Donation by a man (known as a sperm donor) of his sperm
POPULARITY
Today we are re-releasing one of our most popular episodes back from 2020, so there's a chance you haven't heard it yet! In this episode I chat to Oceane, a midwife and mother of three who so generously shares the beautiful, intricate details of her two homebirths. She also tells the story of her wife’s birth and the journey they have taken to become parents with donor sperm and IVF, the logic involved in deciding who will be pregnant and the joy of breastfeeding at the same time. Oceane’s story is inspiring, informative and heartwarming and the video of baby Emmeline’s arrival captures the euphoria of supported and trusted family-centred birth. I'm talking all about the benefits of known sperm donation with Danielle Winston of The Seed Scout @theseedscout on today's brand new episode of The Egg Whisperer Show. When Danielle and her partner, practicing pediatrician Dr. Paige Kennedy-Winston, were looking to build their own family, they quickly realized the space of sperm banking was riddled with roadblocks for most families. The process was highly impersonal, the anonymity and lack of diversity adding to the problem, and options seemed extremely limited. That's when Danielle and Dr. Kennedy-Winston took matters into their own hands and found their own donor. They got the idea for their sperm donor matchmaking concierge service, The Seed Scout, from their own first-hand experience. With Danielle's business and law background and Dr. Kennedy-Winston's pediatric experience, they made The Seed Scout a reality by taking a human-centered, ethical approach to known sperm donation that's founded on the belief that it's a basic human right to know the identity of one's donor and genetic origins. In this conversation, Danielle and I talked all about:

In addition to this innovative approach, Cascade Cryobank is dedicated to ensuring the highest quality of donors. They conduct comprehensive mental health evaluations and offer the most expansive gene panel in the industry. All too often when talking about infertility, we only tell one side of the story. Traditionally in the public discourse, it has very much fallen into the category of a ‘women's issue'. However, as our guest this week Reece Conca can all too painfully attest, 40% of infertility issues are actually male factor related. Reece Conca is a former Australian Rules Footballer, who played over 150 games for Richmond and Freemantle. When Reece and his partner Bell were finding it difficult to conceive, it took them far too long to discover that Reece has a condition called Azoospermia, which effects 1% of men - a condition where in Reece had no sperm in his semen. In this Vulnerabiltea House, Reece speaks openly and honestly about the physical and emotional toll of a fertility journey he is very much still on, the hormone injections, the surgeries and much, much more. Ever wonder what it's like to walk into a sperm bank, answer some peculiar questions, donate, and then years later discover you have 97 biological children? That's exactly what happened to Donor Dylan, our guest in this riveting discussion. Dylan lets us into his journey of discovery, the shock of learning that he has a multitude of biological children, and the string of lies from the sperm bank that have shaped his life in unimaginable ways. We also tackle the controversial issue of donor anonymity and the weighty responsibilities Dylan grapples with as he navigates ties with numerous biological children. Equally important, Dylan shares his heartwarming experience of being discovered by a group of mothers he donated to, and the profound connections he's formed with his donor-conceived families. In this episode, I chat to Fiona about her experience with two boys under two. Together with her wife, Hayley, she embarked on IVF to conceive their first son with donor sperm. Fiona is honest about the challenges of social infertility, the long wait times and the importance of a positive mindset throughout the experience. Her pregnancy was challenging due to debilitating pubic symphysis but with support from her private obstetrician she had a really positive induced birth. Her breastfeeding journey was complicated by her baby's tongue tie and she admits that at four months - after weeks of feeding, pumping and top-up formula feeds - she felt it best to prioritise her mental health and wean him. Fiona also takes us through Hayley's pregnancy and birth and discusses what it was like to be the birth support parent. Not long now until my new book, The Complete Australian Guide to Pregnancy and Birth, is published. It covers everything you need as you journey through pregnancy and prepare for a positive birth experience. --> Pre-order it now.
