After personally experiencing the pain and loneliness of infertility, yet noticing how lucky she was to have had her journey begin in Israel, where it's free, Elana was inspired to help others. Cost, education, and access were tremendous obstacles for this “unspoken” issue in the Jewish community, so she rallied countless like-minded people and created the Jewish Fertility Foundation. Carey Cook, a Fertility Coach and Self-Care Strategist is dedicated to supporting the LGBTQ+ community as they navigate the intricacies of building a family. Carey shares her journey with IUI, Reciprocal IVF and ultimately embryo donation.  She shares how she and her wife found their embryo donor, how they each experienced emotional reactions to the experience of sharing or not sharing a genetic relationship with your child, and how the embryo donation experience has shaped their child's half sibling group.     In this episode, Carey shares how to pivot your expectations as your fertility path changes, and how to use your own body and intuition to make decisions that are right for you.  This episode of Stork'd is more than just a conversation—it's a valuable opportunity for a free therapeutic experience. You don't want to miss out.   IN THIS EPISODE: [3:00] Carey shares her family planning journey [6:45] Carey talks what the genetic composition of their child would look like based on the provided options  [10:12] Carey talks about the feelings surrounding being genetically connected.  [12:08] Carey walks through the decision to do a private embryo donation and the multiple ways of finding a donor [21:22] Carey discusses the type of therapy she practices, how your body gives you clues to support your decisions and how she teaches her clients to know the difference between what a yes or a no feels like [25:00] The process after the embryo donor decision is made and deciding  how much communication you want [31:37] Carey discusses the information she can share with her child when the time comes, and she talks about the differences between the  LGBTQ+ and straight communities going through this journey [34:21] Discussion surrounding society's opinions of what is right and wrong for gays and solo parents and the questions that Carey's clients have for her [39:00] Carey talks about her soul family; she defines what family means to her and reminds the listener there are many free sources on the internet and social media   KEY TAKEAWAYS: When a couple cannot have a child, they sometimes say, “If we don't, it's okay.” That statement is more than likely said to protect their emotions.” There is a lot of grief associated with failed treatments for having children. Being genetically connected to your child is an emotion that some people need to have. It troubles them when they think about it. Other people are happy to have a child and don't emotionally deal with genetics. There are multiple ways of finding donated embryos. Each has different caveats that the recipient needs to research before deciding.   RESOURCE LINKS: Stork'd - Facebook Stork'd - Instagram Stork'd - YouTube  Embodied Pride - Website Embodied Pride - Instagram   BIOGRAPHY:  Carey Cook, Fertility Coach and Self-Care Strategist, is passionate about helping people who are spiraling into the anxious abyss of expanding their families. During my own fertility process, I witnessed how wildly hetero the whole process is. That's why I started Embodied Pride. This is a dedicated space for LGBTQ+ to explore our unique needs around growing their families.  I believe that the entire fertility journey goes beyond the person who wants to grow a baby in their uterus. The fertility journey is happening for all persons who are creating and welcoming a new baby. You are on a whole fertility journey if you are a partner or using a surrogate. The Ethics Committee of the American Society of Reproductive Medicine has stated that the correct term for donating unused embryos to another couple for family building is embryo donation rather than embryo adoption. But since many people looking for information on this option continue to call it embryo adoption, we sometimes use both terms to aid in finding our materials. Further, there are a few adoption agencies that have an embryo donation program; they follow an adoption model, and they call it embryo adoption.Resources:Embryo DonationDisclosing Donor Conception to Our KidsSuggested Books for Kids Conceived Through Donor This podcast is produced by www.CreatingaFamily.org. Jen Vesbit was a guest on the show previously to discuss Empower with Moxi.  Empower is comprised of a group of three women who have all been embryo donors or have donated embryos themselves. They decided years ago that in addition to their families and current jobs, they wanted to help others build their families with the assistance of embryo donation.    From the time I met them years ago at the annual conference for the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, I knew they were going to do great things, and they have.  