Josh Eilert has finally been able to take a deep breath. Finally, there's a sense of calm after the most tumultous season in West Virginia Universtiy basketball history. The departure of Bob Huggins and unexpected loss of several players made WVU basketball a national story of dysfunction this summer. The new man in charge, at least for this season, is the only staff member that lasted throughout Huggins' 16 seasons at West Virginia. Amidst the chaos, Eilert has successfully replenished the Mountaineer roster and worked tirelessly to build fractured player relationships. In this episode, Eilert explains his plan for the upcoming season, and how his retooled coaching staff and players are preparing for the challenges that lie ahead.

Josh Eilert, interim head coach at West Virginia, joins us to discuss his whirlwind summer, the way his life has changed, and the work that needs to be done to complete the West Virginia Men's basketball roster.
Josh Eilert grew up in Osborne, Kansas, and then played basketball at Cloud County Community College and Kansas State. When Bob Huggins came to K-State in 2006, Eilert was ready to head into his second year as a graduate assistant coach for the program. Huggins kept Eilert on, and when he left K-State after one season to head home to West Virginia, his alma mater, Eilert went him. After 16 seasons at Huggins' side. Serving under numerous titles, when Huggs retired suddenly this summer after a DUI arrest in Pittsburgh, Eilert was tasked with keeping the roster together. And on June 24, 2023, Eilert was named the interim head men's basketball coach at West Virginia University by Vice President and Director of Athletics Wren Baker. During his time at WVU, Eilert has handled a wide variety of duties, including directing WVU's wing and post players, on- and off-campus recruiting, on-court scouting, opponent scouting, film preparation, scheduling, coordinating the day-to-day internal operations of the basketball program, travel arrangements, camps, film exchange, fundraising, and other special projects. This past season, Eilert moved into a coaching role as an assistant coach and served as an interim assistant coach during the 2016-17 season. Eilert and his wife, Brandi, have two sons, Brendan and Tristan, and a daughter, Emri. All of his children were born in West Virginia. *** Tim Fitzgerald is a sports journalist who writes, does TV, radio, daily YouTube videos, and is a long-time podcaster. With adversity comes opportunity and West Virginia's Josh Eilert has been on a roller coaster of emotions over the past few weeks. Being named interim head coach of the Mountaineers basketball program is an extremely exciting opportunity, but also bittersweet because of the Coach Bob Huggins situation. How was he able to navigate bumpy waters and keep key players in the program? Discussing how he compartmentalizes doing the best job he can this season and becoming the permanent head coach. Why he wants to keep defensive principles in place but open up offensive play. Thoughts on the current roster. Not shying away from the Big 12 competition. And what are realistic expectations for the upcoming season? Plus, Kentucky re-loads.

On Sunday evening Alabama guard Jahvon Quinerly unexpectedly announced intent to enter the transfer portal as a grad transfer. Quinerly will have the ability to go anywhere and play immediately as a grad transfer. There will be no shortage of suitors for his services, particularly those programs searching for a high level point guard. West Virginia announced the decision to hire assistant Josh Eilert on an interim basis for the 2023-24 season. Doing so will likely help the Moutaineers maintain more of their scholarship players than they otherwise would have. Kerr Kriisa has already announced he's staying. We now just wait for the decisions of others who have entered the transfer portal and are taking other visits. Down in Memphis, Penny Hardaway has been levied a three-game suspension to start the season.

Dort will sie ihren Traum vom Selbstversorger-Dasein leben.
