On today's episode, I talk to musician Tanya Donelly. Originally from Newport, Rhode Island, Tanya founded not just one, but three, incredible 20th century bands. As a teenager in the 1980s, she formed Throwing Muses with her step-sister Kristin Hersh and performed with them through 1991. During this same time, she founded The Breeders with Kim Deal and co-wrote the first album Pod. Tanya left both groups though to form Belly, where she was the principal songwriter and frontperson. Their first album Star was a huge hit, although the group then broke up after their second album, which started Tanya's solo career. Since then, she's released numerous albums and EPs on 4AD, performed again with Throwing Muses & Belly, and contributed to more albums than I can possibly list here in a short bio! Welcome back to the Rock 'n Roll Ghost Podcast. On this week's episode, our 100th (!!!) the Ghost speaks with musicians Brian Sullivan (Dylan in the Movies) and Tanya Donelly (Throwing Muses, The Breeders, Belly) about their new collaboration, The Loyal Seas. Out now via American Laundromat Records, The Loyal Seas' Strange Mornings in the Garden, is an absolutely beautiful set of songs that showcase both Sullivan and Donelly's talents. The pair discuss how they met and began to collaborate, how the album came together during the pandemic, their influences, tour plans and Donelly hints that her band Belly may be close to getting its catalog of music away from the record label and into their possession. Dr. Nathan Regier, your host, is joined today by Kristen Donnelly (MSW, M.Div, Ph.D.) who is an empathy educator, speaker, and researcher with two decades of experience in helping people understand the beauty in difference and the power in inclusivity. In today's episode, she shares her research on empathy and her dedication to helping people achieve a better understanding of themselves and others. Key Takeaways: [2:17] Kristen shares about her role at Abbey Research. [4:30] Kristen started a research company that has the mission of helping people to be human in a better way. [5:12] During the pandemic, Kristen realized that generally, people lack empathy. [6:30] Kristen decided to focus her work on helping people practice empathy; practice understanding with themselves and others. [9:35] Kristen defines empathy as the consistent mindset that allows you to choose understanding before assumptions about yourself and others. [11:01] How is empathy a mindset? [13:43] Mindset can be cultivated. [14:55] Kristen explains why people tend to assume instead of understand. [16:30] We dehumanize people accidentally all the time. [20:09] We are really bad at admitting we are wrong; we are going to make mistakes and that needs to be part of our mindset too. [21:34] Kristen talks about applying empathy to ourselves. [26:46] What are some things we can do to improve empathy with ourselves and others? [29:25] None of us can do everything by ourselves. [30:17] Kristen talks about the connection between empathy and compassion. [33:30] Kristen encourages everyone to be human and messy, we are capable of terrible and wonderful things, all at the same time. [35:52] Dr. Nate shares his three key takeaways from an amazing conversation with Kristen Donelly. "The Indie Rock Grand Slam" Alright, so Tanya Donelly is one of the few to have completed the indie rock grand slam. In tennis, it’s the Australian, the French, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open and in music terms, it’s being in three undeniably great bands and then having a successful, critically acclaimed slo carer. Think about it—how many people can you name who have done this? Donelly was in Throwing Muses, the Breeders and the Grammy nominated Belly and her critically acclaimed solo career, bolstered by albums like Love Songs For Underdogs is impossible to deny. The Rhode Island-born musician is not only a magnetic figure, with tons of onstage charisma, she’s a brilliant and evocative lyricist, whose work is a dreamy blend of Anne Sexton, Wallace Stevens and Leonard Cohen. Heavily imagistic and loaded with mysterious symbols that shimmer and fade and turn to gold then dissolve in the dark and rise again as stars with colors you’ve never seen before, Donelly's work really sticks with you. There are shipwrecks, and moonbeams and rain and weird lights and dogs with seek through skin—you know, the kind of skin you can see through. The fact is, Tanya Donnelly is a fascinating and brilliant writer as well as being a fascinating and brilliant singer. Her vocal gymnastics are subtle, powerful and deeply arresting. She’s a mysterious and captivating artist and on her new album along with the Tarkington Sisters, Donelly covers some of her favorite tracks by The Go-Go’s, Leonard Cohen, Kirsty MacColl, Split Enz, Linda Ronstadt, The Pretenders, Wings and Mary Margaret O’Hara. In this chat, Donelly talks to Alex about being an introvert, her love of Echo and the Bunnymen and how long it took her to feel comfortable onstage. She also talks about how a clean house is perfect for writing, being creative in the time of Covid and why Elvis Perkins knocks her out….