In addition to their support programs, they have just launched a matching program called, Moxie Matching.  You can find them at https://www.empowerwithmoxi.com/moxi-matching.  These three lovely ladies bring their intellect, passion and value system to this one-of-a-kind program.   So, what is embryo donation?  How do people find each other? What does it feel like to watch a child grow in another family who is a full genetic sibling to your child? How do you maintain a good relationship with the person you donate to, or who donates to you?   And what about the kids?  There is so much to consider.    In this episode we dive into some of these questions and more. I'm confident that you'll be amazed by the answers.  Jen shares her story of donating an embryo to a single woman. She tells us why she chose this person, how they created plans for their relationship, and so much more.   If you are considering embryo donation, you will want to listen to this episode. It's full of life lessons and new ways to think about donor conception.    Enjoy.     If you are interested in any of the topics discussed in this episode... Stephanie also had to adopt her twins because the state where they were born did not recognise surrogacy. Whether you're an egg donor now, if you're considering it, or you know someone that is — I'm glad you're here. Young women are donating eggs at the time they are most fertile, often times not realizing the implications of what that means. I've had patients come to me in their 40s without enough healthy eggs of their own to conceive. When they share with me that they themselves donated their young and healthy eggs in their 20s or 30s, but that none are available for them, I feel frustrated and sad for them. Frustrated enough that I'm doing something about it. Freeze & Share is a program that helps young egg donors save some eggs for themselves should they need them, while helping another family conceive when they can't on their own. Suffice to say, I don't want anyone to look back at their egg donation and wish they'd known more. Here is your chance — I want to give you all the information I have so that you're equipped with the knowledge to make the best decision for your personal situation. In this short snack, Ruby and Anne are talking with counselor Melanie Mikkelsen about building or extending a family with donated embryos. It's a great solution for families that are unable or prefer not to use their own genetic material. However, there are things to keep in mind when considering donating or using donated embryos: It's more complicated than you probably think. It likely takes more time than you think. It's probably more expensive than you imagine.  In this short snack, Melanie, Anne, and Ruby are talking about things donors and recipients should be aware of when deciding to participate in third-party reproduction, whether you know your donors/recipients personally or not. Often, embryo donation is a path people take when they've exhausted their options for having a child with their own genetic material. And that can mean hopeful parents are coming to the process with some pre-existing grief or frustration, and that can make working with a counselor like Melanie invaluable. If you're considering donating or accepting an embryo, or if you know someone who might be in this position, we hope you'll listen and share. EM•POWER with Moxi is an organization dedicated to empowering choice and fostering understanding for all stakeholders involved in embryo donation. Maya is a California Licensed Clinical Social Worker and psychotherapist who specializes in supporting individuals and couples struggling to conceive or building their family in alternative ways. Additionally, her background in child welfare allows her to have a keen understanding of not only the needs of patients/parents but also the needs of children born through third party reproduction. Maya is also a documentary filmmaker and co-producer of One More Shot, a feature length film she produced with her husband documenting their tumultuous journey to parenthood. Gina has been a genetic counselor in the field of reproductive medicine for over 17 years. Her company, Advocate Genetics, provides genetic counseling for fertility patients and those connected to third-party reproduction. She had been working in the field of infertility for 6 years before her own 3-1/2 year fertility journey began. Her story involved multiple surgeries and a heartbreaking miscarriage, but also resulted in the birth of her two amazing children via IVF. After she felt her family was complete, she also had 16 remaining embryos and some big decisions to make. Years later, she has donated her remaining embryos to two families, one of whom now has a beautiful and spunky daughter. Jennifer is a Nationally Certified Counselor who founded Embryo Donation Support, a web-based