Richard Connell's 1924 short story, "The Most Dangerous Game," continues to haunt and inspire filmmakers nearly a century later. Its chilling premise of a wealthy sportsman hunting humans for sport has resonated through decades of cinema, influencing countless horror and thriller narratives. Join Kyle and his subjects, Pete, Kynan, and Tommy, as they embark on a thrilling exploration of this enduring tale and its impact on modern film. This episode of "Sitting in the Dark" focuses on three distinct cinematic interpretations of the "man hunting man" theme, each offering a unique perspective on the source material. The discussion begins with "The Hunt" (2020), a big-budget action thriller starring Betty Gilpin and Hilary Swank. The hosts dissect the film's controversial reception, its exploration (or lack thereof) of class warfare and political commentary, and the effectiveness of its fast-paced, often brutal action sequences. They debate whether the film's slick Hollywood production enhances or detracts from its core message.Next, the group turns to "Get Duked!", a British horror-comedy that subverts expectations with its unique rhythm and youthful energy. The hosts praise the film's performances, its exploration of class dynamics, and its ability to make the vast Scottish Highlands feel terrifying. They also highlight the surprising subplot involving a local DJ and his unexpected audience. Finally, the discussion shifts to "Run Sweetheart Run," a film that tackles the horrors of being a woman in a world of toxic masculinity. The hosts commend the movie's refusal to be voyeuristic in its depiction of violence against women, while debating the effectiveness of its supernatural elements. They also explore the film's themes of privilege, survival, and the societal constraints faced by women.Throughout the conversation, Kyle and his co-hosts offer insightful analysis and personal reflections on the enduring appeal of the "hunting humans" narrative. They examine how these films tackle issues of class, gender, and power dynamics while delivering thrills and scares. The episode serves as a thought-provoking exploration of how a nearly century-old story continues to shape and inspire modern horror cinema.Film SundriesRead The Most Dangerous Game by Richard ConnellWatch the movies discussed:The Hunt: Apple • Amazon • JustWatchGet Duked: Apple • Amazon • JustWatchRun Sweetheart Run: Apple • Amazon • JustWatch (00:00) - Welcome to Sitting in the Dark (03:46) - The Most Dangerous Game (08:21) - The Hunt (26:50) - Get Duked (41:39) - Run Sweetheart Run (01:11:17) - Coming Attractions Learn how to support our show and The Next Reel's family of film podcasts by becoming a member. Off to Scotland this week. Four secondary school students (two delinquents, one street-tough poseur rapper wanna-be, and a diligent hardworker) are set off in the wilderness on the Duke of Edinburgh Award program. One of them wants to do a good job to pad his CV, the other three want to screw around and get high. You may be familiar with the setup. The four soon find themselves in the crosshairs of an upper crust psycho whose annual sport is to kill the ne'er-do'wells who are sent out on this expedition. Hallucinogenic rabbit feces. Wackiness ensues. Social commentaries are made. The movie has a hard time mixing the "psychological thriller" genre with the "goofball comedy" genre and end up offering a fairly inoffensive product. It is entertaining, though. Get Duked Final Grades Steve: Another middle of the road movie. It's a reasonable movie to watch, so don't avoid it, but there's nothing particularly noteworthy about it. Relatively family friendly. Calling this a "horror" movie is a stretch. 3/5 Brandon One of a handful of movies that don't stir a strong reaction for or against. Production quality is good. If the sense of humor in this movie suits you, you'll enjoy it. 3/5 Cocktail of the Week: Rusty Nail 2 2/3 oz Scotch Whisky 1 1/3 oz Drambuie Cocktail Grade: Essentially a Scottish Old Fashioned. Whiskey base and the Drambuie serves as a sort of Old Fashioned Mix. There are different theories on how to proportion the cocktail, so do what you want. The Drambuie is pretty honey-heavy and very sweet, so perhaps go with a stronger whisky pour than we did. Still a 5/5. Easy to mix, easy to drink. ------------------ Contact us with feedback or cocktail/movie recommendations to: boozeandbmovies@gmail.com X: @boozeandbmovies Instagram: @boozeandbmovies Threads: @boozeandbmovies www.facebook.com/boozeandbmovies --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/boozeandbmovies/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/boozeandbmovies/support

This week- two trips into unfamiliar territory in vans that become crime scenes. When Dean, Duncan, DJ Beatroot, and Ian are dropped off along the road to hike through the highlands for a the Duke of Edinburgh Award, they never dreamed they would be hunted by an older couple wearing masks. Soon the boys are in a desperate fight for their lives with only their limited wits and local fauna excrement to save them. Meanwhile, Sargent Morag hunts a notorious thief. A darling of the 2019 South by Southwest Film Festival and debut feature of writer/director Ninian Doff- Get Duked! (aka Boyz in the Wood). It's 1974, for some reason, and a van full of kids are driving through remote and empty backroads they are totally unfamiliar with on their way to see Lynyrd Skynyrd, with front row seats. They decide to pick up a second female wondering the side of the road, probably hoping she will be as friendly as the first one was. Unfortunately, the new pick up is severely traumatized and our leads are too damn thick to not get themselves killed. The first film from Platinum Dunes, the feature debut of prolific music video director Marcus Nispel, and a remake of Craig's favorite horror movie- The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003). All that and Kevin shouts from the void, Dave eats pizza, Tyler builds a nu metal instrument, and Craig has a existential crisis. Join us, won't we? Episode 321- Beatroot, Texas

We're continuing the Most Dangerous Month with a British invasion and the film formerly known as Boyz in the Wood. The debut film from music video director Ninian Doff tells the tale of four boys from the mean streets of Glasgow on a Duke of Edinburgh Award wilderness trip to the highlands of Scotland. When they find themselves being hunted, possibly by the Duke himself, they'll have to work together to survive. The movie premiered at SXSW where it won the Midnighters Audience Award and was picked up by Amazon for release exclusively on the Prime Video streaming service in 2020. Now we're heading for the Highlands to Get Duked! For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. Please subscribe and give us a positive review. Is Get Duked! (2020) the best horror flick you’ve probably never heard of? When Monica suggested we add the Amazon original to the Spooky Tuesday schedule, we weren’t sure what to expect — but with all of the intensity and energy of a music video and all of the Britishisms and delinquent charm of Misfits or The Inbetweeners, this movie is a guaranteed good time.

Av and Sammy reveal their preference on that most cinematic of dilemmas: popcorn or the picture - but first they tackle the far more forbidding lineup of movies released this September, culminating in a featured review (37:00) of Charlie Kaufman's I'm Thinking of Ending Things -- spoiler free until the 40:30 mark. New movies discussed include recommendations: Boys State (8:00); The Devil All The Time (16:00); The Social Dilemma (24:45); Get Duked! (29:15); House of Hummingbird (32:10). And a few we urge you to avoid - Unpregnant, Mulan, I Used to Go Here, She Dies Tomorrow, Misbehaviour, Extra Ordinary (... yup, it was that kind of month). Plus, two genuine classics before the bow. Outré: Lonely Room, sung by Jesse Plemons, written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II for Oklahoma (1943)