Tanya Donelly speaks with Kyle Meredith about her new covers collaboration with The Parkington Sisters. The collective gives a new spin to classics by Paul McCartney, The Go-Go’s, and Leonard Cohen. Donelly discusses the art of a cover song, her love of Split Enz and Echo & The Bunnymen, and why most of these picks are culled from the '70s and '80s. The Breeders and Throwing Muses co-founder also talks about raising money for COVID-19 relief and Black Lives Matter organizations, activism now versus the '90s, the chances of another Belly album, and a project she’s working on with Dylan In the Movies. Few can rival the indie rock pedigree of Tanya Donelly. At the age of 15, she cofounded 4AD stalwarts Throwing Muses with best-friend-turned-step-sister Kristin Hersh. Seven years later, she joined forces with Kim Deal on her then-side project, The Breeders. But it was the formation of Belly the following year that really allowed Donelly to shine as both a front woman and songwriter, scoring one of the era’s most memorable singles, “Feed the Tree” in 1993. After a less than amicable breakup in the mid-90s, the musician began a decades-spanning solo career, culminating in the five column “Swan Song Series” in 2013-2014. In recent years, Donelly has found a second career, working as a postpartum doula for new parents, even as the siren call of music has beckoned to her yet again through recent projects, including Belly’s 2016 reunion.
This is DAY 24 of the COVID-19 pandemic. An unvarnished view of what we should expect in the coming days and weeks in Ontario's fight against COVID-19. And Ontario’s fight is Canada’s fight > Here’s what you need to know on Friday, April 3, 2020 Some dire projections from Ontario this afternoon. As promised, Premier Doug Ford and provincial public health officials shared their COVID-19 modelling projections. Doctor Peter Donnelly is the CEO of Public Health Ontario. He told the Queen’s Park press gallery …and laid out the stark numbers the Premier’s referred to. You heard correctly. The best case scenario, if we all do everything we can to curb the spread of COVID-19, Dr. Donelly says there would be 3000-15000 COVID related deaths in the next 18-24 months. For some important perspective… The death rate for influenza in Canada is 500 to 1500 cases per year. 500-1500 for all of Canada. Based on the projections presented Friday afternoon, Ontario’s COVID death toll alone would 6 to 10 times greater than the national death toll from the flu. Dr. Donelly stresses in order to keep those numbers as low as possible, we must all take an aggressive stance…Flattening the curve won’t be good enough. We need to chop the top off the curve. Even at that, given this best-case scenario…the projections suggest 80 thousand Ontarians will be infected by COVID-19 by the end of April. And the Premier says that’s going to mean hundreds of fatalities in mere weeks. Again, for some perspective, the modelling suggests Ontario’s death toll would be more than 1600 by the end of the month. As of Friday afternoon on April the 3rd, Ontario is reporting 67 deaths It means the wave will continue to mount, it’s far from cresting and will crash into our already stressed healthcare services. The projections suggesting that Ontario’s Intensive Care Unit beds will be at capacity within weeks and will still be stressed if the province is able to add 900 more beds before the end of April. Much has been made of the shortage of medical supplies and that became more complicated when US President Donald Trump invoked the Defense Production Act requiring companies to prioritize the production of masks and ventilators to fight the spread of COVID-19. Sugical mask manufacturer 3M says the White House has requested it cease exports of U.S.-made N95 face masks to Canada. 3M is pushing back on the order and so is Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Trudeau wouldn’t comment on whether the federal government is considering imposing retaliatory measures. For all the attention on data and modelling and projecting what may be coming… But there was data hiding in plain view four months ago that predicted the novel corona virus that has resulted in the COVID-19 pandemic. Katherine Ellison is an author and Pulitzer Prize winning journalist based in San Fransisco who says researchers combed through social media data in December saw the rise of the new corona virus in China.