community for embryo donors. Through facilitation of pre- and post-donation online support groups to women with frozen embryos, Jennifer has built a solid understanding of the questions, needs, fears, and challenges that patients face when considering embryo donation. Jennifer also advocates for embryo donation and donor support through podcasts, live events, social media outlets, and blog contributions. Jennifer is a proud mother of twins conceived through IVF, and proud donor of one embryo who is now a healthy boy. These three women created EM•POWER to support the various complex elements of embryo donation and simplify the process for both patients and clinics. They created an education platform and a community platform that includes Moxi Matching, a private space where embryo donors can connect and match. Listen to Maya, Gina, and Jen as they discuss with Ellen and Jenn: • Maya's film “One More Shot” documenting her up close and personal road to parenthood. • Jen's fertility journey and experience becoming a donor with only one embryo and strong feelings on what that arrangement should look like. • Gina's professional path leading her to the fertility world before experiencing her own difficult path to parenthood. • Considering the options and challenges involved in embryo disposition. • “Adoption” vs “donation” terminology for embryos. • How people choose a donor or recipient for embryos • Empower with Moxi, a hub for education and support for the embryo donation community. What do you do when the two things that you want most in life are in conflict with one another? When Tammy had to decide between staying married or not having a family, she chose divorce and received an embryo donation from her friend, Michael. Although her heart-wrenching situation was unique to her, it's something we can universally relate to. It's the harsh reality that we rarely get everything we want. Tammy's story highlights the difficult trade-offs we often make but also reveals the beautiful experience of becoming a mom – something she had dreamed of for decades. This is the second part of our two-part episode where we look at the complicated, interwoven and beautifully connected nature of family through Michael and Tammy's stories. If you haven't listened to Michael's story, go check it out in Episode 8.    In This Episode:    [ 1:50 ] Tammy's introduction [ 3:03 ] Roadblocks of being gay in the 70s - 80s [ 5:05] What is it like to have a deep desire to have a child without any way to achieve it  [ 7:50 ] Tammy's overwhelming joy when she learned that gay marriage was legalized in Massachusetts [ 13:46 ] Choosing between her marriage and her desire for children [ 19:11] Tammy's path to surrogacy  [ 24:14 ] The legal and emotional process of surrogacy  [ 29:52 ] Pre-birth orders and the risk of surrogacy  [ 31:35 ] Becoming a parent at 53 [ 34:32 ] The complicated connection between her daughter's biological siblings [ 38:34 ] Tammy's definition of family   Takeaways:    Tammy faced an unbelievable ethical conundrum when having to choose between becoming a mom, which she had dreamed of for years and staying married to her partner whom she deeply loved and cared for. When gay marriage was legalized in Massachusetts in 2004 where Tammy lived, it was a momentous day for her. In one day, the possibility of marriage and children went from a far-off dream to reality!  Tammy's motto, “Live your life and don't stop for anyone;” means that although life will rarely turn out like we pictured, when you are true to yourself it will turn out exactly how it should be.  The science and options in which we are able to build families is changing more rapidly than our language can keep up with. Even our ability to articulate and imagine the possibilities for ourselves is oftentimes held back by how we were raised. Tammy's story inspires us to refrain from letting original constructs determine what we could be doing or what we should be doing.    Disclaimer:   The podcasts available on this website have been produced for informational, educational and entertainment purposes only. Two and a half years after getting married Anna's husband Kyle was diagnosed with Sperm Maturation Arrest, which is irreversible and is considered to be absolute infertility.Their only option to become pregnant was sperm donation.  They were both on different pages about this and it caused too much tension so they decided not to do sperm donation and not to have children.Anna made the decision to leave the job she loved working with children because it was too painful.  She did a facebook post to explain to everyone at once and from that post a family contacted them about donating embryosThe process of embryo donation started from there.  They met with the couple and then went through the process of ethics committee, lawyers, counselling and psychiatrist. They were given full public funding due to being fully infertile as a couple. The first embryo implanted worked and Anna became pregnant.  