ingrid Bergman, Lauren Bacall, Sean Connery, Vanessa Redgrave, Anthony Perkins. Unfortunately not on any streaming platform. Available on DVD Remington Steele: This 80s classic detective series starring Stephanie Zimbalist, Pierce Brosnan and the incredible Doris Roberts (Everybody Loves Raymond) is now on Hulu!!! Murder She Wrote: Starring Angela Lansbury is sadly not on any streaming service currently but can be purchased on DVD.

Join us as we celebrate the worldwide launch of our bookstore’s very own memoir, Shakespeare and Company, Paris: A History of the Rag & Bone Shop of The Heart. “I created this bookstore like a man would write a novel, building each room like a chapter, and I like people to open the door the way they open a book, a book that leads into a magic world in their imaginations.” —George Whitman, founder Drawing on a century’s worth of never-before-seen archives, this first history of the bookstore features more than 300 images and 70 editorial contributions from shop visitors such as Allen Ginsberg, Anaïs Nin, Kate Tempest, and Ethan Hawke. Edited by Krista Halverson, with a foreword by Jeanette Winterson and an epilogue by Sylvia Whitman, the 400-page book is fully illustrated with color throughout. Photographs and ephemera are woven together with personal essays, diary entries, and poems from writers including Allen Ginsberg, Anaïs Nin, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Sylvia Beach, Nathan Englander, Dervla Murphy, Jeet Thayil, David Rakoff, Ian Rankin, Kate Tempest, and Ethan Hawke. With hundreds of images, the book features Tumbleweed autobiographies, precious historical documents, and beautiful photographs, including ones of such renowned guests as William Burroughs, Henry Miller, Langston Hughes, Alberto Moravia, Zadie Smith, Jimmy Page, and Marilynne Robinson. For almost 70 years, Shakespeare and Company has been a home-away-from-home for celebrated writers—including James Baldwin, Jorge Luis Borges, A. M. Homes, and Dave Eggers—as well as for young, aspiring authors and poets. Visitors are invited to read in the library, share a pot of tea, and sometimes even live in the shop itself, sleeping in beds tucked among the towering shelves of books. Since 1951, more than 30,000 have slept at the “rag and bone shop of the heart.”

It’s a hot one out there today. Come, have a seat on the couch in Julie Klausner’s fancy Manhattan apartment, while we discuss podcasting and writing for television series — and I spend way too much time explaining how I’ve just never been into musical theater. Oh, don’t mind the cat hair. You took your Claritin today, right? I’d attempted to sit down with the comedian for some time — at least two podcasts ago. Not podcast episodes, mind you, entire podcast series. Every time I’d asked, she was either living on the opposite coast in a TV show writer’s room or otherwise knee-deep in some other project. On the upside, however, there’s plenty to talk about. When we sat down, Klausner had just finished filming a TV pilot with Billy Eichner, the Amy Poehler-produced Difficult People about two struggling New York comedians. It’s not autobiography, of course — Klausner seems to be doing just fine. And besides, when she’s searching for a more direct method of venting, she’s always got her weekly podcast How Was Your Week to turn to.  Other topics discussed herein include: David Rakoff, my unexpected turn as a Mike Love apologist, the downside of bearing your soul and whether or not Ben Folds is this generation’s Billy Joel.

And then a look back at the life of David Rakoff. His new novel was published posthumously this month. To reflect, hear a couple of David and Jesse's past conversations. Plus, the editors from the new film site The Dissolve recommend Blue Jasmine and The Act of Killing. Then Jesse talks about Elliott Gould's turn as a 50s noir hero adrift in 70s LA, in Robert Altman's The Long Goodbye.

Holy Crap! DAVID SEDARIS is on this episode!!!!!!! Oh, hello. Sorry. I just got right into it, didn't I. Anyway. This episode of How Was Your Week is so exciting, none of us can handle it. As mentioned, DAVID SEDARIS is on the show to discuss his new book LET'S EXPLORE DIABETES WITH OWLS, and to surprise Julie with the revelation that HE has questions for HER! That's right! David Sedaris is a fan of this very podcast! I know. I know. So, once that fact is dealt or not dealt with, David and Julie have lots to talk about. Eating steak during signings, renting cats with poopy butts, reading books about pederasty, writing about doing it, and having the good fortune to be friends with David Rakoff. Also: Julie counts down to the Liberace movie, contemplates the new crop of network shows, briefly mourns Dr. Joyce Brothers, explains the source of her recent panic attack, speculates about Al Pacino's headspace, and directs young men who wish to be sexy toward Don Draper's hotel room shenanigans. BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY! DAVID SEDARIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Enjoy this.

Here is a special minisode Spoony and I put together after hearing the news that David Rakoff died last night, far too young. David Rakoff, a contributor to our site, died Aug. 9, 2012, after a battle with cancer. He was 47. Some years ago, Rakoff wrote an essay on the life and work of Viennese writer Felix Salten. The creator of Bambi, Salten was a European Jew who wrote soft porn and a prominent critic in early 20th-century Austria. In concert with this essay, Rakoff joined Vox Tablet host Sara Ivry for a podcast conversation about the brutality in Bambi, about Salten’s place in literary society, and about the dark side of fairy tales—and life. We re-run this piece now to celebrate David Rakoff, whose wit, warmth, and grace come across in every utterance, and whose reading of a particularly wrenching scene from Bambi gives a sense both of the work’s violence and of Rakoff’s own captivating voice.... On this week's episode of How Was Your Week?, author, actor and proud Negateer DAVID RAKOFF talks to Julie about his book Half-Empty, as well as other important issues such as: which cake is the least Jewish kind of cake, what about the musical RENT made him angry, and how New York has changed in his almost thirty years of living here. Also, Julie ponders the lessons learned after picking a fight on Twitter about Mario Lopez and circumcision, thinks way too much about Nancy Grace's upper body, and describes the contents of a superb Snack Nest. Plus: Things people are still telling women that they need! Kelly Ripa's giant head! A celebration of defensive pessimism! And the obscurity of Chester A. Arthur. A pleasant, funny, and occasionally poignant show that happens to coincide around the 10th anniversary of 9/11. Which we didn't want to make a whole thing about, but is true.
