Many Wisconsin farmers have had an unfortunate experience learning about tar spot in corn.  While there may be little known about the fungus in terms of prevention, DeKalb is conducting research now to try and find a combination of potential genetic answers.  Jim Donnelly is a DeKalb Technical Agronomist.  Pam Jahnke spoke with him from a farm field in northern Illinois where Donnelly says he's been dealing with tar spot for about 10 years. Donnelly says DeKalb is investing time and research dollars to investigate options that would at least provide some resistance in fields where tar spot was previous detected.  One of the research locations they're working with is in Janesville, WI. As Donnelly points out, they're only focusing research on tar spot where growers have already faced challenges.  He is hopeful that they might be able to bring some resistent products to the marketplace within the next 2-3 years.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

After decades of success in the fitness industry, George Jackson created TG-The Gym in 2018. It represents the next step in his career and a distillation of all he has learned. TG is an umbrella organization offering a license to independent gym owners with a tremendous number of benefits and proven business model that's readily deployable.  George is a well known, long-time industry veteran who started with Gold's Gym around 1983. He's gone through multiple iterations over the years, taking what is useful and constantly refining his model . . . and it's working! Peter San Nicolas is the The Gym's first licensee. He's another industry pro who decided to rebrand his facility to The Gym-Ramona and he joins us on the podcast as well.  George states, "Starting the brand in 2018, we just saw an opportunity, especially for people like Peter. You know . . . independent guys that would now have an opportunity to be supported with a bigger group. As Peter knows, I'm never gonna tell him what to do, but if he comes to me and asks, 'Hey, George, what do you think about this?' Or, 'Hey, George, you're doing it this way. Can you tell me more about that?' Obviously I can help. My goal is really to support each of these independent operators and Peter is a great one! I'm so fortunate to have him as our first, because I don't think I could have found a better first licensee in terms of somebody who has been doing it since 16 years and who also competes as a bodybuilder." TG-The Gym is open to licensing its name and is doing a discovery day during IHRSA 2023. If you're an independent operator with 10,000 square feet or more with a strong focus on results, bodybuilding, body transformations, and serious fitness, definitely contact George to discuss how a rebranding to The Gym, along with all ancillary revenue opportunities and cost savings could be a fit. (visionplanet@msn.com) In this episode, George and Pete discuss: 1. The unique licensing agreement that TG-The Gym has created to help independent operators rebrand and take their businesses to the next level.  2. The multiple, ancillary benefits that come with joining TG and the potential of a grand reopening into "The Gym." 3. The advantages of being part of a team and how it can reinvigorate members, employees, business partners, and communities. Before Restore, Jim co-founded the Webby Award-winning premiere online travel community, IgoUgo.com. Earlier in his career, Jim worked in the luxury retail market, where he developed luxury condos for high-profile homeowners such as Michael Jordan, Cam Newton, and Chris Daughtry, as well as salons, spas, and high-end health clubs, including the Charlotte Athletic Club.In this episode, Jim talks about revolutionizing the health and wellness category, leading from the heart, and maintaining a strong company culture as his organization grows.  Guest Bio:Making wellness affordable and accessible to everyone has become Jim's life mission and is the driving mindset behind everything his team does at Restore Hyper Wellness. In just five years, Restore has grown from one Austin location to over 100 locations spanning 28 states, and there are many more on the way. Before Restore, Jim co-founded IgoUgo.com, winner of a Webby Award as the top travel website in the U.S. In under five years, IgoUgo became the leader in user-generated content for travel websites and was sold to Sabre Holdings / Travelocity. With a focus on the luxury retail market, Jim has developed luxury condos (for homeowners including Michael Jordan, Cam Newton, and Chris Daughtry), as well as salons, spas, and high-end health clubs, including the Charlotte Athletic Club. The accumulation of these experiences informed the creation of Restore.—Guest Quote“We've gone through certain inflection points, and at each inflection point, you know, as we get bigger and bigger, we have to be very cognizant of how we are continuing to instill the culture, continuing to instill the deep mission and the important mission into people in a tangible way, where it used to be, I would tell them directly, they would see me get up in front of them. But as you get more and more dispersed, you have to rely on other folks to be the messenger. Jim Donnelly is the CEO and founder of Restore Hyper Wellness, a company focused on "making hyper wellness affordable and accessible for more people." He is a serial entrepreneur and a highly experienced leader with a passion for helping others. Six or seven years ago he found himself training for a triathlon and, after a friend suggested cryotherapy, he decided to try it out, but was unhappy with the experience-putting it mildly! He thought he could do it better, and he certainly has! They began adding other medical modalities (they offer 10 currently), have 165 locations open, a corporate office with 200 employees, 700 more stores on a development schedule, and a $140 million dollar investment by General Atlantic partners to top it off!  Part of their success stems from the fact that they've been very selective about their franchisees. They're continuing to aggressively expand with a new store opening every three to four days (as of this recording.) He states, "We've created a national infrastructure. We do it better than anybody else. We manufacture our own equipment. We're super excited about our place as the leader in this space. And our mission is to make hyper wellness affordable and accessible for more people so they can do what they love to do . . . I'm a much, much better entrepreneur today because of all of those things, including some of the failures. And I would say my superpower is that I'm self aware, I'm pretty egoless and I love bringing in people to help me." In this episode, Pete and Jim discuss:  1. What strategies they used from the beginning to ensure they had the right franchisees in place. 2. What procedures they've implemented to help them become the leader in the hyper wellness category. 3. How partnering with a private equity firm allowed Restore to make targeted, strategic investments and help them "control their own destiny." In this episode of The Irresistible Factor, Jim talks about how his first experience with cryotherapy inspired him to start a business around wellness that has grown to 135 locations and many services that go well beyond cryotherapy. He also talks about his plan to open 1,000 locations in the next four to five years. Jim had a plan, and he followed through. He attributes his success to his incredible team and their ability to attract (and keep) great talent through an impressive culture they have built within the brand. He also believes that being self-aware is their “superhero.” “We know where our weaknesses are, we know where our blind spots are, we make sure that we address those things. We do it in a relatively egoless, emotionally mature way.” Jim has a lot of experience in the health and wellness world. Both Jim and his wife were high-level athletes and have been consumers of wellness products for decades. Jim also owns high-end health clubs on the East Coast and learned many lessons along the way, which contributed to the success of Restore Hyper Wellness. In this interview, Jim shares his eye-opening experience starting this business. He originally thought that his primary target audience would be athletes, however, that wound up being only 15% of their clientele, leading to a much bigger opportunity for Jim and his team. Jim shares how his company has grown astronomically in a short time, and challenges he faced along the way.