She had a difficult pregnancy with pelvic separation and round ligament pain, to the point of blacking out.Anna had a traumatic birth including a week long induction process and manual dilation to 5cm, and ending in c-section.  She experienced borderline post partum psychosis and complex PTSD.They tried for 2nd baby with embryo #2 which was also successful.Anna had a big bleed at 10 weeks (hematoma) and from 10-20 weeks she didn't stop bleeding.  She experienced a beautiful healing birth with the birth of her second child. However her daughter had severe jaundice and then seizure like behaviours, health issues,  and developmental delays Anna and Kyle are so grateful to have their two daughters and are planning on trying their third embryo in the near future.Connect with AnnaInstagram  https://www.instagram.com/annajkeogh/Connect with JaninePodcast instagram https://www.instagram.com/waitingforyou.podcast/Photography instagram  https://www.instagram.com/janinefoxphotography/Share your story  https://www.janinefoxphotography.co.nz/podcast

Today we are delving into a complex and sensitive topic – infertility and IVF. The statistics suggest about one in seven couples will be unable to conceive without some kind of medical intervention, and the most popular form of reproductive treatment is in vitro fertilisation – IVF. Partly because infertility is such a painful time for many of those experiencing it, we don't talk about it much. The same is also true of IVF, even though today in some places the procedure now accounts for as many as five per cent of all births. In this episode we wanted to consider how infertility interacts with both church culture and broader society, for good or ill, and then examine the complicated ethical questions raised by IVF treatment. Embryo donation, when done right, is a beautiful exchange. A donating family can send off embryos into the world with hopes of them becoming children. A receiving family gets the opportunity to give the embryo a chance at life while building a family.

In this informative podcast I speak with international Surrogacy Lawyer Stephanie Caballero (The Surrogacy Law Center - California), who dispels the myths and gives us the facts about surrogacy. What it is, what's involved, how it works as well as the legalities you need to know. Stephanie and her firm specialise exclusively in Family Formation and Reproductive Law and have represented over 3,500 clients, including Intended Parents, Surrogates and Donors from all over the world through Surrogacy, Egg, Sperm, and Embryo Donation. Stephanie has appeared on various programs and print media including the Today Show, HuffPost Live, ABC News, BBC Mundo, The Daily Beast, In Touch Magazine, The Bakersfield Californian, The Examiner, Creating a Family radio program, NPR, The Los Angeles Times, The Union Tribune, the L.A. Daily Journal and now Conceive Baby. Stephanie had her own journey through infertility, after eight years of treatments including having endured more than 10 artificial insemination procedures, three surgeries, three miscarriages, and 13 IVF procedures she finally realised her dream of having children when a surrogate carried her twins. Stephanie also had to adopt her twins because the state where they were born did not recognise surrogacy. Stephanie now helps other couples realise their family dreams through surrogacy as a member of the American Bar Association, San Diego Bar Association, and American Society of Reproductive Medicine, serving on the board of its Legal Professional Group. Stephanie also serves on the boards of Parents Via Egg Donation (PVED) and Fertile Action. If you've ever wondered about the option of surrogacy, you must listen to this.

Embryo Donation and Adoption and Snowflake babies. This is a podcast about options. Having more options for yourself and/or gifting more options to others. Kimberly Tyson is from Snowflakes, the first embryo donation and adoption company in the world. Nightlight® Christian Adoptions had already been finding forever families for children since 1959 through domestic, international and foster adoption services.  In 1997 they took this to another level for so many to make their dreams come true. Nightlight established the world’s first human embryo adoption program, the Snowflakes® Embryo Adoption Program. By applying the best practices of adoption to embryo adoption, families with remaining frozen embryos are able to select a family who will adopt their embryos and then hopefully give birth to their adopted child.  In 2017 Snowflakes celebrates its 20th anniversary and the births of over 500 Snowflake babies. If this show might help you or those you love, share it and pass it forward. Fascinating and pragmatic to the max, this show may change the lives of many. www.Snowflakes.org  www.EmbryoAdoption.org Kimberly Tyson, Marketing and Program Director 970-663-6799  info@snowflakes.org