Hayley and Katja Schoenberg bravely share their story of conceiving using donor sperm, going through a pregnancy during covid times, and having an unwanted induction of labour for a predicted big baby, which lead to a traumatic birth experience for them both. This isn't an easy story to hear, but it's essential for both you and your partner to understand so you can try to avoid going through many of the devastating procedures and interventions that caused this trauma. After a woman's at-home DNA test reveals multiple half-siblings, she discovers a shocking scheme involving donor sperm and a popular fertility doctorA total of 94 cline siblings were discovered or found during the production of this documentary which means the number could increase.44 other Fertility doctors have a similar situation or moral crime as Don cline.Director Lucie Jourdan's “Our Father,” a frustrating, tawdry documentary, rips a headline for trashy dramatic beats of an Indianapolis fertility doctor who inseminated an untold number of women with his sperm. The physician in question, Donald Cline, didn't ask the women for their permission. They continued with their lives believing their child's father was an unnamed medical student or their respective husband. Decades later, though, through the DNA test 23andMe, the now-grown children are not only discovering unknown half siblings, they're learning that Cline is their father. Much of the film is told through the eyes of Jacoba Ballard. Because of her blonde hair and blue eyes, in a family of brunettes, she always wondered about her origins. After using 23andMe, she found seven other half-siblings and began connecting the dots, ultimately spearheading the search for other siblings. Deeper, darker secrets are also revealed, like how the doctor would slip away to his office to masturbate while his female patient sat desperate and vulnerable—both emotionally and physically—in an adjoining room. The story carries an inherent grotesqueness, ready-made to churn the stomach. But Jourdan uses hackneyed techniques, often undermining, and worst yet, trivializing these crimes. Throughout the documentary, a rolling number keeps track of how many children are discovered by Ballard. It's a necessary breadcrumb for the viewer. The unnecessary part, however, springs from the sound of a man moaning whenever the number increases. In a film produced by Blumhouse, surely, the sound effect stems from a horror conceit. But in a documentary about a man masturbating, it's tasteless.Jourdan struggles to let the tragic stories shared by these men and women to breathe. A jagged and eerie score adds an unnecessary, overbearing mood and tone to their recounting. Staged scenes of Ballard dressed in a red hoodie, hunched over her computer as a web of papers and photos surround her, are closer to comical than serious. And the obvious reenactments of an actor playing Cline in scenes with the real-life Ballard are strained, at best; amateurish at worst. At every turn, Jourdan is determined to relegate this crime to a tacky TruTV documentary. For much of the film, the primary question eating at the victims is “why?”—what would drive Cline to inseminate these women? A conspiracy theory offered by one victim points toward cultish origins. While religion plays a large role with Cline, Jourdan isn't at all interested in parsing how Cline used his spirituality to absolve himself. Nor does she really delve into the inadequacy of rape laws. In fact, the best minute of the film arises when the state's prosecutor and a law scholar explain why charges couldn't be brought against the doctor. Partially because while a clause in Indiana law could result in charges, the inherent bias jurors have against women in cases not considered “clear” instances of rape would make the prospects of any prosecution untenable. Rather than dive through those nuances, Jourdan pushes quack theories that do the narrative little good. The whole picture slows to a crawl under the weight of these extraneous tangents, making one wish a clearer thesis dominated the proceedings. This movie is strongest when it focuses on the victims: the mothers like Liz White and Dianna Kiesler, and their children. In this plastic documentary, they're the only tangible link to reality. Each recollection from a mother—explaining their want for a baby, their joy of having one, and their heartbreak and disgust discovering how their desires were leveraged for this doctor's jollies—renders palpable empathy. Likewise for the now adults dealing with unmoored self-identities, health ailments, and despair. Angela Ganote of Fox59, the one person who believed these women, who went out of their way to investigate Cline, imbues this unyielding documentary with additional gravitas whenever she speaks about her research. None of those components, unfortunately, can overcome a movie too interested in manifesting trending topics over telling an alarming, gut-wrenching story with respect. While what Cline did and the fight his victims took to find justice is a truth worth knowing and learning, Jourdan's crass documentary isn't the best vehicle for such weighty material. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

In this episode Meegan and Harriet (yes I finally interview a couple!) share their journey to baby Jack. As a same sex couple, IVF is a given for them to conceive but they never envision that it will be so complicated. In their 6 years of trying both women fall pregnant and miscarry (3 miscarriages between them). They also both have a go with IVF, switch sperm donors to someone much closer to home, administer IUI in a car, egg share, develop a strong aversion to seeing other people's baby scan pictures and finally fall and stay pregnant with baby Jack. An incredibly interesting story with many twists, turns, laughs and utter heartbreak. Join Laksmi on Instagram: @wombroom.podcastIf you're enjoying the show please leave a review! In this Ask The Egg Whisperer episode, Penny sent in a question. Here's what she asked, “I'm 38 and a half. In the past six months, I've done three egg retrieval to preserve my fertility. In cycle one, I had 15 eggs frozen. Cycle two, four embryos with donors from one normal five AB one, lone mosaic, five DB. Cycle three, seven embryos. Five day five, one day six, one day seven waiting for PGT results. I'm hoping to start a family as a single mom by choice. I want to try to conceive as soon as next month after having an HSG. I ultimately want to have two kids, maybe both with the same donor or possibly with a partner with my frozen eggs, depending on life unfolds. And my fertility doctor recommended trying at least one IUI now that I've eggs and embryos banked, because I could possibly avoid the cost of a transfer and avoid shots. This sounds appealing, but shots sound terrifying. Would you recommend trying IUI with donor sperm first? What are the pros and cons? If yes. How many IUIs would you recommend before moving to a transfer?" Tune in to hear my answer to Penny's question, and to other listener questions. Do you want to learn more about Egg