The shadow of Kim Deal and Tanya Donelly looms large over 1990s alternative and indie rock. They were both members of seminal 1980s bands, Deal in the Pixies, and Donelly in Throwing Muses, and had second acts in the 90s in their own bands, The Breeders and Belly. For one album, before Kim's sister Kelley joined the band, Donelly joined forces with Deal on the 1990 album Pod by The Breeders, then conceived as a side project for the two. The result is a subtle and restrained record that only hints at the pop prowess the two would unleash with future singles like "Last Splash" and "Feed The Tree." With engineer Steve Albini behind the board, the album pushes the artists to work with space, finding equal footing for all the instruments. For some, the deliberate nature may turn plodding, but the atmosphere created is one truly unique, and it's clear why musicians like Kurt Cobain would find the tension between hard hitting drums, melodic bass lines and stripped down guitar lines so appealing. Aldyen Donnelly is the Director of Carbon Economic at Nori, a startup company dedicated to creating trust and transparency while lowering transaction costs throughout the carbon trading industry. Her mission is to reward carbon sequestering farmers with blockchain-backed carbon credit certificates. Nori is a blockchain-enabled platform allowing users to trace where carbon dioxide is sequestered and is currently the world’s only carbon dioxide sequestration marketplace. Aldyen joins me to share the mission behind Nori and how it can help both the environment and farmers. She shares how she became inspired to help the world reduce its carbon emissions, where carbon emissions are primarily derived, and the company’s business strategy to help reverse this problem. She also explains the role of blockchain with regards to transparency in their platform and how farmers can benefit from regenerative and carbon sequestering practices. “When we create a market that is transparent, a whole bunch of ideas about how to do this will come up that have never entered our mind yet.” - Aldyen Donnelly This Week on The Future of Agriculture Podcast: Where greenhouse gases are primarily stored. How soon can we reduce the greenhouse gases to 350 ppm? The theory behind Cap and Trade and why it’s not an optimal strategy to address the greenhouse gas emission issues. The true value of one carbon certificate. Why California is a special case when it comes to emissions certificates. How Nori works and how it utilizes blockchain. Who are the buyers of the carbon certificates? How regenerative practices allows farmers to generate marketable carbon credits, even during natural disasters. Causes of the downward pressure on the price of carbon certificates. How funding U.S. farmers to sequester carbon can offset transport and gas plant emissions. Aldyen Donnelly’s Key Takeaways: When most people are buying a certificate in the state of California market for $15, they think it’s costing $15 to reduce one ton of CO2, but if a certificate is really only worth 25% of a ton, they’re actually paying $60 a ton. Every cap and trade pollution market has crashed and burned within seven years. If we fund U.S. farmers to sequester carbon at top price, they can offset all of the U.S. transportation emissions and all of the gas plant emissions. Way back in 2012 Ozone interviewed the marvellously talented and professional Barb Myers about her art and her fantastic comics. Well it's 2015 now and Barb has finally been able to put out the whole of her comic "Talisman: Return of the Exile" for sale on Amazon! So of course now was the perfect time to catch up for another chat. I first came across her lovely comic on Drunk Duck years and years ago when it was called "Return to Donelly", it was a beautiful looking piece of work and it rightly brought her to the attention of the pros. It was picked up for Keen spot and then a publisher wanted to sell it in bookshops everywhere. Well things went screwy after that and it never really reached its full potential unfortunately. It disappeared from radar totally. Well now it's BACK! You can buy this great 108 full colour fantasy comic book story for only $10 US dollars. Mine should get to me on about the 10th of February. ^_^ Topics and Show Notes: Featured comic:NOBODY CAN EAT FIFTY EGGS - http://www.theduckwebcomics.com/NOBODY_CAN_EAT_FIFTY_EGGS/Buy Barb's latest book:Talisman: Return of the Exile - http://www.amazon.com/Talismen-Return-Exile-Barb-Jacobs/dp/0996030611/Buy the prequel:The knightmare knife - http://www.amazon.com/Talismen-Knightmare-Steven-Philip-Jones/dp/1594264066MORE interesting Barb links:Xylia Tales - http://www.xyliatales.com/Her DD profile - http://www.drunkduck.com/user/iowabarbidoll/Her home page - http://barbjart.com/Kez - http://warofwinds.com/what-it-takes/Posemanicas (for drawing) - http://www.posemaniacs.com/ figure drawing.Hellforstout, Barb's Son's excellent band - http://www.helforstout.com/Original Quackcast with Barb - http://www.theduckwebcomics.com/quackcast/episode-84-barb-jacobs-and-her-beautiful-comics/Special thanks to:Gunwallace, band leader extrodinaire - http://www.virtuallycomics.comBanes, A LOOP OF BANES - http://www.theduckwebcomics.com/user/Banes/ The theme song by Gunwallace this week was for:Ginger and Shadow http://www.theduckwebcomics.com/Ginger_and_Shadow/ by Barry Corbett.