Freezing? In this episode, we're talking about donor sperm and treatment abroad. We have discussed donor conception on the podcast before and refer throughout the episode to previous chats we're had as we've spoken to egg donors, as well as organizations that help match you with donors both in the UK and abroad and we've heard your stories about having treatment abroad with a donor egg or sperm, for a multitude of reasons. The idea of using a donor to make your baby can take a lot of time to get your head around and it's so important to get support and there are brilliant organizations to guide you. We've chatted with the Donor Conception Network who have been around for a long time, working on the narrative about how we talk about this with our loved ones. More recently, the brilliant Becky Kearns who is @defiingmum on Instagram has launched her Paths to https://members.definingmum.com/ (Parents hub) which is to support people looking at donor conception and Becky is working tirelessly to provide webinars and an amazing support network to help answer the many questions that come with donor conception. Our first guest is JR Silver who has created a wonderful children's book called https://www.sharingseeds.co.uk/ (Sharing Seeds). JR was diagnosed with the BRCA1 and sadly lost his sister to breast cancer 9 months later. The family had realized there was a line of females that had passed away young Sister died 9 months later. It was when he went to find out about PGD testing to see whether they could take sperm and have it analyzed to see if they would only put forward healthy sperm What is Non‐obstructive azoospermia (NOA) Ended up having fertility tests - he found out that he had zero sperm which is defined as Non‐obstructive azoospermia (NOA) Definition - no sperm in the ejaculate due to failure of spermatogenesis and is the most severe form of male infertility. The etiology of NOA is either intrinsic testicular impairment or inadequate gonadotropin production. JR went on to have more tests to confirm the condition and then went on to see a Urologist and had two operations to try and retrieve sperm over the coming year. He and his wife had a strong support network and also gained more support and also funding from the Jewish infertility charity https://www.chana.org.uk/ (Chana ) Chana is close to my heart as they also supported me in the early stages of our decision to donate our frozen embryo You can learn more about them What's it like choosing a sperm donor for a guy and what advice do you have for other men? JR explained how he was on a light dose of anti-depressants felt that might have taken the edge off the choosing a sperm donor. Once the pair had got their head around it, they found it quite good fun. JR talked about how his wife didn't want to see pictures, but it was one of his requirements. The pair are fair in the background and they wanted someone close to his aesthetic and he said that enabled them to pick the donors based on the pictures available. The donor was from Canada and the US from https://www.xytex.com/ (Xytex) JR says to be wary of all the advice offered and encourages Men to work with their partner and look at if they can deal with the setbacks of how it feels, see it as a joint project. How do you talk about using a sperm donor - with your friends and family? This is such an important conversation and once we've also discussed on the podcast with Jana Rupnow... Sisters in Loss Podcast: Miscarriage, Pregnancy Loss, & Infertility Stories
Fertility is not just a birthing factor, sometimes it is male factor. Male infertility can be caused by low sperm production, abnormal sperm function or blockages that prevent the delivery of sperm. Illnesses, injuries, chronic health problems, lifestyle choices and other factors may contribute to male infertility. Today's guest shares her story with male factor infertility, going through IUI which resulted in a miscarriage, and having her rainbow baby. She knew her partner had a high probability of infertility due to his medical history. They started trying naturally and were unsuccessful so they went to a fertility specialist. Then they were formally diagnosed with male factor infertility azoospermia with less than 5% chance of having natural children. They then moved to third party reproduction and decided on using donor sperm. They were successful with their medicated IUI that resulted in their first child. When they tried for their second child the medicated IUI was successful but it resulted in miscarriage at 11 weeks gestation. In this episode, we discuss male factor infertility, how to find donor sperm for black and brown people, and recovery and healing from miscarriage. This episode is for you to listen to if you and your partner have been diagnosed with male factor infertility or are considering searching for donor sperm for people of color. This week my guest is an author and writer who goes by the name of JR Silver. JR is operating under a pseudonym, the one under which he has published a book called "Sharing Seeds: A Donor Sperm Story for Mummy, Daddy & Children" which is designed to open the conversation about conceiving via sperm donation. After finding out he carried not only the breast-cancer gene, he discovered that he also suffers from a condition making him unable to have children. JR and his wife then went on to have two children, via sperm donation, which although is something they're proud of and are advocates for, is something they've not yet told many people about openly. This first book was released in November 2020, and is the first in a planned series of Sharing Seeds books which aim to address a number of different fertility issues, breaking taboos and progressing the conversations with children about how they came into the world. JR is also an ambassador and contributing writer for the online fertility magazine IVF Babble. sharingseeds.co.uk IG: @sharingseedsbooks ivfbabble.com -- This episode is sponsored by Northern Powerhouse Media. In this episode, I talk to Annemette Arndal-Lauritzen, the CEO of the European Sperm Bank. Annemette has been in the company since 2013. She has a background in the healthcare sector and her main interests revolve around how women and sperm donors experience their contact with the sperm bank, and how to continuously improve this relationship. We had a really interesting discussion about the process for both the donor and the recipient, as well as the values of the Sperm Bank and their ideas about how they see their responsibility in this process, which was really reassuring to hear. In this episode we cover: - The recruitment of donors - The process the donors go through - The selection and profile of donors - The process of ordering sperm - Advice on how to choose a donor - Insights into finding donor siblings - Discussion around finding the balance between the rights and needs of the donor, the recipient and the donor conceived child - The values of the European Sperm Bank For more information on the European Sperm bank you can follow them on Instagram/Facebook or see their website.
